Canon EOS-1D C vs Nikon D5 for 4K Video

HTML:
Which flagship DSLR is better for 4K video recording, the released in 2012 Canon EOS-1D C, or the recently announced Nikon D5?</p>
<p>Andrew at EOSHD says the Canon EOS-1D C is still the superior 4K DSLR for cinematographers.</p>
<blockquote><p>This time it’s a win for Canon. Although it was released nearly 4 years ago in 2012 the Canon 1D C remains superior to the current Nikon D5 flagship for 4K, which I find puzzling because technology goes a very long way in 4 years. <a href="http://www.eoshd.com/2016/01/nikon-d5-versus-canon-1d-c-cinematic-4k-video-wins/" target="_blank">Read the full comparison</a></p></blockquote>
<p>There is a ton of talk about 4K in Canon’s next generation of full frame cameras, namely the EOS-1D X Mark II, which will have it and the EOS 5D Mark IV, which is still up in the air. There just hasn’t been any reliable information about whether or not Canon will put 4K into the EOS 5D Mark IV. If Nikon hasn’t implemented 4K as well as Canon did 4 years ago, that would be quite an interesting development and may be telling about 4K development in DSLRs going forward.</p>
<p>Based on specifications, do you agree with EOSHD’s assessment of the EOS-1D C vs D5?</p>

EOS-1D X Mark II Claims of 15 Stops of DR [CR3]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon will claim 15+ stops of dynamic range for the new Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. This claim was also made for the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II, which may be true at the hardware level, but in practice it may not actually perform to that specification. Let’s hope it’s actually the case with the new 22mp sensor.</p>
<p>Specifications for this camera have been extremely slow to come in from known sources. There is definitely a much tighter ship being run at Canon, but we do expect more to leak out as we approach an announcement in the next 4-8 weeks.</p>

Question: To be expected native ISO range in 1DxII, 5DIV, 6DII?

Hi,
Looking at the evolutionary development and some vague hints at enhanced sensor tech by Canon, which native ISO range can be expected concerning upcoming bodies including all the necessary components: architecture, processors, etc? I can't care less for marketing gimmickish ISO3.2 Mega. But a decent enhancement and lesser noise within the 12800-25600 range (especially in the next 5D) would be very welcomed...

1DXII 22 MP: ISO 100-102.400 or 204.800?
5DIV 24-28 MP: ISO 100-51200 or 102400?
6DII 24 MP: (slightly lower MP count similar to the first version?) ISO 100-51200?

These questions are way too hypothetical of course, it's mere guess work by interpolating current data and hints given the announcements this past week. Would be great if anyone of the experts here could add their 0.2 cents. Thanks and regards, Peter

Maximal senseful Iso on 7D Mark II or sensor problem?

I tried some lenses yesterday on an workshop. 400,500,600mm primes mounted on 1DX, 5DIII, 6D, 7Dii, 70D. There I realized, that the Canon trainer´s 7D Mark II took visibly better images than mine 7D II did. The trainer told us, that his 7D II was able to use Iso 3200 without much impairment on the image quality. But my body shows much more colour noise and is not as sharp as the trainers body. We synchronized the settings. And he did an basic autofocus adjustment with an portable inclined plane with rulers and signs on. But if I raise the ISO over 800, there is much more colour noise.

Someone told me, that Canon will send out just well-chosen and maximally optimized bodies for workshops.
What can I do, or do I have to accept this limitations? Should I send it to Canon to do an inspectation?

Need a kids sports/family camera setup for $3k

I sold all my gear because I am buying a house and needed the money. I am really trilying hard to get a FF body, standard zoom, flash for $3k or less.

I have found an open box deal at adorama for the 5d3 with 24-70 f4 kit and figured I could get a 430ex iii for about $270.

Any suggestions to save money or alternate setups would be appreciated. I have never purchased grey market so am hesitant to do that. I also have thought about a 6d 24-105 kit and a 7d2 body but thats a little more. Another option is to wait a few months to see if canon announces anything. I know I sold too much and should have saved some. But too late.

D500 hands-on feedback/review posted on Petapixel

You will find more insight in a fortune cookie than from this nonsense of D500 puff piece:

http://petapixel.com/2016/01/09/i-shot-with-the-nikon-d500-here-are-my-thoughts/

My favorite bit:

"Not only does this camera have an astounding native range – ISO 100 to 51200 — but the quality in this range is just tremendous. What Nikon has done is basically made a DX sensor that shoots in the dark like a full-frame sensor. That’s how good the high ISO image quality is.

And if 51200 isn’t enough, the D500 offers not just HI-1, HI-2, or 3… but HI-5 for an equivalent of ISO 1640000. Yes. ISO One-Point-Six-Million. Million.

Overall, the image quality that the D500 delivers at high ISO is excellent. I consider it a bad day at the office if I have to stretch to ISO 12800, but even here the D500 offers outstanding image quality, not to mention seven (!) more stops of headroom."

I'm sure there's a fine sensor in there, but this is ridiculous.

Question about repair costs for a 24-70 2.8ii and maybe a 1DX

Hey everyone, so earlier today I was up hiking on the Norwegian mountains when I slipped really badly and injured my ankle but more importantly cracked the back mount of my 24-70 on my 1dx. the back end of the lens is mounted on the camera and the lens came off flying, the elements don't look cracked.

I'm wondering if any of you might be able to give me an estimate on repair costs for this here are a few pictures of the lens.

thankfully the 1DX brick like as it is, is fine from what I can tell, takes pictures and still autofocuses.

Which FF body should I rent?

Hi folks!

I do read a lot of your comments and really hope that you can make a suggestion based upon your own experience. I know all the specs of the camera, but that doesn't mean anything, I would like to hear true first hand suggestions from experienced shooters like you. Thanks for that.

I'm heading out for a two week rainforest experience in southern america. I own a 7D MkII, 100mm L IS Macro, 100-400mm IS Mk2, 50mm f1.4 and a 10-20mm Sigma f4-5.6 (and a couple of flashes (ringflash, EX-600RT)

I seriously consider renting a fullframe body + landscape lens (16-35mm f4??) as I'm not very happy with the Sigma 10-20mm. But it would also be awesome to maybe us the FF with the 100-400mm when I don't need that much reach but better IQ for example.

Now please, feel free to make suggestions and tell me which camera I should rent and why. I tend to the 5DSR, but the pixel count is very high and I'm not sure how good this camera is compared to the 7D Mk2 regarding high ISO. I tend to flash the birds with the 100-400 + 600RT flash because I want to keep the ISO low on the 7D Mk2, but maybe I do not need to flash with a FF and can crank up the possible shadows in post?

Thank you guys for your help and cheers
Martin

Nikon D5 and D500 Internal Nikon Q&A

I thought this was worthy of its own thread as NikonRumors has got its hands on two supposedly confidential internal Nikon documents explaining the D5 and D500. A Q&A for both. I thought it was quite interesting:

D5 is here:

http://nikonrumors.com/2016/01/08/nikon-d5-specifications-and-features-explained-confidential-nikon-internal-document.aspx/

D500 is here:

Enjoy.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II To Be 22mp [CR3]

HTML:
<p>One of the big questions we all wanted to know, is what is the pixel count on the EOS-1D X Mark II is going to be? We’re told from a very reliable source that we’re looking at a newly developed 22mp sensor for the EOS-1D X Mark II. 22mp is in the range we expected and adds 4mp over the EOS-1D X.</p>
<p>The camera is in late stage testing and some production has started.</p>

Canon continues to develop diffractive optics technology, and this time it’s for the EF-M mount. A patent for an EF-M 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS optical formula has appeared. The lens is for APS-C mirrorless cameras.</p>

Canon 24mm 1.4 L ii Front Focus Issue?

Hi all, over the Christmas break I sent my Canon 24mm 1.4 L ii and 5D Mark iii to Fixation UK for lens calibration (MF adjustment) this was due to issues with front focusing and despite it locking on to focus (center point). The work to be carried out according to the report from Fixation was: Set up and recalibrate , Focus System , Check and clean (Technicians' Comments: No optical issues however lens zero position could be improved). I also checked my 5D Mark iii AF MF menu which is disabled, are Canon lenses calibrated any other way?

Today I received the lens and camera back today and pulled it out the box in excitement, took a few shots with the came on a tripod and shot the boxes that I had unboxed in my excitement. I shot about 2 meters away from the subject using the center focus point at the letters 24 MM on the lens box. To my surprise it produced defocused image and for some reason my sofas's corner seemed to be more in focus. Now I'm unsure if this is my technique here with such wide prime (its the only focal length I've had an issue with), or if there is an issue. I tried few more shots of different objects and results seemed the same.

I have attached an image of the box I shot, please let me know your views. I may give Fixation a call in the morning.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Coming in April 2016 [CR3]

HTML:
<p>Barring some kind of unforeseen issue, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will be shipping some time in April 2016. <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-1d-x-mark-ii-availability-in-2016-cr2/">We mentioned this a few months ago</a> and it looks like things haven’t changed.</p>
<p>What may have changed is when the camera is announced, right now the latest information says a February/March announcement for the new camera. With Nikon having recently announced their flagship D5 which begins shipping in March of 2016, there’s no reason to announce right away. However, announcing before the Nikon starts shipping is probably very likely.</p>
<p>The current planned price for the new EOS-1D X Mark II is $5999, but that could change slightly depending on currency strength at the time of the announcement, but it will be cheaper than the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1214152-REG/nikon_1557_d5_dslr_camera_body.html/BI/2466/KBID/3296/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x700340" target="_blank">$6496 Nikon D5</a>.</p>
<p>The only specification we have confirmed is that it will record 4K video, just like the D5.</p>

fast focussing 20mm f1.4 - does such a lens exist (for crop factor)?

Yes, I know about the Sigma f1.8 zoom but based on reviews I'm not confident about the focus speed.

Here's what I'm trying to do (I'll add pics when I get home): my kid dragged me to Woodward Tahoe where they have big skateboard ramps that end in foam pits. He insisted I use the 7D II because of the 10 fps (I normally use the 5d3). He was right, fun shots.

I was using the 17-55 f2.8, mostly at 20mm (they let me stand in the foam pit so the skaters were right next to me). The light was not so great so I was shooting at 1/320th, ISO 8000. Hence my desire to find a prime at f.14 or f1.8. I know about the Canon 24mm II but that appears to be soft wide open (according to Brian and I trust his reviews).

I have to believe someone here has done the same thing and found a lens they like.

I suppose the alternative is to get a used 1Dx I and use it with my 35mm f2 :)

Focus Stacking

This isn't an abstract photo but I'm not sure where else to put it. I decided to try a bit of focus stacking using Franzis' FOCUS Projects 3 Professional software, a 7D (original) and a 100mmL f/2.8 macro lens. I'll get the hang of it eventually. Here is my paternal grandfather's watch. I'm also including a similar focus stacked image taken with my Fujifilm X-T10 and 18-55mm f/2.8-4 lens.

1. Canon
2. Fuji

Will Gray Market Prices Drop Again?

With additional devaluation of the Yuan, prices on items imported from China are going to drop. Generally, this affects items produced in China, but this leaves companies like Canon in a bind. China is a huge market, so Canon can't really afford to raise prices in China and lose sales.

Gray market importers will be able to purchase cameras in China using US dollars (Euros, Pounds, etc) and get a lower price. Canon's response is to sue gray market importers, but that is not going to help. Buyers can order directly from China at lower prices as well.
