What else will they do with that 18MP FF Sensor?

Would be a shame to see it go in just one camera. Maybe this will give us the "split" 5D that's been discussed: an "entry-level" 18MP FF, plus a high MP direct competitor to the upcoming Nikon D800. Of course, it won't be exactly the same sensor, but a "reduced-performance" variant.

Based on this line from the DPReview (http://www.dpreview.com/articles/5149972341/canon-eos-1d-x-overview):

'Not many people need a 21MP file to begin with, so they're going to love the IQ of this camera and the quality's good enough that those people who do need those huge files will find the images clean enough to use them.'

...I think you could see the 1DX sensor in the 5D3

Why "reduced", didn't the 5D2 have an - if at all changed - slightly improved version of the 1Ds3 sensor, seeing that it was released later?

Or they could split the lines further buy putting a 12mp sensor in the 5D3 for dedicated video quality (dual digic 5 power for af whilst filming) and release a super high mp camera for studio use.

It's not entirely unbelievable considering the 5D2 is renowned for video and the D800 rumored at 38mp.

I think it's going to be 21MP+, especially if Nikon comes with a 36MP camera. The good news is, now that 1D is "out of their way", 5D Mark III is the next pro model to be announced :D

I think they will use this sensor also for the video lineup:

DUAL LINE READOUT:
"The new sensor has 16-channel, dual line readout, compared to 8-channel, single line designs in the previous generation of chips."

LESS MOIRÉ:
"Canon’s all new full-frame CMOS sensor ensures that video footage captured on the EOS-1D X will exhibit less moiré than any previous Canon model, resulting in a significant improvement in HD video quality."

fact is you all have no idea.... so why not stop whining about what will canon do with a camera we don´t even have the slightest clue about (aka 5D MK3)?

you sound like a bunch of kindergarten kids....

oh it´s 38 MP already.. last time i checked rumor was 36MP.... lets see what MP this monster will have next sunday. 8)

I hope there will be a "simpler" DSLR with the 1DX Sensor. When I saw the samples on the .jp page it is a big WOW. If this is to be an "entry"-FF-sized sensor for another DSLR I can imagine the APS-C segment thinning out to just 7D+II and a Rebelxxx .
I'd love the idea of entering the FF world with this sensor provided the image processing is the same.

How much does a 0.5DX cost? ::)

Something like 18MP 51200 native, 6 FPS, 20 AFP, 200.000 exposures, one CF, etc... is it 3300 USD?

Hmmm what if Canon merged the 5DII with the 7D into an entry-level FF line to sit below the X, but using the new sensor? Call it (say) the 8D. Maybe drop the DIGICIV to lower the FPS and AF performance to keep it below the X.

Then the xxD line would resume from where the 7D came in (top-of-the-line APS-C, but with the traditional xxD light weathersealing and good build), the xxxD would be the mid-level (worse AF and build) and xxxxD the entry-level.

I doubt they'd drop the 7D line; more APS-Cs mean more things to sell to the masses, which would probably find the shorter DoF and heavier lenses in FF to be a disadvantage.
I can see the 5D line splitting though.

The 1Ds and 5Dmk2 shared sensors, and manufacturing two different sensors is a pain in the ass. We already have 4 APS-Cs using the same sensor. There's always a chance that they'll make a new sensor, but it seems unlikely.
Tbh im more interested in if these new improvements will trickle down to the APS-C range, where its cheap enough for me to buy :P .
