24-105L Lens and 5D3: New vs. Old - Think there is any difference?

So I purchased the 5D3 + 24-105L Kit for $2699 to sell for a little extra cash. But since I already own both, I also thought it might be a good chance to refresh what I have with new and sell my used ones instead. You know, sort of 'reset the clock' so to speak and have all new again for practically no cost. But we all know what it's like to have something that is familiar/works fine and then replace it with a shiny new one only to find out we wish we had the first one back because the replacement has lower quality or issues that we didn't expect.

Question: I have owned a 24-105L for about 4 years. Anyone think that the newest ones coming off the line now might be any better or worse? Subtle changes good or bad that have crept into the manufacturing process either by accident or on purpose? Anyone ever notice a difference that has used an older one and a newer one? (Roger Cicala, are you listening?) I realize the lens is built to a specific design but I'm just curious if the manufacturing process has perhaps influenced the quality over the years with perhaps a newer/different factory, assembly line, better or worse QA tolerances, etc.

While we're at it, ditto I guess for the 5D3. Hopefully you guys don't think this is stupid question. Thanks.

buying suggestion: a 5D3 or 1Dx?

Hi guys, I've asked for recommendations/opinions on various gear purchases from fellow users here and have always gotten great real-world advice. Here I am again with a buy question:

My old 1Ds3 is dying after serving me well for many years. I do mostly event coverage (weddings, graduations, conferences... generally "people doing stuff") that do NOT involve high-speed athletes or motor vehicles. All I really need is excellent low-light performance and good-to-great AF. Online research seems to indicate that the 5D3 can produce just as good an image as the flagship 1Dx under the same conditions. I don't need 14fps, I don't need extreme weather sealing, I don't need the 1Dx's extra AF speed. Does that mean the 5D3 is the right choice for me? Can anyone who own or have used both bodies offer a reason why a 1Dx would still be worth twice the $$$?

For the record, money is not an issue. I just don't want to spend twice as much for the 1Dx if I can achieve the same results with a 5D3 (the money saved can go to a new lens!). Thanks guys!

Why is poverty so photogenic?

Friends, On the pavement (sidewalk) in Bangalore earlier in the week, I became intrigued by a group of children. They had a few rubber stamps with graphics on them and would use them, with rubber stamp ink, to 'tattoo' customers using an engraving tool. There were no takers for the hour or so I hung around. Then one of the kids moved and I thought I saw that his buttocks were revealed through his tattered trousers. I wanted to take the boy there and then to the nearest shop and get him outfitted.

Incidentally, the starting prices for homes, less than 30 metres away, in that neighbourhood, Jayanagar, is USD 1 million.

What makes us attracted to the poor and wretched? Obviously, like me you have all seen worse cases of penury, but the appeal is still something very powerful and we are ready with our gear to capture the scene.

What 2nd bokeh lens for wedding?

Hi, I got 6D with 24-70 f4L. I also got 70D body. What lens should I get?

I have shot 3 weddings in total. For just capturing the event and group shots. 24-70 is superb IQ already for me.
Together with 430ex ii and graslon dome diffuser.

But when taking portrait of bride. I don't have the right lens. I use the 270ex ii on the 70D with diffuser.
I don't have much experience on wedding scenario so I couldn't decide what lens is best.
. 70-200 f4L IS
. 50 f1.2L
. 35 f1.4L

For my 70D.

Should I switch?? 24-70L/2.8-II + 16-35L/2.8-I vs. 24-70L/4IS + 16-35L/4IS

Basically, this is a question of whether or not to switch from f/2.8 to f/4 on these lenses. And gain IS and fancy Macro with the 24-70 f/4 IS in the process.

I own the 24-70 f/2.8 vII and the older 16-35 f/2.8 vI (One of my favorite lenses.)
(BTW, I also own (as a side note) the 24-105 f/4 IS if it matters.)

I also now own a 24-70 f/4 IS and I'm about to own a 16-35 f/4 IS. (Both purchased a great discounts to sell at a profit.)

I was considering selling my 24-70 f/2.8 vII since it's worth so much in comparison. And I have read a lot of good reviews on the 16-35 f/4 lens. (And honestly, I'm getting tired of waiting for a new version of the 16-35 f/2.8 lens.)

So what do you guys think I'll regret in losing the f/2.8 versions other than a stop of light and some loss of bokeh? I know the 24-70 f/2.8 vII is a dynamite lens but even in low light the f/4 should work pretty well on my 5D3, 6D or 7D-II. Esp with IS. Right?? I'm just wondering going forward in 2015 and beyond if I will care about 2.8 or not as the sensor tech continues to improve.

Yes, I do indoor shooting. No, I don't do much portrait work. Mostly event photography and low to normal ambient event stuff. Think wedding reception as a reference even though I don't do wedding receptions per se. I also have a EF 28/1.8 for dark campfire shots, etc.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Regrets?

Review: Sensor Performance of the 7D Mark II

HTML:
<p>Roger Clark has done a very extensive and technical review of the sensor performance of the Canon EOS 7D Mark II and how it relates to the original 7D, astrophotography and general photography needs.</p>
<p>This review is well worth the read.</p>
<p><strong>From the review…

</strong><em>“The data shown here for the Canon 7D Mark II indicate that the camera is operating at near perfect levels for the sensor with lower apparent read noise and impressively low pattern noise compared to all other current Canon cameras tested and better than that in the 7D Mark I. This means that for high signals, noise is dominated by photon statistics. Sensitivity is improved 14% over the 7D Mark 1, and the sensitivity per square micron is the highest that I have measured for any Canon camera to date.</em></p>
<p><em>The approximately 10x lower thermal dark current is a <b>game changing</b> factor, making this camera the top Canon camera for long exposure low light photography that I have tested. The superb autofocus system, comparable to Canon 1D series pro cameras with 65 autofocus points is another <b>game changing</b> innovation, as the camera is at a price point that is affordable to more people.”</em></p>

What is your favorite lens/camera combo in your camerabag?

Last week I've bought the f-stop Tilopa backpack.
Ideal when I want all my gear with me.
But, there will be enough situations that I only need the 70-200 and the 24-70. That's why I want to buy another smaller bag, the Billingham 5-serie (225 or 335).
That also means that this bag isn't deep enough to hold the body (mark5dIII) and 70-200mm as a combo.
What do you think? Buy a "deeper" bag like the Think Tank which I not really like or make another combo like the mark5dIII with the 24-70 and keep the 70-200 on its own in the same bag?
What is your combo in your bag?

Yes, Dear Friends.
I am low tech guy, But I love to do/ Think/ Invent, to do some thing Good = Get Better.

With Velcro, and the Lens's Envelope ( Of Better Beamer), to use ad the front Lens cover when I walk around, And do not let the concentrated heat of sun shine, Burn my High Cost Flash.
= Bingo, Yes, I can use this modified Better Beamer for 250-300 Feet of the bird by 600 mm + 2X + 1.6 Lens Factor of 7D and 7D MK II Cameras.
Enjoy.

Sony to capture all the non-Canon sensor sales

I have just read this interesting article:

http://www.dslrbodies.com/newsviews/more-doom-and-gloom.html

where Thom Hogan analyzes the latest Sony’s financial presentation and he concludes that:

I’m sure that Sony fanboys reading the chart might notice and jump up and down about one aspect: near 100% market share in Compact DSC sensor sales. Heck, if you do the math properly, they’re also projecting near 100% capture of the non-Canon ILC market, too.

That is, if it were not for Canon, all the sensors would be manufactured by Sony, that would get a monopoly in imaging sensors...

My interpretation of this is: Nikon users should be very grateful to Canon for not buying APS-C/FF sensors to Canon. If Canon bought Sony sensors too, Sony could charge whatever they wanted for their sensors!!!

C.Fn IV-5 on 1DX

Hi guys -

I hope you can help.

I have been using a 1D4 for the last few years to photograph wildlife mostly in Av mode. Therefore, I am accustomed to adjusting my main parameter (Aperture) with the wheel on the top of the camera.

I also use Manual mode on 1D4 regularly and found C.Fn IV-5 on the 1D4 which allowed me to switch the function of the wheel on top with the wheel on the back......so that now the top wheel adjusted Aperture in M mode, just like it does in Av mode.

I recently bought a 1DX and I don't seem to be able to find a function to switch the wheels' functions on that camera. Does anyone know if it is possible, or if they have left it out this time around (perhaps because I am the only person on the planet who uses it?!)?

Many thanks.

Dear Friends.
This Sunday morning, I just grab my New 7D MK II and EF 600 MM, L with 2X Extension to shoot the Birds and Ducks at DUKE Garden, at Duke University Campus, Durham, NC., USA. Distant of the birds from the camera = 250-350 feet.
Here are some of the Photos.
Enjoy.

Please help me! 1DX Fever, (G.A.S.)

Hi Folks.

Please help me, I went to the LCE Southampton show and I did not follow the advice previously given on this forum, I picked up the 1DX, held it, tried it, and I now find I am in desperate need of the antidote for trying a 1DX! I fear that not being able to afford one is only part of the antidote! :'( Damn that thing feels good with a big white on it.
Should have stopped after trying the 5DIII! ;D

Cheers, Graham.

Suggested settings for a newb shooting without a light meter?

I am using a 5DM3 and a 24-70mm for portrait style photos in a room where I blocked all natural light, and am using a video light KNO FLO Diva with an attached flozier for diffusion http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/656786-REG/Kino_Flo_DIV_401_120_Diva_Lite_401_Fixture.html and a white reflector as the fill. I am very new to photography and lighting, and do not have a light meter. Can anyone give me a ball park idea of where they think my settings should be? My last photoshoot test was shot in AV with F6.3, ISO 500, exposure +1 The lighting in the photos came out decent, though far from what any of your would consider good.

Thanks for any suggestions.

CR2s not showing up as thumbnails on my Win 8.1 laptop

Hi!

So I got the 7D2 and thought that the raw file being CR2, would show up because my CR2 from the 5D3 shows the thumbnail - and double-clicking the 5D3 file displays it.

Apparently the software gods at Canon thought otherwise...

Trust me, I Googled and downloaded three installers from Microsoft that swore that they would solve my problem. But they did not so I turn to you folks. What magic did you do to solve this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Community thoughts on Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens

I have been shooting Canon for about 40 years. About three years ago I finally got into digital with the 7D. Less than a year ago I bought the 5D3. Great cameras! I have a nice variety of primes and zooms (all Canon) and it is always nice to have something super-wide. I bought the Rokinon 8mm for the 7D and was very happy with that lens! Since I am shooting moistly FF now, I decided to sell the 8mm and buy a mint Canon 15mm on eBay. It is the highest S/N that I saw and is quite mint. I have to say that I am just a bit disappointed with the lens. The Roki had a really nice snap and contrast to it that I am not seeing in the Canon. I used the Roki on the 7D and the Canon 15mm on the 5D3 doing very similar shots, at night games, in our SF Giants ballpark. I believe the coverage is about the same. I sold the Roki to make room in my wallet for the Canon. Seriously, the photos are fine until you go pixel peeping. There is a lot of CA and they just do not have the contrast, color rendition or feel of the Roki. Is anyone out there using the Canon fisheye? Do you feel that it is sharp? I think I shot mostly at f5.6 since it was night and at pretty high ISO's (never an issue with Canon, IMHO). The physical size and all is really perfect. It works out to about a 24mm when on the 7D body, which is nice. In the wide range I have the 24-70 f4 and the 28mm f1.8 prime. I am just curious to hear from other users about their thoughts about the quality of this lens. Is it worth sending in to Canon to have it evaluated? Nothing seems to be wrong with it, but it simply does not seem to live up to the quality standards that I expect from Canon. Thanks so much!

600EX-RT sticks and puts out constant light

I have had my 600EX-RT for about a year with no issues. Last night I was using it in a nightclub on very low power for just a touch of flash fill. On three occasions in a period of about five minutes it just stuck on and looked like a bright movie light. It turned off on it's own, but did it three times in a row. Not real great in a very dim nightclub! I had a diffuser on it and it was glowing like a very bright nightstick. I was able to cover it with my hands to avoid further distractions to the audience. It was mounted on the hot shoe of my 5D3 at the time. Has anyone had this happen to them? I assume I should just send it to Canon, but it was fine for the last hour after that. Any thoughts? Thanks so much. this is my first post here. Craig

What distance to be at for AFMA

Does anybody know at what distance or approximately the distance I should be at to AFMA, I'll be using the Canon 400 f/5.6L with the 7D Mark ll?

Overall I'm happy with the photos i'm getting and love the lens/camera combination but there are times when i'll get say, a run of a pelican and 1 or 2 out of 5-7 shots will be tack sharp the other's will be soft. It's not really a big deal for me as I get more keepers then throw aways most of the time but figured I'd give AFMA a try and see how much if any adjustment I may need. :)
