I believe the weight (and price) difference can be explained by ef 50 1.2 having a great deal of aberration, while the RF is nearly perfect.

The difference in optical quality, especially wide open, between the EF and the RF is day and night.
Sony 1,2/50? More visible vignetting and less sharpness.
There is always a price to pay, miracles don't exist - unless price doesn't matter at all.

I’m wondering whether these VCM lenses are omitting any significant (electromagnetic) radiation , being held close to the head when taking photos. Or is this negligible, who knows and most people aren’t interested I guess… I remember something from the launch of the first VCM lenses about warning for people with pacemakers (and that should usually be a longer distance from the lens), but maybe I’m wrong.
I’d prefer the modern nano USMs anyway, and especially for a 85mm, standard or L lens. Unfortunately the STM in the lower budget 85 f2 also sucks IMO, as Dustin Abbott said in his review, it would have been much better with a nano USM.

A lot of people have a mobile phone glued to their heads, so I would not worry about the electromagnetic radiation from holding a camera with a VCM lens in front of your head.

So aside from the radiation question, only VCM is the future, has no disadvantages and nano USM will be gone soon? Or is it just a question of costs

I think multiple types of ‘AF motor’ will coexist, depending on the type of lens, size of the lens elements that need to be moved, costs etc.

I guess “don’t get access to 3rd. party” lenses was ordained by the goddess Kwanon in something similar to the 10 commandments. “Only make dark lenses that no keyboard warrior wants”, “Only make 24MP flagship cameras”, “Only make wide angle lenses that need stretching to fill the corners” are some of the other commandments.

I was really hoping we will get an RF 85 1.4 USM IS, and / or even 1.8 ISM IS, with lens stabilization and not just Sensor stabilization. I think it makes a difference at this focal lens with longer shutter speeds … but ok, it’ll be VCM and no IS. Hopefully pricing won’t be totally crazy.
The 85 f2 isn’t worth it for me, carrying an extra portrait lens (for macro 100 f2.8 USM), with f2 just not being enough for why you’d want an 85, and the slow STM in there is a pain really. The old EF 85 f1.8 USM is lightning fast in comparison; just a little less sharp but with much nicer rendering, too.

If they don't make much sacrifices in IQ, I doubt it would fit in the same body as the existing VCM line up even without IS.
If they are making it larger, then I sure would hope that it comes with IS, at 85mm, IBIS would start to show limitations compared to OIS.

Yes, lens IS would help in this case I guess. And, maybe they do manage to keep it fitting in the same body as the existing lineup, by making heavy use of software corrections for IQ… hm
Let’s hope for the best, I’d really want a new great RF 85 L as a successor to the EF 85 f1.4 IS

Is anyone replacing their 85 1.2 or using it in conjunction with the 1.2? Part of me wishes this would've came out before the 1.2 so I'd have a smaller set of travel primes.
