RAW file size of crop mode in 5Ds/5DsR

According to the specs on usa.canon.com, the 1.3x and 1.6x crop modes produce identical size CR2 files to 1.0x images:
Crop/Aspect RatioImage File Size (Approx. MB)
Full-frame60.5
1.3x crop60.5
1.6x crop60.5
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_5ds#Specifications

If you plan on using this body for shooting events in MRAW/SRAW and 1.6x crop when reach is needed to speed up your workflow (with the option to still use full resolution for low shutter count outings), those hopes look to be dashed.

Could Canon have incorrect data listed on their site, or is it just as simple as a full 50 MP CR2 file with a flag set for cropping in the raw editor?

Err 80 - Should I Worry?

I have 5D Mark III purchased new in June 2012 (shutter count unknown but probably in the 10,000 range). I was shooting a portrait session a couple of days ago with the MIII and 70-200 2.8L II when all of a sudden I locked up with Err 80 on the top LCD. I've heard of this error before and know it can be a real source of worry, but never concerned myself with it as I had never experienced with this camera or the 5D II and 40D I used as predecessors.

In addition to a San Disk 8GB CF card, I also have a fairly new EyeFi Mobi card, which was in use at the time. However, I have used that EyeFi card on at least half dozen occasions since November without issue.

Needless to say my heart skipped a beat. Powering off and back on didn't help so I pulled the battery and put a new on in and was able to restore function immediately. I finished that session and did another complete session the next day without problems.

What is my camera telling me? Am I on the cusp of a fatal failure? Is this something that can just randomly pop up and disappear again like it did for me here? What should I be looking at and thinking about?

Thanks.

External battery for DR-E6?

I would like to use a Canon DR-E6 (battery with cable) and plug into an external battery such as an Anker. However reading through the internet it sounds like I will need to wire in a DC-DC converter for the Canon’s power requirements. I am wondering if anyone knows of another external battery option like the Anker that outputs 8.2V so I don’t have to add the converter?

Any suggestions or insights are very appreciated.

thanks,

Jeff

More Confirmation EOS C300 Mark II Will be 4K

HTML:
<p>We’re told again that the upcoming Canon EOS C300 Mark II will be 4K along with a host of other upgrades. You can expect the C300 Mark II to be a bigger update than the EOS C100 Mark II was to its predecessor. We’re also told it’s going to be priced very aggressively, to better compete with Sony’s FS7 which is $7999 USD.</p>
<p>Expect the Canon EOS C300 Mark II to be announced before NAB 2015 in April.</p>

RØDE SmartLav+ Lavalier Microphone Review by Dustin Abbott

Hi, everyone. As many of you know, I do video reviews on YouTube as part of my review process. I needed a decent lavalier mic solution for getting audio. I settled on the RØDE SmartLav+. Here's a review along with a breif video review to show its effectiveness in the field.

Have any of you used the SmartLav+ (not to be confused with the previous SmarLav that didn't have as good of sound quality)? What are your thoughts?

Help with an unusual macro setup

I am hoping to make a low power microscope (40-50x) using a quality camera and lens.
Using a 22 inch computer monitor, I need to get a live display feed at 1920×1080 of what the camera is seeing. I will use a 1:1 macro lens and I am hoping that I can use a digital zoom produced by the camera to gain an a extra 3-4x of magnification.

What I am not sure about is what cameras (if any) can provide this live view AND allow a 3-4x digital zoom (at 1920×1080 ). I also don’t want any of the cameras menus on the computer screen and 30 fps is a minimum.

I have been waiting for the 50mp cameras to come out as this will buy me an extra mag level but now, I can’t find out if the new cameras, or any camera for that matter, will work in my application.

Any help would be very appreciated.

EDIT: The wording of my first question seems confusing, so here is V2.

If somebody was to give you the choice of one of the above options as a gift which would you find most beneficial for your photography, or which would you most like to own.

No selling to get something else or other work arounds, which of the three choices would you most ike in your bag?

------------------------------------------------

Earlier version:

To refine the question a little, the 14-24 and 11-24 both have bulbous front elements and need a Wonderpana style filter solution, the 16-35 would have a regular 82mm filter thread.

As a sub question, how much would cost impact your purchase, if they were all the same price which would you buy or covet the most?

1D Mark IV focus button locks exposure

Hi!
Can anyone tell my why the focus button on the rear of my 1D mark IV locks my exposure? I have the camera set up to focus using only the rear focus button (not the shutter release). I tend to hold the rear focus button down when I'm shooting moving subjects (wildlife and children), but since I started using this focusing method my exposure is often wildly off when moving between say, sun and shade. So I have concluded that the focus button is locking the exposure. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I can't see anything obvious in the menus.
Thanks.

DR from 5Ds will be 2 stop better then 7D mk II

From
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5ds.html

"a release 5Dsr with a test version of DPP4. Low ISO DR is put at 1.5-2 stops better than the 1D X, but high ISO performance (6400) falls marginally behind the 7Dmk2.
The sensor is similar to the 7D2 technology, but has apparently been tuned to maximise low ISO performance.
Welcome news here, but I know it won't be popular in some quarters. If it means that Canon have been listening to some of its pro market and produced a camera for the likes of myself, then great.
If you wanted faster fps, high ISO and better video, then perhaps you can appreciate how I (and many others) felt looking at the 1D X ?"

That would explain why a camera with the same pixel pitch of the 7D2 should have max ISO of 6400 instead 16000 !
Especially when there would be the resolution advantage.... If did t make any sense....!
I guess that's a good news for Landscape photographers !

New Unique Macro Coming? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that a “world’s first” macro is coming from Canon some time in the next year. This is all we were told and can’t even begin to guess what the “world’s first” would mean.</p>
<p>Canon has been pretty innovative in lens design, from the EF 8-15 f/4 zoom fisheye, the 1.4x built-in teleconverter in the EF 200-400 f/4L IS, and the latest EF 11-24 f/4L ultra wide. All 3 of those lenses are pretty creative.</p>
<p>We hope to hear more soon.</p>

Advice on Canon PRIMES

Hi everyone - just wanted to let you know (after the fantastic advice) that I ended up getting the 5d3 + 24-70mm f/2.8 II USM IS + 70-300mm f/4 - 5.6L IS USM + 16-35mm f2.8 Mark II USM and have travelled extensively with the 1st 2 lenses and handled it fine !

I love the sharpness of the 24-70mm and the 70-300mm has been on my camera ALOT ! Even tho the reach for Africa may have been lacking - but thats OK as I knew that would be the case !

In found in Africa I was taking so many close up people shots, esp of the kids....so cute ! Also as I previously mentioned landscapes and architecture are still on my hot list. Im thinking I now need a prime that helps me with the sharpness in some of these situations.

SO Im now looking at some PRIMES after owning my gear for a year. My range of shooting is so big, but considering that I have some good lenses at certain focal lengths Im not sure what to consider.

35/50/85/100/135 - eeek too much to consider ~ Advice would be great.

EF 50 1.8 STM

I spend a lot of thought into lenses like those, I mean around f/2 sort of apertures.
With the fantastic 2.8 II zooms, I somehow don't feel the need for a prime that is only one stop faster, even if it has good IQ.
So, I decided for myself I would get primes only if they are 1.4 at least, and to not to touch e.g. the 85 f/1.8 or the 35 f/2 or the 135 f/2.
Then again, I don't shoot video, so the STM / IS combination does probably not attract me as it does others.

Did any of you arrive at a different reasoning?

Yongnuo bringing out RT trigger for 580 EX and other legacy flashes!

Well for all those who went on and on about Canon not having a trigger for the RT system that fires your older non RT flashes, it looks like it will be here very soon.

http://flashhavoc.com/yongnuo-yne3-rx-receiver-released/

I have had several Yongnuo products with mixed luck, but this is a unique solutio to some of your problems so I hope it is a good example of theirs.

And if it gives a programmable trigger delay then we will get the Einsteins Hypersyncing!

Broke my 16-35mm f/4L IS

I dropped a lens for the first time ever last weekend, and the lens did not come away unscathed. I dropped my EF 16-35mm f/4L IS lens about a foot onto a metal stool. It bounced off and fell another eight inches onto carpet. It was only 3 weeks old. I put the lens onto a body and everything seemed to work. The images looked fine.

Today I went to use the lens and noticed the zoom ring is stuck. It will only zoom between 24mm and 35mm. I know it needs to go to Canon for repair. I bought a CPS gold membership a week before I dropped the lens, so I should get 20% off the repair. Good timing, I guess.

What do you think is wrong with my lens, and how much do you think it will cost to fix?

An EF-M f/1.2 Lens?

HTML:
<p><strong>*Update*

</strong>It looks like it was the EF 50mm f/1.2L used to film in the video if you go with what On a Hazy Morning <a href="http://www.onahazymorning.com/blog/2015/2/6/canon-x-on-a-hazy-morning" target="_blank">posted on their blog</a>. It was fun to dream wasn’t it?</p>
<blockquote><p>…we’ve tried the 50mm f/1.2 lens on the EOS M3 camera while filming and we were so impressed with the results; super crisp quality with a beautiful and dreamy depth of field. We like that!</p></blockquote>
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6raSxmk3_4c" width="100%" height="380" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>In the above promotional video for the Canon EOS M3, we see what appears to be an EOS M3 shooting a lens that is set at f/1.2. During the entire promotional video, there’s no real mention of shooting with the EF to EF-M adaptor. Are we going to see a fast aperture EF-M lens coming soon?</p>
<p>You can see the f/1.2 setting at 2:21 of the video.</p>
<p>The video is worth a watch, as it shows a lot of the improvements in the EOS M3.</p>
<p><em>thanks X</em></p>

the "new" medium format?

anyone care to speculate on the impact of the 50meg sensor on the medium format market?
The new 5Ds/5Dsr are both less than half of the list for a pentax 645d, a fifth of Leica S and less than a tenth
of some Hasselblad/Leaf/Mamiya offerings. Combined with the wider variety of lens options,
portability and other considerations, do you think this will create a price drop for the "big fellows" or
new announcements of perhaps 75-90 meg image sensors?
