Is the 580ex2 (or 600rt) overpowered? Do you use the features?

You've never tried to shoot into a flash set to E-TTL.. its output disappears as soon as it's near being in-frame. Rim lighting is next to impossible with E-TTL. That's fine - probably not a part of your style, but I often need the flash to fire the same whether or not it's visible in the frame.

EDIT: I should have said that rim lighting with E-TTL is next to impossible at most events. For portraits, I'm sure it's perfectly simple, since your subject isn't moving around.

You are right - I dont take pictures into the flash, but I do rim lighting without a problem. Moving objects are no problem either

Here is one, panned on second curtain

Need First Hand Advise- 200MM IS 2.0L + 1.4 EXIII VS 300MM IS 2.8L

Interesting question.I occasionally use the 300 f/2.8 for portraits if I'm after a particular look, but it's certainly not a "go-to" portrait lens.

If the AF was up to speed with the 200 f/2 with 1.4X this would be a combination well worth considering. I hope someone posts some real world first hand experience with this combo.

A lens you may want to consider is the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8. The newest release has OS (that's Sigma for IS) and really is incredible value.

7D firmware update - wow, could it be?

I would be WOWing if they actually released a real 7D MKII instead of stupid upgrades! We need better bodies!
We need better photographers!

What is wrong with the 7D? And what is so stupid about upgraded firmware? I, and I think countless others with me, would very much welcome some new features. Could give the 7D some extended life for some users.

Always have the strange feeling that the people who are whining about wanting new camera bodies spend more time complaining than they are actually in the field taking photographs...

+1 I agree with you. I'd rather upgrade the firmware in my 7D to increase its potential rather then investing into another "upgraded" body with minor improvements over the previous one. Only the person behind the camera can increase the creativity in their pictures. Not the camera, it's just a tool to help you. Now get out there and take some pictures :)

++1 The 7D is a fine camera that delivers excellent quality photos and is more well rounded than the 5D II if you are looking for a camera that does everything. The body is so good the new 5D III was designed around it! But hey, if the body's not good enough for you, buy a 5D III with the same body for over $2000 more :)

Pics of Kirk L-Bracket for 5D MKIII

WoodysGamertag said:
Maybe I'm a newb. How does this bracket help you take pictures? It seems like a tripod head can hold the camera sideways just fine.

Most tripod heads do allow for a vertical position, but this usually moves the camera way off its position over the center of the tripod, and lowers it as much as 6 inches. So the camera camera & tripod combination is no longer as stable as it could be, or as steady, or at the height of the photographer's eye. And, composition can change substantially. Swapping from horizontal to vertical with an L bracket avoids all that. And of course the heavier & larger the camera/lens the more pronounced the effect. Add a vertical grip, and the problem grows.

Can you live without it? Of course.

600ex-RT...valid reasons to upgrade?

OK! Any discernible improvement in exposure control with the new flash?

Improvement compared to what? Haven't really shot with it yet, though... If there's something specific you'd like me to test, let me know.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Improvement over 580ex & 580exII. You have to monitor the output very closely when using either of these flashes. It would be very welcome if the 600 showed greater exposure consistency than the 580ex & 580exII.

What about T4i/650d ?

"Two new comments received [thanks] about a mid May announcement for the 650D, but as yet, no sign of any invites or scheduled events. If this one has any legs, expect to see some more detailed 'hints' within a week or two.
Both suggest an 'improved' 18MP sensor and Digic 5"

D4 and D800 jump up in price

psolberg said:
Supply vs demand. System error or not, Nikon said the d800 demand was unprecedented. Amazon USA still ranks it #1 camera in sales 26 days after even when sales of the E variant are not factored in. Compare to the 5D3 which dropped to 12th place after just 24 days. Nikon hit out of the park and they know it even before the DXO bombshell.

If it were supply and demand, the price might be going up everywhere. The Demand has far outstripped supply in the USA, but the price has held. Our local small dealer says the Rep told him to expect some in two weeks, but exactly when and how many is unknown. I'm number 3 on the list right now.

How About This Canon?

just make sure the DR, for this landscape style camera, is up there like the D800 and landscape photogs will snatch it up like hotcakes. It wouldn't be a big seller and wouldn't universal as lets say the 5d or the 7d series would be, but for a nitch camera, if they can do it right and have the IQ people in that industry would demand, then why not?

So much to the myth, that Nikon users are happier with their gear.

I'm surprised no one has commented on the D800 issues reported in that thread yet. None of the issues seem major- mostly quality control related opposed to genuine engineering flaws - but the number and variety of issues reported are a bit surprising. I'm sure Nikon will sort them out eventually, but if the extra $500 I plopped down for the 5DIII means that I don't have to deal with nagging issues like this, I'm glad to have paid it.

I gotta give credit to the Nikon shooters though. They aren't freaking out about some minor problems, and are pretty level-headed about it all.

CANON 1DC "crushes the F65, Epic, Alexa in one fell swoop." LOOK HERE!!!

DavidRiesenberg said:
I just love spec sheet warriors.

Are these just "Spec sheet"? Are you are saying that you will pay $15,000 for a camera that only outputs 8-bits (which by way the limits the dynamic range). Why? Because it has "Canon" plastered on it?

$3,000 BlackMajic does 12-bit raw

F3 (with the S-long) is listed at $13,000 on B&H, cheaper than 1DC, and other than 4K, it's a better camera than 1DC in almost every other way.

Have a look at F3 (10-bit) vs C300 (8-bit) dynamic range test

the red epic does bad in the test but the new firmware fixed that

Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC Available for Preorder

HarryWintergreen said:
The trouble with third party lenses is there not being really sharp @2,8. This is exactly what I think the Canon 24-70 f2,8 will deliver: sharpness @2,8 beyond compromises. However, omitting IS is a bit annoying, admitted.

I don't find that to be entirely true. The Sigma 50mm is sharp at f/1.4 and only gets sharper stopped down, unlike the equivalent Canon 50mm f/1.4, which you have to stop down far more to approach the same sharpness. Now these are fixed lenses and the Sigma does have some focusing issues, so it’s not entirely good – but still far better than the Canon. With zoom-lenses the case might be different, but I don’t think it’s a rule. If you look at the review, they state it’s close to “Excellent” even wide open in terms of sharpness.

The Canon 24-70mm II will probably outperform the Tamron, but for twice the price and you probably won’t get any sharp handheld images with a 1/10 shutter speed. The review states that you can get about 50 % sharp photos at that shutter speed with the Tamron.

Oh, thanks for the link, good to know.

.... but someone will tell me what was the card and the price? :'(

looks like the price is bouncing all around once again
Last night the extreme pro card went from about $77 dollars up to around $107
And the 45mb/sec was $30+ then up to around $48

I Just looked at my Adorama cart. I had just left them sit in there so these are the newest prices as of writing this post.

SanDisk 32GB ExtremePRO SDHC Memory Card, 95MB Read Speed
$89.95 $89.95

SanDisk 32GB, Class 10 Extreme Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Memory Card, 45mb/sec
$42.00 $42.00
and now its $38.95 at B&H
one day sale- that's a fairly good price - probably won't get much cheaper.
There is also the 128GB 45MB/SEC for $154.00 ---- While I usually go with the philosophy of more is better 128GB is likely a bit much for most cameras ( presently ) though might not be bad for extra storage on your laptop or tablet hmm.
I didn't purchase them at the higher price & that really would've stuck it to me. :o
It was the suddenness that lead to my temporary disenchantment. ;D

Canon and the Apple in the old days (Dxomark)

Babarous said:
A few years ago, Apple used to make their own propriety CPUs for Macs. Does anyone remember that? Then they had the "brilliant" idea: "why are we competing against Intel" in CPU technology? That's a losing battle. So they dumped their own CPUs and started using the intel chip in Macs.

Canon is in a very similar situation right now. Nikon buys the best sensor from whereever they can find (Sony, Aptina, Renesas) and uses them in their own cameras, concentrating instead on the other aspects of a making a good camera (something that is Nikon's speciality).

Canon, on other hand, (just like Apple was against Intel), is stuck with "competing" in semiconductor technology against electronic companies like Sony (D800 sensor) Renesas (D3s sensor) and Aptina (Nikon 1 sensor). Good luck with that.

This is 100% guranteed a losing battle.

Canon should seriopusly consider this: when upgrading 7D, put the best sensor in it, even if you have to buy it from a third party.

Or stay at the bottom of dxomark for the next several decades ... What's the probability Canon will start beating Sony (who makes 30 million sensors a month) in semiconductor technology? Nill. I actually predict the gap would get even bigger in future.

IMO canon is still hanging on to the idea of the golden days when they were the top dog and will insist holding on to their old ways. The sony/Nikon partnership has already robbed canon from the majority marketshare in many areas. They are still #1 overall in some markets but are no longer over 50% as they were 10 years ago and continue to lose share to the Nikon/Sony tidal wave. Hubris is getting the better of them. They are out-pricing their base and trying to make traditional photographers into Hollywood film makers if they like it or not.

Add to that the increased popularity of Mirrorless which even in its infancy has hugely eroded entry level DSLRs which have been a big profit center for canon and yet they have failed to evolve into this market.

Sony's manufacturing arm which is comparable if not larger than canon's provides Nikon with an effective way to nullify canon's larger size. Sony gets Nikon's IP and expertise in sensor design and more importantly PATENT SHARING. Those two companies are the perfect storm together and I wouldn't be surprised if Sony eventually eats Nikon up they way they did minolta to form the largest camera company in the world by marketshare. that would keep some lights on at canon.

I'm absolutely LOVING the nikon/sony team's work and look forward to future products from those two. It has given canon much needed competition. What a difference a decade makes.

Patent: New Diffractive Optic Patents

Renato said:
I sure hope that this does not intensify in the future. I need the lens, I dont have the money so I buy other brands. I imagine that that the same type of problems have happened to other manufacturers.

What bothers me most is the attitude of the 3rd party manufacturers. They are not interested to rectify these problems (they did not even offer a part exchange towards a working model). So I feel they deserve even more to be 'punished". As far as Canon big white equipment is concerned I will try to find something used when I needed and assuming the price is reasonable. I am an amateur so it is not the end of the world if I don't get an extreme telephoto lens.

Anyone tried using digital crop 10-20 sigmas with FF?

Hi all,

I've done some reading and found that my trusty Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 DC HSM is an EF mount that can work safely on my new FF body (i.e. not like an EFS where the mirror will clang the back element).

It vignettes massively, but creates fun square cropped fisheye style images that seem to be nice economical way to do get that fisheye effect without forking out on a dedicated lens that I'll only use once in a blue moon.

Interested if anyone else is making use of this particular bodge? Or doing similar experiments? Any examples?

Cheers
