Canon Cuts Profit Forecast as Post-Brexit Yen Strength Bites

HTML:
Canon Inc (<span id="symbol_7751.T_0"><a href="http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=7751.T">7751.T</a></span>) cut its full-year profit forecast on Tuesday, becoming Japan’s first major technology company to report a weaker outlook on the yen’s surge following Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.</p>
<p>The world’s biggest maker of cameras and printers forecast group operating profit of 265 billion yen ($2.54 billion) for the year through December, from 300 billion yen estimated three months prior.</p>
<p>The new forecast, Canon’s second downward outlook revision this year, is below market expectations of 297 billion yen, based on estimates of 17 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters.</p>

Fake LP-E6 Batteries

Well first time for this but I have been caught out in the fake battery saga , bought 3 genuine canon lp-e6 batteries from ebay and paid a little less than shop price but seller seemed good and when they came all in packaging with holograms etc, no problem.

After a month of use i have noticed they are not lasting as long as i would have expected so got in touch with canon and they are fakes. Now i have the issue of chasing for a refund and repurchasing as well as knowing some idea sold me dangerous batteries which could even cause a fire. Not a happy bunny ( excuse the duracell pun )

Heres the pics , on comparison the only thing now obvious is the glossier finish to the casing. Everything else looks very well copied.

Warranty Repair - Out of Warranty?

I sent in my BG-E11 to Canon Canada for repairs for a couple of things. First (and the major problem), the joystick button randomly popped off and was lost. Secondly, I had overtightened a plate and it cracked the base plate of the BG-E11. Small crack, nothing major. I'm being told that because of this crack, the warranty is void and they want $112. I said to forget about the small crack and please just fix the joystick. Yet they still want $112. Do I have any grounds to stand on? The warranty states:

"This limited warranty covers all defects encountered in normal use of the Canon Product, and does not apply in the following cases:

(a) Loss of or damage to the PowerShot Digital Camera or EOS Digital Camera due to abuse, mishandling, improper packaging by you, alteration, accident, electrical current fluctuations, failure to follow operating, maintenance or environmental instructions prescribed in Canon U.S.A.'s or Canon Canada's user's manual or services performed by someone other than Canon U.S.A. or Canon Canada, or an authorized PowerShot Digital Camera or EOS Digital Camera service center. Without limiting the foregoing, water damage, sand/corrosion damage, battery leakage, dropping the camera, scratches, abrasions or damage to the body, lenses or LCD display or damage to the connectors or cables, AC adapter or CompactFlash memory card, will be presumed to have resulted from misuse, abuse or failure to operate the PowerShot Digital Camera as set forth in the operating instructions."

It sounds to me that the joystick should still be covered and that my entire warranty should not be considered void.

1DX MKII has less wireless features then MKI?

Is there anyone with both a MKI and MKII, including their wireless adapters, and can comment on the wireless capabilities of each?

My buddy has a MKI and WFT-E6A and he tells me that he can configure the wireless to be an independent destination from his CF cards, so basically it acts as a 3rd media card. For example he has his CF cards configured for mirrored writing of raw files, and he sends small jpg's over the wireless to Shuttersnitch on his iPad.

I'm trying to replicate exactly that on my MKII and WFT-E8A: I want to mirror the raws on my CF/CFast cards, and send jpg's over wireless. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. It seems that instead of treating the wireless as a 3rd card, like my buddy's MKI, the MKII instead just takes a copy of what you're writing to one of the media cards and sends it over wireless. If this is in fact the case, it seems that the MKII's wireless is crippled compared to the MKI.

Any thoughts on this? My buddy and I haven't both been in the same place with our camera's for quite awhile so we haven't had a chance to compare our settings side by side.

Looking for an bridging body: 80D?

My 7D Mk II is suffering from persisting problems, so I´d like to buy an bridging body, until 5d MK IV arrives.

How does the 80D´s AF work compared with the 7D Mk II?
Is the AF much slower? How big is the advantage of the 80D´s 27 point AF at F8? How fast is it, if you go to f8 with an lens/converter-combo?

I read that the image quality is better than the IQ of the 7D Mk II. What is the highest ISO, you can shoot at, without visible image quality impairment?

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Related Announcements Coming for Photokina [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the EOS 7D Mark II will be getting some attention for Photokina this September with some kit and accessory announcements.</p>
<ol>
<li>A firmware announcement sometime in August, no word on whether it’s just a bug fix update or not. Don’t get your hopes up for a crazy new features! We’ll let you know if we hear any more about it.</li>
<li>The EOS 7D Mark II will come with a new lens kit, likely the new nano-usm EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.</li>
<li>A new “affordable” wifi adaptor for the EOS 7D Mark II.</li>
</ol>
<p>We’re not sure what the new wifi adaptor looks like or what type of throughput it will offer, but if they could release a flash shoe wifi adaptor for around $100 USD, I think they’d get a lot of takers. I don’t think they sold a lot of the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1081826-REG/canon_5754b009_wft_e7a_wireless_file_transmitter.html/bi/2466/kbid/3296">$769 Canon WFT-E7A</a> that is currently available.</p>
<p>We also don’t know if this new wifi adaptor will be specifically for the EOS 7D Mark II.</p>

Gear Help - Alaska - Bristol Bay Lodge

Bristol Bay Lodge - near Dillingham, Alaska

http://www.fishasl.com/bristol-bay-lodge/

I am hoping for some advice – I am taking my 12-year-old for a fishing trip in Alaska. I have never gone on a trip like this before. Also attending will be my business partner and his 14-year-old son. Ideally, I am hoping someone has been here before and could provide some guidance on what equipment to bring… The primary goal is certainly to spend time with my son. With that, we are going to be there for a week and my son is very used to the camera from his sports and loves the pictures. Each morning, a float plane takes us to a new river, drops us off for fishing (specifically fly fishing in waders) for the day and comes back at the end of the day to return us to the lodge. I believe two nights we camp. So the standard what gear to take and how to protect it question…

I have access to a lot of gear (trade / share with friends a lot) and I also don’t mind renting gear. I also keep everything insured but luckily have never needed to use the insurance.

Here are my initial thoughts (all canon lenses):

When fishing / away from the lodge:

• 1DX II & 70-200 f/2.8 IS II in the smallest pelican case storm case it will fit (adding 1.4 II and 2.0 II extenders if room [maybe a 24-70 II if more room?])

Additional equipment at the lodge for wildlife and landscape

• 11-24 f/4, 200-400 f/4 IS USM, & tripod (alternatively 600 f/4 II with extenders available?)

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I like having these types of problems... :)

1Dx2 trouble with 4k video

I have run across a strange problem on my 1Dx2.

While recording to Cfast 4k50 some of my videos are shown as 0KB after transfferred to my harddrive.
The movies I`m able to watch on my camera and it all seems fine.
But trying to open the .mov files from my harddrive it won`t do.

Using DPP the files do not show at all.
I`m on vacation now and don`t have my usual line of programs avaiable to check against.

Any suggestions? I have not run across any problem with corrupted still images as of yet.

Puzzling 1DX Mark II Sensor Issue?

I saw a thread on DPReview where a user was reporting dust issues with his new 1DX Mark II: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4022765

I noticed these strange "brush-like" marks in the DPReview user's image in certain places. When I checked my camera, it is also exhibiting this phenomenon too. I took a sensor loop and peered inside, but there appears to be nothing on the sensor other than dust and oil splatter -- no scratches whatsoever.

What do you all make of this? The picture is a screen grab of a section of the frame from the DPReview user's image. I turned up DeHaze to 100% in Lightroom to emphasize what I'm talking about.

I should state that these marks appear at narrow apertures on my sensor, and this picture below the OP said was taken at f/32.

EDIT: Please see images below.

More Talk About the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II [CR2]

HTML:
There has been a bit more talk about the upcoming Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS II. We haven’t yet nailed down the announcement date, but all indications say it will be before Photokina in September.</p>
<p>We’re told the new lens will have a “digital display” like the Zeiss Batis lenses, what information is on that display is unknown at this time. The lens will also feature nano usm.</p>
<p>We’re also told that the new version is slightly heavier than the previous version due to the front element and has a “stubbier” design.</p>

Relatively speaking does crop focus better?

This is a variety of the crop giving you more reach question.
I have a 5DSR and a 7DII which have basically the same sensor.
I don't know if the 7DII focusing system is considered superior or whether they are comparable.

I was using a Canon 100mm L Macro lens on the 5DSR on Damselflies (which are quite thin).
I wasn't very satisfied with the absolute sharpness of the focusing.
I switched to the 7DII so the Damselflies at the same distance are bigger in the view finder. The camera seems to focus better and more sharply. I felt it was because it was more close up.

Part of it was probably I knew better when to press the button because I could see the subject larger in the viewfinder.

Does it matter to the focusing system whether the sensor is cropped or not. Does the image appear bigger to the focusing system in an APS-C Camera?

I did try the crop sensor setting in the 5DSR but the image in the view finder shrinks.

Blurry Images of Canon EOS 5D Mark IV?

HTML:
Below are some blurry (our favourite) images sent to <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5d4.html" target="_blank">Northlight Images</a> that could be a new DSLR from Canon. I think it’s an EOS 5D Mark III after a quick comparison.</p>

HTML:
<p>We’re told that the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced on August 25, 2016 if you’re based in North America.</p>
<p>The camera will be launched with a new EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II kit along with another current lens kit.</p>
<p>We’re not sure if the new EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III will be announced the same day, or get a separate announcement ahead of Photokina.</p>
<p><strong>*UPDATE*</strong></p>
<p>I don’t know what time of day the announcement will come on August 25, 2016, it could be at 11PM EST, as they have done before. This would make it an August 26, 2016 announcement for a lot of the planet.</p>

Review: Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II

HTML:
I’ll lead by saying that I absolutely love my Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II, I replaced a Sony RX100 III with it and couldn’t be happier. DPReview has now completed their review of the latest G series PowerShot and came away impressed, as it’s a significant improvement over the original PowerShot G7 X.</p>
<p><strong>From DPReview:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the PowerShot G7 X Mark II is that Canon listened to its customers (and maybe some camera reviewers) and dealt with a large number of the problems that people had with its predecessor. Whether it’s something cosmetic like the new grip or noticeably better burst shooting, the G7 X II is what the original should’ve been back in 2014. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g7-x-mark-ii-review">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

16-35 f/4 or f/2.8 for best off-center AF?

Hi, I am having a hard time making a decision on which lens to buy: the existing 16-35 f/4L IS or the upcoming (?) 16-35 f/2.8 III. I am leaning towards the f/4 one as it fits my needs very well, I am just concerned about the autofocus performance difference between 2.8 and 4.0 maximum apertures.

I am currently looking at the following comparison of AF patterns: http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/16399/what-apertures-are-required-to-enable-autofocus-including-cross-type-or-high-pr

For newer cameras, the only real differences between f/2.8 and f/4 would be in the high-precision sensors and dual cross-type points however, looking at the AF patterns, these points are typically in the image center. I do not happen to be using the center part very much for focusing so I am more concerned about the off center ones.

My questions are:
[list type=decimal]
[*]Am I missing any differences here? Even with the usual f/4 or f/5.6 sensitive points will the camera focus better with a f/2.8 lens rather than with a f/4 one (I wouldn't be surprised as there is more light available with a f/2.8 lens with maximum aperture, so the one that is used for focusing)
[*]Do you foresee that high-precision or dual cross-type points will be used closer to the edges in new cameras? The range seems to be growing (slowly) for the recents models, it's currently a column rather than one point.[/list]

I am mostly asking about the future direction (the camera is secondary to me really), but if this really matters, I will be using the lens with 7D (and 40D to some extent) now but I am planning on getting a 5D Mark IV (when it happens), will also consider 7D Mark III / 6D Mark II (if they happen).

AF precision is critical for me, it will be a deciding factor in the lens choice.

Thanks!

Kingfisher - what a bird

I really got fascinated by this bird. I am sure others too. In my country it seems to be one of the most interesting birds. I went to a hidingplace close to the water and there was a lot of activity going on. I was hoping to capture the kingfisher in action but those birds are difficult to capture once they take off to catch a fish. But once they sit on a branch you can easily take portraits.
All photos were captured with 5D MKIII and 100-400 II. I used mostly f/7.1 and variation of shutterspeed and iso.
I later found out that I needed to micro adjust my autofocus so not all photos are as sharp as I wanted.

Crazy Patent: Canon EF 40-800mm f/4.5-5.6

HTML:
Here’s a crazy optical formula patent from Canon, an EF 40-800mm f/4.5-5.6 superzoom lens. The folks at Egami say it’s for a full frame DSLR and is an internal zoom lens.</p>

<p>As <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=30329.msg608857#msg608857">pointed out on our forum</a>, the patent contains 4 lens designs, two of them are for full frame, and two are for a PowerShot application. The likelihood of such a lens coming to fruition in full frame form? I’d say zero chance, but stranger things have happened.</p>
