A Summary of Sigma Lens Rumors

A Summary of Sigma Lens Rumors

A summary with the probability of upcoming Sigma lenses has appeared on sigma-rumors.com. Most of the lenses mentioned have been written about here in the past. Sigma’s focus over the last 2 years has been on high quality and affordable offerings, there’s no reason to think that won’t continue.

The most likely lenses to appear next would be:

  • 24mm f/1.4 DG ART
  • 85mm f/1.4 DG ART

Both of these lenses have a chance to appear at Photokina in a couple of months. I’d say the 85mm f/1.4 is a given, but the 24mm f/1.4 could fall to later this year or early 2015. With Zeiss expected to announce their Otus 85mm f/1.4 in September, Sigma could play spoiler with an optically great lens with autofocus at a much cheaper price.

The other lenses according to the site with the highest probability of happening are:

  • 24-70mm f/2 DG ART
  • 300-600mm f/? OS Sport

We’ve heard about both of these in the past, and I’m inclined to believe the supertelephoto zoom is definitely something Sigma is developing. The 24-70mm f/2, I’m not 100% sure on. If Sigma wants to differentiate themselves from the Canon and Nikon offerings, then such a lens would do the trick.

Video Review: Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

Kai from DigitalRev has completed his video review of the brand new Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens. This $299 lens for APS-C shooters seems to be getting a lot of praise, most of which is based around its extremely affordable price.

I have used the lens a couple of times and find it to be nearly as good as the EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5, especially as an ultra wide angle walk around lens in cities. Pair it with an EOS Rebel SL1, and you have a pretty good light weight hiking setup as well.

EOS 7D Mark II Announcement September 5, 2014?

EOS 7D Mark II Announcement September 5, 2014?

In our previous mention of a released date for the EOS 7D replacement, we speculated it would be some time during the week of September 8, 2014. However a couple of people have said the embargo will actually end at midnight on Friday, September 5, 2014 EST. Photokina begins about 10 days later in Cologne, Germany.

This sounds reasonable, as it allows the week of booth setup in Germany without trying to hide marketing material like signs and banners.

The Always Hidden Camera at the World Cup

Northlight has been sent an image showing an always covered Canon camera. Apparently this photographer is always in the exact same spot on the side of the pitch. The camera is always covered in the white tarp, while no other camera is. It’s definitely a Canon as you can easily tell it’s a Canon lens.

We have been told numerous times that the replacement to the EOS 7D would be at the World Cup going through professional testing. Maybe that’s what’s under the cover.

Microsoft and Canon Sign Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement

REDMOND, Wash., and TOKYO — July 2, 2014 — Microsoft Corp. and Canon Inc. on Wednesday broadened their strategic alliance with the announcement of a broad patent cross-licensing agreement. EOS 7D Replacement & Telephoto Lens in September [CR3]

EOS 7D Replacement & Telephoto Lens in September [CR3]

We’ve been told that NDA/embargo will expire in September for the Canon EOS 7D replacement as well as a new telephoto lens.

Photokina starts on September 16, 2014. So I suspect the embargo date will either be Tuesday, September 9, 2014 or Friday, September 12, 2014. The EOS 5D Mark III was announced on a Friday.

We weren’t given any specs at the time of writing this, or what the new telephoto lens would be. I think everyone is hoping for an EF 100-400 replacement.

Review: Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS

Review: Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS

Bryan over at The Digital Picture has completed his review of the brand new Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS. I think everyone is hoping Canon has finally upped the quality of their L series ultra wide angle zoom lenses.

Says Bryan about the new lens
Canon’s ultra-wide angle zoom lenses have long been very good performers. I have them and use them, but I was never overly excited by them – until now. The focal length range is not new and the max aperture in this range was already covered by another high quality lens. But, the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS USM Lens adds one critical feature – image stabilization. That feature alone gives this lens a huge value to me. Equally or more exciting is the image quality being delivered by this lens. If prime-lens-grade corner-of-the-frame image quality is something you appreciate in your ultra-wide angle lens, you are going to love this lens. Add a state-of-the-art AF system and the 16-35 f/4 L IS becomes a must-have lens… read the rest of the review
