R6 Image quality or focus issue?

Hello guys and girls, so I have had my R6 for 1 year now and it is just 2 months after the warranty expired, I haven't used this camera much but the last time I used this on last October 2021, that time I took some pictures with EF 70-200 F.2.8 and RF 24-105 F4 and they are perfectly sharp, yesterday was my birthday so I took out my camera again and clicked a couple of pictures, with live view and zoomed 10x for focus I didn't see any issue, but when I click and take pictures, the output is so bad, I am not sure it's the focus or something else, the images are not sharp at all, it's like I took the pictures with an old smartphone. last year I took some pictures on my birthday, same place, same setup and the images tack sharp, I am so upset with this so hopefully, somebody can help me out? Thanks a lot in advance.

PS: I know I should post some pictures but to make sure I will take some new images with daylight so I don't have to raise the iso even though the iso capability is high with this camera.

R3 Freezing Up

Well here we go again. I had high hopes that with the R3 Canon would have addressed the freezing up issue that affects the R5. I found out yesterday I was wrong. I was shooting a youth basketball game (grandson) when multiple times the R3 froze up. It was more severe than anything I've experienced with the R5. The rear screen totally froze and the on-off switch became non-functional. I had to remove the battery to reset it and unfortunately, unlike when this happens with the R5 it kept repeating the problem.

When I got home I did a quick internet search and found another user on a Canon forum with the same problem. He sent the body in to Canon, they reset the firmware and sent it back. The same thing happened again to him.

Fortunately, this was just a recreational shoot for me. I'll be very upset if it happens during a "real" ballgame.

I was using a Transcend 256gb card. I am going to try using a SanDisk card and see if that helps.

Starting this thread so that when (not if) others experience this, they can share their information.

Canon R3 users: Are you experiencing (any) major focusing issues? I am!

Hi everyone. I recently purchased a Canon R3, and jumped into the mirrorless world with two feet and an open mind. My former camera was a Canon 1Dx, and it's still going strong — after 10-years of use — with great results and awesome reliability. Sadly, however, my newly purchased Canon R3 is causing me some major heart palpitations and confidence worries, and I'm hoping (praying) that my experiences are related to my not yet knowing much about the R3's mirrorless settings or its operation. Yet, I suspect something more technical beyond my settings may be at hand, so thus my outreach.

Question for R3 users, are you experiencing (any) major focusing issues?

I'm experiencing at least five (5) unique issues:

For example:

1) When using "single point", "one shot" focus on a stationary subject (very basic stuff), my camera will (sometimes) not focus at all. It's almost like it locks up (i.e., it won't even hunt), but I can sense that it's trying to work (i.e., the focus box will light up red), but it just doesn't work. All I see is a blurry screen. Shutter button will not work. Then, as-if almost randomly and without my understanding, it will suddenly focus and the shot will be captured. I've tried changing various settings like my "shutter mode" from "electronic" to "mechanical" to see if that might be something behind it, but I'm getting the issue it in both cases. Again, I'm completely new to mirrorless technology, so perhaps it's a setting/mode function restriction I don't yet know about? When I handed the camera to my wife, she experienced the same thing.

2) When focusing on nearby subjects (but still respecting the minimum focusing distances of my lenses) my camera will again (sometimes) not focus on the subject, but this time, however, it will at least continuously "hunt" back-and-forth trying to focus, and the shutter will depress and capture a blurry image. Yet, in such cases it will often never achieve the focus. So, I power off my camera, and restart. That unacceptable solution has sometimes worked out, but clearly that's not a tenable response. I've experienced this with my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L lens (using the RF attachment ring) and the only RF lens I also recently purchased (the 50mm f/1.2L).

3) When more than one subject is in the scene, and layered, my camera really (noticeably) struggles to focus on a foreground subject, but is perfectly ok with focusing on the background (or distant) subject. This experience is really annoying, and it's seriously eroding my confidence in using this camera. I often cannot get it to focus on the foreground subject despite moving my focusing point over the foreground object. On a combination of issues 2 and 3, I randomly noticed that Tony & Chelsea Northrup were also observing some of this, but they observed these things using other R3 settings and other subject dynamics I have yet to try. You can see their review here. At different points in their review, you can hear them clearly say that they were: “missing focus on a lot of the closer shots”; “Tracking focus is exponentially harder the closer the subject gets to the camera”; "At close range, the autofocus wandered a lot even when it was locked on […] it just hunted in and out”. In my experience, I would most certainly agree, but my issues appear worse because (sometimes) I literally couldn't shoot the image despite pushing the shutter button.

4) Sometimes, my focusing point will not move, despite my trying to reposition it. It just sits wherever it may be on the screen. Again, almost as-if it locks up.

5) When focusing with "eye control", which does somewhat work for me, I cannot get the camera to focus on the left side of the screen with my eye, despite several calibration attempts under different lighting conditions. It will only work top, bottom, and right. A second issue is that the focus won't "stay" where my eye is looking. Obviously, hard to explain in a forum, but while I'm clearly looking at a fixed point (almost stubbornly with intense concentration) I can notice the focusing box awkwardly drifting in a slow straight line to the right of the screen. Almost like a mouse button randomly locking up on you and it drifting off in a straight line to the corner of a monitor.

Final points: While my time and experience in using the Canon R3 is limited, I have had some wonderful experiences too. Like when I was able to photograph my newborn son sleeping without disturbing him. I was able to accomplish this by using the "silent shutter" mode and the tilt screen angled high above my head with subject tracking on in a very low ambient light situation under high ISO values. That whole situation and combination of features just worked out awesomely in a way my 1Dx never could, and it was honestly borderline ridiculous how my low light shot held from a distance above my head turned out tack sharp with no discernable noise. But clearly the other focusing problems I'm having are a no-go.

Altogether, I really, really want this to work out, and give the future of mirrorless cameras a chance. Yet, I must confess, a large part of me is wondering if I made a mistake by not going with the 1Dx Mark III. One last point before I close this long message, the AD-E1 adapter is absolutely necessary, and I was livid when I read Canon said it was an "optional" accessory. Careful: The official discourse on this is not consistent, and this situation only came to my attention when I couldn't get any of my numerous Canon flashes to fire on my R3, then looked at the manual to find out why. The shoe fits, but the flashes will either not fire at all, or if they do, they will fire with a full 1/1 power dump. The manual I read clearly noted this, so there is nothing optional about that AD-E1 block if you plan to use a Canon 600 EX-RT flash, and at the very least, after spending nearly $8000 on a camera, Canon should have just automatically included it in the box. That, in my mind was a clear design flaw and a massive customer oversight, but perhaps Canon really does think it's an option because (rumor) they are working on a flash that powers off the R3's battery, but good luck with that too because this thing is voracious on batteries next to my 1Dx experience. I get about 415 pictures over a full charge. I've already ordered extra batteries. Cheers, Jeff

Can Canonrumors stop posting body stock notices for Canon USA???

This is now the second time that I followed a post by canon rumors where they said an R3 body was in stock at Canon, Canon USA said it was in stock, took my money, then after told me it was on backorder. Same thing happed with the R5. I don't know if this is bait and switch, or Canon just enjoying holding onto people's money, but clearly Canon USA is not concerned with their misinformation on their web site as to what is in stock. I think until that changes Canon rumors should not aid them in perpetuating these lies. It tarnishes Canon Rumors reputation as much as it does Canon USA.

What to do when leaving PRO-4000 printer stored/unused for a long time?

I'm planning to take an extended trip away from home probably at least 1 or maybe 2 months. I've personally experienced how cranky Canon's printers get and how much ink they waste when you don't use them regularly. Is there any way to avoid this? The manual doesn't seem to mention anything about long term printer storage. I had even considered if maybe it would be possible to print remotely to the printer every week or so. But for some reason my printer drops the WiFi connection a lot and I have to re-pair it to my router, so I'm not sure if that would even reliably work. I'm not even sure if I should leave the printer on or off when I leave. I just installed a new $700 print head in this thing a few months ago, and I really don't want the printer to decide I didn't use it for too long so it's time for another new head once I get back home.

Any tips on what to do? Is two months of setting unused even worth worrying about? Thanks.

This is how you downgrade the firmware on a Canon camera

There are rumors going around that people are having autofocus issues with firmware 1.5.0 and the Canon EOS R5. This isn’t something that I have experienced, nor I have received any communication about issues. Sometimes I’m the first line of tech support for whatever reason.
KH Cams on YouTube has posted a video showing you how to downgrade the firmware on the Canon EOS R6. This will also work with the Canon EOS R5. It’s claimed that it’ll work on any Canon dual card slot camera, but I have not and likely never will test this out.
Canon firmware downgrade instructions:

Put firmware v1.5.0 on one SD card and v1.4.0 on another.
Insert the SD card with 1.5.0 into the camera
Go to the firmware update in the menu
Press okay on the update, and as quickly as possible open the battery door on the camera or battery grip...

The global chip shortage forces Canon to remove toner copy protection

Canon has been forced to remove copy protection chips to their toner cartridges in some regions. It’s obviously more important that customers can print, than the copy protection for Canon’s benefit.
Canon.de support has said that cartridges for a lot of ImageRunner series multi-function printers will be affected. For now, only toner cartridges are affected and ink-based cartridges will continue to have the chip.
Customer experience will be affected by this decision, as the Canon driver software will give users a warning about not using “genuine Canon toner”. There is a workaround if you’re affected by this issue.
Depending on the model of MFP that you have, you will be required to click, I agree, close, or press OK in the right spots to bypass the warning.

Review: Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye 3D VR

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye 3D VR lens. This is Canon’s first foray into VR content development. This lens was scheduled to begin shipping in December, but I haven’t received any reports of preorders shipping out to buyers. Canon will also release software on a subscription model to create VR content.
Currently, only the Canon EOS R5 with firmware v1.5.0 fully supports the RF 5.2mm f/2.8L.
This is going to be a difficult lens for reviewers, but I’m sure we’ll start to see some pretty cool content in the coming months.

Patent: Canon continues Quad-Pixel autofocus development

The next autofocus advancement coming from Canon will likely be in the form of quad-pixel autofocus, I would think we’d see such technology appear in the Canon EOS R1 first.

Are many R3's are getting out the door?

As I impatiently wait, ordered mine on the morning of 9-14 from one of the large NY stores, I'm wondering how many are actually getting into hands of photogs. I see a handful on the sidelines of NFL games, but the first I spotted was used by an Explorer of Light who has been posting pics on his insta. Since then it's only been in use by team photographers.

Hesitating on this R5 Purchase..

Hi Everyone,

I have wanted the R5 for some time, finally got the funds to buy one, and now I hesitate. I love the video quality of the Sony A7SIII (a friend has one). Still, I am looking for a camera that can give me excellent video and a professional photography camera, and have always loved Canon products. My main concerns are overheating in 4K HQ (I don't plan to use 8K so much) and also the pending release of the Canon R5C with internal cooling.

I guess I have two questions for you all. After all the recent firmware updates on the R5, how long do your R5 cameras last before overheating in 4K HQ? Can you still capture stills when they do overheat, or is the camera rendered useless until it cools down?

Final question, and this is more speculation than anything; what do you all anticipate the price being on the R5C? AND should I hold out? I think it would be way over my budget of about $5k for the camera and the 24-105mm lens. Right now, I have a pending deal with a photo store for $5800 with tax included for the R5, 24-105 mm USM lens, Lexar SD 2000X 128 GB, CFEXPRESS 256 GB, and three years of Canon's Carepak. I am about to pull the trigger, but knowing I'd like longer recording times is a concern for me.. so wondering what the thoughts are here. Right now, I don't do professional video shooting, but I hope to go into that this year and would hate to spend this kind of money on something that wouldn't work for me. I need some professional guidance here!

Thanks so much!

Has the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens been discontinued?

Hi all,

Newbie here, I have been searching everywhere for a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens. Currently not available anymore.

Has this lens been discontinued?

Will there be a new version of this coming out soon?
I know there is a L version available, but this is currently out of my budget for what I require this particular lens for.

Thanks

R5 or R5c?

I’ve tried to read all the currently existing topics, but i didn’t seem to get an answer to my question.

I currently own the Canon 5D mk2, since It’s been released. I want to upgrade to a newer model and find the R5 a good fit for me. Now the R5c is on the radar, I’m trying to figure out if that’s a smarter decision.

In addition to my Canon, i also own a DJI Mavic 2 pro, that i use for both pictures and video (4k). I’ve been thinking about doing more video, that could compliment the drone footage.

How do y’all compare the R5c to the R5?

Would it be worth waiting for, since it seems to be an improved version of the R5? (Don’t care that much about the difference in price)
