1DX II and DXO Mark

If the 1DXII does indeed have at least 2-3 stops better DR, how will it do in DXO's tests?

  • They will be given a fair and accurate score

    Votes: 8 15.1%
  • Not sure, they might or might not give a fair rating

    Votes: 7 13.2%
  • DXO Mark fair? What a joke!

    Votes: 23 43.4%
  • I don't give a hoot

    Votes: 15 28.3%

I am very interested to see how they rate the 1DXII considering they love Canon so much...

1DX2 Remote Release?

Looking at the photos of the body as well as poking through the list of compatible accessories, it looks like Canon has decided to do away with the classic three-pin remote release port. I haven't read anything about that change on any official documents.

Has anyone heard anything about this, or know if there's an alternative (that's still wired)? It would be strange for a 1D to be released without that, but would be equally strange to have that accessory work via USB or something.

Canon 6d low ISO

Funny how i hear about how bad canon sensors are at low iso with all these silly test dxo uses. If the 6d is this good, how awesome will the 1dx II be?
shot at iso 100
shot one as is from raw
shot two raised 5 stops in photoshop
shot 3 100 percent shadows raised
For everyone that is worried about these silly test and has tons of canon glass just get a 6d and sleep well knowing it was the cheapest full frame that also has a sensor that is pure magic.

Tamron Teases New Lenses

HTML:
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/sigma-to-announce-two-new-lenses-on-february-23/">Not to be outdone by Sigma</a>, Tamron is now teasing what looks to be a pair of lenses for CP+. Tamron Switzerland posted the teaser on their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/479287858772601/photos/a.512988925402494.124215.479287858772601/1137716979596349/?type=3&theater" target="_blank">Facebook page</a> and it shows the bottom of two lens barrels. Is Tamron readying their 85mm prime?</p>
<p>It looks like we only have to wait until February 22, 2016 for the unveiling.</p>

Embed small watermark in "internet versions"? + Portfolio usage

Occasionally, I photograph a wedding or other formal ceremony. Until now, I didn't have a contract and I just did all the communication via email. Recently, I had several bad experiences: clients violating agreements and refusing to pay :(

This made me think to set up terms&conditions. Suddenly, I was asked to photograph a ceremony in seven days. Since I didn't have anything and wanted to be more 'strict' I made some clear terms&conditions and now my client complainds about two of these 'rules':

1) I wanted to put a small watermark of my homepage in the bottom right corner of my photos. I would then supply the client with two copies of each photo: full-res without watermark and about 1000px with small watermark for facebook etc.

2) I asked permission to use the photos for promotional activities (i.e. in my portfolio). He wants to give explicit written permission for each photo before I can use it.

3) If you do supply all the photos without any whatermark, is it then fair to request that the photographer is mentioned when photos are published by the client?

It is common practice for photographers to ask for permission in a contract so the photographer can use whatever he likes on his website(s)? What do you think of it?
What is you opinion on watermarks? Obviously, gray, small and only in the bottom and about 30% opacity, not large black or white text.

Here's an example:

Question about using Sigma 150-600 on Gimbal Head

I recently bought a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary (love it) and have a Carbon Fiber gimbal head for it. I have found that, since the foot only has one screw hole, I can't get it as secure as I'd like. I find that, no matter how tight I try to screw the Arca plate onto the foot, when I pan with the Gimbal head, after a while, the foot comes loose and starts to turn on the plate. I'm just wondering what tricks (if any) those of you with either this lens or the similar Tamron have to mitigate this problem? I think the Sigma Sport lens allows you to screw on the foot at two points, but the C model only has one screw hole on the foot.

Thoughts, ideas?

Sigma To Announce Two New Lenses on February 23

HTML:
<p>Sigma is now teasing two lenses for a February 23, 2016 announcement.</p>
<p>The first is the larger “world’s first” lens. In the above image, it has been hypothesized that the lens has both a zoom and focus ring in the outline. Which is making a lot of the internet thing it’s a faster than f/2.8 short telephoto zoom.</p>
<p>We’re told this about the bigger of the two lenses.</p>
<blockquote><p>The bigger one is indeed a zoom lens, but not a 24-70, not 70-200 and not a 85-135 or a 50-135/50-150</p></blockquote>
<p>The second in the image above is a smaller prime lens. Sadly, it looks too small to be the 85mm f/1.4 Art series lens. It could be a lens for a mirrorless system(s).</p>
<p><em>*Note: Most of this information comes from the Sigma Hungary Facebook page, which I cannot find at the moment due to very slow internet access.</em></p>
<p><em>Thanks Mark</em></p>

issues KEH website

KEH is the place for used gear - great selection and accurate descriptions. However I was just on their website (redone maybe a year ago) and there is a major issue in the filtering for Canon. You can filter by lens mount, and for Canon autofocus of course the choices are EF (full frame) or EF-S (crop sensor). I did EF which was fine for Canon brand lenses, but the aftermarket lenses including a lot of EF-S lenses. The problem is in their description they call it Canon EF mount for APS-C. Well hello, if it is for APS-C, then it is EF-S mount, not EF. I would have thought someone with the experience of KEH would know better. Really annoying and I filled out their online survey to inform them of the issue.

"February 14" - Valentine's Day Comedy (Tamron 45mm 1.8 and LIT WITH IPHONES!)

First of all.. Happy Valentine's Day!

Made a new comedy titled "February 14" - shot completely on the Tamron 45mm F1.8 8) the F1.8 aperture was crucial for shooting the scenes at night, especially since I didn't want to push the ISO too much on my 5D Mark ii.

Despite the large aperture, there just wasn't enough light.. And being a student, I lack money for fancy LED panels :/ but no problem, I like to think that limitations forces us to think out of the box! Hence, I used a gold reflector to bounce two iPhones' flashlight onto my actors to get that golden hour/sunset shot ;D I think it worked out fairly well, aside from the fact that it would have looked more natural if I placed the light on the other side :/ watch the "Behind the scenes" to see what I'm talking about!

Just goes to show that you don't need lots of equipment, money or crew to tell a story! Equipment's only part of the equation, a very small part :) Let me know what you think of my video and hope it'll make your day ahaha

Enjoy and hope you all have a lovely day, whether you're in a relationship or not :)

Nikon 200-500mm vs Canon 100-400mm II

I have been following the reviews of the 200-500mm with great interest to see if it a superior alternative to Canon offerings. By coincidence, I was able to handle one yesterday and also TDP posted its image quality on the D3S.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=1035&Camera=614&Sample=0&FLI=3&API=0&LensComp=972&CameraComp=963&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=4&APIComp=1

Reviews so far have frequently raved about the sharpness of the 200-500mm but there is near unanimity that its AF is slow for BIF. However, the MTFs on ePhotozine are not remarkable and you have to stop down to f/8 - f/11 for best sharpness. One I reviewer decided to keep his Sigma 150-600mm S as it was significantly sharper and sell the 200-500mm.

The TDP tests show it has much poorer IQ than the 100-400mm on the 1Ds3, and the Canon with a 1.4x TC is still sharper. In addition, the 100-400mm II on the 7DII has better IQ than the 200-500mm on Nikon FF and with more effective reach. The Nikon at 2.4 kg is more than 700 g heavier than the Canon lens. So, I am not tempted to migrate to the D500 + 200-500mm.

Are prime lenses more weather resistant then zoom lenses?

So I'm leaving for Iceland next week and I'm packing my camera gear right now when I started to wonder which lens would be more weather resistant to snow and rain, my Canon 24mm 1.4 ii or my 24-70 2.8 ii I'm thinking it should be the prime as the zoom extends and snow/rain could get in the barrel.

What do you guys think? sorry if it's a bit of a stupid question.

17mm TSE + aps-c

Hi all,

I must admit i have only spent 30mins searching on google, but i will ask anyway

I understand that a 17mm TSE without shift will give 17mm on FF. And if use on aps-c i get 17x1.6=27mm eqv on FF. But thats without shifting.

On FF, if i do maximum shift horizontally on left and right, and stitch the images in post, i get a field of view around 10.5mm eqv. In theory, the shift will allow aps-c bodies to do the same. Afterall, the lens just project the same image, it's only the sensor thats determining how much of that image can be captured. However, in practice i know there may be other mechanical limitation on how much i can shift with the lens (the knob and slide wont let u go further?). So my question is, do you know if i can still get the full 10.5mm horizontal coverage if i use something like 7D2 with 17mm TSE? Thanks.

eDIT: or word it differently, if i use 7D2 with 17TSE and shift to the most far left (or right), will i see the black edge where the image circle ends? Thanks

Intresting statements:

Update # 3: Noise
So far I have found nothing in what I opened Rawy (admittedly much I was looking for) so I can make a comparison with the JPG off noise reduction (High ISO Noise Reduction: Disabled). findings:

Noise level looks a lot like predecessors 1D X. It is possible that the sharp firmware will still have some improvements, but I would not count on it.
Noise is up to ISO 25600 practically monochromatic, gone are the sort of large, colored spots, which are poorly eliminate the postprocessing. This may indicate DR promised better (cleaner shadows), or just better noise reduction. Anyway, this is good news.
ISO 102 400 and my come higher useful, as in 1D X.
Update # 4: The noise in the RAW
RAW Therapeutics (ghastly program, btw) can be read from Rawy 1D X Mark II. Small compared to the 1D X and demonstration of what happens when the shadows compensation in postprocessing +5 EV. Progress is clearly visible!

I will be putting everything on my blog as well. It's in czech, but you can use Google translator:

User got ahold of a demo unit and used Raw Therapee to open the RAW files. User also has a 1DX. He used the same settings on both. Pretty dramatic difference in noise.

EDIT: Hey everyone, the original poster of this picture asked me to remove it, per his relationship with Canon. I'd never want to jeopardize that for someone else, it's not my place, so I'm happy to remove it. Besides, I think everyone who wanted to see it, has seen it. And if there are any that haven't, they can certainly simply read the comments posted and understand the image. Hope you all understand. Thanks!
