Quite an about turn from "cannot focus reliably in most situations" to "being more difficult" in a particular situation. I don't need to make a comparison of taking photos of branches, I just reliably take photos of birds sitting among them- you can take photos of branches.

EVF's are great! Just this morning, 30 minutes after sunrise, I could take pictures of shore-birds without worrying about being blinded by the glare on the wet sand.

And it lets me decide between Exposure Simulation and what seems like night vision in lowlight. It allows me to instantly review a shot through the EVF in the harshest of light. And it shows with a very close approximation to true WYSIWYG my exposure, both for fine tuning AND for not blasting away with the wrong settings, as I used to occasionally (ok, sometimes more than occasionally) forget to change settings when light changed dramatically. It gives me a great histogram, fairly unobtrusive in most framing.

And as another member on another forum demonstrated, the EVF can be tweaked to show very close to HDR shadow recovery, and, more importantly to be fine-tuned for various vision-needs and exposure scenarios. Takes a little work, but this can be accomplished readily with Canon's Picture Style Editor.

Yes, there are the inevitable compromises of photography, such as battery life. Maybe a few people are sensitive to electronic screens, and that's hard.

Suggesting how to improve the EVF is important, and they will get better. Lamenting its replacement of the OVF is, in my opinion, misunderstanding the advantages of mirrorless cameras.

You are very unlucky. My R5 and R6 are still fine after updating to 1.5.0. Perhaps there is a problem with your motherboard?

Excellent review.

Sad isn't it how Canon lenses have got worse over the years until they are now unusable with film. The rot started in the early 1990s when they introduced, following USM motors for AF, those new-fangled features like the first interchangeable superzoom, image stabilization, ultra low dispersion elements etc that have ruined modern lenses. And as for DO, what more can I say? Canon is now so ashamed of their latest monstrosities, that, as you say, they can't be used with film, so much so they have put on a new RF mount so you can't make the mistake of putting them on to a film camera.

It's about to get a bit colder where I live. Not sure how much use equipment is to me when I can't use it in winter. I bought this lens for activities like skiing and hiking.

Interesting, I wouldn't have guessed that canon's would be slow to update their systems with SNs. However, that explaination makes sense since this lens has been back ordered for a while and I must have gotten a fairly fresh copy.

Thanks for your input! I was somewhat confident everything was ok but for the price of this lens i wanted to be sure.

The twist turned out to be f/11 which would have been completely impractical with a DSLR.
The RF 400 f/2.8 and RF 600 f/4 are pretty much just adapted versions of their EF counterparts.

Thanks all for the useful info. I've decided to keep the lens and accept there will be a learning curve. I spent countless hours looking through old shots and doing the exposure math and came to the conclusion that much more is possible with the lens provided I'm quicker with my math. I've tested out DxO and was pleased with the results. I find some of he denoise a little heavy handed but I know I can adjust to suit my taste. I've also embraced cropping my images for birding and am now experimenting with upscaling for print (if needed).

My iPhone is the current version of the SE. I don’t like big phones. The best iPhone cameras come on the biggest phones. I have an iPad for when I want a big screen. My iPad is the current 11” Pro, so a much better camera than in the phone, but clearly I’m not going to carry it with me to shoot pictures.

I make pictures with the phone when I don’t have a camera along. It takes decent pictures, and the panorama feature works well. I won’t bother to compare its pictures to the quality and flexibility I get from my DSLR. I use the G5X II for travel. It fits easily in jacket or pants pocket, so it is the camera I always have with me when I think I might want to shoot pictures but not lug my whole kit.

Flexibility and control are the main reasons I use the G5 rather than just relying on my phone. It has a zoom lens that goes into near telephoto range, shoots Raw files, lets you control aperture, shutter, and ISO to whatever degree you wish. The sensor is small, but a whole lot bigger than the phone’s. It doesn’t do the software tricks that the phone can, such as faking a shallow depth of field, but I would rather control that kind of thing myself in Photoshop.

Hey!

Does anyone have an explanation on why I can’t make Color Checker profiles when I use gels on my on camera flash?

I have no issues with any lens or body and all other profiles comes out perfect, including flash without gels.

I shoot a gray card to get the correct wb with gels (full+half CTO). I get a nice correct wb and then I shoot a properly exposed ColorChecker shot, but the profile created and loaded on to a shot looks terrible in every way. Neon purple lips and a very greenish in my daughters brown hair. Her skin also looks like she should be in a hospital

Update/clarification: setting the electronic full-time mf feature "ON" (R5 purple AF menu, page 5) enables mf focusing in all AF modes with the RF 100-500. Done so, everything works fine.

That was for my R5, so I purchased the RRS L bracket and no problem with flexing. I'll wait for their release.

- Sample variation can be significant. I shot jpgs with two RF 16mm's in the shop and compared the jpgs on my laptop. One was noticeably sharper than the other across the frame at f/2.8 and f/4. I looked more closely when I got home using a split screen on my monitor and this confirmed what I'd seen on my laptop in the store. There did not appear to be any inaccurate focusing in the softer lens. I experienced the same comparing two RF 50mm f/1.8 lenses.
- Raw files converted in DPP and imported as tiffs into Lightroom are significantly sharper than in-camera jpgs imported into Lightroom. For critical subjects its worth processing in DPP.
- I shot some test charts on the side of my house. There is a noticeable improvement stopping down to f/4. F/5.6 is still a little sharper.
- I compared the RF 16mm against my fully manual Samyang EF 14mm f/2.8. The Samyang is noticeably sharper and has noticeably less colour fringing than the RF lens. The difference is (not surprisingly) greatest in the corners. The RF 16mm stopped down to f/4 is still not as good as the Samyang wide open.
- I tried to manage my expectations, but I had hoped that the RF 16mm at f/4 would match the Samyang at f/2.8. That is clearly not the case. It remains to be seen if the RF16mm is usable as an astrophotography lens. I might be able to test this tonight as we will have clear skies, but an almost full moon. I am particularly interested in coma.
- As you will already know, the RF lens is much, much smaller and lighter than the Samyang, especially with adapter. It also focuses much closer. See the photo of an isopod on our beach.
- So overall, I am sure that the RF 16mm will get a lot more use than the Samyang 14mm. It is a perfect complement to my RF 24-105 f/4L, especially when I go hiking. But it looks like I will be keeping the Samyang for astro photography.

I bought one too. I haven't had a chance to shoot much yet, but I agree that, despite what we've seen in resolution charts in some reviews, the corners do get noticeably sharper as you stop down. All the talk about the corners staying the same because they are "made up" data or because of the distortion correction are incorrect. Maybe at very close distances the corners don't sharpen much, I haven't tested that yet, but at longer distances they do sharpen up. I did a quick comparison to the 10-22 APS-C lens at 10mm f/3.5 and they seem roughly comparable, but I need to compare more carefully to be sure of the results.

Adding to @Mt Spokane Photography 's comments: This is a post from eight years ago on Canon Price Watch, that explains in more details about Abe's of Maine. Information may not be current, but it sounds like from your experience, things haven't changed much.

There is nothing anyone on this site can do except offer our condolences. I am wondering what research you did, since a Google search on Abe's comes up with the above article and several other posts on forums that recount less than ideal experiences.

On the plus side it sounds like you received the camera you ordered, although it's a grey market model (not imported by Canon USA and not eligible for Canon warranty). As Mt Spokane said, Canon often honors the warranty on grey scale items, they just reserve the right not too. With any luck, you won't need to have it serviced anyway. There is nothing wrong with grey market models, they just are not intended for import to the U.S.

Enjoy the camera and consider this a learning experience. If you are in high school, you will have a lot more learning experiences ahead of you.

Before, when the M-fn button is pushed the the "DIAL FUNC" menu will appear. Now when the M-fn is pushed it does nothing. The "Customize button" mapping is still at default at "DIAL FUNC"

Because I had a wedding on Saturday, I had to find a work around by mapping the AE* Lock button to "DIAL FUNC" and it works normal.

On the r6 with the new firmware (1.50) everything works normal.

Also, I was not able to downgrade the r5 to 1.40 in EOS Utility. It won't let me. Is anyone else having this issue? I will be calling Canon tomorrow and see what they say.

Update: Got my camera back from Canon. Frist, I want to say Canon Service Center are awesome!! The person who helped me is amazing. Drop off on Monday and got it back on Wednesday! Fast turn around!

On to the service that they did. They can't say for sure the upgrade to 1.50 made the problem but it might have corrupted something. On their notes, they found "that the display panel had shorted causing one or more buttons or controls to operate improperly. The olc panel was repaired".

I'm just happy Canon was able to fixed my camera. Thank you Canon Service Center!
