What to expect on August 21, 2013

First, we’re told by a great source that only PowerShot announcements will take place on the 21st. We’re also told not to expect anything “high end”, nothing like the Sony RX100 II. I would imagine at least a few new PowerShots will have features that go along with sharing photos.

Which brings us to…. as some have pointed out, the invitation shows a cloud and not an EOS, PowerShot or EF logo like most invites. There’s a good chance that this is for the Project 1709 photo management service. You can visit it at www.project1709.com.

I have feelers out to see if anything bigger in the way of an EOS camera is to be announced or showcased. There is always a possibility of a “development” announcement, as that can afford Canon time to actually get a product to market.

More to come…

Imho quite the opposite, considering the marketing disaster for (pre-)announcing some products (1dx, 24-70mk2 as far as I remember) and actually delivering them it seems to me Canon is very shy when talking about their next products, plus of course Nikon/Sony are always keen to listen. So I don't see how a development announcement over what they have leaked so far would do anything good for Canon.

How about the announcement of the 5D Mark III firmware update? They delivered it on time (the last day of the promised month IIRC), but received a lot of flak for the long window from announcement to release.

(Off-topic: I updated to that firmware, and its warnings and reduction of support for 3rd-party batteries still tick me off every time I insert a non-Canon battery into the body.)

Why not do a development announcement? If they are in the last mile before launch? Would EOS 1 canonites (mostly pro's) give a possibility to plan on (upcoming investments in new gear? when does budget process usually take place? with us - I am working at an FBO - it is at about this time...) But, we'll see.

The ironic thing is that ML came out with their own firmware extension update that improved video 10x more than the new firmware from Canon, so much so that most video people reverted back to the old firmware just so they could use the ML extension instead. So after waiting on the edge of my seat for months for the Canon firmware I actually ended up dumping it just a couple weeks or so later! (that said the f/8 AF must be awesome for those with f/8 combos that work with it and hdmi clean out is still useful for some)
