Patent: Various RF mount zoom lenses, including an APS-C RF mount design

Canon continues to work on new zoom lens ideas for the RF mount according to this JPO patent, I can only see one lens below that makes sense for a consumer product, and that’s the Canon RF 24-70mm f/4 optical design.
Now hidden in here is an optical formula for what looks to be an APS-C RF mount optical design. The Canon RF 15-70mm f/4-7.1 has an image height that differs significantly from the other 4 optical designs, suggesting it’s for a smaller sensor. Please correct me if I’m wrong on that assumption.

R5 Dead Pixels

I recently switched from using Adobe Camera Raw to Canon DPP to process my RAW photos from the R5 (much better colour!). Unfortunately DPP doesn't seem to automatically remove dead or stuck pixels like ACR does.

Scanning through a couple of photos at 200% magnification I have so far found two dead pixels... one is right at the very edge of the frame and is not much of a concern. The second is unfortunately right in the middle of the frame and is a distinct purple colour.

This single, problematic dead pixel is obviously easy to clone out in post when shooting stills. My question though, is how likely is this to show up in Video? It will be more of a pain removing it from video footage I'm guessing.

Do any other R5 owners have some dead pixels, and if you do video work regularly how often do they show up?

Thanks!
Chris

Unreleased Canon ML-100 and ML-105 video cameras hit certification

A couple of unreleased Canon cameras have appeared for certification. The two cameras are called the ML-100 and the ML-105. They have the code names ID0148 (ML-100) and ID0149 (ML-105). The “ID” is the codename for a Canon video camera, the Cinema EOS C70 is ID0147 internally at Canon.
What are these cameras? They could be something new or new versions of the ME20F-SH and ME200S-SH, very niche and expensive cameras.

Pansonic just released their “box video camera” with the DC-BGH1 and perhaps these are to compete with the DC-BGH1. The new Panasonic retails for $1,999 USD.
The Canon ME20F-SH retails for $19,999 and the ME200S-SH retails for $4,999, so they are definitely playing in a different price bracket.

Let’s talk about the Canon EOS R1 development [CR2]

It’s no secret that Canon is developing an EOS-1D X Mark III level EOS R camera. We are calling it the EOS R1 until we’re told otherwise.
I have been told that this camera won’t simply be a mirrorless version of the EOS-1D X Mark III, but will be an “upgrade”.
Here are a few things I have been told by a good source, keep in mind that this far out from a product announcement, things can change.

An all-new image sensor with a global shutter
A “groundbreaking” new AF system, above the EOS R5/EOS R6
The fastest framerate for a stills camera ever from Canon
The second half of 2021 announcement

We’ve already seen mention of a full-frame sensor development with a global shutter, and this confirms that to some...

RF lenses for video similar to the S-lenses? Nano?

Hi group, I shoot corporate photography and video, I currently use the 80d with EF lenses but I own a backup set of S lenses for shooting video, (hate the stepper sound in my audio). Wondering if anyone knows if the RF lenses include the S lens nano technology for silent video during auto-focus. On a side note does anyone know if the S lenses would require the EF-RF adapter. Sorry I haven't been keeping up on the tech. side.... Best David

Canon EOS M50 Mark II information leaks out ahead of the official announcement

It looks like my previous specifications rumor for the EOS M50 Mark II turned out to be incorrect, let’s hope those specifications are for the second rumored EOS M system camera coming at a later date.
Below is some Google Translated information from Canon marketing material about the upcoming Canon EOS M50 Mark II.
Canon EOS M50 Mark II Information (Google Translated):

Canon Speedlite EL-1 information leaks out ahead of the official announcement

Below is some Google Translated information from Canon marketing material about the upcoming Canon Speedlite EL-1, which is the new flagship Speedlite for the EOS lineup.
Canon Speedlite EL-1 Information (Google Translated):
Stabilization of light emission amount and improvement of continuous light emission performance

By adopting a newly developed highly durable xenon tube, it suppresses variations in the amount of light emitted and realizes stable light emission.
Equipped with a newly developed active cooling system that uses a blower fan and glass panel. By circulating air inside the strobe, the temperature rise of the heat spot is suppressed. Heat resistance is improved by combining with a highly durable xenon tube, and the number of continuous light emission is about 160 times.

Help to understand Canon R5 LP-E6NH USB battery charging

I am struggling to find a way to charge alternate R5 LP-E6NMH batteries in a hide using a stand-alone charger base, a power bank and a USB cable. It's the stand-alone USB powered charger that is the issue. Nearly all those I see online talk about the lower mAh E6 and E6N batteries but few, if any, refer to the 2130 mAh E6NMH. I do realise that the in-body battery can be charged via the camera USB port, but this can only be done when the camera is turned off and I am trying to find a way to rotate two or three batteries to keep shooting capability

1. Is battery life a problem for others?
2. Does anyone have experience of doing this? Would be really interested to see how you do it :)
3. Will an E6 or E6N USB charger simply take longer to fully charge an E6NMH or doesn't it work that way?
4. Any good referrals on USB chargers, power banks or replacement E6NMH batteries?

Any info gratefully received!

Michael

Canon EOS 5DS and 5DSr bodies on sale at B&H

B&H has instant discounts and is offering both bodies for $1299.00 and $1499.00. Their site shows they will honor this pricing for backorder with expected delivery in 2-4 wks. Many Ebayer's are asking more than this for their pre-owned bodies. Don't know how long this will last. Could not find similar pricing when I looked on Adorama's website. Here's the B&H link.

EOS R5 Freeze /lock up issues

Many R5 and now R6 owners are experiencing freeze/lockup where the only option is to remove battery. Sometimes it will reboot also after about 20 seconds. It's not lens specific, it is occurring when using RF 70 200mm f2.8 lenses and 300 mm f2.8 mkii, 500f4 mkii , 100-400mm mkii plus a few more. This happens on my R5 once almost every day on a full 6 hour 500 image session with wildlife. Main circuit board replacement is what is being offered by Canon repair centres . You are unlikely to experience it taking a few images for a few minutes , give the R5 a good work out for a couple of hours and it will freeze/lock up. My friend in South Africa explains it here

Canon EOS R5 + any RF 35 mm = terrible back focus

Hi all!

I have encountered a following problem. Brand new R5 and brand new RF 35 with or without the newest firmware produce a terrible back focus for apertures above 1.8. At aperture 4.0 the back focus is the worst, resulting in the least acceptable resolution in the point of intended focus. I have also tried another copy of rf 35 and the problem persists. This problem sometimes vanishes by itself for no reason and the camera works well until shutdown. I have tried all kinds of settings to find out what might trigger it, firmware updates, all kinds of AF and modes- nothing helps. The only way I can achieve normal results is to mount a 50 mm 1.2 rf first ( flawless work) and then change it to 35 mm without turning off the camera. For some reason it will do a trick and a camera fill hit the focus at any aperture after that until shut down.

I attach a link with a couple of center crops of the target. They are both shot from a tripod at 1/1000 a second, AFS stabiliser off ( but nothing changes if it is on), aperture 4.0, iso 1600 ( yes ISO is high, no if you set it to 100 nothing changes), distance to a target is around 3 meters. One photo is taken after changing a lens from 50 mm, the other straight after I restarted a camera a moment later.

I also attach a center of a shot made at 1.8 aperture which is clearly sharper than the one made at 4.0 after the restart.

Why am I sure that is is a back focus? Because I ran several photoshoots and always saw focus on ears rather than on eyes. And because I tried gazillion shots on a ruler and I clearly see a problem.

What am I asking? I am asking the ones who have this combo to test it and see if the same thing happens. Just pick any target with small text on it like some package and shoot it in AV mode from a tripod or any steady surface at 1,8 and 4,0 apertures and watch if the resolution of the text downgrades.

What I am NOT asking for. Please do not advise to change my shooting technique or make any assumptions unless you do the test yourself. I made this test numerous times accompanied by a technician in a camera shop and I DO manage to achieve perfect results with other lenses or straight after changing the lens from 50 to 35 until I switch the camera off. I also tested another lens in another shop, same result. I already contacted an authorised Canon technician and will take the combo to him on Monday so you will have nicer pictures at 100 ISO, rulers etc.

I do know the Optical limits review, where they stated that 35 rf is prone to focus shift. The focus shift that they illustrated is incomparable to the one I get. Mine results in OOF images where at the sweet spot of the lens you get the worst results.

The crops form undedited raws are attached via the link

R6 Just came (possible battery charger issue)

I got my R6 delivered 10 minutes before I had to leave for work:cry: I only had time to get the battery charging. But after plugging it in, I noticed a sort of whine sound coming from the charger, like coil whine on high power electronics. I'm used to that with PC components, but never with a battery charger before. Do you think this is a normal thing, or should I send it to Canon for a replacement? I'd prefer not to try out a third party charger/battery right now.

Review RF 70-200 vs. Nikkor Z 70–200 by German fotomagazin

German fotomagazin did test RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM vs. NIKKOR Z 70–200 mm 1:2,8 VR S in its latest issue 11/2020.

Overal score:
5 of 5 stars for both
optics:
95 vs. 91 of 100
mechanical built:
90 vs. 100 of 100

Optically the RF wins in resolution, vignetting and distortion, esp. wide open up to f/5.6 with only more distortion @70mm.
Mechanically the RF loses some points because of plastic barrel (but it saves weight) smaller focus ring (but it is smaller) and little bit worse flare protection.
