Advice on dream African photo safari

Hello everyone,

I have been given the go ahead to plan a dream wildlife photo safari for the summer of 2015. Photographing African wildlife on safari has been a goal of mine for years and because this coincides with a big birthday celebration I have been given permission to design my perfect trip. Now I need to figure out where to start. The following are my thoughts already.

- In terms of camera + lenses, I will have a 5D3 (or newer body) and a 200-400/1.4x + other smaller lenses. I may rent or buy a second body.
- My goal is to take portfolio worthy photographs that I will sell as prints. I have photographed wildlife for some time and am confident I can do this if conditions are right.
- I have researched Africa a bit and found that the primary challenge in accessing wildlife (besides luck) are the following
- Some places are overflowing with tourists and vehicles will often surround an interesting spot
- In many locations vehicles are not allowed off road
- For this reason I am almost certain at least a portion of our stay will be in Sabi Sands, South Africa.
- The entire land based portion of the trip will be three weeks

At this point, therefore, my main dilemma is do we spend the entire trip in South Africa - going between different private reserves with perhaps some time in Kruger, or do we combine some reserves in South Africa with somewhere else - such as Botswana. One goal of course is to photograph as many different types of wildlife as possible.

Any help on where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Which Normal to Wide Angle Focal Length Matches Your Vision?

We all see the world differently and it's the reason why some people find the 50mm matches the way they "see" the world while others would say 35mm, 85mm, etc. I'm not talking about some scientific match to the human eye, but the way you see the world around you.

Personally, I find that 24mm matches the way I see the world around me. Maybe I keep more personal distance between myself and the people and things around me that most people, but if I go through my lens choices and EXIF, the majority of my landscape, architecture, street, and even portraits (I prefer environmental shots) are right around 24mm. Here are some examples of how I see things at 24mm:

I'm curious to hear about other people's views (& photo examples) on this particular subject.

90EX on a 5D3?

Hey gang,

I shoot a 5D3 and have a 600EX-RT, but I only pack it for special events. (I am more of a natural light shooter.)

However, I've considered picking up a 90EX with all the EOS-M deals going on these days. It's just so small that I could pocket the damn thing and use it in a pinch.

Does anyone have experience using this little guy on a 5D or 6D?

In particular, I've heard the recycle time is toxically slow -- I've heard 5-6 seconds (is that right?).

No AF assist beam, right? Anyone have experience trying to use it in low light?

In addition, I'd also be concerned about the flash not getting over my bigger lenses. I imagine my wide primes would be fine, but I have a 24-70 F/4 and the 100L macro. (I certainly wouldn't bother with this with my 70-200 F/2.8). Anyone have a read on what lenses this does/doesn't complement well?

I welcome your thoughts on this.

Thx,
A

Wait for the Canon 5D Mark IV or get the Mark III?

Hi

Sorry for this topic, but I'm at the point where I want to upgrade to full frame after having a 600D for a couple of years.

I want it for 50/50 photo and video, I would get the 6D but the video on the MK3 is much more superior! I've not spent this much money on a camera before, hence my last minute doubts and hesitation!

Thoughts on if its even worth thinking about waiting on the Mark IV please!

Thanks,

Ben.

Longer and faster, better?

Hey,

I am doing more and more wildlife photography (bit difficult not to living in India), and am thinking about getting a longer faster lens.

Most of my shooting is early in the morning, in the jungle/woods. every time i hope to come across tigers/leopards/bears, but these sightings are rare, so i amuse myself birding.

Currently i use a 5D MKIII and my 70-200 + 2x tcIII. The f/2.8 gives me the speed in the wee hours, and i pop on the TC when i need length and the light is better, but it is always a trade-off, and often i find myself in the situation where 200 is too short, but with the tc on the ISO/shutter speed is no longer ideal (there is an obvious point where i think adding the TC vs more extreme-cropping yields comparable results).

I am thinking about a 300mm 2.8, but the new version II is a little out of my budget. So either a second hand version I or maybe a Sigma EX 300mm f/2.8 APO DG HSM.

Any other suggestions? Has anyone any experience with the Sigma? How well does it take TCs? unfortunately TDP does not have the sigma in their comparison charts.

I guess this is more of a feasibility study for me. I'm trying to find the right/best price point.

Renting is an obvious solution for longer lenses, but it is not so easy here... the few places that have these lenses are so overwhelmed, you need to reserve your lens weeks, if not months in advance. I am just not that well organised! :)

Thanks

Canon 5d MK111 - 580ex and 430 ex 11 - rear sync

Hi,

I want to set up a shot where I have a couple standing still whilst I write a word with sparklers next to them. The couple is frozen by the flash and the word is clear.

I have tried this with the 580ex set to rear sync and this works fine but can I do this using the 430ex II as well as a second off camera flash?

So the set up would be 580ex on camera and 430ex II off camera. How do I fire both flashes in rear sync mode? The only way I can get the 430 to fire is when I set the 580 to be the master the 430 to be the slave but then I don't have the option to use rear sync on either flash guns.

Does anyone no the best set up using these flash guns and camera to freeze the couple but capture the writing with a long exposure?

Fluffed it! Moon and ISS

You could see the International Space Station fly across the sky (it moves fast!) and across the moon tonight from parts of Ireland. Unfortunately I fluffed the photo... I exposed for the moon, not realising that the ISS would be a lot less bright until I reviewed the photos afterwards. A longer telephoto would have helped, but I don't have one.
So, if you ever get to see this, over-expose for the moon or be smarter than me....
The ISS is the few pixels in about the centre of the image....

100MM 2.8 USM or THE 100MM L for portrait and macro work??

I was wondering what are your opinions on 100mm Canon macro lenses?

I plan on buying something that is great both for fashion macro (face-close ups, jewelry, eyes, lips, nails) and portrait (including full body shots). I dislike changing lenses, and I only have one body(edit it's a 5d mkII) to work with.

Autofocus has to be great, I tested a used 100mm USM MAcro, and it back-focused a lot, and I'm not sure is that a common problem, as many have complained about the early examples of this lens, and I don't know how old that lens was. ;D

Distortion is my big concern. How much is there in both of them when it comes to barrel/pincushion?

I own 24-105, but it does have a way too strong of a distortion, and I don't like that effect one bit. It is only perfectly straight at 35mm. I shoot with a lot of horizontal/vertical/diagonal lines on the set and it MUST be straight at the capture.

Sharpness is a must, 24-105 is reasonably sharp, but I really hope to get something much sharper.

Bokeh is important only as far is looks good, not broken up too much (like 50 1.8 for example), and not jaggedy, but I shoot stopped down exclusively, so DOF is really nothing to consider.

Price is important, but I'll stretch if I must.

Anyone has experience with either/both? Your opinion? :) :) :)

Maybe even some other manufacturer? :o

I shoot using 5d mkII. I shoot fashion and internal AF is just fine with me.

Canon Tilt-Shift Updates [CR1]

New Tilt-Shift lenses?

I’ve received a few bits of information about new L tilt-shift lenses from Canon. We’ve heard there would be a direct replacement for the 45mm f/2.8 and it would be an L. We’ve heard that the 90mm f/2.8 would be replaced with a TS-E 135mm f/2.8L. This is not the first time we’ve heard that the 90 tilt-shift would get a longer focal length.

We also understand that Canon is redesigning the shift mechanism on the new tilt-shift lenses and that they won’t share the same design as the TS-E 17 f/4L and TS-E 24 f/3.5L II. I would gladly welcome a more reliable design to the shift unit, and hopefully Canon can make the new lenses a bit less prone to broken knobs and other issues that I have seen.

I asked if updates to the TS-E 17 f/4L and TS-E 24 f/3.5L II were likely if a new design is seen as more reliable and I was told it would be unlikely beyond some stealth updates. Design changes can be implemented in lenses over the years they’re in production.

EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 Vs EF 24-105mm f/4 L

Hi Guys,

Currently I own Canon 7D with 15-85mm lens on it. I am pretty much happy with this combination, the way I get the pictures and I see them sharp and colorful. But when ever I look on the net about 24-105mm , I am excited to buy it, but still in dilemma to get it or not because I own 15-85mm. Any suggestions to get or not 24-105 mm? In addition 15-85mm I also use 70-200 f/4L for telephoto.

Thanks In Adv,
Charan

Stolen Canon Lens 150-600

Hi all,

I hope this is OK to post this here.

I have had my newly converted Canon FD 150-600 f5.6 lens stolen/gone missing in the UK Postal Service en-route to Norway. I know how these things travel around, so should you be offered this lens I would appreciate any information that might lead to its return.

The lens is a pristine example that was on its way back from Les Bosher after having a universal mount fitted and separate zoom focus wheel conversion.

Serial Number is 10371

It still has the name of the previous owner written with a permanent marker inside the handle. (St++en Jo++son)

Thanks in advance,

James

Pentax K-3

This beast....

If pentax had in lens IS, and a longer brighter lens than 560 5.6, I would be totally tempted to spring for this beast...

Except, I have an odd fixation with the 7D. I eagerly await to pony cash over for the 7D MK II. But, Canon should take serious warning about this. Pentax has some very neat looking primes. Anyone shoot pentax too? (other than old m42 stuff... which is totally gold!!! I love that takumar thing...)

Ok, so I took my T3i/24-105 combo to Mexico

Just returned from 2 weeks in the Yucatan (primarily Cancun) with family and friends. Took along a T3i and 24-105. Went on two excursions: Visited Ek Balam and a nearby cenote the first week; Sotuta de Peon and Merida the following week.

For the most part, walk-around general shooting with this combo was ok. Architectural-ish wide-angle type shooting -- not so good. For example: Sotuta de Peon is the oldest working hacienda in Mexico. Beautiful, Colonial style structure built in the 1800's. Interior shots were a challenge if not outright impossible.

I didn't want to deal with a lot of lens changes in the heat and humidity and occasional rain that is common during the rainy season in the Yucatan. I probably should have taken my 17-55 instead of the 24-105 but I think the focal range would have been similar with the 24-105 providing a bit more reach.

I guess this was a live and learn situation for me. I don't have the 10-22 and no plans on purchasing one.

Everything was shot RAW so I don't have any images to show (I've only been back 3 days and the first day was a crash day due to being up for about 16-18 hrs because of flight delay out of Cancun).

Maybe next time, shoot FF and 16-35 or something similar and just come to grips and carry 2 lenses.

If you could do this trip with these two venues in mind, what would you bring?

Baffles the mind

I've heard people in other threads talking about how they don't care about video functionality. I don't get it. How can someone love making images and completely dismiss motion pictures?

I do both and it only seems natural that if you like one you would like the other. I just can't wrap my head around it only wanting one. I can understand people having a preference, but to buy a $3000 body an never shoot video on it? Really?

In my opinion these cameras are set when it comes to photo features. They don't need to get any better than they already are. With maybe one exception, AF speed/accuracy during liveview. It's video features that are far behind where they should be and that should be the main focus right now of these camera manufacturers.

camera trap for wildlife photography

I don't know if some of you are interested in the camera trap technique for wildlife photography like Steve Winter does for Panthera or the National Geaographic, but i would like to share a link for an ebook written by a friend of mine about this particular technique which gives awesome results.

See what my friend can do with ol' rebel bodies and 10-20 lenses (here in the rainforests of Costa Rica) :

here's the direct link for the ebook :

Of course i don't earn any dollar on it, i just wanna share...
