A bit of a refresher on what’s next from Canon

The pandemic has certainly changed the cycle of product announcements and getting the gear to market. I see some positive things with stock on the EOS R5 and EOS R6 and hopefully, there are plenty of the Canon Cinema EOS C70 cameras to go around in November. The preorders for the latter have been really positive.
A lot of you continue to ask what’s up next from Canon. I do these posts from time-to-time as a reminder and hopefully bring some clarity to things.
Near Future Cameras:
Canon Cinema EOS C50
This was apparently supposed to be announced alongside the Canon Cinema EOS C70 but has been delayed, likely due to manufacturing challenges. For the moment, I do expect to see this camera until the first quarter of...

C70 Speedbooster for EF glass. Does this mean RF glass has smaller image circle? How does this all work?

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can explain this to me.
on the new C70, it takes RF lenses naturally.

For using EF glass it takes and adapter, but it is also a focal reducer/speed booster.

Why does EF glass require a focal reducer on this camera but the RF glass does not?

Does this mean that the EF glass has a larger image circle than RF glass?

If this is the case, how is this working on say, the R5? My understanding was that the EF - > RF adapter for the EOS stills cameras was not a focal reducer.

If this is the case, how does the RF lens work on FF camera along side of the EF lenses without a focal reducer there?

Clear as mud?

Thanks in advance,

Canon has purchased a Fujitsu FX1000 supercomputer to go “no-prototype” in product development

It looks like Canon is moving forward with their “no-prototype” product development with the purchase of a Fujitsu FX1000 supercomputer. Canon will take delivery of the system in the first half of 2021.
I would imagine this will help lower development costs, as well as make the development of new products more efficient and most likely quicker.
Press Release:
TOKYO, Sept. 22, 2020 — Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has received an order for a new supercomputer system from Canon Inc.
The system consists of a Fujitsu Supercomputer PRIMEHPC FX1000 unit, which harnesses top-class technology from the world’s fastest supercomputer, Fugaku, which was jointly developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu. The new supercomputer will achieve an expected theoretical computational performance of 648.8 teraflops.
Upon completion, the supercomputer will play a key role in contributing to Canon’s initiative...

Canon Further Strengthens Its UHDxs Broadcast Lens Lineup with New CJ20ex5B 4K UHD Portable Zoom Lens

New Broadcast Lens Features a Powerful 20x Zoom, Built-In 2x Extender and an Advanced Digital Drive Unit
MELVILLE, NY, September 24, 2020 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the launch of a remarkable new addition to its UHDxs series of 4K UHD broadcast portable zoom lenses: the CJ20ex5B. Within this category of portable zoom lenses, Canon presently has two models that are very wide-angle (4.3mm at their wide end) and four models that are telephoto (and consequently constrained in their wide-angle settings). Between these two groupings, Canon applied the latest in contemporary optical design technologies to empower the creation of a dynamic and versatile new lens that would simultaneously extend both extremes of the focal range – a wide 5mm and a telephoto 100mm – a game-changing focal range that is tailor-made for coverage of...

When the Canon RF mount was first introduced, imaging professionals began to dream about the possibilities that this revolutionary mount system might provide them. Just two short years later, those wishes have come true with the new C70 camera.

EOS R6 has arrived!

I know most of the back order woes out there are for the R5, but I placed an order for an R6 three weeks ago here in Canada and was told it's on indefinite back order, with no expected date.

Just got a phone call from the store who told me it just arrived and is ready for collection. They said they only received one and I'm next on the list. I guess their central warehouse received a batch and sent them to different stores.

Looking forward to getting my new toy!

The RF mount mirrorless version of the EOS-1D X Mark III is coming in 2021 [CR3]

I posted yesterday about Sony beating Canon to the “pro body” punch, think EOS-1D X Mark III when I say “pro body”. Intergrated battery grip, larger battery, and built better than G-Wagen.
I have been told by a great source that Canon will definitely be announcing an RF mount mirrorless version of the EOS-1D X Mark III in 2021. Likely in the second half of the year. Please keep in mind the current global uncertainty could obviously delay things. At the time of writing this though, this info is as good as gold.
I will call the camera the EOS-R1, which seems like a logical nomenclature for the king of the RF mount camera bodies.
The only information I have been told about the camera spec wise is that it WILL NOT recycle the EOS-1D X Mark III sensor.
More to come….

My first commercial photo shoot experience using the R5

I thought I would share a video I put together describing my experience using the R5 professionally for the first time. I also compare it to the Nikon D850's that I've been using for years up until this point. Although I'm no expert with the camera yet, if you have any questions I'll do my best to try and answer here or on YT.

Is Sony going to beat Canon to the ‘Pro’ mirrorless camera punch?

A new report from our friend at Photo Rumors has Sony bringing a “pro” mirrorless body in the first quarter of 2021. This would be a huge deal for Canon shooters waiting for an EOS R1, a camera I do think HAS to come from Canon in 2021.
The ‘pro’ designation on a camera body means it has an integrated grip to house a much bigger battery. It also gives more space inside the camera to add higher end cooling solutions and ergonomics.
Rumored Sony Pro Body Specifications:

 Bigger and truly pro body
 9.44M dots EVF
 Newly developed sensor
8K video recording with no overheating
 Dual card slots
 New menu systems from A7S3
IBIS with Steady shot active mode
Everything about this camera is new
Price $5.999

It was also reported that there are some of these pro Sony bodies out in the wild. Sadly, I haven’t heard anything specific about the Canon EOS R1.

A bit more about the rumored EOS R for video [CR1]

Canon Watch has followed up on its story about a video focused Canon EOS R camera. They have called it the EOS R5c, which is likely a placeholder. I’ll just call it the ‘EOS Rc’ for now.
It’s now being reported that the EOS Rc will have a full-frame sensor of “about 11.25mp”. For the record, the soon-to-be-launched 4K capable Sony a7S III is 12.1mp.
To me, this looks like it could be the rumored Cinema EOS C50, which is expected to be announced sometime this year.  Though the EOS C50 will use the Super35 sensor from the Cinema EOS C200.
I have not personally heard anything directly about an ‘EOS Rc’, so please take this information with a big grain of salt.

Getting 12 fps on eos r5

Hey

Just wondering what the trick is here?

I've seen on certain sites and reviews that to get the full 12fps the little h+ icon has to be green, but I've never gotten mine to go green

I've been using it with the new battery too, fully charged.

Is there some setting that has to be on or off to get it to work? I'm still using the default electronic first curtain and mechanical second curtain, maybe that should just be purely mechanical?

It's not the end of the world if I dont get the 12fps instead of the 10 or so I'm getting atm, but I'd like to know!

Thanks

R6 viewfinder image question and first photoshoot report

I used my new R6 for a serious photoshoot in the studio with a live model yesterday. I'm pretty impressed with the images. The 20 megapixel sensor is going to be plenty for my work and I can already tell my computer processes the images (Lightroom) faster than those from my 5D4.

I noticed one funny thing.... I had the model posed in front of a traditional mottled gray/white studio backdrop. The eye detection system kept finding what it thought were eyes or faces in the mottled pattern while ignoring the model. I do need to figure out how to tell the servo eye/face detect system where to look when it starts up. Once it locks on, it seems to be fine. I guess I could also switch out the mottled backdrop for a solid one.

One thing did seem pretty annoying. When I would bring the camera up to my eye, the viewfinder showed me the previous photo rather than the live action. I have no need to see the previous photo in the viewfinder, that's what the rear screen is for. I could not immediately find the setting to change that. Does anyone know where to find that in the menu system?

Thanks!

Looking at the R5 from a 5Ds user POV

Canon just lent me an R5 and some lenses to test - my main reason was to see how it compared with my 5Ds in the ways I use it.

There's a longish write-up at http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/looking-at-the-canon-r5-camera/ with picture examples and the like, with more of an overview on YT at

Hope it's of some interest! (all the kit went back this morning :-( )

Rumors of a Canon EOS R5c and EOS R5s [CR1]

While we have had numerous mentions of a high-resolution EOS R camera coming down the pipeline, Canon Watch is reporting than Canon will also introduce a video focused EOS R camera, which will be different than the upcoming EOS C50 and EOS C70.
I’m calling the cameras ‘EOS R Video’ and ‘EOS R high-resolution’.
A direct quote of specifications:

EOS R Video: has the same sensor technology as the EOS R5 but with half the resolution
EOS R Video: records 4K/120P with no crop
EOS R Video: does 2.8K supersampling in super35 mode
Both have a newly developed heat sinks
EOS high-resolution: has “double-width resolution sensor of EOS R6“  (This would put the resolution at 80mp if I’m understanding that correctly.)
EOS High-resolution: does 12fps
Dual Pixel AF performance in low light better than...

In praise of the RF 24-105/4L

Ten years ago I bought my EF 24-105/4L for use with my 12MP 5D (replacing a mediocre EF 28-135). Lightroom records that I have over 24,000 images in my collection shot with this lens (not including deleted images). So it has been my most used lens. I have just replaced it with the RF version and am very happy.
- On the R, it is noticeably more compact than the EF version with adaptor
- No zoom creep as yet, and the zoom lock switch is great). Indeed the lens feels more robust, although in fairness the EF lens was getting looser with age
- It is noticeably sharper than the EF version at longer focal lengths (85mm and 105mm), especially in the corners. The EF was always good at shorter focal lengths and the RF is slightly better wide open (with notceable improvements in the corners). In fact it compares well with my primes, which have now become special purpose wide aperture or macro lenses. And if resolution is critical, I use the primes on the 5DsR.
- Something not mentioned in reviews is that it is about 1/3 stop brighter than the EF version - at f/4, this helps!
- A big difference is that it allows the high speed viewfinder setting to be used and it is now possible to track subjects when panning - this was impossible with the EF lens.

What's not to like? The lens has a noticeable warmer cast compared to my other lenses.

Looking forward to f/4 versions of the 16-35mm and 70-200mm!

Buffer, Speed, and Cache......2 Cards R5

All,

So much information is available but I am asking for some "real world" experiences using both card slots in the R5 for still images. I am accustomed to using the second slot in my 5Div for jpeg backups....just in case my RAW images to the CF get lost or corrupted. Now, with the R5, there's CFexpress + UHS-II SDXC slots. I know the read/write and buffer of the CFexpress is significantly higher than the SD speed. If I set the write to RAW on the CFexpress with the SD set to JPEG or HEIF "L" backups, what happens to the camera during use? I almost never need 20 frames per second nor even rarely use more than 8. Will the buffer take noticeably longer to clear? Does the frame rate slow dramatically?

There are numbers posted with speeds and frames but I'd like a subjective response from those of you with the camera in their hands using both cards simultaneously. How does the experience "feel" to you?

Thanks for your answers.

JPAZ

RF 100-500mm vs EF 100-400mm II + EF-ER adapter

It looks like I will be getting next week an R5. I do have two very good copies of the 100-400mm II + 1.4 and 2xTCIIIs and was intending to use one of those. I do have the opportunity of buying an RF 100-500mm, which is a serious outlay, especially with the high cost of RF extenders. I'd love to hear reports from those who have compared those lenses on the R5.
