Has anyone purchased a R5 in India?

Hi,

Looking to get input from those of you who have purchased the Canon R5 in India. Would appreciate if you could give me the following information:
  1. City where you bought it
  2. Dealer name
  3. Price
  4. Did you get a lens? If so which one and what was the price?
  5. What cards did you get and at what price?
In addition I intend to get the EF to RF adapter and a spare battery or two. I think I will purchase soon so wanted to get this input.

Thanks in advance.

Do Canon IS lenses park? Which ones? Ok if they don't?

I noticed that my Rf 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS lens exhibited a surprising amount of free movement of the visible part of the image-stabilization cylinder. With no camera attached, looking down through the front element, and gently tilting the lens in different directions, I can see the topmost element bumping and tapping against the inner-barrel.

When the lens is attached to a body with IS on, the movement is different, showing that the IS system is compensating. With the body on but IS switched off, the visible inner element is held rigidly.

From a new owner's standpoint, I was concerned that this movement I'm seeing might be more than what is normal for this lens, and that it could, over time, result in elements getting bumped out of alignment.

Some of you will have read my posts elsewhere asking for others to check their own lens. Since then I have had nearly two hours of conversations with Canon CPS, which has helped bring the issue into better focus.

Three CPS techs, two whom I spoke to directly, and one involved by relay, expressed surprise, because they thought the IS system would be parking when the lens was attached to a camera that had been powered off, or when the lens was not attached to a camera. We walked through the proper sequence for parking (something I had believed to not be relevant to newer lenses), and whether I powered off the IS while the body was still active or not, the 100-500mm's elements behave exactly the same--no parking.

Being the last few days of the year, and up against the weekend, the techs said that they are going to start "digging deeper" next week. They said they did have a surprising number of customers calling to ask about unusually loud IS sounds from the 100-500mm, but had not considered whether is was parking or not.

So my case is being looked into further. Naturally, in the meantime, I searched the web to find more about this issue, and only found two primary references (and a bunch referring vaguely or directly to the two I found).

First is from Canon, an article from Rudy Winston about noises from IS lenses, and about the procedure for parking IS lenses:

Canon U.S.A., Inc. | Whats-That-Rattling-Sound-From-Your-Image-Stabilized-Lens

The other is a briefer mention in a lensrentals.com blog post:

Lens Rentals | Blog

This leaves me wondering whether the 100-500mm should be parking. Common sense suggests that lens elements should be kept fairly well secured when the lens is not being used, so that the elements aren't gradually getting nudged out of alignment. (I think of it as analogous to hard disk drives parking when powered off.) Now I'm not planning to run cross-country with my 100-500mm, but I do hike and walk about 15-20 miles a week for fitness and health, and I'd like that lens with me most of the time. I'd like to know that it is not going to need an expensive realignment from time to time due to not parking properly. Being an early adopter is fun and exciting, but it also leaves us with no info about long-term issues.

I will, as expected, share what Canon CPS tells me next week, but in the meantime, anybody interested in this, please look at your own longer lenses with IS and share how they behave according to Rudy Winston's suggestion to let the IS system stop for a few seconds before turning off the camera. Do you see more movement if the lens is parked or not?

Maybe others here have been through all this. What exactly should be parking? How well secured should those elements be when IS is not energized?

I've checked my other RF lenses, the 24-70mm and 70-200mm. As might be expected, the 24-70mm has barely discernible movement inside when detached, and the 70-200mm a slight bit more--but it doesn't have that same freely bumping and tapping movement, maybe just because it is much shorter than the 100-500mm.

Happy 2021!

Need your advice on moving on from 5D3 to R5

Hi, so I am seriously considering purchasing the R5. I want a "larger than 20MP" camera. I have the 5D3 and the 7D2. I have used both for a while and now I think I need to upgrade. I had briefly considered the R6 but decided to go with the R5. I am going to be selling off my 7D2 with it's kit lens and keep the 5D3 with it's kit lens for a bit. Eventually I'll flog it too. I intend to keep my EF lens set for now - so that includes my 100-400 F4, 70-200 F2.8, 100 F2.8 macro.

I have the following questions:
  1. What were/are your experiences with the 100-400 F4 or the 70-200 F2.8 on the R5?
  2. Should I be looking to flog the EF lenses in a hurry? Eventually I guess I would.
  3. Did you face any issues with the EF to R-mount converter?
Look forward to your responses. Thanks in advance.

R5 at Night in the Snow

A couple of images taken at night from my front deck while a snow storm was tapering off. The lighting was from motion triggered LED Floodlights mounted to my front porch. I just snapped them out of curiosity as to what the night time capability of my camera was. It had my EF 100mm macro on it.

I pulled the blacks down a lot to try and hide the noise in the background. Lightroom tries to lighten it up but it was dark out. That's a tall tree so I could only get parts of it with a 100mm lens even over 100 ft away. The bird feeders were only 10 ft away. I was really pleased with the low light capability of the camera, its the best I've had.

We had about a foot of fresh snow yesterday.

Canon once against dominates rental market share in 2020

Lensrentals.com has posted their annual report on what gets rented the most over the course of the year, and once again Canon dominates the rankings. Canon actually gained market share, while Sony and Nikon saw a small decrease in overall rental performance.
Canon accounted for 25% of all rentals at Lensrentals.com, a slight increase year over year. Nikon saw a small dip and Sony fell just over 2%.

It looks like 2021 will be the last year for the EOS M lineup [CR2]

One of the biggest questions in the world of Canon is what will the company do with the EOS M lineup? I think most people, whether they wanted it to happen or not are resigned to the fact that Canon isn’t likely to spend resources developing the EOS M system.
I have spoken to two sources recently, and both suggested that 2021 will be the last year of the EOS M lineup and that the EOS M50 Mark II was a “stop-gap for a couple of future RF mount APS-C cameras”.
This is the first time that I’ve heard that there are two APS-C RF mount cameras coming, but it makes some sense. The EOS M lineup has its fans, and if Canon can release an APS-C RF mount camera around the same size as current EOS M cameras, they’ll have a winner.
Both sources were also adamant that there will not be RF-S lenses for APS-C EOS R cameras, but that future lens design will “fill the void of no dedicated APS-C lenses”...

Review: Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM by TDP

Bryan at The Digital Picture has completed his review of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM, the new “nifty fifty” for the RF mount. Canon has a long history of making these inexpensive 50mm lenses that provide good optics and great value, and the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM continues this tradition.
Compared to its EF brother:
In the image quality comparison at f/1.8, the RF lens has a slight advantage, primarily in the image circle periphery. By f/2.8, the EF lens may be slightly sharper in the center of the frame, and the RF lens is very slightly sharper deep in the corners. The EF lens has less peripheral shading, and the RF lens has less geometric distortion. Overall, the image quality difference between...

Petition for Canon to bring BACK interval & frame record to EOS cinema cameras. Please sign & share

Canon's EOS line of cameras have always included an "Interval" and "frame record" setting. These options have been integral to filmmakers and content creators who use the EOS line of cameras. The removal of these settings makes it harder if not impossible to create time-lapse videos and animated videos.

Canon took these away from the newest line of EOS cameras. We want these options back with a firmware update. The follow cameras in particular should have the option added BACK. CANON EOS C300 MK iii, CANON EOS C500 MK ii, and the CANON C70.

It is not right for Canon to take a staple option of the line away from us.

R5+ RF 70-200 Shooting speed and AF accuracy in servo mode ( quick-moving targets)

Hi!
I am interested in whether the AF accuracy really depends on the shooting speed and in the point of using H+ mode for quick moving subjects ( cars, skiers) etc.
From my experience I get only about 50-70% properly sharp shots when shooting fast-moving objects that approach me like cars with H+. It looks as if the AF motor is not speedy enough to refocus between the shots and around each 2'nd or 3'd shot is to a various extent back focused. It is especially pronounced when using mechanical shutter. (in case of mechanical can it be because of the blackout, which steals the focusing time from the AF? ) The keeper rate does not really depend on the focus mode or scenario.

If I use H mode I have a bigger % of keepers. So for me its is actually not much sense in H+ mode for quick ,moving subjects, as I have pretty much the same number of keepers, just more junk with H+ that eats memory.

Does anyone have the same situation? What is your keeper rate?

Canon Japan shows off Canon’s 8K Cinema EOS camera coming in 2021

Canon Japan has released a teaser for an 8K Cinema EOS camera, one of two 8K Cinema EOS cameras I expect will be announced in 2021. We’ll likely get an “A-camera” 8K camera above the Cinema EOS C700 FF and an 8K camera with a modular design like the Cinema EOS C300 Mark III and Cinema EOS C500 Mark II.
It turns out a marketing presentation was made at Inter BEE 2020 ONLINE a few days showcasing what Canon has planned for 8K.

CIPA: Less than 7 million cameras have shipped from Jan-Oct 202

https://www.dpreview.com/news/55975...s-mostly-recovered-from-its-covid-19-downturn

And I personally expect November-December 2020 to not ship more than 2 million digital still cameras (DSC).

A grand total of less than 9 million DSC shipped globally for 2020.

This would be the worst year since the all time high of 121 million back in 2010

Will it settle back again at about 1999's 5.06 million?

In 2019 the global shipment of DSC was 15.2 million vs 1.52 billion of smartphones.

That's a ratio of 1 DSC to 100 smartphones.

Camera makers are now focusing on camera features iPhones and Androids will have difficulty replicating due to their limited size. Though these "advantages" may not last long due to computational photography. The features are
  • Larger image sensors that allow for higher ISO and dynamic range
  • Super zooms that allow 35mm equivalent optical zooms of 20mm to 3,000mm
  • Better water resistance or ruggedness
  • Built-in photo paper printing
Even with the limited dimensions of a conventional smartphone R&D money from over billions of smartphones sold annually allowed for creation of
  • Larger image sensor: iPhone is now 47% larger than before & Android made improvements as well
  • Super zooms: Have been addressed by having more than 1 rear cameras with ultrawide, wide & telephoto zoom ranges
  • Better water resistance: iPhones 12 now can do IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes) & Android can do something similar as well
  • Built-in photo paper printing... smartphone makers are smart enough not to sell to hipsters.

The "perfect" wedding photography lens

Long story short: I may be shooting my first wedding next year for a friend I've known for 16 years. I most likely won't be charging him.

My question is, if you could take only one or two lenses to a wedding, which ones would they be? I really like the idea of only needing one or two fast primes, like a 35mm and either a 50 or 85. For any seasoned wedding photographers, what do you usually use? The body I'll be using is an R6.

When I got married a little over a year ago, the photographer had two camera bodies and was always going back and forth to her station to swap lenses and all that. I didn't mind at all, but it must have been very overwhelming for her since you could tell she was somewhat new to it. I don't want to be a chicken running around with my head cut off. I'd like to simplify the technical aspects as much as possible so I can put all of my focus into getting good composition and lighting.

Patent: More patents related to a new style of ILC from Canon

Canon News has uncovered a pretty interesting and pretty in-depth set of patents for what looks to be an interchangeable lens gimbal style camera, though there may not actually be a gimbal here.
From this Canon patent
In recent years, a video distribution service using a communication network such as the Internet has become widespread, and a user can upload captured video content to the video distribution service. Further, when a user shoots a moving image, it is required to shoot a moving image in a free posture in various situations and to take a moving image from various angles. As a related technique, an imaging device of Patent Document 1 has been proposed. The image pickup apparatus of Patent Document 1 makes it possible to invert the display of the display unit according to the orientation of the lens unit while rotating the lens unit...

R6 SD UHS-II Problems

Hi everyone,

5 weeks ago I got my R6 and I’ve been taking pictures and videos on a regular basis since then using 2 brand new Lexar professional 2000x uhs-II cards I got with the camera.

I had no problems until 2 days ago when the camera started to tell me that my card is too slow for 4k 24p or simply that it can’t record on the card in slot one or two. It tells me to format the card in camera and/or to take the card out and put it back in which I both did numerous times. It then works again for 2min or 30min or not at all until one of the error messages shows up again. Totally random and it can even happen when taking pictures (not the „too slow“ message but the „can’t record on card in slot 1) It happens with both cards whether I have both in the camera or one by one. I everything.

Unfortunately I only have those two uhs-II cards. They both work flawlessly when I put them in my PC, no files were ever corrupted, they are all there.

Could it be the case that both cards suddenly are slower or broke after 5 weeks and not much use or is this a camera problem?

The R6 is on the latest firmware.

Thanks for your help!
Dennis

Settings not glitches

The R5/R6 bodies add some complexity to taking photos. Here's an example of what I thought was a glitch but turned out to be a setting:

Usually I use Servo AF, probably 90% of the time, and I also use Spot Metering about that often. Occasionally, say for landscape on a tripod, I'll go with One Shot and Evaluative. I seemed to have trouble with my exposure in that combination, and I thought it was a glitch, or that I was doing something wrong. It was kind of on the back-burner of things to check into.

Then I came across this on page 773 in the AUG for the R6, something that I don't remember the 5DIV having at all:

1608813221096.png

This default setting produced unexpected exposure behavior when I was auto-focusing. But, as it was rare and fleeting, I didn't get right on it. Notice how specific this feature is! It only works in One-Shot AF!

This is one example. I've had some others but was surprised enough by this one to post about it.

Another was mentioned in a recent thread started by wyotex43n, asking why his/her histogram disappeared after an update. Turns out that Exposure Simulation must be enabled for the histogram to display in the EVF. It's these kind of specifically conditional new features that can make one wonder if there is a glitch...

Any other examples?

Saturn-Jupiter closest approach and Moon

Hello everyone!

Yesterday was an awesome day to witness and photograph Saturn and Jupiter conjunction with a super-tele lens. I was worried that the clouds may roll in but gods were kind! It was also the first time that I shot with a super tele (Canon 600 mm F4 IS + 1.4xTC) and I can now understand the efforts put by wildlife photographers. I am pleased with my entire experience although in hindsight I should have used a crop sensor camera instead of EOS RP. I have also shot the moon as I had the opportunity to do it.

The Saturn-Jupiter conjunction image is heavily cropped while the moon image is cropped to taste.

Comments and feedback is welcome.

Gear used: Canon EOS RP, Canon 600 mm F4 IS, 1.4xTC (II?)

Regards
Suman

Histogram not Displaying / Missing screen info

On my R5 with the latest firmware update when I toggle through the Screen information options I seem to be missing the screen that overlays the histogram on the image. This is missing in both the viewfinder and the screen view. I have all the boxes checked in the menu for both the VF and the Screen.
Anyone else having this issue? Is there some other setting I am missing.

A Canon Speedlite EL-10 is coming in 2021 [CR2]

Canon officially announced their new flagship Speedlite, the EL-1 back in October, and it’s still scheduled to begin shipping in February.
For the folks that can’t deal with the eye-watering $1099USD price tag, fret not, a more affordable version is coming in 2021.
I have been told that Canon will likely announce a Speedlite EL-10 in the 2nd half of 2021.
No specifications were given, but I think it would pretty easy to figure out what the EL-10 will be. One interesting note from the source is that the EL-10 will also use an optional rechargeable battery.

EFCS vs mechanical shutter DR and bit depth

So my R5 is on the way...

I've been reading all the threads I can here and elsewhere about shutter shock and when to use mechanical shutter, EFCS, and ES.

It looks like that for shooting landscapes on a tripod, recommended setup is IS off, electronic first curtain.

I have read that using ES decreases both bit depth and DR.

Is this true for both EFCS and full ES, or just full ES?

I was wondering if anyone could sum up the bottom line about his topic.

thanks!

Industry News: Nikon to end camera production in Japan

It looks like Nikon is making some major decisions during their restructuring. After more than 70 years, Nikon will end camera manufacturing in Japan and will move all production to Thailand by the end of 2021.
From Asahi (Google Translated)
At last, Nikon will end the domestic production of camera bodies that has continued for more than 70 years. Until now, body manufacturing has been carried out at “Sendai Nikon” in Miyagi Prefecture and “Nikon Thailand (NTC)” in Thailand, but in order to reduce costs, it will be concentrated at the Thai factory.
Production of the mirrorless cameras Z 7 and Z 6 was completed at the end of September, and preparations for the transfer of production to Thailand have begun in October. Production of the D6 digital SLR will also be transferred to Thailand by the end of 2021. (translated)
I do wonder how this will affect the used market, will a Japan-made Nikon D6 retain value better than a...

Can a lens make a camera's shutter behave differently?

I just got a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art for my R6. I noticed when shooting with it my camera's shutter sounds different, slower almost. But as far as I can tell it's working fine. It focuses properly and the exposures are all correct and everything. It freezes motion at fast shutter speeds as it should. Both the lens and camera are running the latest firmware. But the shutter definitely sounds slower and chunkier with only that lens on for some reason. Any ideas? Thanks.
