Why won't I use Nikon... Really?

I get asked a lot about why I use Canon gear, and why I won't use Nikon...
Of course it's often framed as a choice between brands - but really it's about the lenses and what I use them for...
If anyone knows my work, I use and test a lot of tilt/shift lenses - that should be a big hint...

Anyway after another 'Why won't you use Nikon' question - I've a somewhat longer answer, going back to 2003 and when Nikon were saying that you don't need 'full frame'

Hope it's of interest ;-)

'Cosina is preparing an RF mount lens with electronic contacts'

If I read the google translate correctly here
https://asobinet-com.translate.goog...l=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp , Cosina is preparing RF-mount lenses.

I suspect they will be manual focus lenses, but with an electronically controlled aperture. With electronic contacts the lens can also report its focal length so that IBIS 'just works'.

R5 Freezing with Clog3

Hi everyone,

After reading all about r5 freezing issues, I'm posting here to ask if you've ever heard about freezes issues exclusively in video mode under clog3. I can film without problem in all modes and quality but as soon as I activate a clog or clog 3, my video will cut out randomly and need a hard reset. I tried different lenses, parameters, Sd cards and Cfexpress, Firmwares but the problem still here and i need this body to work.

greetings.

EF-R control ring query

Can someone confirm if the control ring on the EF-R adapter is assigned exp comp ( or whatever) does it stay assigned regardless what lens you swap over?
I have a vast selection of EF glass. So would be swapping for different scenes/scenarios. I’m hoping once I’ve assigned the control ring my preferred function I can simply leave it mounted permanently on camera.

R5C FW rumor updates in 2023???

Hi - I have owned my R5C for almost a year now. Primary bought it because it fixed the overheating issues of 4k120 in the R5. I post this not to be controversial (Cinema vs photo); I actually appreciate some of the cinema features;

But... the R5Cs autofocus is *severely* limited in SF mode. Even the 8K60 does a better job of tracking where in SF mode you loose all those features. But I *need* people/object tracking in 4K120 (SF Mode w/ wav). Additionally autofocus in SF mode needs to officially support more than the two Cps and would be nice if we had the updated WideDR 709 profile the C70 got.

Who has an ear on the R5C FW development timeline? Are we expecting an update soon to fix these issues? It certainly is not a "Do everything camera" with out this fix. the C70 had this fixed last year (they can even go up to 160fps) not sure why this could not be an easy fix for canon (like the audio issue). BTW: Hoping for support for the EL-5 too for the photo side :)

More negative press for Canon

It seems like Canon has been funding Climate change deniers while projecting itself as enviormentally "friendly". Just when they didnt need anymore negative press here is one more skeleton from Canon's clauset.

How many years have I been here? (slclick & bluezurich combined)

And if I no longer own any Canon gear? Should I stick around for giggles?

Sure 'things haven't been too swell Wally' since the meltdown and sweeping changes at CR but I have enjoyed myself immensely overall and wish to reach out and thank the many here who contributed to my growth and gathering of information.

I have shot with Canon digitally since 1999 and off and on through the 70's and 80's with film. I never thought I'd be a switcher (those damn switchers, door hits ass comment insert here if you like)

Without folks such as Canonfanboy, Neuro, alanf, privatebydesign, etienne, jeffa, stevec, sharlin, unfocused and of course Craig not to mention so many others, (like adam what's his name and the unending quest for a EF 50 1.4 Mk ii) this site would not have been as enjoyable.

Thanks everyone!

USB-C type necessary for webcam use (Canon R6)?

I recently purchased an R6 (mark I) and want to use it as a webcam. Currently I only have regular USB 3.0 ports on my PC, but I have one PCI-E x1 slot available on the motherboard, allowing me to install a PCI-E card with a USB-C 3.1 (gen 1) port on it. Would this be sufficient for powering the camera while using it as a webcam? Or would I need a USB-C 3.1 gen 2 for this to work?

Right now while having the camera connected to the PC, it just uses the internal battery (and won't charge).

Bremerhaven, Fishing Harbour

Last year in May I went for a business trip to Bremerhaven, Northern Germany.
I had a pleasant stay, the weather was fine so close to the North Sea and I could take some time for taking photos early in the morning and mostly in the evening.
I had almost forgotten that I had not yet edited the pictures. Here are the first few, and I will add some more to this thread as soon as I've found the time to process them.
Most of the pictures were taken during walks around the Fishing Harbour.

After almost 30 years, Canon is ending the “Kiss” branding in Japan

With the announcement of the Canon EOS R50, which is the “spiritual” successor to the Canon EOS M50/M50 Mark II (Kiss M2) will not be using the “KISS” branding in Japan. This branding has existed for almost 30 years. What about “Rebel”? I think that it’s safe to say that we won’t be seeing that

Possible R3 Firmware with R6 II, R8, R7 AF improvements?

I know the R3 has many features that make it more appealing to several types of photographers compared to the new R6 Mark II and R8, but it seems like the AF system on the R6II and R8 and even R7 (perhaps having both a better AF algorithm as well as having more options) seems to have been improved over the R3. New features such as pre shot buffer RAW (not exact name I know) also seems more advanced.

Given that the R3 is the current top of the line Canon camera, what are people’s thoughts about the likelihood of Canon adding those new features and newer AF system to the R3 via firmware update given they are all using the same DigicX processor? Would they allow an entry level R8 to have a better AF system than an R3 given that the R3 is only a little over a year old?

Thoughts?

Canon Cinema EOS C70 shutter angle

Next week for the first time I am going to record files in Slow and Fast mode. 60 fps and 120 fps. I watched a video and it show that if I use shutter angle I don't need to change the shutter angle when I increase or decrease frame rates. In this video the guy says that I should only use the shutter in 180 angle for the 3 frame rates (23,98 fps, 60 fps, 120 fps. Is it right? I am use to do this way: 23,98 fps - 90º, 60 fps - 180º, 120 fps - 360º. What should I do?
