A Canon DSLR First Coming to EOS 5D Mark IV [CR2]

HTML:

The teasing of features and information has started ahead of the August announcement of the EOS 5D Mark IV from Canon.

We’re told that the new camera will have a DSLR first from Canon, but the source was unsure if any other manufacturer has or will have the same feature in one of their cameras. While we’re told that the feature “isn’t major”, it is something “a lot of shooters will be happy to have”.

We expect a lot more information over the next few weeks, and we’re working hard daily trying to get some new bits of information.

What sort of “DSLR first” feature do you want to see in a Canon DSLR?

Sigma 20 ART + Condensation

Gday.

As a happy owner of a Sigma Art 20mm f1.4; I have found myself - twice now - suffering from trying to take photos and realising the front element is fogged up.

This is something that I haven't experienced generally until now.

The first time this happened I was up on a mountain at night, with two layers of wind-proof clothing and a "feels-like" of -12C. My sigma lens was initially okay. But then, a few minutes into taking photos it started fogging up behind the front element. So I switched to my 8-15mm L fisheye, and that one didn't have any problem. (Both lenses were in the car cabin before I went out - the fisheye being in a pouch while I used the sigma before it fogged up).

The second time this happened, it wasn't that cold. It was 9C and I had been driving in the car (a hatchback) and stopped to take some photos. Inside the car it wasn't that hot either. It was maybe 17C. I went out to take photos and saw that my viewfinder was hazy. I looked at the front element of the sigma, and water had condensed on top!. I wiped with with my tshirt, which didn't help; I wiped with my hoodie that was in the car, and i wiped and wiped until there was no water left, then once more with the microfibre cloth, and back to photo taking.

This weekend, I'm going to the snow and was hoping to carry my camera in my backpack (with batteries on my person) and well, do I take the Sigma? Previous experience shows that it'll probably fog up or condense. Is my Sigma dodgy? or does it have something to do with the Sigma NOT having "weather sealing" and the fisheye having it? NB: My other lenses, 24-105L and 70-300L have never fogged up either.

Thank you for your time.

House being gassed for termites -- any impact to cameras, lenses, etc.?

My house needs to be fumigated for termites. I'm told the fumigation doesn't meddle with general consumer electronics, but in ignorance of the specifics, I obviously worry about the photography gear.

Can anyone speak to what the fumigation process might do to my gear? Will simple poly bagging solve the problem? Should I just rent a few Pelicans and seal everything up, or do I need to actually to migrate all my gear to our temporary housing for the duration?

Also, I have a storage cabinet that is far too large/heavy to temporarily relocate. If the gas is indeed a threat to my gear, I'd hate to have the various foam elements in that case (TrekPak + yoga mat) outgas some nastiness back into my gear after we return. Should I just bag the entire cabinet?

Thanks,
A

Second hand body dilemma - 6D or 5D3

I have a Canon 7D2 for wildlife and action photography and would like something to offer more options in low light where ISO creeps up to 1600+. The limitations of the 7Dii for me lie largely in the noise you start to see above 800 especially with shadow recovery. Current lenses are 100-400ii and 70-200f4LIS and 17-55 f2.8.
I will be buying this camera second hand and based on much reading, my thinking is:

6D - Second hand price about £900. AF is decent for slow-moving wildlife and is very good in low light. Given that a lot of my wildlife stuff is cropped even on the 7Dii, I am not sure how the image quality of the 6D holds up vs 7Dii when cropped to the same FOV (BTW: I know I need to improve field skills but let's park that one for now). The 6D has a lower frame rate than the other models but at the moment I am probably not going to shoot a lot of fast action stuff at those light levels.
Overall, the price makes the 6D my benchmark against which I need to see significant benefits in getting a different model

5D3 - Second hand price about £1,700 so a considerably greater outlay. The AF is about equal to the 7Dii which I have anyway. The 5D3 image is about equal to the 6D and when cropped to the same FOV as the 7Dii is not much different (in good light, anyway). The main discussion I have seen is the reliability of the AF vs the 7Dii and the 5D3 seems to edge it.
So the main benefit of the 5D3 compared to the 6D is its versatility in giving me 6D+7Dii in a single body.

5DSR - this is a tricky one. Sort of combines the 5D3 and the 7Dii in a single body. At FF image quality seems on par with the 5D3 and when cropped gives the same resolution as the 7D2. The significantly higher price makes it very hard to justify

So my conclusion is that if I do not mind having 2 bodies, and I do not mind making the decision before I leave home which body I want with me, then the 6D makes a pretty sound case for itself.

Would anyone come to a different conclusion?

100-400 II Focus creep with long intervalometer runs

I've been doing much intervalometer work for time lapses and, particularly, for wildlife observation. I'm noticing that I am getting an increasing level of back focusing over time as the exposures rack up with an intervalometer run.

This is on my 7D2 today, but it's also happened as frequently with my 1DX I.

I suspect the vibration from thousands of clicks a few seconds apart from one another very slowly moves the focus ring. It's generally noticeable after about 1500 clicks. I have my bodies hooked up to power, so I'm doing quite long sets of exposures about 4 seconds apart.

To give a sense of scale, I was shooting a loon nest this afternoon, starting off with perfect focus on the sitting bird about 200 feet away, but by 2500 exposures, the focus had crept back about 15 feet behind. At f/8 this was way out of the focus plane.

I had the lens set to manual focus, IS on mode III (was clamped to a duck blind, but it vibrated a lot in the wind so mode II produces sharpest images).

I wonder if others have noticed this, and if there's anything that could mitigate this issue.

Thanks, -tig

35mm IS Image quality- ghosting, bokeh, fringing

Im wondering how other users experience has been with this lens.

I've rented the lens quite a few times over the last year or so, and i was looking forward to owning one. So I recently purchased from canon refurb (last time, never again) and to say that I am unimpressed with the image quality is an understatement.

All of the reviews - and rentals- of this lens has led me to believe that everyday use should result in superb performance, relatively on par with th2 older 35 1.4, but sharper. That is in no why the case with this copy i have. I have used on my t2i, M1 and my 5d3.

Here is some 100%, sooc crops. im looking for more examples.

Main issues:

• Horrendous green fringing + nervous bokeh makes oof look plain UGLY
• Looks like some pretty severe ghosting. In only one single review of this lens I've seen it mentioned. and hey, correct me inf I'm wrong, it's the first time I've seen this weird effect
• Not really fixable, but the overall image rendering is definitely not L quality (imho).

In the meantime, I will be referencing images from my past rentals to compare against, then the lens will be sent to the shop.

Cheers

5D2 over exposes by ~7 stops

Today my 5D2 started over exposing quite consistently at +7 when using the view fiender. Live view works perfectly fine and the over exposure is the same no matter what setting the camera is in. Given this I assume the light meter has packed in our something has gotten dislodged in there since it can tell the difference between light and dark. It is however completely wrong. I've found some references to this fenomenen on the Internet but only one who has had it fixed (shutter assembly). Any ideas what this might cost as I imagine it'll be a canon repair centre fix. Also since I'm not a cps member does it make more sense to contact a third party repair centre hoping it'll be cheaper given the age of the camera?

Canon EF 300 F2.8 IS USM II for wildlife

Hi all,
It seems that I'm having a rare chance to obtain a mint condition second hand copy of this great lens at a very reasonable price. I'm not a full time pro by any means, however I spend the majority of my free time with wildlife photography. I'm more into mammals, especially deers, foxes, I'm not a birder though. I have been using a 6D and a 400 5.6 for that purpose, which really worked out for me over the years. I am planning an upgrade mainly, because most of my wildlife photography takes place in low light situations. It would also be nice to get more separation between the subject and the background. My idea would be using this lens mostly with a 1.4 extender as 300 on FF is too short even for big mammals, which is 1 stop gain over the recent combo. However, I would still have option to go 600 F5.6 with an 2x extender and 2.8 at bare 300 would be awsome, as well.
Aside from price, do you guys consider 300 F2.8 IS USM II+ extenders a reasonable upgrade in terms of IQ, bokeh, etc over the recent 400 5.6? I would love to have some inputs of 300 II owners.

Thanks for reading!

Adam

FINALLY GOT A 5D3, BUT.........

Its not sharp on the top vertical point, so if I was doinga fashion show on atripod and shooting vertical, I'd jave to use the CENTRE POINT to get the models sharp. I red ken rockwell's review and found this..

"AF-Area Distribution

Sure, there are a lot of AF points, but they're all in a very narrow band spread from left to right. They don't go very far above or below the centerline, so for most compositions, there is no sensor where I need it.

When shooting vertically, this means that the sea of AF areas is a narrow vertical band, not reaching very far left or right."

So, what is the point in having all these outer focus points if they add nothing to the sharpness? I upgraded from a 5D2, because I was always using the centre point on that and now, after spending the money on a 5d3, I'm USING THE CENTRE POINT.

Feeling a bit let down.

Anything shot with the EOS 80D

I continue to like this purchase. Nice details and file latitude.

Evolutionary Chart of EF Lenses 1987-2016

So. I was bored and decided to create a flowchart showing the "evolution" of EF lenses since 1987. It's quite handy if you want to see how various second-hand lenses fit into the scheme of things.

This is a work in progress and I'd be interested in any comments and suggestions about how it could be improved.

Once I'm more confident the content and interconnections are OK I'll spend more time making it prettier :)

PCB Vagabond Mini Lithium DIY rebuild

My pair of VML's are not holding a useful charge any more. Restrictions air-freighting lithium batteries makes return to PCB in Nashville Tennessee from Sydney for rebuilds a non-starter.

Has anyone done a DIY rebuild of VML's or can provide links to tutorials? A 15 minute Google search didn't come up with anything, maybe my search terms weren't perfect. It can't be rocket science.

Thanks!
