Two New Lenses, Including an RF 85mm f/1.4L VCM Coming September 9

My theory has always been, that the primary reason for Canon to make the R5C, was because they needed a portable/compact and "affordable" 8K videocamera for their VR180 lenses/ecosystem (where 8K/highres is important). So yes, I totally agree. C50 doesn't sound like an R5C replacement from what we have heard so far.
Replacement as in direct replacement, no. But replacement as the entry level Cinema camera. Most entry level pro Cinematographers do not shoot 8k video

I secretly hope that 11-55 will be aps-c and not FF. 2.8 all the way

This would be amazing! If it were reasonably compact, light and with IS for APS-C. It would be an outstanding upgrade to the legendary EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. If it manages to have the same level of IQ improvement that newer RF lenses have had vs their 20 year older counterpart it would be an instant hit.

I fear the price tag would be north of $1K for sure. Still, it would replace both the Sigma RF 10-18mm F2.8 and the RF 18-50mm F2.8 with IS. So, I'd expect the price to be in the ballpart of (probably higher than) the combined prices of both Sigmas. You'd loose 1mm on the wide side, but gain 5mm on the long end for a FF equiv of 17.6-88mm. The more I type about how great I think it would be, the more unrealistic it sounds... and the higher the the expected price tag gets :ROFLMAO:

I still think it will be a huge cinema lens. 11-55 APS-C would be too bold for Canon and FF would be even crazier. Just look at the 15-35 2.8, its like a brick. This new lens would have to be much bigger with any decent aperture range.

I keep reading “replacement” for the R5C but don’t think the article author understands what replacement means.

How can a 4K camera (even from a 6K sensor) that may not shoot photos replace a hybrid 8K hybrid camera.

That’s like saying the C80 is a replacement for the R5C. They are very different things.

I shoot 8K immersive 180 footage for Vision Pro with my R5C , can I buy this replacement camera and do the same?

Doesn’t seem like it. So how is it a replacement ?
If the rumored specs are true, the C50 will be a 6K camera from a 7K sensor. And it will shoot 32MP stills but with no mech shutter.

That plus the form factor makes it a FX3 competitor. But I agree not a R5C replacement. R5C is a true photo/video hybrid.

C50 is clearly a video centric camera first with basic photo capabilities. The absence of EVF and mech shutter makes it pretty limiting for stills.

I also own the 35mm F1.8. I usually use it for landscapes or as a walk around lens and it performs well. Of course, I am not shooting "fast" with it. I´d love to add a fast prime though for family shots/ everyday play and so on and so forth. I'll probably start with the 50mm F1.4 VCM. I rented it recently and I absolutely loved it (not the price tag in Germany though). The 50mm F1.2 is great too, but don´t usually shoot f1.2 and the weight concerns me. VCM lenses are a great compromise for me.

I would love to know why you are not shooting fast? Thanks!

With "not shooting fast" I don't mean the aperture or the shutter speed, I mean the use case. As of now, I don´t have kids yet (first one is the on the way) and my nieces and nephews all live in the states. So, family events are usually with my dad, uncles, in-laws and so on and forth. There is not a lot of fast movement involved e.g. a kid running towards you or something. I do shoot with fast F2 aperture at family dinners and such, just not fast moving subjects. Therefore, the slower AF motors of the 35mm F1.8 and 85mm F2 work just fine for me. Last year at a wedding of good friend of mine, I realized those two lenses don't work well in low light or situations where quick AF is essential. (Don't worry, I wasn't the paid photographer, I just shot for fun) So I realized, for quick moving subjects and occasions, I would need/ want a different, "faster" (in terms of AF) lens. For my wedding (actually for the week family was in town) I rented the RF 28-70mm F2 (which is amazing, but too heavy) and for a different friends wedding this year I rented the RF 50mm F1.4 (this time I was the main photographer) and I realized there is a huge difference between the VCM and the STM lenses. So, "fast shooting" (which I do e.g. for soccer teams) works great with my L zoom lenses, not so much with my fast prime STM´s. That's why I want an F1.4 VCM. In the meantime, I decided to get the RF 50mm F1.4 and keep the 85mm F2 because of the .5macro and close up abilities.

Because the word replacement does not mean equal. Never has been interpreted as "equal" in every sense. The R5C will most likely be discontinued. You replace your vehicle, home or anything, the replacement never has to be equal in every aspect.

Same as those on the C70, which are for the EF-EOS R 0.71X Mount Adapter. This suggests it's a Super 35 sensor.

With no EVF and a Super35 sensor this is not a R5C replacement. It's an alternative.
The R5c will be discontinued. You purchase or trade in your vehicle, you purchase another home, they are replacements. The word replacement does not mean equality.
