Lastolite products rebranded Manfrotto

Lastolite products have been sold for a while as "Lastolite by Manfrotto", but now Vitec Grpup has decided to drop the Lastolite brand fully and sell those products under the Manfrotto brand.

As far as I know they will be the same products made in UK - just now named Manfrotto.

Shedding some light on CFexpress firmware and camera compatibility

Yesterday I reported on compatibility issues with the Canon EOS R5 running firmware v1.4.0 and Exascend CFexpress memory cards.
After talking to a few people, I have come to somewhat of a conclusion that there will likely be some bumps along the way when it comes to CFexpress firmware and camera firmware. Exascend is not the first company that has had some compatibility issues with the Canon EOS R5 and CFexpress cards.
I spoke with “Tig” from Camnostic this morning about the issues that have come up with CFexpress and compatibility. Be sure to check that site out for great information on CFexpress cards and more.
What it appears to boil down to is that CFexpress is a relatively new standard, and there are going...

SIGMA will announce two new Contemporary prime lenses soon

The Q4 announcement spree from manufacturers looks to be ramping up, as SIGMA will announce two new Contemporary prime lenses soon.
SIGMA will announce the following lenses

24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary
90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary

Both of these lenses are for full-frame mirrorless applications, which likely means they’re for Sony’s E-Mount and SIGMA, Leica, and Panasonic’s L-Mount.
I do not expect these two lenses to be SIGMA’s first foray into the RF mount, which I do wish was happening.

Which EF-RF adapter?

I am considering to get an RF mount body (R3) at some point, and since I already have a number of EF lenses, getting an EF-RF adapter is on the horizon.

I am therefore looking for peoples experiences - good or bad - with the EF-RF adapters.
Since I already have CPOL (77, 82, DI-52) and ND filters (77, 88) that fit most of my lenses, I am questioning the value of getting the RF-filter versions.

Have anyone looked into whether the DI-52 CPOL can be used with the EF-RF filter adapter?

- Which one have you used? (RF, RF control ring, CPOL, Variable ND filter)
- If you had to choose over, would you choose the same adapter?

Thanks.

Is September 14 the day we finally get the official Canon EOS R3 announcement?

I reported back in July that we would finally see the Canon EOS R3 officially announced in September 2021, after a false alarm of a June announcement.
There are now a few things lining up that seem to point to an announcement on or around September 14, 2021. I haven’t yet confirmed this date, but it’s becoming apparent that we don’t have long to wait to finally see the EOS R3 in all of its glory.
Canon EOS R3 Specifications:

R5 instant light issue in footage

Hello everyone. I recently bought my new r5 and having a really disturbing issue. I am using my r5 with ef lens adapter with my Tamron lenses. While I am recording video, an instant light like flash is occurring and I don't know what causes it. You can see the issue in the video below. Does anyone faced this or have an idea of what can cause it? Thanks.

Canon’s accessory shoe coming to the EOS R5c and could be an upgrade option for the EOS R5

Canon has introduced what it calls an “accessory shoe” for the Canon EOS R3 and the recently announced Canon XF605 professional camcorder.
Yesterday, TEAC announced their first third-party accessory for the new accessory shoe which will add XLR microphone capabilities to the EOS R3 and XF605, but this is just the beginning of what we’ll see for the accessory shoe in the coming months and years.
I have been told that the Canon EOS R5c will also receive this accessory shoe, which makes a lot of sense.
I have also been told that Canon may offer the accessory shoe as a...

PRO-4000 print head went bad, could it be related to power outage/brown out?

I recently got a dreaded print head error on my PRO-4000 printer. It looks like there is no option but to replace the print head, which I have now ordered.

However, I'm suspicious because my house experienced a "brown-out" due to storms while I was out of town (and shortly after I got back.) For a period of time my wall outlets had about 80 volts coming out of them instead of the proper 110V. I leave the printer on all the time because it seems to be happier that way compared to constantly turning it off and on. So the printer was on when this occurred. But, it's worth noting that I had the printer plugged into a Furman PST-8 surge protector, which it pretty much the best surge protector you can buy. While I'm not 100% sure, I seem to remember that the surge protector wouldn't even turn on when the voltage in the house was low, so it might even have logic to just shut off the power going through it if it senses low voltage.

The print head error happened the very next time I used the printer after the power issues though. Now I'm trying to figure out if the print head damage might have been related to the power issues, or if it just coincidentally happened right at the same time.

What do you guys think? I have heard some people say the print heads only last about two years anyway, and if that's the case, then I guess mine was about due to go out. My main concern is that I usually only print one small thing about every week just to keep the head from clogging up. Maybe I need to print more often to avoid printer head issues in the future?

Ultimately I'm just not sure if I should consider the head failure a result of the power issues, even though I had it plugged into a very good surge protector, or if I should change my printing habits to prolong the life of the new head. Thanks.

Canon Warranty Period Glitch???????

I have a dilemma with the "effective" warranty period on Canon Gear that is Pre-ordered on line and am wondering if any of my fellow CR members have any practical experience with warranty claim filing under the following circumstances. When registering any product with Canon USA, on line, you are asked to provide the purchase date, which effectively starts the one year warranty coverage. This is the potential problem. Citing just one of many on line pre-order purchases made this year, I placed a pre-order for the new RF 100mm F2.8 is macro lens on Jun 1, 2021, the first day it was possible to place an order for it. This lens wasn't in stock, needless to say and didn't ship until Aug 15, ten weeks after ordering. Even though your CC is not charged until the lens ships, the included receipt shows purchase date of Jun 1. So, when registering lens on Canon's on line USA site, you are asked for the product's purchase date, not the shipped or received date. Seemingly, in this real world example, I have already used ten weeks of Canon warranty period before I even have possession of the lens. I was surprised that the provided receipt didn't show the same date as CC charge, Aug 15, which seems IMO, the fair and right thing to do. So, my question is, has anyone had any first hand warranty claim experience with Canon under similar circumstances? Would Canon deny my warranty if I filed a warranty claim in say, mid July of 2022, even though I've only had the lens for 11 months? Doesn't seem right to me. Interested to see what my fellow CR members think or have experienced. Thinking about the upcoming R3 release and a possible pre-order of same. If, say pre-orders could be placed on Sept 15, 2021 but excessive volume of orders caused the camera to be unavailable for shipment until say, Feb 2022, ( a potentially realistic scenario, given current backlog on most pre-orders), do I then have only 7 mos of real warranty remaining on a camera body that I didn't receive until five months later??

Gitzo Legende Tripod GK1545T-RTI Review -Indiegogo

I received my Gitzo GK1545T-RTI Legende Tripod earlier today and wanted to post a quick review, both on the tripod and the crowdfunding experience. I hope this will help others in making future decisions involving Gitzo and/or Indiegogo....

Like many others, when I first heard about this project, I was skeptical. After all, why would Gitzo, a long-standing and reputable company, resort to crowdfunding in order to fund their project... Despite my doubts, I decided to go participate...

Photo related to this review can be found here.

Why I chose to take part in the campaign...

I loved my GT1541T for years before upgrading to my current GT1545T tripod, which I have grown to love even more. I shoot mostly landscapes, so having a reliable, lightweight and compact tripod which I could practically fit into (or alongside) most backpacks was very important to me. Having the GT1545T allowed this and set quite a high standard for my future tripod decisions. For reference, I currently have an R5 (previous a 5DIV) and the GT1545T easily holds 60+ second exposure shots with either body with my 70-200 2.8 II mounted...without any stability concerns.

FYI: I have tried RRS Tripods and the new Peak Design Carbon Fiber Tripods but have preferred the Gitzo designs/usability/price over both brands.

My issue...was that I never loved a compact ballhead. I loved the Markins Q3i but wanted something a bit smaller. I then moved onto the RRS BH-30 which was compact, but the elongated design on the main knob which commonly hits the botton of the plate, was very frustrating. (A silly design which could have been easily remedied by using a basic round knob instead of the elongated one.) The current Gitzo head (GH1382QD) , which is designed for their Series 1 Traveler Tripods, is solid choice but the price on its own ($200 used, $350 new) is not worth it in my opinion, especially when you can get the combo (which includes the GT1545T Tripod) for about $600 new or $500 used. I understood that the Legende Tripod was essentially a special edition of the 1545T but I was intrigued by the new design of the ballhead and decided to go for it.

The price of the "perk" via Indiegogo was $519 for the Tripod which included the ballhead and is almost $100 less than the current GT1545T Combo. Gitzo's resale value also holds pretty well, so I can easily resell my current set up for more (or at least) than the $519 I spent on the perk. (I ended up getting the combo which included the Legende Tripod and Mini Tripod for $619 - For reference, the Mini Tripod retails for $200)

Tripod Review...

The tripod, when compared to my current GT1545T legs, seems very solid. Below are some differences that were immediately noticeable:
  • The tripod legs seem to be the same with a few asthetic differences, such as the silver leg joints replacing the 1545T's rubber joints. (i actually prefer the rubber joints, but usage over time may change my opinion)
  • Both tripods are the same length folded (even with the legs reversed) but the Legende extends about 1-2" higher than the GT1545 when fully extended.
  • The Legende's leg position switches are similar to the older GT1541T switches. (I don't have a preference between the two styles...)
  • The metal used in the Main Hub (which connects the three legs) are different: The Legende's hub is sleeker black metal which the GT1545T's is textured and appears thicker
  • The GT1545T's Main Hub, has an accessory hole which is very useful. (I use a carabiner hook on there and attach it in various ways to my backpacks). The Legende does NOT have this hole.
  • The Legende Tripod includes a numbered planning plate
  • The Legende Tripod comes with an updated screw-in hook included with the tripod.
The new ballhead also seems very promising. Below are my initial observations:
  • Solid construction.
  • Allows for the Legende's legs to be reverse-folded around it, reducing overall bulk of the combo
  • The arca swiss design clamp (when locking screw removed) holds all of my plates, including my peak design capture clip plate
  • The main knob is large and contains a friction knob in the middle
  • All knobs move fluidly
  • Concern: There doesn't seem to be locking mechanisms for the panning and friction knobs, so turning too far the opposite way, will cause that knob to come off?! This should have been as easy design fix, especially for this calibre of tripod
  • Concern: Friction knob could be a bit smaller... it is large and can easily be inadvertently moved when operating the main knob
Overall I am happy I decided to be a part of the campaign. I never needed service on either of my previous Gitzo tripods and I hope for the same with the Legende. One of the Legende's big selling points is its lifetime warranty...which hopefully I will never need to use...but if I do, I hope the process is as easy as advertised. Only time will tell.

Now as far as the campaign itself...

As mentioned above, Gitzo's announcement of this campaign was met with concerns from many. Those concerns were later supported as Gitzo's communication throughout the initial portion of campaign was sub-par. Gitzo's updates on the Indiegogo Site were far and few. Many backers submitted questions only to receive a generic response which did not address their concerns. Backers were frustrated at Gitzo's non-responsiveness, understandably since many had already contributed $500-$700.

Skepticism peaked when some early recipients reported that their tripods had arrived scuffed and scratched as if they were second-hand items. Comments and photos confirming these reports fueled the fire. It wasn't until then that Gitzo, in my opinion, stepped up. To many contributors' disappointment, Gitzo announced that it found that the cause of the damaged tripods was inadequate packaging, and sought to redesign the delivery packaging. This task...would delay delivery of the tripod by a few months! So...the tripod, which was originally scheduled to be delivered in May and June, would now be delivered by the end of August. As expected, many backers were disappointed with the delay.

Gitzo followed up with informative videos, showing contributors the packaging error, and how they planned to remedy it. They continued with more videos and photos, updating backers regularly for the remainder of campaign. I, personally, appreciated Gitzo's transparency and that they owned up to a mistake and corrected it, before it potentially became a bigger problem. As with any business, mistakes/errors will happen and that is understandable...but it is how the business responds will probably be how consumers will remember their experience.

My tripods (Legende and Mini) arrived packed extremely well, first in a larger 26" box, which contained a 24" box which contained the 21" Legende tripod box and the 10" Mini Tripod box. . The Legende was then packed very well within its own box. There was lots of packing materials throughout the package. I would think it would be extremely unlikely that damage could occur within all of these layers of protection.

Both tripod were in excellent condition with absolutely NO signs of use. NO scratches, NO scuffs, NO dents.

Again, overall I am very happy that I chose to take part and remain in the campaign. Some lessons learned, but in the end, I have a great tripod, that will hopefully last for a long time.

7. Fixes an issue in which sufficient image stabilization effects may not be attained immediately after the start of shooting.

Firmware Version 1.4.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.3.1. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.4.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

High megapixel body speculations and wishes

I'm interested to see what CR members think:
Will the next high megapixel camera come in a form of a R5s, R3s or maybe R1?

Would you like to see it with an integrated vertical grip or would you like it to come come in a form of a smaller "R5-like" body?

Personally I would buy both. A faster high res camera with integrated grip, more battery power, fast and reliable wifi and a smaller, lighter camera for backup and hiking.
