C-Log Coming to EOS 5D Mark IV Confirmed [CR3]

I need to try to do the same with my 1dx2. I'll probably re-badge it as 5dm4 and send to CPS :)

Trade you your 1DX2 for my 5D4-CLOG? :)

Ideally I would prefer a combination... The 5dm4 has some great features missing in the 1dx2: DPRAW & C-Log.
Now if you look at the new 6dm2, it got a few nice extras as well: tilt screen, continuous AF for stills in LV (not just video), 5-axis video stabilization. Now imagine all this stuff in one camera! I understand it will be hard to bring a tilt screen via a hardware update ;) but the rest could be definitely added programmatically.

Why in the world someone would use a 3rd party software to read RAW files if they really want to get best quality? I asked them this question and got an answer "because we want consistent comparison" for all camera brands. Which is total BS since they look from Adobe's perspective infested with random bugs.
LOL! I asked them exactly the same question.

I also made the - what I consider a very strong - argument that they should use each producers own software - that is much more "consistent" than what they are doing now. This is the software you buy together with your camera. ACR is a personal choice and an add-on the camera producer has nothing to do with.

Falls under the category of, there is none so blind as he who will not see. There are lots of people like that. Then there are those who always knock any company that is most successful.

Jack

Part of the appeal, I assume, is that they can also use the exact same settings for each body (even if the same settings aren't ideal...). There is a risk that they'll be more proficient with one manufacturer's software and the equivalent image on the other side will be processed more poorly through that company's software. Of course, with something like ACR or LR, they can arrive at settings that are ideal for one body and less so for the other, and shrug it off as "same settings, apples-to-apples".
You - correctly - identified the counter argument to why that would not be a good idea. Dpreview uses the term "processed to taste" to underline that their processing is subjective.

Worst advice ever

The big future question is whether amazon and others will start raising prices once they have extinguished all the locals.

Could turn nasty if that applies to food.

I do try to support pro photo supply our local store.

I hear this discussion a lot - but the truth of the matter is; there is always going to be someone who can undercut someone else. This will keep prices low.

That might have been true a generation or two ago when no company or bank was big enough to control the supply of an entire commodity. That has been proven false for many household items nowadays and there is nobody with enough power or inclination to limit those that do other than, maybe, the European courts. Did you know the can your soda comes in costs 50% more than it needs to because JP Morgan has 100% control of the aluminum supply in the USA? How about in a country or two where a single company is given exclusive rights to water supply and that includes all rainfall on your own property?

Country or two... or the state of Colorado, which has a similar law.

To your first point, remember when no one was ever going to be able to compete with IBM? Then Microsoft? Then Google? Now Apple? Or when Walmart was going to be the end of every store and take over all of retail? It's always "different this time", but it never has been.

Same with automation. The Luddites (the actual Luddites) weren't wrong - the new looms were destroying jobs. Diesel farm equipment destroyed jobs. Refrigeration destroyed jobs. Somehow, through it all, people have found ways to stay employed for the most part (though it is very painful for specific people and groups).

Just remember, it's almost never "different this time".

Anything shot with a 77D

Mt Spokane Photography said:
I think the 77D is a nice backup camera, but I'd probably get a 80D refurb for the lower price. My issue is that I've sold all my EF-s lenses and have nothing left wide enough for general use on a crop body.

I hear you, Mt. Spokane! If I wasn't so intent on getting a small Rebel-class body to use as a lightweight travel camera, I would have been at least as happy with an 80D.

Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM

The 100 USM was my first Canon portrait lens years ago, so I attach some nostalgia to it. I have sharper lenses now, but since I was hiking into a location with a studio light, stand and battery pack, I thought I would bring it as a lighweight "bokeh lens" to supplement my trusty 24-105 F/4 IS which would do most of the work.

Like the 85mm sibling, this USM lens sharpens up considerably if you stop down to F/2.5.

Here is a tame image from my shoot. If you want to see more, you can read my blog post: http://www.beyondboudoirphoto.com/blog/2017/7/merrique-nude-in-the-columbia-river-gorge ... or not. Obviously this is NSFW imagery, so consider yourself warned.

All the artsy images with lots of bokeh were taken with the 100 USM at F/2.5. The others were taken with the 24-105 L.

Will Lightroom 6 write CRAW for new 6d2?

Your comparison is ”invalid”... on a couple of points:
If you don't consume gas, electricity, water etc, you don't pay.

Well I've never had a zero bill. There's always some kind of 'service maintenance charge' for a minimum monthly payment.

This whole argument is ludicrous though. Adobe are a commercial company. Of course they want you to pay more!

You either pay the Adobe tax or you go use something else. Complaining about it does nothing.

We can always complain and go use something else. I like LR as long as it's purchasable, but the moment it goes subscription-only is the time I'll be investigating other options.

What are these forums about if not for arguing about things that are, in the greater sense, completely meaningless?

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM on the Way [CR3]

AvTvM said:
Zeiss states with respect to their (manual focus only) ZE 85/1.4:

"Fast lenses of this optical design (without floating elements) shift the focus due to spherical aberration when the f-stop is changed. This phenomenon is especially visible on closer object distances and cannot be influenced. The AF system of most camera models does not respect those characteristics of a lens. The focus is measured and confirmed by the focus indicator as if the lens has been stopped down to f/5.6.
85L has a floating element to counter the focus shift. So does the 35L. Its only the 50L that does not (still no focus shift, when you shoot a lens wide open).

Images of Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Leak

Tamron has always seemed to me to be the third party champ in autofocus accuracy. THK is also good. Sigma has booted it over and over, I've lost count of their recalls and fixes for AF issues. All third party lens makers have at least occasional issues, thinking about the difficulties they face, its amazing how well they work.

Filter shifts focus

YuengLinger said:
Care to share the brand of filter?

What happens when you hold the filter up in front of your eyes and look at things close, middle distance, and farther away? Do you see any strange optical effects?

I wonder how often this happens and we blame AF?

I think B+W has had price drops, especially on the smaller filters, such as 67mm and below.

The filter is branded Monoprice, if you are familiar with them, they are very good for cables and other stuff. This filter was on clearance for about $5.

Now I have tried the looking though it with my eyes and for far away objects the image shifts when I move the filter. I think there is a curvature to the surface.

I'm going to look at the B+H filters now.

Red Flag Alaska 17-2 ( Military jets)

Hi Dave.
Nice series of shots, I didn't realise there were so many variations on the camo schemes. Great to see the Warthog, just enough plane to make a Gatling gun fly!

Cheers, Graham.

The forum has to be redone, What needs to stay?

Labdoc said:
Others may have said this but a like or thanks button would be useful. This is a camera site and folks post pics all the time. I like a lot of what's posted but refrain from posting a comment just to say "great pic". While a dislike button is of dubious utility, a quick way to show you like what you see would be very handy.

I agree.

Adding hyperlinks.

Hi Mt Spokane.
Thanks for that, I did get it working with Neuro's explanation, which seems to be a very abridged version of this explanation.
Just to make sure, I have saved my successful link, Neuro's reply and these instructions to a note which I have emailed to me so I have it wherever I am.
I suppose this will possibly change when the site migrates to the new software, just when I catch up the goalposts move! :)

Cheers, Graham.

Instructions in more Detail

"BEST (For webpages)
For links to webpages, the problem with the above method is that you may have very long unsightly URL address. This is not a problem for links to external video/audio clips as the forum software automatically displays the linked video/audio. Thus for a more elegant webpage link please:
 • Write the text that you want the link to appear as, such as "this link here".
 • With mouse, highlight that text and then mouse click on the the "Insert Hyperlink" button (looks like tiny globe of earth) which will insert small code on either side of your highlighted text like: this link here
 • Copy the URL that you want to link to from the address bar of the other webpage.
 • With mouse, place your curser after the first in the code before yout text, then type "=" sign and then paste your address (Ctrl-V). It should appear as: this link here
 • You are done, the hyperlink will appear when you post/save your post to CheeseForum.org."

Canon 400D (Digital Rebel XTi): Sell, or keep it?

I sold my 400D to a friend with kit lens and 70-300 for about $200. She was happy, I was happy (for the moment).
The thing is I have missed it since. It was my first DSLR, and it served me well in both street and landscape, at beaches and on mountains. So when a friend told me he had two 350D lying around I jumped at the opportunity to take one out for a spin, for old time's sake. Adapted a couple of old M42 lenses that wouldn't work on my 5D onto it and just went out shooting. Got one or two decent shots, but it was just a nice feeling, nostalgia and the challenge of manual lenses on a system not made for them.
I'd say keep it. But I'm a sucker for nostalgia.

And it's nice to bring out at times, just to prove that you can still get great images with only 10.1mp..

Canon RT flashes - PC port triggering & master mode

Jim Saunders said:
So I don't have a PC cable to check for myself, but does anyone know if a 600 or similar set as master, will act as master as per normal (i.e. firing all the slaves) if it (the master) is triggered through its PC port?

Jim
You could do that if you have optical triggers for the slaves but no, not with the IR or radio systems.
