T2i Upgrade Help Needed

I am a current owner of a Canon T2i. I have enjoyed learning about DSLRs using this camera but I am ready for an upgrade to the camera body. My budget is not unlimited (as much as I want the 5DM3, I can't afford it right now). I currently have the following lenses:

Canon EF-S 10-22mm
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
Canon EF 24-105 f/4
Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC

Even though half my lenses are crop lenses, I would consider moving to a full frame as I can still use the EF-S lenses on the side.

I am usually taking portrait shots of friends and family at various events (bbq, indoor parties, etc.) and landscape shots.

I have looked at the 6D, the 7D and the 60D quite a bit, but really not sure what to do. I want something that is solid compared to the T2i for moving objects (people dancing, kids running around, etc.) and performs well in low light environments. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Has anyone sent their 3rd party lens (Sigma) to be looked at...

Hi All,

I have recently purchased the Sigma 35 1/4 and really like the lens. However I do notice some shots' focus is off (w/the 5D Mark II I use). I called Sigma's Service center and they said I could send it in w/my camera to have it looked at. I have never sent my lens/camera anywhere before and was wondering how many of you have done so and how safe it is to do so.

Any feed backs would be appreciated! Thanks!

5D mkII Image noise in long exposure

Hey all, was shooting some stars last night with my 5dII, and was getting some HORRIBLE image noise. Was at ISO 160, f/9 and about 30 minute exposure. Here is a screen shot at 100% from lightroom, SOOC. I do shoot raw. Just wondering if anyone one else has these issues, and how they resolve them. Thanks!

cheap lowlight 30-35mm for APS-C

Hi friends,

I've become a father few weeks ago and looking for a new lens for my 60D to shoot my baby boy. I have a Canon 501.8II but feel it is to tight on my crop and the AF is too slow (babies seem to move a lot :) ).

So...my budget is no more than 500$ and I was pondering what is a better buy:

* Old Sigma 30 1.4 (cheap ~300$, nice but not great (?) pics, especially wide open).

* New Sigma 30 1.4 (not the new 35 Art); 500$, better build and picture quality than the old 30, better AF (?), sharp wide open (?).

* Samyang 35 1.4; ~450$, very good quality (both image and build), FF compatible (for the future). It is MF, which is generally is OK for me, but wide open in low light? How will it work?

To summarize:
1) I never used any of this and all the aforementioned is from the web. I would really appreciate first hand advice on these lenses. Do you think the new Sigma 30 is 200$ better than the old?

2) Generally, is 30-35mm (48-56mm on crop) is a good choice to shoot a baby indoors (or low light photos in general).

P.S I don't have the money for the 899$ 35 Art or Canon L glass ( :( ).

Thanks a lot!

70-200 Choices

I am looking to make a much needed upgraded to the 70mm+ range of my lenses. I know this is a topic that crops up quite frequently and the answer is always, quite rightly, buy the 2.8L IS II. Unfortunately my budget cannot stretch that far and is capped at £1000 which puts the Canon f4 L, Canon f4 L IS, Canon f2.8 L USM non-IS and Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM in the frame.

My work is split 50/50 between studio portraiture and concert photography. Really it has to be one of the f2.8 lenses. The concert photography is a mix of relatively stationary singers and more active bands or cabaret performers where IS wouldn't really help. The studio work is often tripod mounted but I like the freedom to hand-hold where possible.

As I might benefit from IS I am tempted by the Sigma but most reviews raise concerns about corner softness, particularly with the lens wide open. Equally as the Canon f2.8 USM is an old lens there aren't many current reviews that go into the same detail so I'm unsure whether it fares any better.

Any advice from those with more experience with either lens would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Moire in the 1DX and 5D3

I shot a wedding last weekend and the grooms' suits are showing up with a crazy amount of moire that I haven't seen before. I was shooting a 1DX and 5D3 with a 24-40 f/2.8II and a 70-200 f/2.8II with natural light and flash and saw moire in every combination. Here is a sample with the 1DX and 24-70 with flash. Any thoughts on avoiding/correcting it?

Review: Canon 35 f/1.4L vs Sigma 35 f/1.4 DG HSM

1200.jpg

I did a head-to-head comparison between the Canon 35 f/1.4L and the Sigma 35 f/1.4 DG HSM. I looked at the strengths and weaknesses and wrote up some thoughts. on when one lens might be a better choice over the other

Basically, the 35L has a more robust construction, while the Sigma is sharper. Focusing is about the same in both lenses. Bokeh on the Canon better, but in the end the Sigma's image quality made it the clear choice. You can take a look at the the rest of the writeup if you're curious about the details and let me know what you think.

USA photo liability insurance

I would like to know if any working pros have recommendations for business insurance that specifically includes liability insurance. (I tried searching the forum but all the insurance topics seem to deal with coverage for camera gear). I plan to start leading photo tours, so I need pretty good coverage for the participants. I got a postcard in the mail from Hiscox Insurance, but a quick look at online reviews tells me to stay as far away as possible. Any leads would be immensely helpful (please respond only if you live in the USA).

Beginning of a new Canon starting with 7D Mk II?

Canon has definitely stretched the limits of their current tech, reading all the reviews feels similar in all aspects (hell the 700D is barely a refresh!)

I just feel like it's getting stale and the competition is definitely growing up fast (Sony RX1, Samsung NX300)
The AF on the Samsung NX300 is just ridiculous especially at that price point.

How long can Canon keep the same playbook, yeah they have a new sensor in the works and their new live view AF should be announced next month but these are higher end models while other companies are bringing it to their lower end models quite quickly and already are working on successors that should compete with Canon's new tech.

I'm awaiting to see what the 7D Mark II brings since that will eventually trickle down to the Rebel/EOS M series.

I guess I'm ready for an upgrade and I want to stick to Canon due to my lenses yet I'm just twiddling my thumbs while the competition looks more appealing with each announcement.

Incapable of posting to the adorama thread money still not returned

The site administrator has prevented me from continuing to post on the Adorama thread. My money is still not returned its been a week and a day and they still have not provided proof that they have done a thing with my money. All I get is responses from Helen saying that it will be back... Something is seriously wrong here.

A Big Megapixel Discussion

Development announcement before years end?

There has been a bit of discussion lately about the upcoming “big megapixel” camera body from Canon. The camera is slated for release some time in 2014. We’re told that there is a possibility that the camera will get a development announcement before the years end.

We’re told there is still discussion in regards to form factor of such a camera. There’s probably an even 50/50 split in preferences between an EOS-1Dx style body or a EOS 5D Mark III style body. I fall into the latter category, the smaller, the better for me. However, there are lots of people that love the ergonomics of the EOS-1D X. I guess it’s possible there could be a mix of both styles of body.

A different source says there are 3 different sensors currently in development, all of which are above the 35mp pixel count. Canon is apparently quite motivated to make industry leading sensors again, as we should see some of that in the EOS 7D Mark II and perhaps even the 70D in the summer.

The EOS-1D X is apparently slated for replacement in late 2014 or early 2015, and Canon would like to have a large megapixel camera on the market before that happens.

Worth getting an SD card for 5D3?

So my new camera is on the wagon to me now.

I've got a 16Gb CF that's currently in my 5D2 which, naturally, will be moving into my 5D3.

Given the confusion of card reading speeds and settings changing due to cards being pulled in and out (that have different settings for each), is there any real benefit to using an SD apart from backing up?

I can't say I've ever wished for a second slot for either type in my 5D2, even while knowing that the 5D3 has the capability.

Also, would anyone recommend using JUST an SD as they are quite a bit cheaper?

IQ and AF-speed only: 70-200 f/2.8L IS II + 1.4X III vs. 70-300 f/4-5.6L

Hello,

I'm looking for a good "up to 280mm/300mm" zoom for my 60D, and while I'm aware that prices, weight, f-numbers and convenience (such as 70-200 + 1.4x essentially being a 2-in-1 alternative) don't compare, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with both alternatives, and could tell me how the two compare in regard to image quality and AF-focusing speed.

When it comes to the IQ, I've used the-digital-picture.com's lens comparison tool. It won't, however, let me compare similar focal lengths (280mm is the only option if I want to add a 1.4X - which actually looks better than the 70-300 at 200mm, but worse than the 70-300 at 300mm...).

Thanks a lot! :)

New Review

Our review of the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II has been posted. Justin was eager to know whether or not it was worth the money over the very good EF 17-40 f/4L.

For the type of event work Justin does, it looks like he does think it’s better. Although I’d be less inclined to recommend it over its cheaper cousin if you’re primarily shooting landscape. The corner softness on the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II isn’t any better than the EF 17-40 f/4L, the filter size difference could also be an issue for some people. However, if you need that stop of light, the EF 16-35 f/2.8L II is really your only choice in the Canon lineup.

Says Justin

“The 16-35mm f/2.8 L II beats my 17-40 f/4L in all aspects hands-down, except for cost. While I won’t find myself making the upgrade anytime soon, I did find the superior optics and faster aperture a boon in many situations I was in while working with the 16-35. The weight difference became less significant, and I actually mistook one lens for the other while packing my kit one day.”

Patents: New 50mm, 85mm & 135mm Lenses

New fast primes

The often talked about 50 f/1.4 and 135 f/2 have appeared in a new patent this week. We’ve heard that a replacement to the 50 f/1.4 would come first. A new 135 f/2L is a desired lens if they put IS into the upgrade. We’ve also heard a new 85 f/1.2L with reduced weight and approved AF performance was also on the horizon.
