7DII w/300+1.4 vs 5DIII w/300+2.0 comparison

Hi all,

I mentioned this prior to the release of the 7DII but does anybody have any site that will show me a comparison between the 7DII and 5DIII using a 300mm on both but with a 1.4x conveter on the 7DII and a 2x converter on the 5D?

My thinking is that the increased AF and IQ using just a 1.4x may just about offset the 5DIIIs FF advantages, particularly in my often reach-limited situations.

Lens as a gift. Non Photographer buying... :)

Hi,

I want to buy my wife a new lens - if you all think she needs it. Her gear is:
Canon Eos Rebel Crop (fairly old - about 6 years)

Lenses:
Canon 70-300 4-5.6
Tokina 11-16 2.8
Tamron 28-75 2.8
Sigma 18-35 1.8

She is wanting a mid-zoom faster lens. I'm thinking about the 135 2.0 or the 85 1.8
She shoots landscapes, portraits, animals, etc. General stuff.

I'd appreciate your collective advice.

Thank you!
Sean

Is a 16-35 update coming soon?

I'm new here, so I apologize in advance if I'm breaking forum propriety.

I'm about to buy a 16-35 2.8 ii but I know the lens hasn't been updated since 2007. Do you think it is worth waiting for an updated version to make the purchase? It would be a shame to lose out on IS, a sleeker body, etc. if an update is right around the corner.

Thanks for the advice.

Two full frame bodies or full frame and crop sensor?

Hi,
I currently shoot a 5diii. This year I started shooting my first paid shoots. I did 4 weddings, senior pictures and family portriats. I'll be doing the same over the next several years plus some sports, stock, wildlife and landscapes/fine art trying to make a career from photography. I enjoy doing weddings, portriats and really all types of photography. However my favorite is travel, wildlife and landscapes. So my question is I'm going to get a second body to shoot in case the 5diii fails or I want to use 2 bodies so I'm not switching lenses as much and I'm not sure if I should go with the 7dii or save for a second 5diii or possibly a high mp body hopefully released in the future. I love the 5diii it's just extremely spendy for a second one while I'm starting out and on a budget. I thought about the 6d but I really like having 2 card slots in case of a memory card failure and I prefer the layout of the 5diii more. I thought the 7dii would be nice for some extra reach but I'm not sure how it'd do shooting weddings and portriats compared to the 5diii. Also having a 24-70 on the ff and the 70-200 on the crop sensor might not be great for weddings in low light and loosing depth of field. So any advice and thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks you.

Another 50mp FF DSLR Mention [CR2]

HTML:
<p>The world continues to wait for Canon to jump back into the resolution race, and it looks like they will be in 2015 (though we have previously said they would in 2014). A few new mentions of a 50mp camera coming in the first half of 2015 to which there will be 2 variants. One with a low pass filter, and another without. I’m not sure Canon would get into 2 SKUs for one camera body, though they have done it for astronomy camera purposes. The camera will not be an EOS-1 style camera and would be a new camera above the 5D line. You’re free to call it the “3D”, but I’ve never been a fan of that name simply because it could be confusing to consumers.</p>
<p>Things are getting a little bit muddled with 5D Mark IV talk and Cinema EOS talk (lots of 4K products coming) and I suspect things are getting pretty fragmented. We currently have nothing reliable to report as far as a 5D Mark III replacement is concerned. I also have nothing to report about an EOS-1D X Mark II, which is something that is sure to be addressed over the next 12 months.</p>
<p>I suspect we’re going to see a new Rebel in the first quarter of 2015, and that will probably be Canon’s next DSLR. The EOS M should come before the Rebel and it could be as soon as December.</p>

Help me decide: should I buy an EF 135L

Hi,

just stumbled upon a special offer for an EF 135L (brand new) for ~710€. Regular price in my country is 900€.
I know that it is a great lens, so I am really tempted. But do I need it?

I have a 7D with a number of lenses, at least three of which would really be competing for a space in the bag with the EF 135L: 70-200 f4 IS, EF 85 1.8, and the EF 100L 2.8 Macro.

I am afraid that the 135mm FL will be a bit too long for interior shots on APS-C (I find the 100L Macro too long most of the times...)

So is it justifiable to add this lens?
Opinions?

Pocket Wizard PlusX and 600ex-rt

If anyone could please advice me on this.

I set up a shoot in my home studio with a Mamiya RZ67 Pro ii, PW PlusX and 600's. (I hoped for a long time that I would be able to use my st-e3, but alas...). I was adviced to buy the PW PlusX and they worked well.

My set up was the following: Three 600ex-rt's in a 70x70cm softbox, and a separate 600 (fill light) in a small octashaped softbox. The speedlights were in manual slave, hooked to the PW PlusX. All worked well as far as shooting, and manually decreasing the power. I triggered and read the lights with the Sekonic 758Cine with the PW chip. The one thing that did not work, and I am seeking advice about here is the sleep modus kicking in on the speedlights. Posing the models, finding the correct focus is a bit cumberstone on the Mamiya, so it took time, so the speedlights stopped working/responding, and I had to walk over and push the fire button to wake them up, then step up, check focus and shoot. Is it a way I can prevent them from going in this sleep function? I do not care if that eats away on the batteries, but it would be really nice to be able to focus on the shooting of pictures, rather than running back and forth to be sure that the flashes are ready to shoot..

7DMKII Focus keeper rate ideas?

Hi,
I have a 7D MKII. Let me just start with the fact that I understand that no AF is perfect. I also understand that f1.4. 2.8etc have a very small DOF

I've found that shooting one shot mode at a piece of typewritten paper in direct sunlight 50mm f1.4 I can expect maybe 7 or 8 out of 10 in focus at 100% (admittedly the 50mm 1.4 isn't razor sharp at that aperture) Is this to be expected? When viewed on a 28" 4K display other shots look fine until I get to about a 5CM of the display, and notice the focus is a bit off. Even with my 24-70 (Mark I) at 2.8 its maybe 70-90% spot on. Of course I didn't record my findings, just a casual chimp at the images and review on the screen.

Is it normal to think that at casual print sizes, maybe even upto 13X19, the oneshot AF is OK, but if I want to pixel peep or print bigger I'm better off MF with live view?

I went to the trouble of doing the test after I found it extremely difficult to get the iris/pupil in focus consistently. In fact with my kids I seem to get better results with AI Servo. Any tips there?

Howabout sports/action with a 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM II. Any idea on the keeper rate there? A number for me to strive to? I took it out the other day to the kids sports day and in AI Servo atleast 80% were great. Is that something to be proud/worried about??

Capturing Still from Video, best practice?

Hi, I know that it is possible to save one frame of video to make it one still photo.

What is the best video recording settings for this to have good IQ for the resulting still photo? Higher Frame Rate? All i or ipb good enough?

Is taking frame from video to make photo "normally done" and good enough for alternative shots for a given event aside from the still camera?

Thanks.

Switching to Full Frame

Ok, so I've been shooting a 7D since May of 2012, and it's come to the point where I'm ready to upgrade my camera. I've been shooting semi professionally and am looking to shoot full time by next summer.

I currently have a 7D, 10-22, 28 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8, and 24-70 f/2.8 L mk. 1.

I do not like the 24-70. The sharpness, AF speed and light transmission at 70mm is simply not the quality of a 1,000 dollar lens.

With a Full Frame jump I will also be getting rid of the 10-22.

So this leaves me with about 700 bucks worth of canon glass.

I'm looking to upgrade the 7d - the 6d is not an upgrade in terms of AF points, AF speed, Buffer depth - the only logical step up is the 5d mk. III.

However, the Nikon D750 sells at 1,000$ cheaper than the 5d mk. iii - Same AF points - similar AF speed - Better ISO performance and DR - just looking at the samples i've seen online. The D750 is 2 years newer, it's going to be better.

Basically, for you 5d iii shooters - is there anything in the 5d iii that makes it 1,000 dollars better than the d750?

Why should I stay with Canon / not switch to Nikon?

DR of Nikon vs Canon Article

I'm not sure if this article has been discussed before, but I found it while trying to better understand whether the DxOMark tests are as flawed as folks on this forum claim. I found it odd a few weeks ago how on this forum members were proud of the DxOMark G7X results (it was even boasted on the front CR page) when it seems like DxOMark is constantly criticized as using flawed methodology. It made me want to learn more about the DR issue in general - as well as DxOMark results in general.

This article claims to validate the DxOMark results. The issue with this article that strikes me though, is why would you need to radically underexpose or radically overexpose a shot and then try to recover it later? Why not just properly expose it to begin with? Isn't it best to try to pretend that Photoshop and Lightroom don't exist and to get it right when you take the shot?

Here's the article:

https://photographylife.com/nikon-vs-canon-dynamic-range

I'm not advocating one way or another btw - so please don't misunderstand this as me criticizing Canon OR Nikon. I'm just passing this article along that I found interesting, but odd.

EDIT: I just noticed that this site has only reviewed 3 Canon cameras, whereas it has reviewed 20 Nikon cameras. Similarly, it's reviewed 37 Nikon lenses and not a single Canon lens. That would seem to suggest a bit of bias I think.

Godox AD180 / 360 rebranding

I am planning to buy a Godox bare bulb flash for Christmas and I know that it has been rebranded under a few different brands. Is there any difference between them? I don't mean the flash itself, but repairs, warranty, anything? I live in the US, if that makes a difference.

On a different note, does anybody know how the recycle time of the 360 at half power compares with the recycle time of the 180 in full power?

Heat from a speed light ...

The first topic I started!
It is about the heat created just in front of the speed light.
Tonight, while testing my 600EX with ST-E3, I laid down the flash head on a seat so the light produced will not disturb the guests at the wedding party. A second similar test using my black pants to shield the light cause a burning sensation on my leg. I looked at my pants and found a burnt mark where the flash head laid. I went back to the seat and found another burnt mark!
Please be aware that the flash produces enough heat to burn fabrics.
Photo of the burnt mark on pants.

ISO TESTING, BY STUPID METHODS

Dear Friends.
I am not high tech guy, and very minimum knowledge of camera technique.
Yes, This Afternoon, I just try to use the ISO, start from 100, up to 25,600 at my usual bird shots = under the tree, in the day time.
Sorry, Too cold temperature, and No Birds around my home, I just use the model Bird = 6 inches tall, 150 feet distant from my camera, 7D MK II, EF 600 mm. L IS with Canon 2X MK II, On heavy Tripods. ( Adjust Back Focus at - 7). One spot AF at the head of Bird, and Spot meter.

Shoot with Self timmer.
Here are the Result. Ha, Ha, Ha---My old poor eyes only see the minor difference, Sorry

No, No flash use on this album, No post Processing, just put the notes, and reduce the size.
