R5 Firmware 1.3 disables Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 RF

CONFIRMED:

While Samyang lens firmware was updated to Version 3 in November 2020 to enable IBIS on the Canon R5, working well with Canon R5 firmware Version 1.2, the most recent revision of Canon R5 firmware to Version 1.3 released on March 29, 2021 has now disabled all communication protocols between the Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 RF and the Canon R5, making the Samyang lens unusable, with the dreaded F00 aperture and no AF. I'm in touch with Samyang's North American tech rep, and will be confirming the problem with him tomorrow.

EF 24mm TS-E : Version 1 vs Version 2 and other questions

HI all!!

Ok, I still have GAS...and now looking to maybe get a Tilt Shift lens and eyeballing a 24mm one.

I was researching and found out there is a version 1 and a version 2.

Is there very much difference between the two? Enough for a large price difference?

I'm excited to get one to not only shoot on my trusty 5D3...but also since the circle image is large, it would be fun adapted to my gfx100, and heck....I'd have fun adapting it to ANY mirrorless camera I happen to be playing with.

I know the lens is sharp and a great performer...but not sure between the versions. While I usually wait and save to get the later versions....just curious in this case if it is worth it.

Hoping @privatebydesign in particular sees this, and that I know he uses the TS lenses a lot.

I've also hears that some people get the 17mm and use a tele converter on it...to basically get what is essentially 2-for-1 with the 17mm and then with the converter on it, approx 24mm...?

What's the thoughts on this?

Also, if you use the 24mm to shoot a panoramic with the shift function...what are the dimensions you end up with?
What about with the 17mm panos?

Off topic a little...I was watching YouTube and saw that Schneider had put out what appears to be some VERY large image circle TS lenses....a couple I think were actually made large enough to project large format or maybe medium format film image circles.

Does anyone know anything about them?

Anyway, back to canon....I've always kinda wanted to play with TS and as I've started looking I"ve run into some questions so was hoping for some advice from the pros here.

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Canon is developing more super-telephoto lenses [CR2]

Canon will soon announce the RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and the RF 600mm f/4L IS USM. The first super-telephoto lenses for the RF mount. They aren’t stopping there.
I have been told the that two following lenses are also in development and will arrive next year.
Canon RF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM
This new DO super-telephoto lens will be the smallest and lightest lens of its kind. It’s a completely new optical formula for the RF mount.
Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM
A lot of people love the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM 1.4x, and Canon will be bringing us a successor. The source wasn’t sure if the new super-telephoto zoom would have a built-in teleconverter or not.

Here is the Canon EOS R3

This one comes as a bit of a surprise. I have been thinking that we might get a development announcement for a flagship RF mount body sometime before the Tokyo Games this summer, but here we are.
This is the Canon EOS R3 and I currently do not have any specifications for this camera body. If it is indeed for a development announcement, we won’t have specifications for quite some time.

New Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro features revealed

As you know, Canon will introduce the first RF macro lens, the Canon RF 100mmf/2.8L IS USM Macro alongside the RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 600mm f/4L IS USM.
The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro will feature a new ring called “SA Control” which means you’ll be able to control spherical aberrations in the lens.
Spherical aberration is present when the outer parts of a lens do not bring light rays into the same focus as the central part. Images formed by the lens at large apertures are therefore unsharp but get sharper at smaller apertures.
This new lens will also feature 1.4x magnification, which you can see in this patent. The current EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM is a 1:1 macro...

Canon FD TS 35mm SSC Breech Lock: Anyone know anything about this lens?

Hello all,

In my continuing look for interesting vintage manual focus lenses to use on various mirrorless cameras, I came across this interesting lens:

Canon FD TS 35mm SSC Breech Lock

I can't find any real information on this lens, and curious if anyone here has links to info on it, or more importantly, experience with this lens?

About the only info I could find was that this was one of the first TS lenses Canon made perhaps?

I'm wondering how sharp it is, how well the TS works, etc.....I can get what appears to be a decent deal on this lens, and I've never played with TS lenses before and this might prove to be a good economical way to give one a shot.

Thank you in advance for any info, advice and/or links!!

RF Teleconverters

So last week I had the opportunity to see the Blue Angels practice... think of it as a small air show. It's 6 jets that typically run in a group of 6, 4+2, 4+1+1 (mostly 4+2 so you are mostly keeping an eye on 2 groups). I was positioned away from the air strip (other side of the sound) to see the majority of the action.

Knowing that most of the maneuvers I wanted to catch was going to happen far away I opted for the RF 100-500 + 2x TC to focus on that action. I also knew they did a few flyby's semi close to us, so I was willing to sacrifice those shots potentially. This put me at a 600-1000mm range during the course of shooting. I was typically able to keep them in frame, except when the 4 in formation got really close (400-500 would have probably been best for framing of those as 600 was just a bit tight). However, it is a shame that for those few moments, not being able to drop just a little lower than 300 (native) on the lens is not possible due to the hard stop.

Done again, I would have pulled the 2x and mounted the 1.4x (or went w/o) about 3/4 of the way thru... however it's easy to say that now knowing how long it lasted.

Note: This was a bit of a first for me, as I never really had this long of a zoom (or tele's for that matter) so I'm still learning... but was fairly pleased with the results.

Point I'm trying to get at is it would be have been nice to use the full range of the lens with the TC. And for that matter to be able to use the TC's on other lenses (besides the DO's which I'm not getting since the 100-500 kind of fills that need).

Unfortunately, if I'm not mistaken, the EF TC's only went thru a few variations w/ approximately a decade in between. I really hope that we will see RF TC's that doesn't limit travel (or can be used on other lenses... such as the 70-200)... or even the 1x/1.5x/2x patent mentioned below.

So any guesses on when we might see a more universal TC?

Takumar Portraits

Well, the move from Texas to Arkansas is done. The Ozarks are absolutely beautiful. Anyway, I took my Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28mm f/3.5 and my Takumar 105mm f/2.8 out for a spin on the R. Haven't dragged the flash out yet.

I'm a bit out of the loop on EF lens prices & rebates with COVID, need help

Hey getting back into photography after a long pause

need to build up my gear kit to replace some of the lenses that were less critical but that I liked that I had to sell off

I know a lot of EF now are discontinued or in short supply, but I am wondering can anyone help with what are good prices these days (incl rebate) to pay for the below lenses? Also any of these looking to be d/c anytime soon? Hard to know whats a good price being out of the loop with covid shortages, RF stuff, and seasonal rebates.

EF 16-35mm f/4L IS
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III (not sure if I am gonna get this one or the f/4)
EF 35mm f/2 IS
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS

Thanks!

No discount for buying R5 kit?

The R5 can be purchased on its own or as a kit with RF 24-105 f4L. Normally when a body and lens are bundled as a kit it is cheaper than buying them separately. But in this case it actually costs a dollar MORE for the kit than if they are purchased separately! What's the deal? Can't they at least knock twenty five bucks off, if not more? Why would anyone buy the kit if this is the case (and pay a dollar extra)?

Canon officially discontinues a lot more EF lenses

Canon has officially discontinued more EF lenses. Some of them are already discontinued, others will be discontinued sometime in 2021.
Below are the additions to the Recently Discontinued EF lens list that I am constantly updating.
Discontinued EF & EF-S Lenses:

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L USM
Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Macro
Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 IS STM Macro
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM
Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM
Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L USM Macro

Lenses to be discontinued sometime in 2021:

Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM
Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM II
Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM II
Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM II

There seems to be some concern about the repairability of discontinued lenses. The information that I have received so far seems to show that the earliest these discontinued will be beyond their...

Here is the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro

Update: “SA Control” is spherical aberration control, this macro lens is also 1.4:1 magnification.
The first images of the upcoming Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro have leaked ahead of the official announcement, which is expected this month.
What is interesting about this lens is on the barrel. It says “SA Control” and there is a scale on the barrel. If you have any idea what that is, sound off on the forum! This lens still has the normal manual focus ring, as well as the control ring. So this is something new. Could it be related to a recent patent?
The official announcement date and pricing have yet to leak out...

A new Canon ILC has hit certification

Hot on the heels of the recent lens certifications, Canon has now registered a new interchangeable lens camera with a Russian certification agency.
The new camera is codenamed DS12856, for reference, the EOS-1D X Mark III had the codename DS126771. Cameras that begin with “DS” can also be for the RF mount and generally denotes an ILC. Unless there’s another Rebel in the pipeline, I would think that this is an RF mount camera.
I have an idea of what this camera is, but I will need to confirm some information.
I expect at least one camera announced before July, and this could be it.
More to come…

Really obscure and silly question about Canon LH-D12 lens case.

Well I finally found a factory Canon LH-D12 lens case to go with my 50mm f1.0. Because if you're going to have the most exotic 50mm lens Canon ever made, what is it worth without the fancy case that it came with?

Thing is, I'm not exactly sure how this case is supposed to be inside. When I got it, it came with the little chunk of gray foam just thrown inside the case, and the little loose piece of velvet fabric was shoved in the top, but with the velvet side facing away so you couldn't see it. I'm pretty sure that's not right. But what is the proper way these little pieces are supposed to go in the case? I'm guessing that little chunk of foam goes in the hole in the lid, and then that piece of fabric gets tucked in around it with the red velvet side facing out, so it makes a little squishy area for the rear lens cap to set inside when the case is closed.

There are very few photos of this case online, and the ones that are out there seem like they might be missing this piece of fabric and foam entirely. Does anyone have this case or one similar, and is that how it's supposed to go? I know this is splitting some massive hairs, but what's the fun in collecting a vintage lens case if you can't obsess about whether or not it's put together right?

Canon will release RF versions of the 300mm f/2.8 and 500mm f/4 in early 2022 [CR2]

As you may already know, Canon plans to officially announce the RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 600mm f/4L IS USM likely later this month. These are the first of many professional super-telephoto prime lenses for the RF mount.
The EF versions of the 400mm f/2.8 and 600mm f/4 were updated in September of 2018 to bring them to version 3.  Both the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM and EF 500mm f/4L IS were last updated in 2011.
I have been told that the RF versions of the latter lenses will come in early 2022 and that the new RF 500mm f/4L IS USM will be extremely light and much shorter than the current version. The 300mm is a bit more interesting, according to my source, Canon may actually release the RF mount version of the 300 f/2.8 as a zoom. Though there is reportedly a prime version also in development. I apologize for the confusion about the...
