The future of DSLRs may lay with Pentax, as Ricoh gives us a teaser for the Pentax K-3 Mark III

RICOH COMPANY, LTD. and RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. have been developing a new PENTAX K-series digital SLR camera, which will be positioned as the flagship model of the APS-C-format SLR lineup.
Currently, in development, the new camera now has its official name: the PENTAX K-3 Mark III.
Designed to be a camera embodying The Five Principles of PENTAX, it will incorporate an array of functions and features to highlight the significance of SLR photography, and to optimize the joy taking pictures for everyone with a passion for photography.
The product prototype was exhibited last year during the PENTAX 100th Year Anniversary event. At the event, we announced that it would be launched by the end of 2020 — and it is now in the final stage of development. Once the development is complete, we will streamline the camera’s production system. It has taken a bit longer than expected, so we appreciate your patience and wish to share already an overview of the product, as per the specifications...

The next firmware for the Canon EOS R5 is still on schedule for November

I have confirmed that Canon is still on schedule to release new firmware for the Canon EOS R5 in November, I was unable to confirm the same for the Canon EOS R6.
Here’s a reminder for what to expect for the next Canon EOS R5 firmware.

Canon Cinema RAW light addition
C-Log 3
1080p @ 120fps
Further tweaking of temperature control
Bug fixes
Other codecs are being worked on, but may not arrive in time for the November release.

I have corrected the post, I previously mentioned C-Log 2, but that is not confirmed.

85 RF STM in

The RF 85mm stm arrived today. Only some half hearten tests so far, but seems very good. Sharp and fast auto focus, but why does Canon always find a way to screw something up or to piss off the buyer? 1) at 850 dollars CDN, the lens hood is an option. IMG_6191.jpeg

I get it for a 200 lens, but at 850, throw the $#@^ hood in Canon!

2)
I totally disagree with the focus limiting choices.
I think anyone who would buy this lens as a street lens would like to have something in the area of 3 feet to infinity as a walk around focus limiting choice, but it is almost all (.5 m to inf) or nothing.

I have a portrait to shoot tomorrow and will see how it does in the field with off camera flash in a single shoot through.

Image quality of the Canon RF 24-105 mm F4-7.1 IS STM so good?

This is just for interest:
In the German magazine "Color Foto" the Canon RF 24-105 mm F4-7.1 IS STM lens is rated 102,5 Points.
(The Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM is rated 95 points, the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM is 103 points and the Canon RF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM is 91 points).
So, you get an extraordinary lens for just 500€?
Can anyone confirm this high ratings?

EOS R5/R6 Customization Tips and Wishes

Here's a catchall thread for customizing buttons and dials. Coming most recently from the R, I like having more buttons, but I'm a little surprised by a few limitations. Having used the 5DIV for three years before the R, I miss some of the default functions and the customizing.

One function that seems to have been demoted is Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC), which on the 5DIV shared a button with ISO. Now, on the R6, I'm seeing only two options for FEC. It can either be one of the items accessed by pressing M-Fn and then selecting FEC before adjusting, or it can be assigned to the lens dial, which I might come to like but seems a bit strange right now. No button can be dedicated to it.

Which brings up the forlorn RATE button, which might be very useful to some photographers, but I've never met one who uses it. I'd LOVE to see it customizable.

One thing that does look cool about the R5, it gains at least one customizable button with the little top-panel's LCD light button.

Any sharing of your customization, or hopes for a FW update that might bring a few more options, would be very interesting!

I think this thread could also be helpful for sharing how we use the C1, C2, C3 custom shooting modes.

Canon releases their Third Quarter 2020 financials

Canon has released their Third Quarter 2020 financials, and as one could have guessed COVID-19 continues to be a big challenge for the market.
Canon did have a bit of good news, as they have raised their full-year projecting for ILC’s by 500,000 units to 5.9million for 2020. The Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 have been excellent sellers according to Canon, even with the manufacturing challenges.
Imaging System – Cameras:
As for camera demand, amid ongoing market contraction, we expect a significant drop in demand due to COVID-19 this year. However, in the third quarter, the camera market was stronger than expected thanks to a gradual increase in image capturing opportunities as people became more active. Taking this into account, we raised our full-year projection for the interchangeable-lens camera market by 0.5...

Boling RGB light

I know there are many photographer/videographers out there that really like the Boling RGB lights with built in arm. Through midnight tonight, Oct 26, 2020, B&H has it on their daily specials sale for a very low price of $99.00, for anyone wanting this light. That's roughly $20.00 cheaper than the best price normally found on Ebay for this light.

Is Canon working on smartphone addons? This design seems to suggest that they are

Canon News has uncovered a smartphone lens add-on design by Canon.
On the surface, it looks like a lens addon, capable of different focal lengths. The different lenses in the design illustration seem to show that they are held together magnetically.
Canon has had some new designs and products such as the PowerShot Zoom over the last year or two, so it’s possible that this too will end up a consumer product.

R5 AF and needed shutter speeds

Hi everyone!

I’ve used my R5 plus RF85 and RF50 a few times now and wondered if someone shares my experience .

I find shooting ducks that 1/2000s is not nearly enough and the shots have visible motion blur. I haven’t seen this even at 30mp and didn’t think 45 would absolutely need at least 1/4000s with the fastest movements like ducks, kind of limiting...

regarding AF I’m not as impressed as many others, perhaps mostly surprised;
I’ve shot my cats as the easiest access to action, and I find Eye AF to only work occasionally, and I’ve shot a few sequences with them running and sometimes it tracks beautifully, but then when they’re just walking it misses 60% of the shots. I’ve tried a lot of settings and can’t seem to get any different results.

with birds it has been more impressive, but still some motion blur I don’t understand. IBIS both on and off

I know that the 85 isn’t the fastest, but it’s better with faster than slower movements. The RF50 is worse.

my question is; Have you found the same results with the same setup? What are you best AF settings for cats and kids running an walking? Every little detail is much appreciated. Wish Canon would release an AF guide for the R5 like they did for the 1-series.

on the plus side the IQ is pretty epic. I didn’t think I would see the difference in DR, but when I expose and know by experience what is clipped, it just isn’t. Good stuff.

I really hope I didn't just damage the sensor on my R5

Well, I had planned to do a time lapse of an approaching storm through my front window. But unexpectedly the sky cleared off to full sun. And, unfortunately, the sun was in the frame. As soon as I realized what was happening, and how bad it could be, I pulled the camera out of the sun. Looking at what was recorded on the time lapse, I estimate that the camera was looking at the sun for a little over 5 and a half minutes, with a 24mm lens. The time was around 3:30pm, and sunset here today is 6:38pm.

One big caveat, like I said it was through a window, and the window has solar blocking film on it. You can see out of the windows, but the amount of tint is about like wearing a pair of sunglasses, maybe a little less. You cannot feel heat from the sun through the window, which is the whole point of the film.

To see how strong the sun was, after I took the camera out of the sun, I held just the lens up to the sun, put my hand behind the lens, and moved it until the sun was focused down to a pin point on my hand. It didn't burn my hand or even feel hot.

The camera seems to still work fine. I took a dark photo and I see nothing weird. The sensor looks ok. So is it likely that the camera escaped unscathed? Is sun damage to cameras pretty much either it burns a hole in the sensor or it's fine, with little in-between?

I wonder when Canon will launch a great mirrorless body for expert / advanced non-professional photographers, at a fair (of course...) price ?

Hi, guys!
My question means R5 is intended for professionals /videographers and with an excessive price (and some issues to be solved). R6 is too short in terms of resolution and stills is paid for video. All the other mirrorless cameras have no IBIS and are older/weaker!
What so many of us would expect? I'd say a camera almost like R5 with no video at all, with a 'reasonable' price, or like R6 but with about 42 MP, with no video and a great price!!! Am I the only one to hope for such a camera? No! At least I know in my circle a dozen of friends. A small circle. I wonder how about all around the world!

I started with Canon in 1978 and did it with the great F1! All along all these years I bought the A1, the unique RT, the T90, and then EOS 5, EOS 3, then the 20D and the 7D! And stopped when something started missing. Then the age claimed for something lighter on my back. I needed Canon would also go mirrorless at a level of about the 'old' EOS 3. No video needed. There are many and many photographers! No videographers at the same time. Fair price. Waited and waited and finally, after 41 years of using Canon, I just bought a mirrorless Fujifilm X-H1 body, with IBIS, brand new, with Power Booster Grip and 2 more batteries for just 1050 €!!! Then, still waiting for a miracle, I bought the great priced fujinon 16-80mm f:4. And finally now, for my over 20 Canon lenses (FD and EF), I bought 2 great adapters to use them on my Fuji camera! What a great decision and save of money!
Ok, I must confess I still hope for such a camera from my first love, though each time more I start doubting Canon will do it! It looks like video overcomes photography as well as only (very) expensive or cheap cameras sell! In-between, towards the high end but for advanced amateurs (photographers, only), with a reasonable price... Canon put apart! And so, I guess so many canonists will change for more realistic brands in gear key specs (Fuji, Sony, Pentax,...). Pity, Canon!!!
Anyone thinking or hoping like me?

FedEx Option for Expensive Gear

I've had enough FedEx deliveries to now see a clear pattern in our area: Ordering what B&H calls "Next Day Super Saver" routes the gear differently, which means a crew different from the ordinary, free shipping option handles the packages all along the way.

Result? Instead of a usually unmarked truck driven by a guy who looks like he borrowed the uniform from somebody way too small, we get a smartly dressed, very professional delivery person in a clean van with the FedEx logo painted front, back, and both sides. All the packages in these vans are stacked neatly and securely.

Like a completely different company is doing the delivery.

For my R6, I paid just under $15 USD extra. Well worth it!

I hope this works for others, and saves them some of the frustrations I've experienced just defaulting to the free shipping.

R5/R6 Servo AF Cases...Tweaks?

Within a few weeks of the EOS R being released, we had some good, helpful suggestions for Customizing AF tracking sensitivity, acceleration/deceleration, and point auto switching. I'm not finding anything specific about this for the R5/R6 yet, but I might be missing some good links.

What experience and advice might CR members share about these options for the R5/R6? Do the 4 cases plus Auto meet most uses in the real world?

Any other AF setting tips?

Thanks!

Is Canon testing an 8K Super35 Cinema EOS camera? [CR1]

Canon Watch is reporting that a Super35 8K Cinema EOS camera is currently in field testing. I have been unable to confirm this information, so please treat it accordingly.
Unnamed Canon 8K Cinema EOS camera specifications:

8K 3.2μm Super 35mm imaging sensor
High-Speed 3D
Dual Gain Output
Dual Pixel AF II
Dual Native ISO
DIGIC DV X (Faster AF, Faster I/O, Faster UI)
DCI 8K 60fps 12b RAW
4K RGB (2-Green-pixel binning on the sensor) 90fps 12b RAW Output

I do not believe that the Cinema EOS C90 will be an 8K camera, so if this information is correct, it’s a new camera for the Cinema EOS lineup.
8K is coming sooner than later from Canon, the EOS R5 can’t be the only camera in their lineup capable of capturing 8K video. I don’t think we’ll see anything officially announced until at least April of 2021.

Why can't the R6 be used while it's being charged via USB

This seems like a stupid decision to me, the Canon R6 user manual states on https://cam.start.canon/sl/C004/manual/html/UG-09_Reference_0040.html:

Supplying power
To power the camera without charging batteries, set the camera power switch to
Power on
. However, batteries are charged during auto power off.
[
Supplying power
] is displayed on the screen while the camera is powered this way.
To change from powering the camera to charging, set the camera power switch to
Power off
.

It would be really nice to be able to set up a time lapse to shoot all day, which would be impossible with this restriction. Is there a way around this, or am i missing somethign obvious as to why this restriction is in place?

Review: Canon EOS R5 by DPReview

DPReview has completed its review of the Canon EOS R5. They come away very impressed with the camera, with the caveats that we’ve read about ad nauseam.
A couple of new things I hadn’t read about the EOS R5 from the DPReview is that dynamic range dips a bit when shooting with the 20fps electronic shutter as the camera goes from 14-bit to 12-bit when using the electronic shutter, which had overlooked until today.
There is also non-optional noise reduction applied to RAW files. Outside of those two things and how the camera handles heat for 8K and 4KHQ, there really isn’t much negative to say about the camera.
From DPReview:
The Canon EOS R5 is well-suited for just about any type of photographer, whether you shoot portraits, events, weddings, sports, family gatherings, and more. We’ve felt a bit let down by Canon’s promises of the...

"
Conclusion
The Canon EOS R5 is well-suited for just about any type of photographer, whether you shoot portraits, events, weddings, sports, family gatherings, and more. We've felt a bit let down by Canon's promises of the camera's outright video capability, but for most users, it's still a great option for getting good-quality video clips of almost anything you point it at. Power users that need the best video quality all the time won't be a good fit, but otherwise the EOS R5 is a fantastic option for almost anyone looking for a quality full-frame high-resolution mirrorless camera."

R5, R6 or wait for a possible R5S?

Hi all, I bought in August a Canon R5 to make panoramic images (using the nodal ninja rotating head), than use also for street photography, nature, events and so on (no studio, no weddings, no macro, no still life).
Someone suggested me to consider also the R6 since has a bit better EV (half stop) and smaller sensor (so in theory, easy to handle stiiching images and maybe better image quality on low light conditions). I have however decided to go for the R5 because the weather sealing and few other plus that that R6 does not have.
(The 8K video is not yet important to me as I do not do really videos...).

Now, I have used the R5 a bit and find great. However I see posts that a possible R5S might appear in 2021 or maybe 2022? I do not care about a larger file/image sensor, but of course a larger EV/low light image quality could be very interesting to me....

However I am not sure if indeed a made the best decision to buy the R5, or indeed was better to get the R6 or wait 1 year or longer for a possible R5 upgrade (R5S)?

Maybe I am just too paranoic?
Andrea
