A new Canon professional camcorder appears for certification

A professional Canon camcorder has appeared for certification. This unreleased camcorder is likely what I reported on back in July. This camcorder will sit below the Canon XF705 and will be announced later this month.
Back in March, I reported this camera name as the Canon XF505. The naming may have been a guess, but there will be only one camera between the XF405 and XF705 for now. Nokishita is naming it the Canon XF605, which would be a logical name for the new camcorder.
Canon XF605 Specifications

4K 1″ Sensor
15x zoom
Dual SD cards
Full-sized HDMI ports
12G-SDI
Similar codecs as the Canon Cinema EOS C70
BP-A batteries

Are you interested in the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 coming to RF mount?

Hi All

I discovered that Tamron has developed a 35-150mm f/2-2.8 lens (for Sony E-mount) ... and wow, this lens would be great (it would be even better if it also came in RF mount). You can find more information on this lens via the following link to Tamron's website press-release

It is a useful focal length, and appealing relatively wide aperture for certain applications. I have been searching for a lens like this for some time.. and would use it for event photography - including birthdays, weddings, camps, church and Christian events, and other celebrations. Event photography is one of the photographic genres I do - and often get requests for).

I would certainly want (need) AF to be speedy and accurate... and hopefully the RF protocols would be able to do that - if opened up to 3rd party manufacturers.
Also, it would be a great bonus is Canon's IBIS worked seamlessly and effectively with this Tamron lens. In fact, that would be an important factor for me to consider purchasing it (or not).

So, CR friends, my questions to you are:
1) would you find this a lens useful - if so, what would you use it for?
2) depending on the price (and other factors) - would you likely add this to your lens collection?

DPReview also posted about this lens' announcement, saying "Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD for full-frame Sony E-mount on the way"
It seems a lot of forum members there would love to see this lens for Canon RF mount (and Nikon Z mount too).

Regards

Patent: Canon RF 24mm f/1.4L and Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L

A patent application for some wide-angle fast prime optical designs has been uncovered by Canon News.
Included in this patent are optical formulas for an RF 22mm f/1.4L USM, RF 24mm f/1.4L USM, and an RF 35mm f/1.4L USM, We have seen multiple patents for both the RF 24 f/1.4L and RF 35 f/1.4L, but keep in mind that we have also seen patents for an RF 35mm f/1.2L USM, which appears on our Canon RF lens roadmap.
I feel like I’m beating a dead horse, as lots of lens announcements have been delayed for obvious reasons. I have no timeline for any of the lenses on the roadmap, but I do expect Canon to have a lot of lens announcements in 2022. Canon is also probably making the right call on delaying announcements that they cannot manufacture to the levels of demand.
Of all of these optical designs, I do believe that the RF...

Anyone tested R5(6) + TC 1.4x III + 400mm f/5.6L ?

Has anyone used or knows someone who's used this combo and could tell how it performs?

I have this lens combo on a 7D Mark II and really want IS. Doing the math, my conclusion is that the best option for me while keeping a prime lens is to move to a body with IBIS. Since I'm tired of waiting for the ghost R7, the R5 seems the only option.

I appreciate your comments.

Cheers,
Fabio.

Sigma 150–600mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports

It's just for the Sony E for now but maybe is a foretaste of things to come for us. Price is £1195 in the UK. Weight is 2.1 kg (presumably plus a couple of hundred gram with the hood etc), which is just on the heavy side for me but lighter than the original sports. The MTFs look good - theoretically similar to the 100-500mm at telephoto end but weaker at 150mm, and slightly better than the original Sigma Sports.

Industry News: Sony officially warns about CIS laser damage

Sony has released an official warning about CIS laser damage to CMOS image sensors. I imagine there have been some recently damaged cameras from laser lights in recent months that brought about this official warning.
From Sony:
Do not directly expose the Lens to beams such as laser beams. This may cause damage to the image sensor and cause the camera to malfunction.
Note: In either outdoor or indoor environment when there is a laser display, tendency of direct or indirect (laser beam bounce from reflective object) damage to the camera CMOS Sensor is still very high.
This risk doesn’t just affect Sony CMOS sensors obviously, always take care of your camera around laser light presentations. There have been mentions of the risk lasers pose to camera sensors in the past, as we saw people showing the issue once videography became a big part of interchangeable lens camera usage.

Exclusive! DPReview confirms what has already been confirmed. The Canon EOS R3 will be 24mp

The Canon EOS R3 will be 24mp, as already confirmed here last week by a forum member. The fine folks at DPReview now have an “exclusive” confirmation that the EOS R3 will be 24mp. You can’t make this stuff up.
From DPReview
After speaking with a photo editor who manages images captured by photographers at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, DPReview can confirm the maximum resolution of files coming straight out of Canon EOS R3 cameras being used at the Olympics is 6000 x 4000 pixels, meaning the sensor inside is 24MP. File sizes come in between 14MB and 16MB.
There you have it, Gannon with the great...

Is it T Stops not F Stops we should care about?

I should start by saying if this has been discussed here elsewhere please send me to the thread, but an initial search didn't throw anything up. My question is really, is anyone aware of any broad standardised test of T Stops across lenses? It's not meant to be an idle question, I've been to the DxO site which gives the scores for quite a few lenses (although not obviously mapped to EV unless it's a 1:1 mapping?). I'll attach a screen grab which shows (I think) that the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L ii USM and the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM seem to have 1/2EV of different amounts of light hitting the sensor (which seems like quite a lot). In other words (I think) one is letting in 1/2 a stop of light "more" to the sensor even though they have the same (and constant) F2.8 aperture. (DxO have also helpfully attached the same camera to both lenses). The second question relates to any real world experiences people may have had. For any given aperture primes are supposed to be better for light transmission than zooms for any given F Stop (less glass), and I've noted how long zooms seem to struggle with low light more than they "should" given their stated aperture. Behind the scenes at Canon’s CPS facility at the Tokyo Olympics

Photographer Jeff Cable, who has been in Tokyo shooting the Olympics games takes us behind the scenes at Canon’s CPS facility. This is where you go to get all the gear you could ever possibly need, and if you’ve had a mishap, Canon can make a lot of repairs onsite.
Cleaning Sensors at Canon CPS Behind the Scene
One of the interesting machines available to shooters is Canon’s image sensor cleaner. You mount the camera to a machine and it does all of the work to get the dust off of your sensor and clear out any other dust inside the camera.
Head on over to Jeff Cable’s blog to see how everything works for Canon’s professional photographers...

Canon releases Q2 2021 financials, and exceeds expectations

Canon has released its financials for Q2 of 2021, and things are better than the company expected. As you have previously heard, printer sales have been great because of people working from home. Demand for cameras has also exceeded expectations as people have picked up new hobbies during the pandemic. Canon has raised its forecasts for cameras shipped for the remainder of 2021.
There isn’t much in the way of easter eggs of information that I can find in the presentation material, but Canon has definitely been surprised by the demand for cameras and lenses and compared to the same quarter in 2020, Canon is performing extremely well.
Canon imaging presentation
Demand for cameras is growing steadily thanks to the strength of consumer spending in the United States and elsewhere, and the increasing number of people picking up cameras as a hobby and image expression as a new way of using time amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, we raised our outlook for the size of the global...

The Canon EOS R3 shows up for more certifications

The Canon EOS R3 has appeared for certification in Thailand along with some older Canon accessories. I’m not sure what the Speedlite 600EX II-RX is, as the Speedlite 600EX II-RT exists. There are a lot of older Canon accessories on the certification list below, so it’s probably much ado about nothing.
There is no new information to gather from this certification, but we’ll see the Canon EOS R3 officially announced in September.

Taking the EF 400mm 2.8 for a Test drive

Next week I am going to take EF 400mm f2.8 III for a test drive via the CPS Canada program. We have our local (kinda) Abbotsford International Airshow next weekend so I am hoping to get a chance to really put it through the paces on my R5 and R6.

Will hit up the local wetland as well and see what it can do.

I normally check out Flickr for image examples but something seems busted over there for the last week. Would love to see some examples from the R5\R6 400mm combo

The Canon EOS R3 will be 24mp, confirmed by EXIF data

It looks like the resolution of the sensor in the Canon EOS R3 has been confirmed at 24mp. It looks like EXIF data that made it out of Tokyo Olympics images have made their way to the Canon Rumors Forum.
The EXIF data shows an image size of 6000×4000 pixels, which puts us at 24mp.

Laowa 100mm f2.8 2X Macro APO for RF

Hi just bought a used but 10/10 condition Laowa 100mm f2.8 Macro. This is my first macro, manual lens and that too from a third party. Unless I missed something I am unable to take a shot when I press down on the shutter button. I have it set to manual operation mode, and using focus peaking to focus, the aperture is set to 2.8 but the R6 is reading it as F00. Do you think I need to update the firmware on my R6, or the lens or both?

Multiple mentions put the Canon EOS R3 sensor resolution “around 24mp”

There have been multiple mentions likely from people in and around the Tokyo games that the resolution is “closer to” or “around” 24mp, and not the 30.1mp image sensor that I reported last month.
There was a report recently suggesting that the EOS R3 would be 45mp, but I don’t think most of us thought that one was accurate.
I think the resolution of the camera will either be teased by Canon or will make its way out of Tokyo through these sorts of sites before the Olympics are over.
More to come…

Flickering lights?

I was out the other day filming some test shots (14h work for approx. 7 min "final" result). Boy was that exhausting :)

It's nothing professional in all means, just me trying out the filmning capabilities with the Canon R5.

I was using my RF 15-35 f/2.8, RF 85 f/1.2 and my EF 600 f/4 III and noticed during some shots the lights were flickering like crazy, don't really know why. I do think it has something to do with the shutterspeed.

I was shooting in manual mode, and don't know how to keep a consistent shutterspeed really. Sometimes I was on f/1.2 with a 3 stop ND-filter and some times on f/4 or smaller with my 600mm (that doesn't have any ND filter) and even my 15-35 with and without the ND filter was used.
It seems like it's under artificial lightning the flickering went mad.

How do I avoid that? Should I shoot in full auto? When I switched to Auto ISO it went straight up to 800 ISO and overexposed everything and I had to adjust the aperture to around f/11 or smaller some times, that eliminated some of the subject isolation I wanted with f/1.2 and even overexposed at f/4 on my 600mm.

All edited in Final Cut Pro (latest version), and I improvised a tune with my midi keyboard in Logic Pro.

Would really love to know the tips and trix to be able to make somewhat consistent footage.

Oh, i filmed in 4K HQ only 4:2:2 Clog 3 and applied Canon LUT afterwards and did some adjustments.

The ratio is strange, I know, but it's made for IGTV and down scaled to 1080*1920 to match the portrait modes on phones/tablets.

Patent: A sensor protection assembly for a small form factor RF mount ILC

Update on this patent translation from Canon News:
Every now and then we post a patent application and make mistakes on assumptions with the Japanese translations.  This is one of those times, as noted to us, this patent application is not a shutter assembly but another assembly that Canon is looking at simply covering the sensor without using the delicate shutter (or in the case of cameras with global shutters).
We will strive to do better than we apologize for the mischaracterization and reporting on the patent application.
Canon News has uncovered a detailed patent showing what looks to be a compact shutter assembly for a small form factor RF mount camera.
This shutter assembly is extremely small, and Canon News thinks...
