Black Rapid Backpack Strap

I just got back from two hiking adventures... of course the "gear" went with. The first was a week of hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, and the second was a long weekend of hiking along Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior along the Superior Hiking Trail and some of it's spur trails which lead to waterfalls etc.

I used my BR sport strap exclusively on both trips.

I just saw this --> http://www.blackrapid.com/products/backpack-strap <--
advertised on BR's website and am wondering if anyone has seen it in person or possibly used one? I think they're very new (released 9/15/14???) so I understand if nobody has seen one, but hoping someone has seen one at a trade show or possibly had a chance to preview one etc. Anyone??? anyone??

It seems like if it works the way it shows, it would be ideal for my type of adventuring! It would allow some great flexibility for carrying either a DSLR backpack or for my use - probably a hydration/food/camping pack while still allowing all of the flexibility of a sling strap.

Eos6D at 25000iso...image quality reality check!

With the launch of the 7d2 most of us have been somewhat disappointed that our beloved brand Canon didn't introduce a higher megapixel sensor to rival that of the competition.....but you know what we have right now still works pretty well...

I have the cheaper 6D that I use daily for my professional work and also for my private photography. This cameras high iso quality has just blown me over. Of course I have not compared it to the competition but the image quality of this camera has never let me down professionally. Personally I would like a few more pixels at 100 iso.

Enclosed a 25000 iso shot of my daughters school play. First image as it appears in LR without any tweaking also a 100% crop of the same image to show noise etc. the first two images are at LR default settings which include some sharpening.

Last image is after Raw processing via DXO optics pro 9 using the 'prime noise reduction tool' and then in LR I added a bit of 'grain' afterwards to my own taste. No sharpening for the DXO image. for me a high iso image shouldnt be devoid of noise, hence the added grain which also helps to improve the 'look' of sharpness. Actually sharpening the image didn't really improve it much so I left it as is - something I have noticed before with high iso images...

What I see here is that I could open the shadows quite a bit (contrary to conventional wisdom)and also that there was still quite a lot of detail left in the highlights. Also that the noise reduction software is really very very good and that its just really a matter of taste how much more or less one wants to reduce the noise. I have made quite large prints, A3 to A2, of these 25000 iso images and the image quality is just superb! Of course one cant use 25ooo iso images on every subject matter but with lighting conditions like in the sample image here it works just well!

I am not saying its the best or better than Nikon, Sony, Fuji etc...I really couldn't care, just that its pretty good for my requirements and in fact, for an old timer like me that grew up with film and large view cameras ...I just cant believe how good and easy we have it today!

These images are not an illustration of absolute image quality but just to show how good our existing technology is and what can be achieved with a few tweaks in software...

More of my high iso images can be seen here: http://thelazytravelphotographer.blogspot.com/2014/03/eos-6d-review-part-3-homage-to-tri-x.html

Rfp (request for pictures): remote wifi wildlife shots

Now I've got this high-tech 6d with wifi, but I don't use it because I can just put the sd card into my laptop. But there's this other use Canon actually propagates for wifi: remote wildlife shooting. But how practical is this approach in reality w/o the ability to re-frame the shot?

I'd be delighted if some people would post their results from wifi wildlife shots, no matter how terrific the result, to lend some inspiration to others. The camera to use would be 6d, 70d or any other model with wifi addon that enables remote shooting

Thanks for any samples (or links if I missed them)!

Canon Says Higher Resolution Sensors Are Coming Soon

HTML:
<p>DPReview has posted their interview with Masaya Maeda, the Managing Director and Chief Executive, Image Communication Products Operations at Canon. Mr Maeda touches on a lot of subjects, like the EOS 7D Mark II and why it took so long to hit the market. As well as higher megapixel sensors, mirrorless cameras and the fact that the Canon PowerShot G7 X doesn’t use a Canon sensor (It’s most likely from Sony).</p>
<p>Below is a snippet from the interview.</p>
<p><strong>Currently no Canon camera offers more than 22MP. Do your DSLR customers ask for higher resolution? </strong>

<em>Maeda: Yes. We know that many of our customers need more resolution and this is under consideration. In the very near future you can expect us to show something in terms of mirrorless and also a higher resolution sensor.</em></p>

Pocketwizard and 600 ex-rt on camera and off camera

My gear is as follows

60d
600-ex-rt
off camera is neewer 560 that was a cheap flash.
two pocketwizards and pc sync cords
lightstand.

My dilemma is
I tested out the flashes and they work fine alone. I attached the pc sync cord with pocketwizards to the 600ex-rt(on camera) and the (off camera) neewer. both pocketwizards are in receiver and transceiver mode. When I press test both of them do go off. However I'm kinda stumped when I press the shutter on the camera the 600 only goes off. I googled for help but it doesn't lead me anywhere. Also another 600 is definitely out of the question being that they are pretty pricey. Is their something in the settings on the 600 am I missing? Do I need to be on manual and not ettl?

What happens to all those returned Sigma lenses?

I'm considering a Sigma Art lens and doing a lot of online research. One thing that shows up a lot are reports of photographers sending back a lens to exchange for another that will hopefully focus better. Sometimes there are three or four exchanges before they either give up or get a lens they are happy with.

You guys know that already, but what I'd like to know is what happens to all those returned lenses? Does Sigma have a place where they sell refurbished lenses? Do they destroy them as a tax write-off? Disassemble them and re-use the parts to make new lenses?

Just curious!

Canon 16-35 F4 Review vs. 17-40 Shootout

Hey guys,

As an amateur landscape photographer I was excited to get my hands on one of the first copies of the 16-35 F4. I've been collecting image results ever since, and I recently wrote a Canon 16-35 F4 Review and uploaded 35.7GB of images captured with the 16-35 F4, mainly landscape and travel photographs, with quite a few optical performance tests side-by-side's with the 17-40.

1. Start by downloading this RAW file and applying Auto Tone in Lightroom (Command + U), zoom in 100%: https://app.box.com/shared/static/grhe17w7q5varoulpsln.arw (35MB)
2. Click here to read the full review: http://www.grahamclarkphoto.com/canon-16-35mm-f4-review-hands-on-shootout-17-40/

As a Nikon 14-24 and Canon 17-40 shooter I like that this lens has IS, but if there was a non-IS version I'd get that one. It has less CA than both the 14-24 and the 17-40, based on my copies. It's also sharper than both at the corners, but performs similar on center sharpness. Interestingly enough the 17-40 actually resolved sharper on center sharpness on some of my tests, but performed softer on corners on about 75% of the images. CA performance on the 16-35 F4 outpaces both of these lenses by a wide margin.

A majority of the photographs I shot on the Sony A7R and my 5D3/6D. On the A7R the files are coming out incredibly clean and sharp. If Canon is ramping their lineup for high-resolution mirrorless sensors this lens proves they are ready for that future lineup today.

The Good
  • Critically sharp throughout the frame
  • Outstanding CA performance - best on any wide-angle zoom I've used
  • Great weather-sealing, same as other L-lenses I own
  • Great AF - again, same as my other USM lenses
  • 2 to 3-stops of real-world IS is useful, and I can see the usefulness for travel and landscape without a tripod - higher F-numbers and lower ISOs with IS than otherwise possible
  • Larger and smoother focusing ring than 17-40 - higher threshold for IN FOCUS and OUT OF FOCUS making it faster
  • I'm a complete amateur at video too, but in my video tests the IS performed very well, less jittery. Great for handing off to post-processing IS as found in FCPX and other apps
  • Uses 77mm thread size

The Bad
  • Physically larger than 17-40
  • Inclusion of IS makes it noticeably heavier than the 17-40
  • 1 to 2-stops of light falloff inherent without any UV filter at all. Filters with a frame thickness of 4mm or higher add 1-stop of light falloff, filters with 6mm+ add 2.
  • Lens hood extends beyond end of lens when on backwards, so can't use it on conjunction with GND holder like the 17-40. Small thing, but I liked doing this to protect the focusing ring from elements

There's very slight CA on the distant ridge lines, but it's consistently well controlled and is much less pronounced than my 14-24 and 17-40

Sharpness detail is excellent on this lens, similar to my 17-40 on center subjects, but with much less CA

Even on corners this thing performs very well, both in terms of sharpness and CA

400 f/2.8L II IS on sunny days and white jerseys

Has anyone noticed a decrease in AF accuracy on bright sunny days where your team is wearing white jerseys. I am often disappointed in the keeper rate in these situations where the camera/lens seems to focus nowhere in particular even though it says you've locked on the player. I noticed it seems to be worse with the 400 than with the 300 I used to own. Does the bright white fool the AF system? Just wondering if anyone else had some of these troubles over time. Sunday the soccer game was at 1pm and it was particularly bad. I post an example: 1st frame shows the blurry jersey and face, 2nd is better. 3rd frame I can't figure out but the "brightness" made the AF jumpy I recall. I didn't keep any of these for submission obviously.

Thanks!

Pre-order On Canon 7DII

This is probably the wrong place for this but I couldn't find a better sub-forum. My apologies but some folks might want this information.

I pre-ordered the Canon 7DII a few days ago with the understanding that it would not be charged against my PayPal Credit account until shipped. Checking my accounts, as I do from time to time, I found in had been charged already. A little research has shown me that if you pre-order from B&H using the "Bill Me Later" (previous name for PayPal Credit) it is immediately billed. I don't believe this is true using other forms of credit.

I choose the Bill Me Later option, even though I have the cash on hand, for the six months-no interest. Rather leave the cash in my account than theirs. I sent an email, using the B&H form, and just got a reply that since they were closed for Rosh Hashanah I should resubmit the problem on Sunday 9/28. I think it is admirable that they close for the religious holiday but one would think they could keep the email until they reopen.

EF 24-70mm

Hi,
I have the F2.8L version 1 for the last several years and it has served well. I think it's time to move on. Wanted to see opinions about going for the Version 2, F4 version and why? I want to stick to Canon. The F2.8 II is quite pricey at $2099 currently. I am not sure I can get more than $800-900 for my current one. Also, there was an issue with some noise coming from the newer version( I remember that there were specific serial numbers that were affected), is that issue resolved? I like to do low light photography and landscape. Please suggest. Thanks,
Ray

Prime tele lenses with EF mount

Hi,

I know that Sigma has or had prime lenses with long focal lengths like 300mm f/2.8 or 500mm f/4.5.
I'm not sure weather Tamron had such or not.

But why the canon "alternatives" are releasing a lot of zoom lenses like sigma 120-300, sigma 150-600 or tamron 150-600, for example, and not prime lenses with good build and image quality?

With a fair price couldn't they make quite a lot of money with them?

6D + 580EXII serious TTL metering problem?

I've through a lot of trouble using my new 6D with my 580EXII on TTL mode.

I used to use the speedlight with my T2i using center weight metering and it worked flawlessly all the time

Now with the 6D, it heavily underexposes at random intensities. I have to set it to +3ev compensation to get usable slightly underexposed images (not perfect but ok to lift on post). some times +3ev over exposes and I have to set +2 or +1.

I used that flash with T2i for 3 years so definitely I'm not commiting any dumb misconception while metering or analysing the situation. I always shot events using center weight metering on T2i and it worked great.

ps: I'm using magic lantern. I'm already using it for about 4 years and I know it may have bugs but now sure if it affects the metering
