Non-L however.... it won't of course have all the fancy stuff but then again, why should it if it doesn't cost too much?
The current 400F5.6 is affordable.... And my bet is that there is a substantial market for a quality slower lens than the current F4 monsters that cost upwards of $10,000. In comparison, $2500 would be a steal!

An updated 400F5.6 would cost less than the new 100-400, be L quality, and have much superior optics to the 100-400 version 2. I would get one in a heartbeat.

I seriously doubt that! A tiny little bit better ... maybe 102% optical performance, 80% price.
Basically the 100-400/2 has really killed the need for a 300/4 or 400/5.6. A 500/5.6 or 600/5.6 (DO?) L IS would be of some interest, but would certainly be out of "easily affordable territory".
