What is the maximum aperture at 400mm on the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM?

A question that I personally wanted to be answered has been answered at The-Digital-Picture with the help of Canon USA.
The answer is actually quite interesting.
What is the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM Lens’s maximum aperture opening at 400mm?
Answer 1: When the camera is set to 1/3-stop increments, the maximum 400mm aperture is f/6.3.
Answer 2: When the camera is set to 1/2-stop increments, the maximum 400mm aperture is f/5.6.
Keep in mind that on variable aperture lenses, the camera doesn’t read what the exact aperture is
I would hypothesize that the lens is actually something like f/6 at 400mm and the increment settings just decide how the camera reads the aperture. Rarely are apertures 100% accurate on variable aperture lenses. I haven’t yet seen a patent with this exact optical...

100-500 max aperture at 400mm communicated by Canon

A number of you were asking about this, so here you go:

Depending on whether you use 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments, there are two different answers. But it can be f/5.6 @ 400mm if you want it to be.

Does the R5/R6 handle toggling between the EVF and rear screen any different from the EOS R?

One thing that I never liked about the EOS R but learned how to deal with is that you couldn't really configure it so that the rear screen worked similar to a DSLR.

Ideally, I'd like it if you could make it so that the rear screen can be switched off except for reviewing images or navigating menus, like a DSLR. So ideally when the camera is in normal shooting mode, the screen is off and the EVF is off to save power, but the EVF comes on as soon as you put it up to your eye. But when you remove your eye from the EVF, I don't want it to switch to shooting on the rear screen. The screen should only turn on if you hit the buttons to review photos or pull up the menus.

On my EOS R, I just assigned a specific button to put the camera to sleep so I could shut off the screen when the camera was away from my eye but still on. But that's always been a really clumsy solution and I wish the screen could just be deactivated unless you want to review photos or menus.

I also realize on the EOS R that you can set a button to manually toggle between the screen and the EVF, but again this is kind of clumsy and not quite what I'm looking for.

Canon releases an official statement about the EOS R5 and EOS R6 heat concerns

There has been a lot of concern recently about how the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 handle heat when recording 8K and 4K video. Canon has released an official statement on the issue.
From Canon:
Details Regarding Canon EOS R5/EOS R6 Overheating During Video Recording
The EOS R5, one of the latest additions to Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera line, offers class-leading autofocus with high-resolution and high frame rate video recording options using the maximum width of the full-frame sensor at high bit rates. Inevitably, this combination of features has the potential to generate some significant heat, which will limit recording time.
Canon has taken several steps to manage the potential for overheating, including:

Magnesium alloy was used in the body to dissipate heat away from internal components

Neowise from Spokane

Finally, we have clear weather, and I took my EOS R out and set it up to try and find Neowise in the evening. With the naked eye, its barely visible as long as you know where it is, and at night, there is no beautiful mountains or other geography to add for accent. Then, my 100-400L with a 1.4X TC required a ISO 32000 to 40,000 with a 1.0 or 0.5 sec shutter speed. I did not rig a remote release, so my pushing the shutter button ruined many tries. I'll use my cell phone for a remote next time.

In any event, its a first try, and with a huge amount of NR, I managed a photo that looked decent. This with my EOS R, EF 100-400mm + 1.4X TC at f/8, ISO 3200 1 sec exposure.

Anyone have experience with EF lenses on R series with the adapter?

Hello 1st post,

On the fence about the 24-105 lenses, I own a full spectrum of EF L lenses. I shoot still and corporate videos. I have always wanted the 24-105 for the range but only for PR jobs. In video I need 4k 60 and the new R6 seems to fit but scared to buy the RF24-105 vs EF24-105 in case I hate mirrorless. However, maybe DSLR's are dying... So anyone have any experience with the EF adapter on an R or RP or maybe R5/R6 if someone has one. Thanks David

Dear Canon... R5 and R6 Firmware Upgrade and Feature Requests

Greetings CanonRumors members and Canon enthusiasts,

After the exciting announcement of the R5 and R6 last week, we learned a lot about the new features that will be available in these cameras. Canon has indicated that they are listening to user feedback, and will hopefully be making firmware improvements to these bodies based on customer experiences once we start receiving the cameras. These improvements are likely to include both new functionality and refinements to existing features.

Do you have a firmware upgrade and/or new feature request for Canon? If so, please add it as a reply below (one idea per reply). If the feature that you are hoping for is already listed, please use the like ((y)) feature, so we don't wind up with a ton of duplicates, but Canon can also see how popular that idea is.

With any luck, Canon will see the consolidated feedback from this thread and hopefully incorporate it in future firmware releases. Let's make it easy for Canon to incorporate your great ideas!

What’s next from Canon?

As with any rumor site, once products are announced the inevitable question is what’s next? I have some information about what’s next, but there is still some areas of the Canon lineup I don’t have much information about.
RF Lenses

RF 50mm f/1.8 IS STM
RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
RF 18-45mm IS STM
RF 100-400mm IS USM
RF 24mm f/2.8 IS STM Macro

I expect that both the RF 50mm f/1.8 IS STM and RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM will be announced in late August or early September, but I have not confirmed that as of yet.
The other 3 lenses are likely being held over to 2021.
There are other L lenses in the pipeline too, likely for late 2020 or early 2021.

RF Accessories
I am told a bunch of “cool” adapters for the RF mount are coming in 2020, I cannot clarify what the adapters are at this time.
EOS R Cameras
There is no other EOS R camera scheduled to be announced in 2020, as always, that can change.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see the lineup get an update to the EOS RP and a...

Canon says preorders for the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 have exceeded expectations

I usually mock Nikon when they say these sorts of things, so I guess I’ll eat crow here.
Canon Japan has said that preorder numbers for both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 and some accessories have exceeded expectations and supply may be affected.
From Canon Japan (Google Translated)
We have received orders for the following products announced on July 9, 2020, that exceeded expectations, and it may take some time before the products are delivered.
[Applicable Products] EOS R5/EOS R6/Battery Grip BG-R10/Extender RF1.4x/Extender RF2x
We would like to thank you for all...

Feature updates coming via firmware for both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6

It is being reported to myself and others that Canon is going to be releasing feature updates to both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 via firmware.
Rumored Canon EOS R5 Firmware Update:

FullHD 120p
Adding a low bitrate mode for RAW & IPB in all recording modes
Canon Log 3

I do find the mention of FullHD at 120p confusing, as the Canon USA site shows FullHD 120p as a feature already.

The Canon USA Pro Twitter account says it’s supported.

Full HD 120fps is supported. The EOS R5 specification information...

Some CF Express Card Tests

I purchased CF Express cards for the coming R5, and they arrived over the past few days. Three different types. I did the Black Magic Disk Speed Test to each and thought people might appreciate the results. This test does repeated read/writes to the card to simulate real world video file use.

Delkin Devices CF Express Power (512GB)
Read: 1450 MB/sec
Write: 1120 MB/sec

Sony Tough CF Express G (512GB)
Read: 1050 MB/sec
Write: 1050 MB/sec

ProGrade (Gold Bar 256GB)
Read: 1250 MB/sec
Write: 950 MB/sec

The tests were performed about 10 times each. Card reader was a Sonnet reader with Thunderbolt 3.

The Sony card was abysmal, as it was the most expensive and claimed to be the fastest (1700/1480). The Delkin claimed 1730/1430 and wound up being the actual fastest by about 10 percent. The ProGrade with gold stripe is supposed to be 1600/1000. I have a ProGrade with black stripe (claimed 1600/1400) coming in and will add those results when it's tested.

R6 as a vlogging camera ? what are my lens options?

Hi Guys,

With EOS R6 new IBIS system of up to 8 Stop of shake stabilization and 4K 60p/180 - 120p, sounds very tempting for me who does causal video recording / blogging ontop of photography.

I would like know what are my lens options? (RF / EF or third party OEM lens)

Can I use Canon EF-S / EF-M lens on EOS R6? will there be any degrade in video quality?

if i use a gimbal together with EOS R with the approved RF IS lens , can i achieve more than 8 Stop of Shake stabilization?

thanks!

Canon 1DX iii or Canon R5 for wildlife photography?

I currently have a Canon R5 on pre-order but i feel like i could be making a very expensive mistake.

Firstly i want to say that i own the canon 1DX ii and that i am a wildlife photographer. I am interested in the R5 due to its animal AF capabilities and the 45MP. I feel that it will be beneficial to me.
But i also feel as i am used to the 1DX then maybe the R5 isn't for me, Smaller form, not as rugged, the battery life does concern me a little also.

I have thought about getting the 1DX iii but it doesn't have the feature i am most looking forward too (animal AF)

Do you think that a R5 would be a good purchase if you owned a 1DX ii? would you consider it a downgrade even if it would be an additional camera (still keep the 1dx ii)

If you owned the 1DX II and was looking at getting a new camera what would be the deciding factors against the 1DX iii & R5

Do you think the R5 animal AF is not a big deal against the 1DX iii AF?

I would love to hear peoples opinions, i feel it could make me look at things in a new light.

I have worked out that it will only be around £1500 in difference between the R5 & 1DX iii after i have brought the grip, another battery and a card for the R5

Overheating not an issue with external recording?

My apologies if this is well understood already, but I haven't found any clear answer for this. Is the current belief that if you are using an external recorder (like Ninja V for example), then 4K 60p will be unlimited and there will be no overheating issues? My intended use is that I'll usually be in a fairly fixed studio set up where I won't mind recording externally, and will only be using internal recording on rare occasions -- should I thus be fairly unconcerned about overheating *even if* the worst fears of its effects are true? Basically, I'm wondering if there is a similar table to what we've seen for internal recording limits/temperatures/etc. for external recording.

Is it just me or are the sample images from the R5 the most unimpressive photos you've ever seen?

I pre-ordered this camera before the announcement on Thursday and have been very excited to get this thing in my hands. Today i noticed that if you right-click on the "sample images" on Canon's website you get can the Full res Jpgs (8K)

Lets look at some of these images

Whats in focus here?

Shot at iso 400, look at the noise on the right side of his face, not to mention the terrible CA. Whats in focus?

Missed focus? the couple looks like they were shot on a green screen and pasted on to this image and smoothed out.
