Canon will announce the PowerShot V1 in the Near Future

I wonder if the body form factor puts some people off as it doesn't look like a "traditional" camera. It is rare that it is compared to the Sony ZV-E10 for instance. Maybe the V1 will change that. Hopefully better than the Nikon 1 V1.
well, the ZV-E10 has interchangeable lenses and is in a totally different price bracket too.

I think this camera has a messaging issue. Traditional media views it through the lens of a traditional camera and judges its merits by traditional camera metrics. So automatically the majority of them are going to scoff at its merits because it doesn't fit how they use a camera. Canon can't even get any of the traditional camera reviewers to even cover the V10, instantly dismissing it as a toy camera. Youtube is also a weird demographic. All the massive YT channels stick to a phone. You watch YT and you think everyone is using a Sony cam like an a7R4 for vlogging when statistics show they're not.

The people I've talked to love the form factor (my coworkers are generally Gen Z with millennials aging out or moving into managerial positions), but the issue is how to get the video into a state for social media. On a phone, you record in the app (like TikTok) and then apply a bunch of filters, stickers, effects, etc. Edit on the timeline of the app. But with the Canon, you have to transfer the video to the phone which takes time. The traditional way of copying the video to a computer and then using a NLE editor produces the best quality and results. But in a social media world, it's perceived as inauthentic. And it takes a lot of time when people want to shoot something out super quick.

And then there's trying to satisfy the traditional camera world but also satisfying the social media world. Like 4K is a "must" for the traditional camera world. But it's not for the social media world. What the social media world needs is vertical resolution. so a 1080x1920 works great. So with a 4K camera, you can take that 3840x2160 and crop it down to 1080x1920. But it's not optimal. 1920x1080 only gives you 1080 vertical resolution. The Canon does do 1080x1920 vertical videos and 2160x3840 vertical video which is pretty cool. Set the camera to FHD 1920x1080 and turn the camera to record horizontal 1080x1920 videos. It saves on battery, produces less heat and looks great on social media/phones. Hmm, now I have test if my R5ii does vertical 1080x1920... I never actually tried.

And there's the whole matter of carrying two things. It's like if you have a MB and an iPad. super annoying. It's why I have a Surface Pro. But if Canon can somehow smooth out the transfer process, it would smooth out the entire workflow. An AirDrop or Quick Share method for the Canon world. I know

Canon Patent Application: Power Zoom Ultra Wide Angle Lenses

I wonder if only a 2× zoom range would be enough to justify an addition to the "Z" range (including compatibility with the power zoom adapters)...
The 10-20mm already has a 2× zoom range but starting at the much more impressive 10mm (albeit at f/4).

Personally, I am hoping for something like a 15-45mm f/2.8 – that would create enough separation between the existing lenses to justify the new lens and a zoom range that would justify use with a servo. (Similar to the separation between the 24-70 f/2.8 and the 24-105 f/2.8 Z.)

That being said, if I could only get one more "Z" lens, my vote would be for one in a super-tele range like a 200-600 or 300-800 f/8.

Looking for a remote microphone for my R5

I have a Deity V3 shotgun mic, but when I'm shooting video of my daughter playing you can hear the lens adjusting in the video, and it drives me nuts. I need to get a remote mic of some kind that I can just place a couple feet away from the camera so I don't get that noise. Obviously I'm not going to attach a mic to my daughter, so just something that I can place nearby that connects wirelessly is what I'm looking for....

Canon announces 410 Mpx FF sensor

I’m wondering why it’s still a problem to make something like 48x36mm sensor at least? Or even 56x56.
might be less that its a problem and far more to do with a complete lack of lenses that would work with the larger sensor, its a huge aspect that holds back medium format cameras and lens availability is the main reason ARRI made the Super 35 instead of a new full frame or LF camera.

How to remove condensation from the lens barrel?

Hi everyone,
I would like to know if you know a way to prevent all this condensation from forming on the body of the photographic lens:
Login to view embedded media I was using an anti-condensation band as you can see in the photo, I put it on the lens hood, but unlike last time, yesterday a very high amount of condensation formed on the body of the lens which I then dried before putting it in the bag and before closing the lens barrel so that it did not remain trapped inside it.

but is there a way to prevent it from forming on the barrel body too? Do you put something on it?

Of course, there were lots of cats as well :) The third pics (I call it "creepy eyes") was the idea of the cat. I was taking pics of the family dog. Apparently, the cat jealous, walked up to the lens and sat down in front of it :)
Pic 1 & 4 and 5 is a very shy cat. She didn't like the camera and would walk away as soon as she saw me with it. But I did get it :)

How fast does your R5ii wake from sleep?

How do you define 'gone to sleep'? It depends on your settings, but the display can shut off before the camera actually goes to sleep. Could it be that in your 'short period of inactivity' situation, the camera is has not powered off but rather the display has just shut off?

View attachment 222110
No, I did all my tests with the camera powering ‘off’ after the ‘Auto power off’ time, as I assumed that’s what @AlanF meant with ‘Wake from sleep’.

Samyang officially launches the AF 12mm f/2 RF-S

If this and other IQ points were true, I guess this could become a great astro lens.

Personally, I haven't learned yet to work well with anything wider than 24 mm FF eq.
So maybe I won't be in the market for this one.
It seems like the wider the angle (ultra-wide) the more difficult it becomes. I read your post and think I know what you mean. I collect old m42 lenses, mostly Takumars. The widest I have is 28mm. I'd really like a 24mm and a 15mm. I just haven't found I need them. :giggle: Of course, collecting isn't about need, I guess.

However, if this was a ff lens, I might bite. I have an R. Not sure it has a crop mode. If it does, the price is right.

SIGMA 16mm f/1.4 and 23mm f/1.4 DC DN Shipping January 23rd

I feel sorry for you.
That’s nice. I’m not the one who can’t understand clearly written descriptions, is clueless about what comprises a RAW file, and keeps making successively more egregious excuses for my foolishness. But you keep right on embarrassing yourself. It’s mildly amusing.

BCN Awards 2025: Sony and Nikon make Significant Gains

the M200 yes, can do clean HDMI out - I used the M6II has a webcam - it was very good. I'm not sure how good the M200 will be because it does not have DPAF, if you are fixed focus and do not move a lot (or F/8 and be there), it should be fine. The M6 II was fantastic because it had eye AF combined with DPAF, so no matter where I was in the frame, my eyes were focused in the webcam stream. an APS-C sensor for a webcam is a million miles better.
The M200 has DPAF, it is essentially an M50 Mark II without the EVF and some firmware crippling.

R5mk2 Freeze

Sure, except I've never had this problem with my R5 or any other digital camera I have owned, and the majority of R5 II users have never had this happen to them. It is rare and hence should be fixable with hardware or firmware. You can live with missing shots at key moments if that is your wish. I doubt many professionals do. I assume you've had this problem with your R5 II and not reported it?
Unfortunately I hve no clue, where to report problems like that.. CPS is more or less unexisting since they change it to a "Company" only Service. To whom should I report Softwareproblems like these?
Furthermore the Problem is quite hard to reproduce.

CF Express Type B for R5II

I got a reply:

We no longer produce or sell Cobalt Memory cards. These cards are currently at end-of-life status.

The Cobalt cards have been replaced with our Gold and Iridium cards.

The key difference between the Gold 4.0 and the Iridium cards is that Iridium cards have a higher sustained write speed, have longer life span. In short they are more durable and lasts longer than Gold cards.

Canon to start charging for using cameras as webcams

I was glad to find David B's post here...I was going to do it myself but didn't quite know where to put it. Canon General is a good place.

I've posted more than once about Canon's 'free' software that enables many of their top tier cameras (going back decades) to be used as simple webcams.

This 'freeware' has worked well for my wife, enabling the repurposing of an old 40D EF-S/10-18 combo that has found use as a webcam for yoga class instruction from home (via Zoom).

[Note added for clarity: the op here has written about the subscription version of this software...]

I mentioned this previously in the context of a previous CR thread about Canon setting up subscription payments for cropping guides:

One additional post in the same thread:

...and quoting from my own post here:

In the end, the marketplace will decide...as it should. As it always does.

I hope Canon's execs make wise decisions.

=====

I was first made aware of the Roman Zipp post (op in this thread) here:

I daresay that arstechnica (one of my favorite sites...along with CR!) has readership numbers that dwarf those of Mr. Zipp and his posts (good as they are).

In fact, I think arstechnica is that rare science and technology webzine that is profitable. Highly profitable.

=====

One of the life's pleasures (fire away!) is reading arstechnica comment sections (smart people)...and the comment section here does not disappoint.

At least one of you reading this right now was, I think, introduced to the word 'enshittification' in a Canon subscription-related post on CR.

In the ars comment section to the article linked above, as well as a very lengthy and more-than-occasionally off-topic-as-usual reddit concerned with Mr. Zipp's original post...the word 'enshittification' is used dozens of times...enough to convince me (I think, for the purposes of discussion)...

...that Canon is deciding poorly when trying to set up a subscription model for their fully-featured webcam software.

Their decision here has set off a firestorm of publicity and criticism, from tech-types that Canon should want as customers.

In other words, the marketplace will decide.

This kerfuffle is not quite a Streisand Effect (not at all, actually), but sort of (in a way).

And for those of you who are unfamiliar with the Streisand Effect, well...in the process of setting up this post, I learned something completely new: The Cobra Effect!

"During the British reign in India there was growing concern about the incidence of cobra bites in Delhi. The governor there decided to offer a bounty for every dead cobra submitted to him. At first this worked well and a large number of snakes were killed for the reward. Gradually though business-minded people began to breed cobras for the income. Once it became apparent that this was happening the same Governor abandoned the reward scheme. This caused the cobra breeders to set all their now worthless snakes free. Thus the frequency of bites rose. So the Cobra Effect happens when a proposed solution to a problem has exactly the opposite impact to that intended."

...fascinating stuff (whether true or not it is a great read ;) ).

=====

Finally, I wonder if the decision-makers at Canon are aware of The Streisand Effect (and things like it). If they are not, then that is part of the problem here.

EDIT: worth a look. Definitely worth a look.
