Believing in scores - or not

DXO posted it´s sensor score on the 1DX III.

For my friends, who own this new body, the score is rubbish. They report the III is better than the II in low light situations and noise too.
So, believe in this score - or not.

My personal experience with the Sony 7R mk IV (that is scored around 99) is not that good. A lot of noise about 400 ISO. There my 8 points lower scored 5 D IV has lesser noise - on the same lenses and situations. So, this score is nice, but in real life meaningless.

Video While in M, C1, C2 not behaving like I’d hoped?

Hey friends,

I’ve been using the Canon M50 for the last year and a half, and recently added the M6 Mark II to the stable. I know the Canon menus inside and out and have them both configured exactly to my liking and they work well together for continuity. 50/50 for video and photo. True hybrid shooter.

The reason I picked up the Mark II was for the Custom (C1 and C2) settings and being able to switch quickly between 23.98 and 59.94 frame rates and respective shutter speeds of 1/50th and 1/125th. The switch is fairly seamless although I don’t like the fact that you can’t set C1 or C2 up for dedicated video modes. They’re still photography focused with just video added on. Much like the Manual mode. Very annoying. I wish that they would allow a custom setup menu for Custom modes to start from the top as Photography focused or Video focused and go from there. But I digress...

THE MAIN QUESTION: why is it when in M, C1, or C2... and I have the ISO locked at 100... when I hit the record button, there’s still some auto metering/exposure changing happening and I DON’T want that. I’ve gone through the settings several times and I can’t find anything in auto for exposure changes while video recording.

Am I missing something? I don’t mind being humbled if its something real apparent that I’m overlooking.

Thanks for any help on this.

How much difference between RF 24-70 2.8 & 28-70 2???

As an coming R5 user, I am willed to change my <200mm zooms. The 70-200 IS has been sold, also all EF zooms 2.8 L are gone.
I will definitively get the RF 70-200. With wideangle lenses, I am thinking of not buying an zoom again (there is the EF 16-35 4 L IS still in my pocket) - better 3-4 primes for better IQ. Later on, the RF 85mm and the 50mm RF will follow. Later on, because of pricing...
So, the 24-70mm zoom range is open. And I am not sure, which lens to buy. The RF 27-70 2.8 or RF 28-70 2.0
I do not think, I will notice the 2.8 to 2.0 in case of brightness and bokeh difference. But all tests I read, saw the 2.0 lens 20-25% sharper at >35mm (up to 70mm).
So I wonder If the more weight (I will use the lens as an "always on" at walking and hiking for landscapes) and the €800 plus is worth the money.
Are RF users in the community that can place their practical experience here? (optically and handling)

Here are more Canon EOS R6 Specifications [CR2]

Here is the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6, along with the announcement date

I asked, and my sources came through. I now know the announcement date for the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6, and new RF mount lenses.
The big day? The official announcement will take place on or around July 9, 2020!
Canon products being announced on July 9, 2020

Canon EOS R5
Canon EOS R6
Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 IS STM
Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM
Canon RF 100-500mm f/4-7.1L IS USM
Canon RF 600mm f/11 DO IS STM
Canon RF 800mm f/11 DO IS STM
Teleconverter RF 1.4x
Teleconverter RF 2x

The image below seems to be missing a couple of lenses, most notably the RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM and the RF 50mm f/1.8 (I think), so these probably won’t ship until Q4 of 2020.
The same source has told us that the Canon EOS R6 body will ship in August, and that the Canon EOS R5 won’t begin shipping until September. Ship dates have been a moving target thus far, but that falls in line with my original leaks that the EOS R6 would...

The exact announcement date for the Canon EOS R5 is still unknown

*Update* July 9, 2020, is the official announcement date.
The Canon EOS R5 is definitely coming in the first part of July, so let’s get that out of the way off the hop.
Which date exactly? I can honestly say that I don’t know. I have now received 4 different announcement dates.
The four dates floating around my inbox are as follows.

June 30
July 2
July 6
July 9

Keep in mind that timezones may change the date in your country for the announcement.
So, not much changes, we’re still going to see the Canon EOS R5 in all its glory very soon.
The next time I post about an announcement date, I will know for sure!

Extension! Don’t miss out, the 5DayDeal Video Creators Bundle 2020 sale has been extended 8 hours

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is a very real thing, and when exclusivity is involved, the anxiety it spawns tends to be intensified.
If you are still trying to determine if The Video Creators Bundle is right for you, consider this:
With the retail price of most individual items in the bundle priced higher than the bundle itself, even if you use only 1 or 2 items, it pays for itself!
What are you waiting for? The extension period will end tonight at 8:00 PST (11:00 EST) and, after that, this sale will be gone FOREVER! If you’re wondering whether or not there will be a second extension, you can stop wondering. I’ll tell you right now, there won’t be. So if you...

Canon EOS R5 pricing in Europe may have leaked [CR2]

The obvious number 1 question I get about the Canon EOS R5 is “how much will it cost?”. We have reported in the past that the EOS R5 will sell below $4000 USD for the body only. Though I haven’t been told the exact price as of yet.
I have received a Canon price list that looks pretty legitimate but can obviously be easily edited. I can’t post the price list for obvious reasons.
According to the price list, the Canon EOS R5 will have an MSRP of €4500. Keep in mind pricing in Euro also includes VAT. which can range from 17%-27% depending on the country you’re in. There are also other considerations when looking at pricing in Euro.
The €4500 Euro pricing would mean that the price in USD will definitely be below $4000 USD. As a comparison, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV...

Mr. Chips

Well, it seems it is still very difficult to book any sessions right now. I've had to sell both my RF 28-70 and 50. I got the Tamron SP 45mm Di VC USD to tide me over and have been getting used to it the past few days. It is a real value at $399 via Adorama right now.

These are a few of the RF lenses coming in 2021 [CR2]

Now that we have seen the likely lens roadmap for 2020, It’s time to move onto 2021, and below are a few lenses that I know are scheduled to be announced next year.
I don’t have all the information about these lenses, but the focal lengths are legitimate. None of these lenses will be L lenses.

Canon RF 18-45mm IS STM
I don’t know if this is for full-frame, or perhaps a kit lens for an APS-C RF camera. Though I don’t believe we’ll ever see “RF-S” lenses.
Canon RF 24mm Macro IS
I have no information on the focus motor or what type of macro capabilities the lens will have.
Canon RF 100-400mm IS USM
This will be a non-L 100-400mm lens.

I haven’t received the same kind of information about upcoming L lenses in 2021, but there is a lot in the works according to various bits of information I have received over the last few months.

It looks like SIGMA is joining in on the announcement fun and will soon be announcing a 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS for mirrorless cameras. I doubt we’ll see an RF mount announcement with it.
I’m still trying to find out when SIGMA will announce their RF mount plans, there has been a lot of conflicting information on the topic.

Delay between shots (BUSY) when shutter speed > 1 second in burst mode?

Hello,

I recently jumped back into the Canon world with the EOS R after leaving Canon for Fuji 5 years ago. One of my favorite things to shoot is lightning in thunder storms. I got to try for the first time last night with the EOS R.

To do this I put the camera in burst mode, get a 1 second or greater shutter speed (depending on lighting/time of day) and lock a remote trigger with the shutter down. On my Fuji cameras this works like a charm and I don't miss any time between shots. But I noticed on the EOS R that when the shutter speed was 1 second or greater "BUSY" would appear on the back LCD for almost a second. This made me miss a bunch of lightning strikes.

I went to sleep thinking what would be causing it and thought I came up with the answer, Long Exposure Noise Reduction must have been turned on. But this morning I checked and it was in fact off. I then did a fairly unscientific test, at a shutter speed of 0.8s I could take ~20 shots in 20 seconds with no "BUSY" appearing on the LCD, when I go to 1s shutter speed I could only get 10 shots in 20s and "BUSY" shows up on the LCD between shots....

Any idea why there is a delay between shutter actuations at longer shutter speeds? Is there a setting I am missing? Does this behavior exist on other Canon cameras?

Thanks,
Ken

Third Party Battery Grip for EOS R

I've not seen much mention of this in a while but has anyone come across an available, or even soon to be available 3rd party battery grip for the EOS R?

The Canon BG-E22 is still around the £250 new mark in the UK (some available cheaper from ebay etc), but there is no sign of a 3rd party version from the usual brands like Meike/Neewer/DSTE etc on Amazon, even after 18+months of the R being around.

There is I think 1, maybe 2 available for the RP, just think it's strange there's none for the R, and with the R5 so close I doubt it'll even happen now.

As it's not something I'd use all the time I really don't want to be paying so much for one, but it would be nice to have the option to add one on for those longer shooting days or if I know I'm shooting vertical a lot. I'm purely after this for the ergonomics, no real interest in the USB charging etc.

Sooooo, f/11 you say? What’s Canon up to with these upcoming supertelephoto lenses?

I’ve known about the RF 600mm f/11 DO IS STM and RF 800 f/11 DO IS STM since about mid-February, I was confused then and I’m confused now.
Who are these lenses for? Is there possibly some software trickery coming to Canon EOS R cameras?
I’m thinking about using these lenses on safari for example. I’m not sure there is enough light at dawn and dusk to shoot the wildlife, and there’s no point in shooting at noon under the high sun.
What about videographers, is there any use for f/11 outside of specific situations?
I’d love to hear your ideas about what these lenses are for.
I know three more lenses that are for sure coming in 2021 and I will write about them soon.

Canon News was reminded of a...
