A New xxD DSLR Coming From Canon [CR1]

HTML:
<p>There’s a suggestion at Canon Watch that Canon will introduce a new DSLR between the current EOS 70D and the Rebel T5i and that it will have an “xxD” model name.</p>
<p><strong>CR’s Take

</strong>With <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/01/canon-shows-off-a-new-dslr/" target="_blank">the recent leaks by Canon that show a new entry level DSLR</a> with NFC, a top LCD and scroll wheel, which are all absent on the current Rebels, there could be some truth to this.</p>
<p>I think it’s more likely we’re going to get a “Super Rebel” like the EOS 60D was when it was launched. The successive EOS 70D gained back the build quality and more premium features that the xxD line of cameras had always had, that were missing from the EOS 60D.</p>
<p>If I was a betting man, I think the leaked camera is indeed the T6i and the xxD name will stay with just the EOS 70D.</p>

Long-term 5DIII Test: Afghanistan To Zimbabwe

I bought my Canon 5DIII when it was first released and have since taken it on my travels to 55 countries; from Afghanistan to Somalia, from the streets of Paris to the Berlin wall, from Pripyat, Chernobyl to the Korean DMZ.
In terms of durability, it has performed amazingly well with only minor paint scratches and a frayed strap as the only real signs of it's age and 'mileage'.

Luckily I have not dropped it, but it has been subjected to all kinds of abuse such as the bumpy, corrugated roads and copious amounts of dust in Africa, the extreme heat and humiidty of the middle east, the wet and rain in europe , the high altitudes of the Himalaya's, and the -18C temperatures of the South Korean winter.

Although Canon seem to be lagging behind Nikon in terms of sensor performance, my 5DIII still takes great photo's. In terms of dependability and robustness it has definitely exceeded my expectations and I hope to take it on many more travels to come.

Canon Date codes gone? Why?

I recently purchased a new 70 200 F2.8L USM IS II lens and could not find a date code. When I contacted Canon Professional services I was told that Canon has discontinued putting date codes on lenses. What could possibly be the reason for Canon to omit date codes on their lenses? Also, does anyone know when this practice started? I can see this hurting resale values down the road.

Critique My "Running" Photos?

Here's one of the 300+ pictures I did for a race today. Most are of a similar quality, but this one's my favorite. Conditions were sunny and a bit snowy.
If you get a chance does it look like I could have maybe dropped the Exposure Compensation down 1/3? Good to go or could I have done a bit better?
Thanks.

Canon EF-S 55-25mm IS STM vs EF 200mm 2.8L II

Dear Canonrumors Forum,

I've been spending a great deal of time trying to decide between these two lenses, which on the first look couldn't be more different in their features, but somehow both match the requirements for the usage I intend:

I'm searching for a small(ish) and relative light telephoto of at least 200mm, mainly for still photography, that is black and inconspicuous to the layman's eye while traveling in "adventurous" offbeat areas in eastern Europe, Africa and South America, and photographing musicians and performers during concerts/festivals.

The main gear I currently own:
is a Canon 100D/SL1 camera, which I intend to keep for a few years to come, as well as getting a full frame model of the next generation roster, to be hopefully announced soon this year.

My lenses are the unique Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 Art,
40mm f2.8 Pancake lens, the 100 f2.8L Macro lens and the 70-200mm f2.8 IS II, with a 2x Extender III.

Often I find myself reaching for the 100L Macro, because it's smaller and lighter than the big white drainpipe for longer hikes.
I'm aware there is no 'perfect' lens and I try to be as objective and extensive in listing the following pros and cons:

The EF-S 55-250mm IS STM zoom lens:

+fantastic Image Stabilization
+lightweight
+one of the sharpest and snappiest EF-S lenses, with only a little bit of a quality compromise
+convenient normal and telephoto zoom range, reducing lens swaps, and 250mm beats 200 by a little
+price wise it's hard to beat, also allows smaller and cheaper filters, but there is neither lens hood nor storage pouch included
+the STM motor for a smooth(er) video shooting, not that important to me

=color is black and doesn't look imitating or drawing attention like Canon's white lens elite
= Size wise approx the same as the 200mm prime, retracted a little shorter, when fully extended longer...
=both lenses are handholdable and do not include a tripod collar

-it's Variable and smaller aperture
-the built quality in general is not par L glass standards
-the retracting design is a dust sucker - proven under harsh conditions such as the Coachella Music and Arts festival
-250mm is the longest possible since its incompatible with Canon extenders
-despite being one of the sharpest EFS-lenses, the prime has the edge in quality, plus I guess I'm a bit spoiled with the 70-200 IS II
-it's APSC only and therefore less future proof and incompatible with full frame models

The EF 200mm 2.8L II prime lens:

+sharp, fast aperture and great picture quality that matches the quality of my 70-200 zoom, no quality compromise here!
+strong built quality
+it's not changing its size, hence getting dust and moisture inside the mechanics is less of an issue
+it's full frame compatible
+allows the use if teleconverters, even if a cumbersome hassle to do so sometimes

=it's color is black and doesn't look intimidating or drawing as much attention as Canon's white lens elite, despite the red ring, which insiders are going to recognize, alongside the slightly bell-shaped front element
=size wise approximately the same as the zoom
=both lenses are handholdable and don't include a tripod collar

-lack of IS, especially for such a long focal length on a crop body
-less versatile and having to change lenses more often increases the amount of dust your sensor and lens mount contacts are exposed to to
-heavier than the EF-S zoom
-let's be honest, this lens is a living fossil and compared to modern lenses completley outdated
-it feels like I'm spending more cash on a quality lens that I essentially have in the 70-200 IS II, but this decision here is a compromise rather than a absolute solution
-it's pretty expensive compared to the EF-S model, filter size is larger, ergo more expensive too

After writing this I'm wondering
Am I missing anything?

To me it seems a pretty tough decision.
I have faith in the many smart and experienced minds of this great online community to gather feedback and look forward to an interesting discussion and debate. Would a poll be an applicable additional option?

PS: yes, I have tried out both lenses at a local camera store a few times and it did not help me much either...

Factory Refurbished 6D Distortion?

I had been using a T3i and purchased a factory refurbished 6d through Canon the other day. I'm aware that lenses have a certain amount of distortion and I usually correct that in Lightroom. But with the 6D, I'm using the same lenses as I always do (Canon 50mm 1.4 and Canon 4.0 24 - 105), but it seems to me that there's possibly (I could be missing something) a distortion effect coming from the camera itself. Basically, the lines on the buildings in the two attached photos seem to slant inwards from the sides as you go up the building. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Fast firing units?

I am just looking through my images from the 24 hour event at the weekend and I'm wondering if there is a flash unit that can keep up with the frame rate of a 70D??
Is the Nissin MG8000 a good choice? reason I'm asking is if it can fire on, lets say half power on high speed burst then my images should improve BIG time next year, any input is welcome and thanks in advance. :)

Canon MP-E 65mm - Due an upgrade?

So I'm pretty nuts about macro photography and I've had my eye on the MP-E 65 for a while now and my finger is itching to pull the trigger.

I've been reading reviews and noted this lens is 16 years old! But the only negative I can see regarding this lens, aside from one's personal level of expertise, is softness at 1x on f/2.8

You guys feel this lens is due for an upgrade?

7D mark II : great performer

Hi,

(This is my first post, so please be nice if this is in the wrong place ;) )

I replaced my old Canon EOS 50D with a 7D mark II one month ago. I shoot mainly nature and wildlife. I have spent a lot of time reading reviews during the last year (Dpreview, stevehuff, Dxomark...).
There were various competitors on the list :
- Canon 70D with my old 100-400 (cheap but plastic, weak autofocus),
- Nikon D750 with the new 80-400 (missing the extra reach of a crop body),
- Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the announced 300/4 (lightweight but expensive switch)..

I finally went for the 7DII. After one month of extensive use I can say that I'm fully satisfied.
The autofocus is amazing, the customizable dials are real game changers. It is possible to switch from the center AF point to zone autofocus with one click. I can walk during 2 days with the camera powered on (even when it is freezing cold), it automatically goes to sleep after one minute and wakes up in a milisecond. The viewfinder is so bright that I tend to leave my 10x binoculars at home wen I use the 100-400. Wit a bit of post processing in Lightroom I can use ISO up to 6400 and have a better result than my 50D at ISO 1600.

Here you are a few pictures that I couldn't take before :

It is usable for landscapes too (even though I prefer to use the tiny Ricoh GR for that) :

Speedlight help

Okay guys I have a question for you. I have an assistant who has a 5D Mark II and a 6D. Both cameras when using a speedlight, either the 580 or 430, will not emit the AF focus assist beam. Both flashes work good on my cameras so the flashes are good. And to throw a wrench in everything, when put on the green mode, the AF light comes on, so it must be a setting. I crawled theough his settings and his speedlight custom settings allow for AF assist beam. I don't see anything stopping it. Any suggestions?

7 inch monitor for 5d3?

I am looking to buy a monitor for my 5D3 for shooting video. Needed for focusing mostly. I am shooting indoor performances and am usually at 200-300mm. I would like to buy a monitor to mount beside or on the camera. $300 max price for me. I see some have focus peaking and false colors. All of this is new to me, but they seem to be valuable features. Suggestions on brand and model number? Also, consider batteries. I have the 5D3 and 7D so the LP-6 batteries would be an extra bonus. Thanks!

Lighting modifier recommendations- softboxes, umbrellas, shape, size?

  • Dear all
I need some guidance on deciding on light modifiers, and will greatly appreciate your help. Here is the situation:

    1. I don't have a dedicated studio, and hope to work partly in my apartment, partly in subjects' houses and locations, and plan to shoot portraits and real estate/architecture. This will be strictly a weekends and holidays thing, and mostly for friends and family. So space and budget is limited, but so is the scope.

    2. Regarding lighting gear, I have 3 600EX-RTs, two large Rogue flash benders (one with the diffusion panel) and sets of gels for each flash, a Wafer softbox (30" x 40") and two Manfrotto 1052BAC lights stands that I recently purchased.

    3. I plan to buy the TTL version of the Godox 360 when it comes out (300 Ws, bare bulb)

    4. I am considering buying a couple of modifiers- one large and one small.

    A. For the first, I am considering a PLM- I am thinking soft silver as it is somewhat less specular than the extreme while still producing efficient output. I hope that it will give me controlled but bright light, let me utilize the full power of the Godox and produce round catchlights when I need them.

    >Question is, am I choosing the right surface?
    >If so, should I go for the 51" or the 64"- that is, how many people can the first light- how many the second?
    >Will my Godox 360 be sufficient to light a 64" umbrella?
    >Finally, I am thinking of getting the Elinchrom ring mount for the PLM and the Elinchrom mount Speedlite bracket to fit my Godox and Speedlites. I shall also get an Elinchrom mount for my Wafer. Is it silly to go for this mount even though I don't have an Eli light? The alternative is to go Bowens on the wafer and Speedlite bracket and use the PLM by the shaft (PCB doesn't make Bowens ring mounts).

    b. For the latter, I am thinking of a small flash-mounted softbox. What shape and size should I look for?

    >There are some square Lastolite clones as well as some small and cheap octaboxes (links below)- which will be better?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/24-Portable-60cm-Softbox-Soft-Box-for-Flash-Light-Speedlite-Photo-Speedlight-/390954391191?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5b06b29697

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Octagon-Speedlite-Softbox-Umbrella-Soft-Box-Flash-Light-Diffuser-for-Nikon-Canon-/311245372470?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4877ab7c36

Are there other, better alternatives?

Thanks in advance!

Hot shoe mod for monolights

I recently discovered a way to temporarily modify my Canon hot shoe that allowed my Canon ST-E2 transmitter to fire my Bowens monolights in synch with the Canon flashes. When covering all 4 small connectors on the hot shoe this disabled the Ettl pre flash and the monolights synced perfectly. Problem was the ST-E2 transmitter would time out and wouldn’t awaken with the shutter button, or wireless remote. This proved unacceptable. By trial and error I discovered that covering the ( left rear connector ) as your holding the camera the hot shoe problem was solved.

Wait for 5D4 or go for 5D3/6D right now ?

Hey guys,

My old DSLR body is canon 400D....it's very very out of fashion.

I'm going to take a 2-week trip to Germany in June and I should bring a good and reliable camera with me at then.

Should I wait for 5D4 ?

Actually no one can promise me the release date of 5D4.

So maybe 5D4 would come later than June.

Or just buy 5D3 or 6D right now ?

What really makes me hesitate is the fact that both of 5D3/6D are not new...

Any idea ?

Thank you.

D750 Light Leak Fix

https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19336

To correct this issue, Nikon will inspect and service, at no cost, the camera’s light-shielding components and adjust the AF sensor position.

So let's see...

5D Mk III light leak fix - a little bit of sticky tape.

D750 light leak fix - rearranging some of the camera's most "mission critical" internal hardware..!

Another quality moment brought to you by Nikon.

At least they've admitted to this one before China banned the sale of the camera completely a la the D600...

New Gear Resolutions for 2015

Does anyone else have any New Year's Gear Resolutions for 2015?

I've decided to make up some - I wonder how many I will stick with:

1. I will only buy a new lens if it covers a focal length (or lengths) that I don't already have covered unless it is a upgraded or special lens (i.e. TS-E 45L II)
2. I won't pre-order every new Canon EOS / EF product that is announced (again)
3. I will stop buying new memory cards - I'm starting to exceed my hard drive space with CF & SD cards ;)
4. I will keep using my beat up old aluminum tripod until it dies (or RRS finally has a genuine sale)
5. I will only order a full Lee Filters kit if I can find all of the required components from no more than 3 retailers (wish me luck)
6. I will wait for new camera bodies to go refurb before buying them

What are yours?

Weak Yen Spurs Canon To Bring Production Home

HTML:
<p>Jan 9 (<a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/09/japan-yen-manufacturers-idUSL3N0UO2YB20150109" target="_blank">Reuters</a>) – Canon Inc and other Japanese electronics companies want to bring production of some goods back home, reversing a years-old trend of overseas manufacturing as a rapid decline in the value of the yen makes local goods more competitive.</p>
<p>The yen has tumbled some 8 percent since the Bank of <a class="vglnk" href="http://bit.ly/1svQNRI" rel="nofollow">Japan</a> last eased monetary policy in October and is now trading near seven-year lows. Since late 2012, it has lost a third of its value due to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s reflationary economic policies.</p>
<p>The steep slide has raised costs for firms highly dependent on raw material imports as well as those that manufacture abroad.</p>
<p>Now, Canon says it wants domestic production to return to 60 percent of overall output in three years, up from around 40 percent. “From now on, new copier, camera and printer products will be built at domestic factories and as they replace older products, the volume of goods made overseas will fall,” said company spokesman Hirotomo Fujimori.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Sharp Corp is also looking at lifting the ratio of LCD televisions and refrigerators made in Japan to counter the yen’s weakness, a spokesman said.</p>
<p>Panasonic Corp has been considering whether to lift domestic production levels for some time. Its white goods division sees a 1.8 billion yen drop in operating income every time the dollar strengthens by one yen, because this division largely produces its goods overseas and sells them in Japan.</p>
<p>No companies, however, have yet to go so far as saying that yen weakness is a big enough factor to justify the large investment needed for new domestic plants or assembly lines.</p>
<p>“Most white goods sold in Japan are imported from <a class="vglnk" href="http://bit.ly/1stXs9q" rel="nofollow">China</a> so it’s natural we could see more goods manufactured in Japan on the back of a weaker yen,” Panasonic CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.</p>
<p>“But it’s more of a passive rather than a proactive shift,” he added. Preparing for the switch

Greetings!
I decided to switch to Canon from Nikon. There are many reasons behind the decision, but mostly: the lenses and the slower update cycle.

I like to shoot everything. Sometimes i feel like I'm going out and photographing birds in the park, sometimes i'm just in a mood for landscapes. To me the photography is a pleasure and a therapy, and more reasons to go out.

I'm going to buy two bodies: a fast shooter and one for general purposes.
7D mark II and 5D mark IV(when it's available).

For the lenses:
16-35mm f/4L
24-70 f/2.8L II or 24-70 f/4L
70-200 f/2.8L II
100-400 ver.II

As you can see, I can't decide between 24-70s. I'm going to shoot with it handheld.
Reading reviews and watching samples didn't help me, just gave me a headache. And unfortunately, I can't test them side by side because the store has only the f/2.8 model in stock.
In theory, f/2.8 should compensate for the IS on the f/4 with a faster shutter speed but I'm not sure if that's the case in real situation. And then there is the glass quality - the f/2.8 should produce sharper images, but again, in theory.
So I'd highly appreciate an advice from someone who has had experience with both lenses in real world.

Cheers!

CR Admins: New Ad Block on CR Home Page needs to be REMOVED!

EDIT: I discovered that my AdBlocker was the reason. With it enabled, I see the Discussion List on top like I prefer. I disabled it temporarily and forgot so the AdBlock appeared on the top instead. Yuck. But I guess it's been that way for a while. Too bad. :(

Yesterday, a large "AdChoice" Ad Block on CR Home Page was apparently added to take the place of / push down the trending Forum Discussion List on the right side. WTH?? ??? There was already an Ad Block below the Forum Thread List. Why do we need one on the top as well?

CR Admins: Please move the Forum Discussion List back up top right where it was! It sucks having to scroll down to see it every time I check the home page for new topics. I'm not trying to whine here, this is a real issue. I don't mind tolerating the Ad Blocks as long as they don't affect functionality. This one does!

IMHO, if this change is permanent, it will significantly reduce your traffic because checking for new forum topics will not be as quick or easy and folks will be less inclined to go to the extra scrolling effort. When the Forum Discussion List is where it was before at the top, you simply needed to refresh the page. Now it's hidden completely without scrolling down. Yuck!!
