Canon Profits Grow in 2014 on Equipment Sales & Reshuffling of Camera Business

Canon Profits Grow in 2014 on Equipment Sales & Reshuffling of Camera Business

TOKYO, April 24 (Reuters) - Canon Inc inched up its 2014 operating profit target on Thursday due to strong sales of office copiers and printers in the first quarter, and said a reshuffle of its camera line-up had also helped boost margins.

Canon said office equipment sales rose by 9.7 percent in the first quarter, helping lift operating profits by 51 percent to a higher-than-expected 82.6 billion yen ($806.76 million).

Camera sales, however, fell by 22 percent year-on-year in the quarter, as the world’s biggest camera maker struggled with the prevalence of high-quality smartphone cameras and a saturation in the high-end, single-lens-reflex camera market.

Chief Financial Officer Toshizo Tanaka told an earnings briefing that sales of pricier compact cameras had actually increased after Canon adjusted its camera production and line-up in the first quarter to meet customers’ demand for more sophisticated products.

But he said a recovery would take time.

“Determining whether we can achieve the growth we are hoping for will take some time,” Tanaka said. “Things are getting better in China and Europe, but it will take a while to see whether that will continue.”

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Coming in October

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Coming in October

Sigma is planning to announce a 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art series lens at Photokina with availability coming in October of 2014.

There has been no word on the possible 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art or 135mm f/1.8DG HSM Art lenses. I think both the 85 and 135 would be more highly desired than a 24mm prime, though if it’s as good as the 35mm or 50mm, we’ll take it anyway.

Review: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens

Review: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art series lens. As you’re probably used to reading, this lens is a stellar performer and nearly as good optically as the Zeiss 55 f/1.4 Otus, which costs 4 times as much.

Says Bryan
“While I will dock a few points from this lens for occasional AF inconsistency, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is now the overwhelming favorite in the 50mm field. This lens delivers excellent image quality, has a beautiful design and for what you get, a very attractive price. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is the easy 50mm choice for those with a moderate budget.”

LensRentals.com Updates Damage Waiver Plans, adds Theft Coverage.

LensRentals.com Updates Damage Waiver Plans, adds Theft Coverage.

Meet Lenscap and Lenscap+
The Lenscap protection plans are optional add-ons that limit your liability in the case of a covered event causing damage or total loss of products on your rental.

Simply, if a covered event occurs to equipment protected by a Lenscap plan, your liability is limited to the lesser of the cost to repair the equipment or 10% of the replacement cost.

What is Covered by the Standard Lenscap Plan?
Effectively, the standard Lenscap protection plan replaces the pre-existing Lensrentals Damage Waiver program and covers accidental damage to our equipment as long as you can return it to us. It even covers bear attacks. In the case of damage, your liability will never exceed 10% of the replacement cost of the damaged equipment, no matter how expensive the repair actually is.

What is Covered by the Lenscap+ Plan?
Lenscap+ offers the same protection as the standard plan for accidental damage to the equipment, but additionally protects you against certain situations that make it impossible to return the equipment that you rented.

Was the equipment stolen? You’re covered. Is it at the bottom of the ocean after it fell overboard? You’re covered. Did it get sucked up in a tornado? You’re covered. Did it fall off an aircraft (seriously)? You’re covered.

Just like with the standard Lenscap plan, your liability is limited to 10% of the replacement value of the covered equipment.

Canon Hong Kong Announcement April 24, 2014

Canon Hong Kong is announcing something on April 24, 2014. I think it’s safe to say it won’t be a white EOS camera this time.

The text in this teaser says: “Beauty lies not in objects, but in the interaction between the shadow and light created by objects.”

I wouldn’t expect anything too earth shattering, as these regional announcements are generally minor.

New TS-E Lenses for Photokina [CR2]

New TS-E Lenses for Photokina [CR2]

We’re told to expect two new Tilt-Shift lenses for Photokina 2014 in September. One will be a direct replacement of the TS-E 45mm f/2.8 and the other will be a longer focal length, however it won’t be a direct replacement of the TS-E 90mm f/2.8.

Both of the new tilt-shift lenses will get the L designation. We’re also told that the new tilt-shift lenses will have a unique feature, though at the moment we don’t know what that might be.
