New Full Frame Camera in Testing? [CR1]

<p>A <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_1Dx_mk2.html" target="_blank">mention on Northlight</a> about someone from Canon apparently visited a few studios in the New York City area recently with a “test” camera in an EOS-1D X body. Images had to be processed and viewed on a particular laptop and none of the images could be copied or kept.</p>
<p>The image files were very similar in size to the EOS 5D Mark III’s 22mp files, but exhibited “much” better colour accuracy and detail. This camera is supposedly for later this year or early next year.</p>
<p>Could this be a replacement to the EOS-1D X, or an introduction of a new camera such as the rumor favourite EOS 3D?</p>

Price tag to sell a Canon 7D

Hi Canonites,
I would like to sell my 2+ years old Canon 7D in a local online marketplace, the cam has all the accessories, box and normal signs of use like a couple of minor scratches. It has done 44k clicks.

Here in NL the new bodies sell for 1000/1100 euros, so I was thinking to price it around 650.

How much would you ask for the camera?

Thanks!

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG Art in August? [CR2]

<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16574"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16574">Tweet</a></div>
<p>We’re told that Sigma will announce the 85mm f/1.4 DG Art series lens in late August, in time for Photokina in Germany. Availability may not be until early 2015. Perhaps this is to steal some of the thunder from the expected Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 OTUS lens that will be announced at Photokina.</p>
<p>It’s also possible that Sigma will announce something like a 300mm-600mm supertelephoto zoom lens. Although that may not come until 2015. There was no mention of whether or not the lens would have a constant aperture, or even what the aperture would be.</p>

Canon EOS M Vanishes from Canon USA Web Site

HTML:
<div name="googleone_share_1" style="position:relative;z-index:5;float: right; /*margin: 70px 0 0 0;*/ top:70px; right:120px; width:0;"><g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16572"></g:plusone></div><div style="float: right; margin:0 0 70px 70px;"><a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-url="http://www.canonrumors.com/?p=16572">Tweet</a></div>
<p>We were alerted to the fact that Canon USA has removed the EOS M camera from their web site. They still list two of the 3 EOS M lenses, but there doesn’t appear to be any reference at all to the EOS M camera.</p>
<p>Are we going to see a mirrorless from Canon back in North America? At this point, I wouldn’t think so. Unless they completely revamp the product concept, it seems to be a lame duck system for Canon shooters.</p>
<p>There’s the possibility we see an EF based mirrorless system, maybe an even smaller SL1 style DSLR. I love the SL1 and I think removing the prism and introducing a few more pancake style lenses with an EF mount would be welcomed.  I’m speculating, as I haven’t heard anything to actually support such a concept.</p>
<p>Or maybe Canon is going to concentrate on the prosumer level of cameras and lenses, as that appears to be where the money is for companies in this industry at this time.</p>
<p><em>thanks Tom</em></p>

<p><b>MELVILLE, N.Y., May 27, 2014</b> – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce a new marketing campaign, “Bring It,” designed to enlighten consumers to a new perspective of telling better stories with higher quality images and video. The campaign, scheduled to roll out this month, features Canon’s line of EOS digital SLR cameras and lenses with a rallying cry for everyone to bring their best images and videos to be shared on the Canon “Bring It” microsite.</p>
<p>With a history dating as far back as the 1930s, Canon brought high-quality photography to market. Today, Canon builds on its legacy by bringing a movement designed to show the public the value a Canon camera can bring to capture outstanding images and videos. Consumers should not settle for good enough, when they can have great. The new ‘Bring It’ campaign asks the masses to bring their talent, bring everything they have to the art of creating inspiring still and video images.</p>

Consumers are also encouraged to be part of this social movement using the hashtag #BringIt every time they upload their creative HD videos and still images on social media sharing sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Consumer submitted content shared online with #BringIt may be featured and celebrated on the campaign microsite, bringit.usa.canon.com, beginning in July.</p>
<p>“We want this new ad campaign to inspire everyone who is passionate about photography to show us the talents they possess,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “The idea behind ‘Bring It’ is to encourage people to strive to not only take better pictures and videos, but to take their cameras wherever they go, allowing them to tell their unique visual stories -stories that will stand out from the crowd and last a lifetime.”</p>

Comic Con

I wanted portable lighting, so that I could make portrait photos in the busy halls of the comic con event. Last time I went I had my wife with me, and she held the softbox - this made it a lot easier, this time she didn't come so I had to do it myself - see attached image....

Photos not taken with flash setup, I used a 200mm f2 - carrying all this around was exhausting... my right hand was shaking by the end of the day.

Return policy on lenses/equipment?

Hi, huge fan of this site - long time reader, first time poster.

I wanted to share a recent experience, and hoping to find out if this is common to many stores.

Over the last couple years my wife and I have purchased a lot of equipment for her studio. As of late, we have purchased all our equipment at B&H and some of the larger stores (non-chains) in Toronto with great experiences. We recently purchased the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II, however, changed our minds the following day and decided to return the lens (we converted to all primes 2 years ago, but considered adding the 24-70 to her kit). I should note the box was never opened, and returned to the store the next business day. When we arrived at the store (a large national chain in Canada with 6 locations), we were informed that their policy is no refunds or exchanges on "professional gear over $1000". When I bought the lens I was never informed that it was final sale, and it only appeared in the fine print on the receipt (which I only received after the lens was purchased and they had my money).

This experience has caught me off guard. In an era where everything is becoming "pro" or "prosumer", what is included in "professional gear" is very vague and pretty much includes all camera bodies and all high-quality lenses.

While I haven't returned lenses in the past, I appreciate the option, or the store should be explicit in stating final sale. Has anyone had a similar experience? Is this common practise at many stores? At the very least, I won't be shopping local for cameras or lenses again.

Thanks.

5d III AF in LV on 800mm f5.6+2xTC works!

I may just be announcing my ignorance here, but I was quite surprised to find that in live view only, my 5d III autofocuses perfectly when mounted to my Sigma 300-800 f5.6 paired with a 2x teleconverter. As soon as I switch back to regular shooting without LV, it hunts continuously without locking AF, which is what I expected in the first place. I was working with a stationary subject and mounted the 2x and switched to LV to zoom in and manually focus as best I could only to find the AF working perfectly, albeit a tad slowly. I would certainly not use such for action subjects.

I don't know if this is a known plus and I've just been living in a box, but if there is anyone else out there using big glass on a Mark III who also didn't know this, this combination is working for me.

7d2 IQ thoughts.

Most of you have been using Canon for long and have been following its progress.

I realize 7d2 it will be fast, responsive etc etc. but do you think the IQ will be noticeably better than Canon's latest 70D say at ISO 1200?

I am wondering when (and if ever) the latest crop cameras will be able to compare with 5d2. Is 6 years enough for technology to reach a point where new crop camera's catch up to full frame?

I would be very happy if the new 7D2 quality would be close to 5d2. Wondering if that is too much to hope for considering the frame size difference?

I was shooting in the rain forest today...

...there's no punch line... sounds like a joke, but no.

My point is that it was rally liberating to know that the gear I was shooting with is weather resistant. It rained... It cleared up... It rained again and I couldn't have cared less. I didn't have to rush to put a sleeve over the lens and the body. I didn't have to put my gear into its bag. I didn't have to run and find shelter... which there really wasn't any.

I seriously mulled over the new sigma 50 art... and while I went another direction, having the weather sealing is a joy.

And before y'all start asking for amazing shots from the rain forest... there weren't any. It's all green on green on green...

My initial impression of the 6D and a pretty major issue I had

I'm a total laymen on the decisions canon makes to balance making a high performance camera vs marketing but my impression is marketing is the higher concern and honestly I can't blame them for that. But boy would I love to see the best features from the 6D and the 5D3 all in one camera.

For me, the worst problems with equipment are the ones that work sometimes and not others.

A quick background on my initial impressions of the 6D
In January I bought a 6D it just seemed like the best value for what you get wifi and gps seemed like nice features bundled with the center cross type focus point that really performs well. In reality the gps doesn't turn off when the camera is off (this seems like the camera is intentionally Nerf'd).

Overall, I like the camera, its a little tough as a wedding photographer carrying two camera bodies (5dMk2 is my main) that are controlled a little different but that's where I am.

My 6D Issue
At a wedding in march I had an assistant with one of my 600ex-rt flash on her camera as a slave to my Flash giving me the ability to backlight a bit. And her the ability to switch to master and fire a third 600EX-RT slave if she had the angle and I didn't. That's when my flash stopped firing on the 6d. I checked the image meta data and it indicated the flash fired but it didn't. Additionally the flash switched to TTL from ETTL-II. On my 6D menu settings some of the flash functions were inaccessible. I sent the camera in for repairs (which sucked because its a busy time of year for me to only have one full frame camera.) Canon was great, they got my camera back quickly and apparently fixed the problem (I haven't been home yet as I was on a destination gig) I did call the support line they told me the hot shoe was malfunctioning. It was in in-warranty repair no charge (thank you canon).

Has anyone else have this issue? I get the impression its not too common. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again?

The worst part about it was for a while sometimes the 6D would allow ETTL and communicate with my flash and sometimes it would just stop. I couldn't make sense of it.

I am looking forward to trying it out again when I get back home.

Shawn

Debating on selling my 5D II and 35L/135L for a...

I've been debating on this for a couple months now since I don't really use them for more than taking pictures of my kids and some occasional outings with our friends. It is a pain to lug around with the battery grip and kids stuff and I don't feel like I'm really getting anymore good use of out if (although everytime I take a picture they come out AMAZING). Anyone have any recommendations on something new? I haven't been following the mirrorless cameras much but they seem to be the 'next big thing'. My only requirement is that the camera shoots in RAW as I love to edit photos and touch them up in Lightroom.

Canon 580 EXII powers off for no reason during a periods of time.....

Hello I'm wondering if anyone has this problem with their 580 EXII flash. This happens quite a few times the unit will shut off and disconnects itself electronically from the camera but turns backs on (of course after I miss the shot). I tried turning both the camera and the flash on and off repeatedly to reconnect it nothing but then magically it reconnects later. Go figure!!! Tired of missing shots... It's happens on both of my bodies 5D Mark II & III when this flash is attached. Thanks >:( >:( >:(

buy the 24-70 4 IS... or wait for the 2.8 IS?

so uuuuuhm... i got a decent bunch of extra money on side and been pondering an universal lens...
got a 5D III along with 70-200 4 IS, 50 1.2, and the zeiss 100 2 wannabe-macro
my first thought was the inexpensive 24-105, but since i lack anything wide-angle i read that the 24-70 4 IS performs a TON better at 24mm
secondly... i would prefer the luxury of IS over hauling a tripod with me... i probably have a special kind of epilepsy that kicks in only when i hit the trigger cause even with the 50mm at 1.2 on sunny days i manage to screw up photos... so IS is a must
thirdly and most importantly... all my lenses are 2nd hand and i would like to buy a general purpose lense which would be more or less my final addition

should i buy the relatively inexpensive 4 IS... or wait (god-knows-how long) for the (god-knows-how-expensive) 2.8 IS?

what would you do?
and no... tamron is nice but id rather stick to canon ::)

Patent: Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 DO

<p>A new patent showing an optical formula for an EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 DO has made an appearance. The patent also shows what appears to be a new 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 DO optical formula. Canon appears to be continuing their investment in diffractive optics R&D, though we haven’t seen a new DO lens in quite some time. I don’t think we’ll see a new 100-400 with the technology, and with the current 70-300L being pretty small and light, I’m not sure we’d see a new 70-300 DO either. It’s good to see they continue to develop the lens concepts though, and hopefully we see some new ones in the coming years.</p>

Comet 209P/Linear Meteor Shower

All,

I was ready. Had my 14mm f/2.8, my remote, my tripod and my new gimbal. Got the times from news articles. Got the coordinates (local time midnight with compass 348 and az 28 degrees. Even used my iPhone app to make sure the direction to the constellation Camelopardis was where I thought it should be. And I got.....

NADA.

I expected light pollution (could not get out of town) and was concerned because of the fires in Northern Arizona and the articulate that would be on the Northern horizon. But, no streaks / meteors at all over 2 hours. Anybody see anything?
