Waiting to hear more about this camera and some of the features. Hopeful it may be packed with more 1D/5D style features rather than Rebel line, but guess we'll find out in a week...

I wonder how they think they´re going to impress customers with all that medioker 24Mpx sensor without DPAF, with pathetic framerate and battery life.
Canon do something! Get us some PFAF optimized device, or high resolution or high FPS one, or something advanced. Not M3….

15-45 or 18-150?

My thoughts are as follows...

15-45 is wider, smaller, and probably only $100 USD more with the body bundled. It's also sharp.

18-150 is obviously longer focal length, larger and probably ~$600 USD, but we don't know what kind of bundle discount it'll get it. Also it may be nano-USM; it's a logical candidate for nano-USM just like the 18-135.

Other thoughts?

If the 15-45 is the current EF-M 15-45 - fuhgeddaboutit. The feedback on the lens quality is not good. Best to use the EF-M 18-55. Yes we miss that 3mm diff on the wide end.

So, EF-M 18-55 or EF-M 18-150? Let's assume the 18-150 works as well as the 18-55mm, otherwise we're all back to the EF-M 18-50 and 50-200mm solution. Then it's a matter of user preference and can you live with a longer lens on the camera as the default lens? No idea how long the 18-150 is - maybe it's it's only another 1/2 inch and it's not a big deal to the teeming masses and 18-150 is the way to rock.

Photozone's Imatest results from the lens are impressive.

Would appear the copy they tested is sharper than the EF-M 18-55 IS STM.

What complaints are levied against the 15-45; curious.

I've heard the generic comments regarding plastic mount, which I personally prefer as it makes for lighter, cheaper optics.

We must be reading different reviews.
They say "The Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 STM IS may not be their most glorious offering but it is actually a quite decent lens.... The Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 STM IS competes against its in-house mate, the Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS. We haven't tested the latter formally yet but it is, most likely, the better lens both optically and especially mechanically"

So how come you think it is sharper according to photozone - they haven't even tested the 18-55....

And they only gave it 2.75 stars

I really hope they do better with the M5, but somehow I doubt it. Canon is increasingly seeming "too little, too late" in the video department.

FWIW, the first line of that Japanese site says "According to overseas (i.e. outside Japan) sources...".

Which is to say, we may be getting ahead of ourselves here. (I'm really looking forward to using the 11-22 lens on a body with a viewfinder, so I'm as overworked as everyone else...)

Now eoshd video guy says 80d video quality is good. He was very critical about specs when Canon announced 80d. Unlike dpr and other reviewers, he buys his own gear for reviews (according to him) and refuses to take free gear.

"The 1080p of course could be better, this is Canon after all. But the skin tones, colour science, codec, rolling shutter performance and low light are all very nice indeed - much better than most of the 4K cameras out there in fact and much better than Sony. The image upscales well to 4K on my LG DCI 4096 x 2160 display.

In fact overall detail appears much higher than any Canon DSLR before it, way better than the 60D and 70D. It looks like the GH2 on many shots especially those at closer focus distances. Check out the 1080p frame grab below. It is much better than when I first tried the camera, maybe Canon did a tweak.

The 3x crop mode with 1:1 sensor output (full pixel output of a cropped region) delivers absolutely superb image quality with no moire or aliasing."

They just do it ..because everyone else do it... but eos m5 while will be better then eos m3 - it will not be anything like most people dream for. It will be more on dissapointment side..

no 4k, no new decent lenses, no weather sealing, no 50/60 p vfull hd video, no pdaf... just a better eos m3.

Canon is NOT serious about the EOS M line because the ILC market is NOT serious about mirrorless. When the latter changes, the former will, too. At that point, expect FF MILCs, a broader array of dedicated lenses, etc. Until then, i bet i'm right that your disappointment will continue.

Nothing wrong with that as a business strategy.

Canon is the leader, of the ILC market...and has been for >13 years. They're also highly innovative, certainly if you gauge that by patents awarded. Mirrorless is a small segment of the market which Canon dominates, so why should they strive to alter the status quo? Rather, it makes sense for them to be ready if the market should undergo a paradigm shift…and the EOS M represents that readiness.

I know what you are saying Neuro, but another way to look at it is that Canon is very serious about the MILC market. They have seriously studied the market and very carefully balanced their investment with anticipated returns.

lw: Not sure what point you are trying to make, but any company that is a "leader and innovator" but ignores the realities of the marketplace is destined for bankruptcy. There is an incredibly long list of products that were innovative at the time they were released, but there was inadequate and overly optimistic analysis of the market. Usually, that means that the original innovator goes out of business, while another company waits in the wings perfecting the product and targeting the market. Then, after others have made the initial investment and done the initial development, the company can swoop in, stick a picture of a half-eaten apple on the product and everyone applauds them as being innovative, when really, all they did was figure out how to match the market to the product.

So yeah, you are correct, there is nothing wrong with that as a business strategy.
