Canon R5 focus assist lamp half-blocked by rf 24-70 and RF 70-200

1) Hi all! I wonder if my af assist lamp is working correctly or is misaligned. The light circle that it emits is almost half blocked by RF 24-70 and rf 70-200, which drop a shadow on it. It is +/- OK and may be even better for central AF point since the is the border of light and shadow, that is almost in the center of the frame creating a contrast, but for example if I move a focus point a bit to the left the af-assist lamp is totally useless, since there is the deep shadow from the lens. In case of RF 35 mm its is not a problem, as the lens really short.

Do you have the same issue?

2) Do all the Canon R5 AF point have the same sensivity or like in DSLR cams peripheral points are worse? I noticed that in low-light conditions R5 focuses better with central points and in some cases can only focus with them, whereas side af point may be slower or fail focus at all especially when using wide lenses ( is that due to light fall-off?)

R5 histogram display while recording video?

Hi all, bought the R5 for stills but loving its video capabilities.
In my video cameras (Sony FS5, EX1 etc) I’m accustomed to using the histogram as an exposure aid.
On the R5 I can bring the histogram up on the rear screen, but as soon as I start to record video, it disappears. Anyone know if it’s possible to keep the histogram displaying while recording? And if so, please can you post the exact setting?
Thanks very much

An APS-C RF mount prototype is currently in the wild [CR2]

An RF mount camera with an APS-C sensor has been long rumoured since the launch of the EOS R system. Canon themselves will neither confirm nor deny such a camera is coming, which means such a camera is coming.
I have been told twice recently that an APS-C sensor equipped RF mount camera is in the wild with a select group of photographers. One of the sources claims that the APS-C camera “looks nearly identical to the EOS R6”, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise, I also expect specifications to be nearly identical as well. I get the feeling we’re past the point of test mules being in the wild, so the R6 comparison is probably quite accurate.
I do think we’ll see an “EOS R7” announced sometime in 2021.
More to come…

The Canon EOS R6 sensor scores a 90 from DxO

DxO has completed their review of the Canon EOS R6, and found the sensor to be quite capable, even if it doesn’t move the needle a ton. DxO gave the lower megapixel brother of the Canon EOS R5 a sensor score of 90, which puts it a point behind the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and 5 points behind the Canon EOS R5.
The sensor for the Canon EOS R6 is apparently built on the sensor from the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, and with the latter scoring a 91 from DxO, it appears that they’re closely related.
From DxO:
While the 20 MP sensor may seem an odd choice, this is a variant of the one found in the flagship EOS-1D X Mark III, and the results are practically identical. It performs well across the board with excellent dynamic range at all ISOs. Add to that the sensor’s good color and low noise, and the...

The Canon EOS R5 scores Canon’s best sensor score at DxO

DxO has completed their review of the Canon EOS R5, and has scored the new 45mp sensor 95, which is the highest score ever for a Canon image sensor. I don’t think this should surprise anyone that has used the Canon EOS R5, as the image quality is stellar from the camera.
The sensors that are scoring higher than what Canon has put into its new mirrorless cameras are BSI image sensors, which can be found in the Nikon Z 7, and Z 7 II along with the Sony A7R III and A7R IV. However, DxO has found that Canon has closed the gap considerably.
From DxO:
As for sensor performance, the EOS R5 sensor represents a high watermark for Canon. The maximum dynamic range is competitive with the best in class, and the R5 sensor offers a useful advantage at some crucial ISO settings over its rivals. It also has excellent color and...

The loose/wobbly top plate on R5 and possible sealing issues

Hi everybody!
I have noticed that the central part of the top plate around the hot shoe ( it covers wi-fi modules, hyroscope etc) is slightly wobbly at the far edges and does not fit tight with the rest of the top plate near the lens mount ( its edges protrude slightly above the rest of the plate around 0,5 mm). I can press it by the sides with fingers and see how it plays a bit. I have attached a photo, where I circled the slightly protruding part ( the photo shows the plate from one side only, but the other side is the same). I have asked CPS and they say that it is normal. I, however, doubt it and am afraid of potential sealing issues.
I would kindly ask the r5 owners to check if their plates are the same. Please check before you say "zero play in mine" :)) ( there are always people who say about zero play, when there is obvious play due to construction like with the IBIS rattle of stabbed lenses and bodies)

Thanks!

DxoMarks review of Canon EOS R5 and R6

DXOMark published their review of R5 & R6 both scoring pretty well.

Canon ISO Multiples of 160 - 1Dx3

In the past, Canon DSLR's have performed better in video mode with ISO's in multiples of 160. 160, 320, 640 etc... For example on the 5d2 or the 1dx2 this was the case. 640 was clearly cleaner than 500. Does anyone know if this is still the case with the 1dx3? I just picked one up, and the base iso in video is at 400, so I am wondering if this might no longer be the case.

Poll is now over.

Of course, given the recent release of the R system, it was to be expected that the "No" would prevail.
That said, more than 1/3 of you voters would still buy a 5D Mark V DSLR if it were to be released despite the very existence of the new R system. Impressive.

Why R5 Mechanical shutter shock so serious? Amost makes it useless.

Read the 1/100s mechanical shutter shock issue before and after purchase of R5. I did not take it seriously, as a DSLR user, i thought any shock is peanut compared with mirror flip.

But, suprisely, I'm not so impressive the image from R5. I felt my R5 is not always as sharp as my 5D (I,II,III,IV, i did not miss any one), most case, it's worse.

I started to suspect the shutter shock and decided do a test myown.

Camera settings, IBIS: On, Anti-flickr: OFF, Image format: RAW, AF Mode: Single, AF Method: Spot (centre)
Lens: EF 24-70/2.8L II + Ring
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 70mm
Shooting distance: 1.5m
Camera holding: hand hold
Explanation: mechanical shutter and Elec. 1st Curtain, take 3 photos at each of 1/60s, 1/100s, 1/200s, 1/400s, 1/500s shutter speed

1st, 1/100s, this is the major complaint.
Unlucky, my one is very serious, clearly blur with MS.

RF 100-500mm vs EF 100-400mm II vs 400mm DO II on R5

One of the questions asked about the RF 100-500mm is whether it’s worth upgrading to it from an EF 100-400mm II plus adapter. The consensus so far is that if you are starting from scratch, then it makes sense to buy into the RF system but if you already have the excellent EF lens then there is not that much to be gained by discarding the excellent 100-400mm II. Although the RF is back-ordered everywhere in the UK, some copies appeared on the European Canon site and I couldn’t resist one. The 100-500mm arrived Thursday afternoon and I managed to get some preliminary analysis when it hasn’t been raining from the point of view of someone who likes a lightweight lens for hiking and taking photos of birds, perched and in flight, close up and distant, and dragonflies and butterflies close up.

I have compared it on the R5 with the EF 100-400mm II f/5.6 and 400mm DO II f/4 with and without a 1.4xTCIII, in particular. In general, all three are spectacular for AF, both for latching on to fast flying birds and the eyes of closer ones. As for IS, I don’t see much of an R improvement in my hands when looking for pixel level sharpness and I needed to get down to 1/160s for 50% absolutely tack sharp at the pixel level at 20m.

The websites that report on lens sharpness usually do so at just one undefined distance. I want to know how sharp a lens is close up, mid distances and further away. So, I have done some tests using a UK £10 note at 3 and 6m, and black and white resolution charts at 12 and 20m. The RF 1.4xTC is arriving next week and I’ll report on the lens at 700mm then.

Optical Limits's Odd Review of Rf 100-500mm

Here's what strikes me as odd, as a bit of a let down from their former standards: "We had some trouble with the AF and IS combined with the EOS R but this has probably been fixed with a firmware update that came in after we finished the test already. "

But they seem to suggest they have also tested it with the R5 or R6? So why write as if they are in the dark at 500mm? And why would they publish the review without having tried the updated firmware which came out weeks ago? Are they just mad the firmware update came out after they'd put in the time and effort? In any event, their conclusion creates confusion! (Almost as if they didn't want to discourage Canon customers from clicking buy-links, but just weren't willing to try at 500mm again with new firmware.)

I see now, after doing a few tests of my own, how much work can go into them. But I don't run a website dedicated to tests and reviews! And this is a very expensive lens in high demand.

Judge for yourselves...

RED Komodo now supports RF lenses

For those that were either contemplating this system or considering this between the bunch of new mini-cine cams like the new C70, FX6, etc.. The newest Komodo firmware now has beta support for RF lenses. It looks like Iris, Focus MF and AF and IS is supported (but not the control ring or focus range switch). RF C-AF is as good as you can expect in beta right now, although if you are looking for Sony/Canon AF though, I don't think the Komodo would ever be your best choice.

Personally, I've had my Komodo since August shooting whenever I get the opportunity to between constant pandemic lockdown cycles and I've fallen in love with the RF-EF drop-in adapter with vari-nd filter since I don't have any RF glass. Earlier in the year, I couldn't find this adapter anywhere but somehow RED themselves had stock on them and those hard to track down BP-955 batteries, so I picked everything up from them and the clear glass drop-in locally and now I leave just the adapter on the camera. It's great except for the massive color shift near the last 1-2 stops.

Now I have to struggle whether or not to start transitioning to RF..

Patent: A zoom teleconverter, 1.0x-1.5x-2.0x

Canon News has uncovered a patent showing a really cool idea from Canon, a zooming teleconverter. We’ve had teleconverters for a long time, but this is the first time I’ve seen or thought about a teleconverter that zooms.
This teleconverter can be switched between 1.0x-1.5x-2.0x.
This teleconverter doesn’t appear to have the same sort of design as the current teleconverters as the element doesn’t protrude into the lens it is attached to. Could this sort of TC be for folks with lenses such as the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM that cannot take the latest RF teleconverters?
We’ll have to wait and see on this one, as the patent isn’t too detailed. If Canon can make this compatible with lenses that the conventional teleconverters are not, this will sell...

Patent: Canon RF 35-135mm f/2.8 and other fast zoom lenses

Canon News has uncovered a patent showing optical formulas for fast RF zoom lenses, likely of the L variety. The purpose of the patent is to showcase a high-performance zoom lens design.
Of the three embodiments in this patent, only the RF 35-135mm f/2.8 seems like a design that has a slight chance of becoming a consumer product.

Shipments

I've been watching a shipment from B&H as Fedex Home bounces it around the country. Its went by truck thru many strange places and apparently just 8 miles past my house North of Spokane and on thru Spokane to the tiny Prison town of Conell, Wa about 80 miles south of Spokane then Southwest to Portland Oregon 300 miles away. Eventually, it has to double back several hundred miles to reach Spokane for delivery tomorrow.

I've seen shipments from China arrive in Los Angeles, go to Alaska, then to the east coast, then to Seattle and back to Spokane, it makes no sense to me, but that was UPS and it happened the next shipment as well, so its just the fastest way to get here based on the available flights.

Fedex air takes a more direct route from New Jersey to Spokane for next day delivery. Even more amazing is that it works.
