From Vincent Laforet

NAB 2010 kicks off tomorrow – and you should expect some pretty fantastic announcements from a wide variety of companies. I know of quite a few – but am sworn to secrecy for at least another 12 hours or so.

For those of you who could not make it out to the city of sin for this conference – know that a lot of the buzz here surrounds the HD DSLR and “convergence” worlds. Very exciting times. I can’t wait to share a lot of what I know with you very shortly. Zeiss, RedRock Micro, Lite Panels, Marshall Electronics, Canon and many many more have some very exciting announcement to make tomorrow!

Well, to truly benefit from a mirrorless design, they would have to reduce the flange focal distance like Pansonic/Olympus did when they removed the mirror from 4/3s to get µ4/3s. But just as with µ4/3s that would still allow the existing EF(-S) lenses to be compatible via an adapter, but would still mean a new system.
Sooner or later such a system will be introduced by Canon, it just depends on how long Canon will try to sell classic (but comparably small body) DSLRs to the enthusiast consumers that want better image quality, but that would rather not have the bulk of a DSLR. For these folks, µ4/3s is extremely attractive, and sooner or later the manufactures of the classic systems will begin to feel the hit in market share in particular in the entry level market segment.

    Lets hope that:
    a) the new mirrorless Canon system is fully compatible (via an adapter without optics, not like the adapters they offered to convert FD lenses to the EF mount) with the existing EF system. I guess they will be smart enough to do that.
    b) They improve the AF protocol for contrast AF not only for the new mirrorless mount, but also for the existing EF(-S) mount. That should make the movie crowd happy. If they offered rechipping of existing lenses to support this new protocol that would also be strong signal to any EF followers that Canon is taking care of their investment.
    c) They make the sensor size for their mirrorless system APS-C

  2. While Idiots around the world spend stupidly their time twittering and blogging about convergence (and only few get tons of bucks to teach this stupid word to others like Laforet does) Olympus and Panasonic does what Canon should have done a long time ago: A freaking Camcorder that works like a full freaking camcorder :P…

One more mark to: Canon you are frigging wasting time·$%*!
