Looking for recommendation on light kit

I'm looking for a recommendation on a light kit for a beginner. I want to be able to shoot glass, (bottles, pint glasses, etc) indoors. I'd like to be able to minimize reflections and glare. The overhead lighting in my house creates reflections which I'd like to minimize or eliminate altogether.

Are strobes the way to go, or would something continuous be better? I do have a Canon Speedlite, but even that is hard to use without creating a nasty reflection. I've been looking at the Lowel EGO kits, but not sure if that would suit my needs or not.

Would like to spend around $200, if that is even possible. Thanks in advance for any comments/advise!

Already bashing the 7d MkII because of the Samsung NXI?

Before we get to even try a production MkII I see so many posts, "Oh look at this brand X in comparison, wow, Canon blew it!" so I thought I'd share that I see Samsung pulled their sample images from the NXI on Flickr after being bashed on how bad they were. I didn't see those and I haven't seen production (nor has anyone else) sample images from the 7d MkII yet either so I'll hold judgement until we see the 'real deal'- and even then there's the difference of who's doing the shoot and the processing. No sense knocking cameras we've never got to use yet. (But of course, not a smart move on Samsung's part if they really were bad!)

Canon Developing New-Concept Photo-Storage Device

HTML:

This one was lost in yesterdays camera and lens launches.

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 15 September 2014 – Canon today announced that it is developing a new-concept photo-storage device, tentatively called the Cross Media Station, which will enable users to easily enjoy high-image-quality photos and movies captured by digital cameras.

In addition to offering the same key concepts as Canon’s digital cameras—high speed, comfortable operation and high image quality—the Cross Media Station will enable users to save and make use of their photos and movies with ease and peace of mind, allowing them to thoroughly and effortlessly enjoy their high-image-quality photo and movie libraries.

Through NFC technology, images and movies can be easily transferred from a camera and saved to the Cross Media Station, after which they can be viewed in high quality on a television. In addition, when connected to a network, the Cross Media Station will allow users to easily share photos and movies as well as output images from a printer, along with other various functions. At this time, specifications, pricing, launch date and other details are yet to be announced.

Canon will continue to contribute to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture through new technologies and products that meet the expectations of a wide range of users.

I checked my 7D today and I found something strange... it still works!

Everyone (including myself) seems to be searching the internet for reviews on the new 7D2. It looks like an impressive camera, kind of like how the 7D looked impressive back in 2009 when it was first introduced.

Well, I find myself wanting a new 7D2, but... my now 3 year old 7D still works perfectly and still takes amazing photos... What's my point?

My point is, I will probably upgrade to the 7D2 eventually, but not today. I love my 7D and it still does today what it has always done for me, take fantastic photos. It's still lighting fast and I love the image quality, even at high ISO's. No it's not a low light camera and it was never designed to be, but with a little post-processing images even taken at ISO 3200 are very nice, especially when they are of a hummingbird's wings frozen in time...

I am forcing myself to remember that it is the photographer that makes the photo, not his or her equipment. Yes tools give a workman more options BUT any camera in the hands of a skilled workman (or woman) is an amazing thing. You can capture a moment in time and share it with your friends, family and even make a living doing so.

I love my 7D. I don't see me getting rid of it anytime soon.

How can we improve on 5D3 to 5D4?

This is a list of things I have found I'd like fixed or updated to in the 5D4 in retrospec of the 7DII release.

Stills Side

1. Blinky AF point
2. Linked AF point Spot Metering
3. 1/250th Sync speed bump. (1/500 would be even more sweet)
4. Built in RT transmitter
5. 7 FPS bump and improved buffer for dual card writing. (pitiful if you use the SD card slot currently.)
6. Dual CF or SD, just pick one or the other.
7. Add dual custom buttons like the 1Dx besides the lens mount.
8??. Did anyone notice the second curtain sync C-fn through PC sync missing in the mk3? I was positive this was on my 5Dc or the 5D2...
9. Make the Rate button do something else beside's rate and protect. :/
10. Slight screen bump in resolution/size and/or Touchscreen with optional toggle.
11. Lastly, Any ISO/IQ/Resolution bump is nice but these other features are much more important to me.
12. Glowing buttons like d4.

Video side.

1. DPAF
2. 4K
3. RAW Video Internally (if possible, Magic lantern will get it anyway.)
4. Peaking
5. Crop Mode 1080P

Thats all I could think of at this moment and if you'd like to add, please do.

7D2 does have EC for manual mode

From dpreview:

"Like the Canon 1D X, the 7D Mark II does allow you to continue using exposure compensation in M mode with Auto ISO. However, the implementation is not very user friendly. You'll have to take your eye away from the viewfinder, push the 'Q' button, then use the multi-controller to scroll over to the exposure compensation scale, and then use the rear control wheel for adjustment."

Clunky but it is there. Now if they would provide this on the 5d3, that would make me a happy camper.

Canon 1dx shutter problems

Hello dear friends.
Even though I'm still in love with my 1DX,
Still a "bit" of disappointment from the last repair.

205k on the body which is 2 years old.
Just came back from Canon Mississauga.

Still think the toughest bodies on the planet can have a longer live.
And it's never been on the rain or desert or any other crazy weather environment strictly Weddings and never used 14 fps.

Especially frustrating to see Canon's advertising where they are repeating every single time - "performance without compromise, for up to 400,000 cycles. "
And of course it's not covered by Canon Canada warranty as body is 2 y.o.

Not good Canon, not good.

Should I try to fix my Canon EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II?

Hey all,

New to the forums, but been lurking for awhile now.

I just bought this gem of a lens for $60.00 off eBay. Works great on my 40D and the image quality is excellent. It has somewhat of a cult following, some say its close to L quality...

However, the manual focus ring sticks sometimes. The auto focus is perfect, but I would like to see if I could repair or fix the sticky focus ring. Anyone have any suggestions, I would appreciate it...I only paid $60 bucks for it, so I actually was thinking of tearing it apart and cleaning and re-greasing it. Anyone have any experience tearing these down? Is it that difficult?

Which Tilt/Shift lens to choose?

I've been looking at the tilt/shift lenses for some time, and the ability to change the focus wedge is appealing to my geeky side. As usual, googling for which tilt/shift lenses are used for what, is just as futile as trying to drink from a firehose :(

I guess that the 17mm and 24mm are primarily used for architecture and landscape work, and the 90mm for products (and that miniature effect). But what about the 45mm?

Since I am mostly thinking to use selective focus (tilt), I presume that the 45mm and 90mm are more obvious tools. However, since I already have the 1.4x and 2x (MkIII) extenders in, one option could be to use an extender with the 24mm, allowing me to dabble in architectual shots as well..

Looking at the local 2nd hand market, it seems that there are a bunch of 24mm, 45mm, and 90mm available for reasonable cost, but which focal length would be the obvious choice?

I have zooms in the similar focal length areas, but no primes yet. I'm (also) tempted to get the 100mm L-macro too, but that's a seperate topic.

Edit: I'm shooting on a FF camera (5D3).

7DII No Wifi

Dare I say it, I'm pretty disappointed that there is no Wifi in the 7DII.

I've got a 70D and have never posted a picture to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, but have had great results using the Canon App to control the camera wirelessly to get up close and personal to wildlife with some great results, and then connecting to my iPad afterwards in the pub to view my shots on a decent sized screen.

I think Canon have missed an important trend here.

Consequently, i can't think of one occasion where GPS would have been of any use to me at all.

Am I missing the point?

Canon EOS 7D MK II Field Review of THE APS-C DSLR KING .

THE APS-C DSLR KING

After a day spent shooting one of the toughest of traditional sports, (‘Calcio fiorentino’ dates back to the 16th century), Alessandro was delighted with how the EOS 7D Mark II stood up to the test, and complimented the camera on its ability to meet his exacting standards.

“I am obsessed with speed and quality,” he laughs. “There used to be a time in DSLRs where you could have one thing but not the other. But not any more. This EOS 7D Mark II is like a small EOS-1D X and it’s got all the performance with half the size, and all of the quality with none of the compromise. It is the king of the APS-C cameras, for sure. It is definitely a camera I would have in my camera bag. Canon engineers have done such a great job. They made a great camera with fantastic speed and it is really a revolution in this type of camera with 10 frames per second and a 20 Megapixel sensor. I think Canon has raised the game again; just when you think they can’t do any better, they go and do this. So, bravo to Canon!”
