Canon USA updates expected availability of the next allotment of Canon EOS R5 cameras

B&H Photo has sent emails to folks on their preorder list about the next shipment of the Canon EOS R5, and it matches what we have been told by Canadian retailers such as Downtown Camera.
It looks like we won’t get any more R5’s in large volumes until the end of October at the earliest.
From B&H Photo:
In our last email, we shared that Canon R5 preorders were very strong and Canon’s deliveries to US retailers have been extremely limited. We also promised to send regular updates. Since that note, we received an updated shipment schedule from Canon. Based on this latest information from Canon, we expect to ship your order before the end of October. Please note that this information could change if Canon updates its schedule.
Thanks Luke

Is the ultimate astro lens coming? Another RF 14-21mm f/1.4L USM mention [CR2]

I have been told to expect a “world’s first” wide-angle zoom lens from Canon in the next few months, the official announcement date and shipping date are unknown at this time.
The source claims that a Canon RF 14-21mm f/1.4L USM is currently being tested by select photographers. We’ve seen a patent for such a lens in the past and I have heard mentions of this lens a few times over the last year or so.
There are a couple of other crazy lens designs I’ve heard about that I hope to let you all know about soon.
More to come…

Let’s get one thing out of the way in the first sentence. If you’re here to understand the mysteries of thermal flow in the R5 I can tell you everything I know without opening the camera up: It’s small, it’s weather-sealed, and photo-body...

Review: Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM by TDP

Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the brand new Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, a lens that will take the place of the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM for the RF lineup.
Bryan came away super impressed with the lens.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens set the bar very high, but the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM Lens has cleared it. Only six years after the EF 100-400 L II was released, the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM Lens is on the streets. Featuring a lighter weight and longer focal length range, this lens surpasses the impressive predecessor in many regards and gained immediate strong popularity. This lens and I are going to spend a lot of time together...

Are 32 MP too many? EF-M 32 mm 1.4 on M6 II

Usually the videos of Mr. Frost get shared on this site by others anyway. But as I haven't seen this one mentioned jet, he evaluated the EF-M 32 mm 1.4 on the challenging 32 MP M6 II sensor:

The take away for me: The lens is super sharp and despite how tiny and relatively inexpensive it is, can handle these resolutions just fine. Also gives me confidence that much larger and more expensive RF glass will be suited very well for upcoming monster sensor such as the rumored 90 MP one. (Not that I doubted it, but you never know).

R6 not using full LCD screen for still image playback - can you help?

I'm switching from a 5D4 to an R6. On my 5D4, still images would be displayed on the rear LCD screen at a size that almost completely filled the screen.

The R6 shrinks the image and leaves a substantial black border on all 4 sides. Does anyone know why it does that, and is there a way to make still images fill the entire rear screen?

I know the viewfinder can be set to give you a smaller image, so I tried changing that to see if it affected image size on the rear screen - it doesn't.

Thanks for your help!

Patent: Another stacked CMOS sensor patent

Canon News uncovered another in-depth patent for a stacked CMOS sensor. This is an area that Canon has been spending considerable R&D resources on over the last few years, but we have yet to see a product for the masses come from this investment.
According to Canon News, this patent looks at ways to reduce the costs associated with stacked sensors. In this case, they’re attempting to lower the costs of adding bypass capacitors into the sensor.

Recently, a solid-state imaging device has been proposed that by stacking a plurality of semiconductor components. The solid-state imaging device described in Patent Document 1 includes a plurality of stacked components, the first component is provided with a pixel portion, and the second component is provided with a read-out portion for reading out a signal from the pixel portion. .. In addition to the first component and the second component...

The Canon EOS ‘R5s’ may be in the hands of testers [CR2]

One of the most talked-about future EOS R camera bodies is the RF mount replacement for the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R cameras. Which means a lot more megapixels than the 45mp of the Canon EOS R5.
We’re naming the camera ‘R5s’ for now.
I have been told that again, a small group of photographers have the high-megapixel body in their hands as it’s going through the first phase of testing as a finished product. This source claims that the new sensor is “around 90mp”, which would be quite the bump in resolution over the EOS R5, and would put the cameras into two completely different segments.
Beyond the increased megapixels, I was also told that the EVF will be larger and higher resolution than the EOS R5.
I wasn’t told when we could expect to see this camera announced, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Canon doesn’t yet know either. They are going to have to remedy the production quantity issues for both the...

Mounting & dismounting an EF-EOS R adapter... Should I worry...?

The instructions for the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R specifically say to first attach the adapter to the EF-lens, and then attach the now adapted-lens-combo to the camera. The instructions further say that to remove it, you follow the same procedure in reverse. Okay... But what kind'a horrible things could happen if I just leave the adapter attached to the camera (all the time) and simply swap-out different EF-lenses as needed? I'm really hoping that everyone just tells me not to worry so much... I'll even promise to turn-off the camera all the time...

Canon Australia to close their online store to support retailers

I’ve always found it odd that Canon forces retailers into MAP (Minimum advertised price) pricing and then competes directly against those retailers with their eStores. It’s nice to see Canon Australia making this move.
From Canon Australia:
This notice is to inform you that Canon Australia will be ceasing the operation of its direct to consumer marketplace – Canon Store – for the foreseeable future, effective from 30 September 2020.
The Canon Store was launched in 2011 as an ecommerce platform designed to expand online shopping options for local consumers. Fast forward to 2020, the unprecedented challenges currently facing the Australian market has seen Canon Australia re-examine the best way to help consumers access our products, services and support. As a result, we are proudly streamlining our efforts in supporting local retailers to drive competition in the local market and bring you the best value product offers, promotions, services and experiences possible.

7D II alternative?

As I mentioned elsewhere, some foolish forgetfulness on holiday has killed my mk I 7D - while everything was fine when I finished using it, putting a still wet camera in my still wet camera bag, then just slinging it in the car boot overnight rather than (a) removing the battery and (b) bringing it in the tent to dry out has wrecked the electronics that communicate with the lens for AF and aperture.

A mark one isn’t even worth the excess on my insurance even if I thought I had a good case to claim, but obviously I don’t want someone else’s 10 year old camera. The problem is, though, that the 90D looks pretty shocking on the AF front for birding from what I’ve seen on YouTube, the obvious choice of a mark II seems silly when it’s five years old and discontinued practically everywhere, and while it would be nice to have the full frame sensor for non-bird stuff, neither a 6D II nor the affordable R models have the pixels if I have to crop. I’d somehow got it into my head the R6 would be a 6D killer, but not at £2.5k.

Is there really no good option other than a second hand 7D II unless I either wait and hope for this mythical crop-frame R or start saving for an R5? As a mere hobbyist that last one doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon. Any suggestions are extremely welcome.

Canon R5 or R6 with $5k budget

Hello everyone,

i decided to sell my RP with hopes of getting the R6. I did get it but have not opened it since the RF 24-105 is still out of stock. Upon reading more reviews it feels like the R5 is still praised as the best and the R6 just so so. I am shooting family events, kids band concerts, upcoming graduation, running dogs, landscapes, water skiing at the lake. Basic stuff. I do like to travel so would want the kit to stay relatively small as I have owned 5d/1d in the past and they were just never brought out to gatherings.

I have a budget all in of $5k or so and find my self thinking option A or B.

A: R6 body, Rf24-105, rf 35mm, RF 24-240, RF 85mm F2, speedlite El-100

or
B: R5, RF 24-105, speedlite EL-100, cfexpress card

kinda stuck on is it worth the bare necessities so I can crop deeper into photo’s, better 4k video or a more rounded kit.

any input or suggestions are appreciated.

R5 vs R6 4K 60 FPS - Is R6 actually higher quality?

Hi guys,
I’m considering getting either R5 or R6 for video and from what I understood R5 can’t do 4K 60fps HQ. It can only go to 30fps.
VS R6 does have “HQ like" 4K 60fps oversampled from 5.1K.
My understanding is that because R5 oversamples from 7.2K in HQ mode, there’s just too much to process for 60fps. And it does 60 and 120 fps line-skipped only.

Do I understand it correctly?

Couldn't find it mentioned in other topics so created this post :)
