I have a "little“ problem with my Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 (the 1992 model, very old I know but I got it for free so why not (try) use it): whenever I want to take a photo with this lens at another aperture than 2.8, I get Err. 1 message (‘clean lens contacts and restart camera’). However, as long as I take photos at 2.8, it works perfectly fine. No errors.
But now it comes to the strange part (which doesn’t make sense to me): first of all, while filming, there is absolutely no problem if I use other apertures than 2.8, the camera continues to film as if the lens would work perfectly fine. Secondly, if I take photos with an aperture of more than 2.8, I get the error shown on the screen, but only while the camera is saving the photo I just took. After the photo is saved, it takes another maybe 5 secs, but then I can continue shooting (no restart of the camera needed). Of course in practice this is pretty annoying and very inefficient. I also need to underexpose the photo at about -2ev, no matter what shutter speed I use.

I already tried cleaning the contacts on the lens as the error message suggests, but ofc it didn’t help (which I honestly didn’t expected to do but yeah, still tried it). My friend, from whom I got this lens, has the same problem with the lens on his M50 (using the EF-M adapter obviously). I thought that maybe the adapter is the problem, but nope it’s not.
So I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this problem (even though I suspect this to be a mechanical problem…)? And more importantly, is there any chance the lens could damage my camera in any way if I continue using it?

And yes, I know, this lens is pretty old and even if it would be possible, having it repaired wouldn’t make sense, but until I can afford a newer 2.8 lens I’d like to use this one since it’s my only lens besides the kit lens.

Canon has updated the recent firmware for the Canon EOS R3 with v1.2.1.
Firmware Version 1.2.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

Adds the ability to set “Custom high speed continuous” to the Drive mode. It is possible to shoot from 2 to 50 images continuously at a speed of approximately 30 to 195 fps.
Adds the ability to select “FHD 239.76 fps/200.00 fps” in “High frame rate.”
Adds the ability for in camera “Depth compositing” during “Focus bracketing.”
Adds Focus bracketing and depth compositing with a flash (Speedlite EL-1).
Adds the ability of time-lapse movie recording. Note that the time-lapse movie setting is retained even if the camera enters the Auto Power Off state before starting time-lapse movie recording.

Hello everyone,

I have an R6 and find myself needing a speedlite and tripod for group shots of some upcoming family events indoors and my kids band concerts.

I like the 430/600 speedlite but they are expensive for my use.

Any suggestions?

I made the blunder of my life

10 days prior to going to Africa for a month long safari - I purchased a canon R5C thinking that I can use the best of both worlds in one camera and get wonderful video! I have Canon R5/R3 and have no issues with them.

I consider myself an advanced amateur in still photography but I am a novice when it comes to videography with dSLRs or MILC.

For the life of me can not figure out the settings for wildlife videography forget the "best settings" . I can not even set up the AF to work. I watched all the you tube videos - read the manual -there are not much on you tube on wildlife video with R5 C anyway ! But when I check in the field- everything falls apart - I can not even keep the moving subject focused or acquire focus on a moving subject - even if the subject is a human being 30 feet away !

I know the problem is with me - not with the camera! Please teach me how to set it up. I am leaving on Aug. 1st and need to have some confidence before I leave in shooting video.

P.S. the still photography part is absolutely fine. No issues

Canon has removed the firmware v1.2.0 download for the Canon EOS R3 due to a bug in the software.
The bug is described on the DPReview Forum
The issue is that if you have v1.2 on your camera and then perform a reset the mode dial does not work correctly and you cannot change between Tv Av etc
If you have updated to firmware v1.2.0 for the Canon EOS R3, do not do any resets until v1.2.1 is released.
Canon has always fixed these sorts of firmware bugs pretty quickly, so I would expect an update very soon.

I was at a professional sports event, in the press room and the discussion was TV lenses. When the Canon rep gave a date for the release of the lens he said it would be at the same time of a high-resolution R body. The lens is slated for 2024. This leads me to believe that the R1 is slated for "retail" distribution in 2024.

So I don't have my own test numbers from before 1.2 handy, but the internet tests I've found from other users appear to demonstrate that the R3 image buffer capacity has been optimized. And I mean shockingly improved. Bryan at The-Digital-Picture says "Shooting in C-RAW provides a 420 image buffer rating". My Canon R3 is absolutely crushing that now.

Yes, you read that correctly. I am getting almost 600 CRAW images on my R3 now. I repeated it twice and got the same number of 597. I'm most shocked by the SD card numbers because I remember that being in the low 100s before, like 120-130 image range.

I would love to hear what others are seeing. Not that I have much use for a buffer capacity this deep, it does make me wonder if writing to dual cards will be more practical now. I'll have to test that later. Heck, these could have been the same numbers everyone had before and I'm losing my mind. But I don't think I am. I could never just hold down the shutter for almost 20 seconds in CRAW!

Curious if anyone else has noticed this beside me and I haven't seen it discussed on here. I'm using an RF100-400 on my EOS R and it seems after a short time the lens seems to be putting off a hot plastic odor for lack of a better way of putting it. Has anyone else noticed this happening with their lens? I'm wondering if I'm going to run into a problem with it? It's not very old and I haven't used it much. It would of course be just my luck........

I've been in the market for G5X II. Anyone hear anything about when it's coming back? Is it coming back? Should I just bite the bullet and look at used? I reached out to Canon USA, they were no help at all.

So frustrating, I tolorate my M6 II, but I need something smaller when I travel and I HATE using my cell phone.

Long time lurker around here (I blame all of you for my RF glass addiction), thought I should join up and share something cool I made.

I got frustrated trying to mount my 'fancy' 600mm lens to a tripod, and I even at times struggle to find a good grip on the lens without twisting the focus ring when I shoot. So I got busy with my CAD software and my 3D printer and made a lightweight tripod mount for it. I make it sound soooo easy...(please don't notice the 27 iterations sitting on my bookshelf). It's not the fanciest thing out there, but it works, it doesn't weigh much and there is no 'canon tax' on it.

It almost defeats the purpose of the concept of a light super-telephoto lens with IS, BUT when you need it, it won't take up much space in the camera bag or weigh it down.
I think I've got a winner here.

If I upgrade from a 7DMkII to a R7 and use my EF Extender & 100-400 IS II am I still restricted in the number of usable AF points.? I am assuming using eye focus is not possible?
I do not see any detail on this in the R7 user guide unlike the 7DMkII or 5DMkIV manuals which cover this topic in detail.

Just picked up a Canon EF 20mm f2.8 second hand nearly mint condition in box for my R6 and loving it so far but it clicks when I adjust the aperture. I’ve had a fair few EFS, EF RF lenses and never noticed any do that before.

It seems to work and It is a 30yr old lens design. Just wondered if anyone else has experience with a copy and if it was normal? Thanks in advance.

Hi all. I'll buy Canon R6 but just read some hdmi output problems (for me),wanna just ask to all and then buy. I'll use the camera for video shooting and need to do this setup; There'll be a director's monitor with hdmi connection and also i have to use the camera from camera's lcd and record it to camera sd card. I read some comments that when the camera send clean hdmi video to director's monitor, recording to sd card in camera but i cant see anything on camera lcd screen. Or using both lcd screen and the director's monitor same time (has an image with camera display) but no sd card record. Is it R6's feature or not? Thanks for read, i'll buy the camera after your replys.

A new optical formula patent application from Canon has been approved in the form of a Canon RF 100-600mm f/8-11 IS STM. As we have seen with the Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM, Canon isn’t afraid of developing and releasing slower lenses. Canon has admitted to working on more of these types of lenses for the RF mount.

What I found amazing is that it took a year and 10 days since announcement to be that popular

It explains why Nikon & Canon are not spending any more R&D resources to further develop future dSLR bodies, lenses & accessories while still manufacturing existing SKUs based on demand.

Go easy on me, I did this for fun. Getting into bird photography, I acquired a 600mm F4 IS II and a 1.4X and 2.0X vIII Converters. I really enjoy the set. Of course I saw the Fro Knows Photo YouTube video saying Teleconverters are bad (mostly). So I decided to run some tests. But I also came across the TellPlus 3.0X converter on ebay and figured hey why not try it.

Location: So at Great Falls National Park there You can view the Falls from The East or West river banks. It's humorous because you sort of look across at the people on the others side. They are approximately 550' away. And there was his blond guy who looked a little like me. And he was wearing Sunglasses with a RayBan Logo.

Shooting: Shooting with a Canon R5 and Canon EF to RF converter. Manual with Auto ISO, f4 (or widest Aperture) and 1/2000. All Focusing was AF. I shot about 10 photos of each combo and picked the sharpest.

Post Processing: I cropped the photo to just his head, and then uprezzed the photo so all were the same 2000 pixels wide.
