Quick & Dirty Review: Canon PowerShot G1 X

BigDaddyM said:
I would have liked in the review to see the shallowest DOF this camera can achieve. Everything you showed didn't isolate anything. My biggest gripe is the slow lens, not size or price.

My next issue would be low light shooting. I would hope that teh larger sensor would help, but then back to the slow lens, I am hesistant to test with my wallet.

However, what you did show looked great.

in low light the G1X works fantastic ¡¡, if you like you can see some exemples on my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/gonzalovidalsoler/

Considering switching to the Nikon D800? Read this first!

I don't think most people will switch anyways (either direction).
I shoot a lot of events, fashion shows etc... and I'm always surprised to see the huge percentage of white lenses given that you read these forums and hear so much talk of switching. In the real world it just never happens no matter how enticing the products on the other side may look. Yes I think the D800 looks sexy on paper, but I'm not about to start my entire studio from scratch on the basis of one camera from Nikon. Besides Canon will probably answer back with a high MP offering as well. It's just a matter of time.

Light leak on 5D3 IS a big issue, and should embarrass Canon

"hit millions of happy users"

you don't really think that there are that many people with 5D Mark III's do you?

In colloquial English millions means lots and lots. No one knows how may 5DIIIs will be sold, but you can bet it will be at least as many as 5DIIs

Um, "millions" can mean literal or figurative. I think in context you should of rather said "a lot" or "thousands" which is more specific and leaves less room for misunderstanding.

Where did you learn English? ;D

England
Ha ha. Brilliant. I cannot speak for where from ramon123 hails, but I do find myself misunderstood by those not of the same British language learning as myself, who often take my words too seriously, ignoring the sarcasm or exaggerated nature and taking everything literally!

Well I'm in the US and I got what he meant without issue. In my part of the country it's a given to not take everything so ridiculously literally. I do remember this one kid from out of state who moved in and he would constantly stop people like every few sentences to correct well, come on, you don't literally mean that now, arrr, ridiculous, could never get the concept that not everything is 100% literal to the bone!
It's Asperger's Syndrome.

You might think so from what I wrote but I'd have to say definitely no. Not one other thing about him even remotely hinted at that in any way whatsoever. (And I myself exaggerated a bit when I said constantly, although he would do it often enough.)

The Last Generation of the Crop Sensor Cameras

I think crop is here to stay, whether it's in a body with a mirror or not remains to be seen. Another poster in another thread pointed out that - If mirrorless is to succeed the digital viewfinder has to step itself up quite a bit to have a clear advantage over the optical viewfinder via the mirror.

APC size is for many reasons not going away, if we do see a natural migration to SLR like mirrorless bodies, APC sensors will probably be used in them. And I really doubt that they are not working on ways to get the tech up to FF par. But, I read somewhere else (don't quote me on where), that current mirrorless tech also has an issue with aperture, I think its restricted to f4. If mirrorless can bridge that gap, chances of it trumping mirrored are raised...

who knows though, sometimes the better tech wins out, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes both can win though. On a certain level, its like the vinyl vs cassette tape vs CD vs mp3. Its a great example actually. CD audio quality is far greater than vinyl, and of course cassette is a dead format. But what do most prefer? An mp3 or itunes track. mp3 compression destroys a lot of audio quality, but its quick and easy and you don't have to worry about scratching it. And then there's vinyl, a format that still lives. People like that crackle of putting the needle to the record. On a certain level, DSLR camera's have that physical and audible click click of the shutter box doing its thing. Theres something pleasing about that sound, reassuring. In one of the video's comparing the mk3 to the d800 they tested the quite function on the mk3 and were almost disturbed by how quiet it was. It didn't feel like you actually took the shot they said. I guess I would fall into this camp of folks that like that sound.

Thoughts on my first real shoot with the 5DIII

Northstar said:
Axil....I've been looking at that 100 macro...are you referring to the L version or are you referring to the less expensive version? or both?

Hey I was talking about the Zeiss 100mm f/2 Makro, although the Canon 100L Macro is an excellent lens and probably the only lens I regret selling. The Zeiss 100mm is absolutely stunning, some of the highest resolving power out there and creates almost a 3D like effect the way it separates the subject from the background.

It's a tough choice, the Canon has AF, IS, and 1:1 magnification and costs 1/2 the price of the Zeiss, which has no AF or IS, and 1:2 magnification. But I think that has a lot to say about the optics of the Zeiss 100, the thing is just insane.
If you can't bring yourself to pay that kind of $ for that focal length, you will absolutely be happy with the Canon 100L. It works great as a portrait lens as well as for Macro stuff and is the only Canon lens with the hybrid IS and it works beautifully, very fun lens.

New monitor

Calibration is NOT a one time job. I didn't have time to do calibration on my display for the last year, and I actually wanted to see what happens if I don't do it for a long time. I can tell that a year later, the change was dramatic (the software allows you to see the "before" and "after" image). "Dramatic" as in "holly cow, that's not possible"! (It was freakishly warm for the last year.)

In fact, if you squint, you can see slight changes from month to month.

On the other hand, if you want a general purpose monitor and don't do critical photo editing, just don't buy a hardware calibrator.

(I have a NEC 2690 WUXI2, which is like a 5D2 of displays.)

5D MrkIII service notice - not really a problem but we'll inspect it free

RunAndGun said:
Maybe I'm just weird, but I never use the top LCD. Ever. I make/confirm adjustments with the rear display(or in the VF if applicable). You could remove the top LCD's from my MKII's and MKIII and I'd never miss them or possibly even notice.

You right but when your camera is 2 inches from the ground and pointing up it's impossible to use anything else. This issue really effects a small amount of people and you can easily work around it.

Custom Functions need more attention to making them perfecto

frisk said:
I wonder why it is not permitted to use one of the custom settings for in-camera HDR shooting. I don't use it much, but it is kind-of fun when you want to show the camera off a bit - when I get asked "so, what can your new camera do", its fun to demonstrate the in-camera HDR processing (with the "vivid" setting, as for some reason the people asking this kind of question seem to be really impressed with oversaturated photos).....but - I have to go into the menu each time to shoot a single HDR photo - why am I not allowed to assign this to C3, for example?

First, thank you everyone for your help! I think the above quote may have been the weak straw in my attempt. I was trying to use C3 for HDR mode... I mean who wouldn't want to do that for a European Church tour? Anyhow, thanks everyone!

24-105 - versions?

Having been in manufacturing for many years, I can tell you that problems can come up any time. Even on a mature product, you can have supplier issues, personnel turnover, or any number of other problems. Yes, the problems become less with time - the first production run is usually not the best one to buy. But after a few years of stable production, it doesn't help to get any more mature. As an example, a supplier could try to lean out there process and start making inferior products - that still pass the things you have been inspecting for! There is lots of tribal knowledge that never gets written down that can walk out the door at any time. Lots of issues. Creating a stable manufacturing process is not easy - a lot of things have to come together all at once.

Guidance re: Europe cruise

AmbientLight said:

In case you carry a backpack you are pretty safe from this, because ground staff usually assume that your backpack is reasonably light. Of course it helps if it looks light on you.

Some really good advice in this post, which I agree with. Couple of additional thoughts: if you get a backpack which can fit onto a foldable trolley, as I do (Kata do one, maybe others) you can put the thing casually onto your back for check in, and then put it back onto the trolley frame later. This works wonders... Looks small, is actually big and heavy ... The secret is flexibility, and several bags. Avoid the giant Peli case at all costs, unless you are willing to check into the hold and pay excess luggage costs, and risk losing it (almost a certainty at Paris CDG... lost my luggage TWICE there). Remember also that baggage handlers take great delight in smashing so-called indestructible cases - I swear they drove an aircraft over my Samsonite one time... split it in two.

Secondly, I've found Lufthansa pretty relaxed as a rule, but I agree with the comments about large trolleys. These may just get labelled for 'at the gate' into the hold, which you get back at the gate on arrival (not at baggage collection). Probably not going to happen on long haul, but on the smaller feeder aircraft, this is very likely. So avoid the big trolleys! At the gate handling is perhaps better than getting the full 'drive the truck over it' baggage handling experience, but not by much! Be aware that in Europe, jetways/air bridges are not so common as in the USA, so remember that you may have to carry the thing down the aircraft steps at some point, especially on smaller feeder aircraft. If you are older or infirm, this may be an issue.

Remember that if you are changing planes somewhere, they are not going to check luggage size or weight in the layover airport.

One final trick: arrive at the gate early, and stand near the gate, so that you are at the front of the boarding queue. Even travelling economy (coach) this means you will have plenty of room in the overheads for your kit (ok some other poor guy will have no room for his coat, but that's life...) Otherwise, you could find some friendly lady taking your $10,000 kit out of sight up the aircraft, to sit above the organised crime boss in seat 2A... (at least, that's how it feels at the time...)

Confusion In buying Canon Camera. Help!

I am confused in buying SX220 and SX40. I am getting more than 20% discounts on dealaboo.com in both the Canon cameras. I am a newspaper journalist and need a clear results for the front page images. any recommendations should be highly appreciated.

Should I Upgrade to Full-Frame

There is one thing you are forgetting: lenses. You have 17-55 2.8, 85 1.8, and 70-300mm DO currently, but will lose use of the 17-55 (except on the relegated XT as backup). Currently with the XT in crop, you get around 28mm at the widest end, far from your next closest 70mm on the 70-300. The 17-55 is a fast zoom, so I imagine speed is important to you. This leaves you with a bit more spending to do should you want to shoot wider with full-frame. I would consider two option:

5D Mark II with one of the following: EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM I/II, EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 24mm f/1.4L I/II USM, EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM, EF 35mm f/1.4L USM.

5D Mark III with one of the previously mentioned or, if budget does not permit, make do temporarily with the inexpensive and rather plastic EF 24mm f/2.8 (gives some CA, but center-sharp from 2.8).

Lenses: 35L II & 85L III Next Up? [CR1]

It better be 35/1.2L ... for that price ;D

Imho the most important thing would be that it is sharp wide open, too - better a sharp f1.4 than a softer f1.2 that starts getting better at f1.8... and looking at my budget, better a sharp f1.4 at $1500 than a sharp f1.2 at $2500 :-o
Indeed. I really think there is little to do to improve this lens, other than weather sealing and a bit more metal in the body (not that is isn't strong enough already, more for aesthetics/self-defence). Is the price of $2500 a bit steep? Sure it is, but it is also hardly surprising given the state of the US dollar and the harsh hits to Japan in recent times. If you need one and you need one with weather sealing, then I guess the price isn't as much an issue. If you don't want the sealing, go for the 35 1.4L now while prices are low.

5dmkii upgrade question

NWPhil said:
why not the 7D?
seems that has better AF and faster frame rate than the 5D2, which will work well on kids.
Does she wants the full frame? sure they pro's and con's in each system, but in the end, what matters is what she really wants.
With the 7D she will be able to keep the lens she has right now, and I would add up a good flash and a maybe even a tripod

But there is nothing wrong with either, specially with the 5D2 - just be sure she is not going to notice that the 5D2 is not for you too after all ;)
