"BIRD IN FIGHT ONLY -- share your BIF photos here"- nice gifs!
Are you sure you posted it on the right forum?!
I think it unnecessary to have separate BIF and Portraits threads. The first post in this Portraits thread says: ‘The main idea of this topic is that the bird is clearly the main part component of the picture and that it is not a bird in flight or small bird on large tree or group shot ... ‘That would exclude many of the shots subsequently posted here.

Midwest United States
Northern Cardinal (only cropped...the morning sunlight was great); M6 MkII with adapted EF 70-300II.

Lots of detail here without even trying; yet another reminder that photons are all that matters.

...presumably experienced observers here can explain whether or not the rather large dark cavity in the center of its abdomen is 'normal'?

A quick check of my own cardinal pics...I've not seen this before (I think).

I was sitting on a bench today and noticed these guys have a pattern getting down to a small water source: this one was very worried by my presence and made it branch by branch, leaf by leaf getting lower and lower (as I did:)). I missed the moment when it landed in the water because it landed behind of much bigger Red-vented Bulbul...
