The Canon EOS R5 will have an SD & CFExpress slot [CR2]

One of the big questions about the upcoming Canon EOS R5, is what two card slots the camera will have. We have been told by a very good source that the Canon EOS R5 will have the following slots.

CFExpress
SD UHS-II

I think this is what most people thought was going to happen, and a lot of people will likely appreciate the SD slot.

Patent: Canon RF 13-21mm f/2.8L

A patent showcasing an RF 13-21mm f/2.8 optical formula has appeared in Japan.
Canon RF 13-21mm f/2.8 embodiment:

Zoom ratio: 1.58
Focal length: 13.40mm  17.30mm  21.20mm
F number: 2.88 2.88 2.88
Half angle of view: 58.23 51.35 45.58
Image height: 21.64mm  21.64mm  21.64mm
Lens length: 150.15mm  136.89mm  130.04mm
Back focus: 20.96mm  25.13mm  29.31mm

I doubt this specific optical formula will become a consumer product, but it is probably part of the development for an ultra-wide-angle RF mount lens that we expect to see sometime in 2020.

A Canon camera has shown up for certification

A camera, likely the EOS R5 has shown up for certification according to Nokishita.
The certification shows a new battery as we reported previously, it’ll be the LP-E6NH with a voltage of 7.2v and 2130mAh. Perhaps the “H” means “high-capacity”.
The certification also says the camera is compatible with the Speedlite 600EX-RT, does that mean the EOS R5 will have a wireless trigger? We haven’t heard that suggestion previously.
The camera is also compatible with the Canon RS-60E3.

The EOS M lineup will be addressed later in 2020 [CR1]

I continue to receive little bits of information in regards to the future of the EOS M lineup, and it sounds like Canon is still working on new cameras and lenses for the system, but obviously at a much slower pace the EOS R system.
I have been pretty adamant that there wouldn’t be an EOS M5 Mark II, however, I have been told that there will be an EOS M5 replacement in Q4 of this year. The source claims that specifications for the camera would be very similar to the EOS M6 Mark II, but with IBIS, a built-in EVF and better build quality.
The same source claims that the EOS M50 Mark II won’t come until very early next year.
As far as lenses, I have now had a couple mentions about an EF-M 52mm f/2 STM coming in 2020. This would be the equivalent of an 85mm f/2 for full-frame.
Another rumoured EF-M lens is an EF-M 100-300mm, but that it would not appear until early 2021.
This is a...

RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM

Since no one else has done it, I thought I'd start the underrated rf24-240 lens gallery.

It's not as good as I'd hoped, but much better than I'd expected (and better than a superzoom that's under $1k US has any right to be.)

EOS R, RF 24-240 f/4-6.3 IS USM @ 240mm, 1/320s, f10, ISO 125

Since this is an internet forum about cameras, the obligatory cat pic. The versatility of the 24-240 means you don't have to switch lenses to get in close and capture the cat in the middle of deciding whether to finish climbing, or to jump down on what he just spotted.

EOS R, RF 24-240 f/4-6.3 IS USM @ 240mm, 1/250s, f9, ISO 400

Lets get in close to some bees!

EOS R, RF 24-240 f/4-6.3 IS USM @ 240mm, 1/320s, f6.3, ISO 400

These last two images demonstrate what is truely great about this lens: They're the same picture, captured from the same place. One is at 40mm, the other at 240. Look right at the centre of the first of these two images, and you can see the same texture to the clouds. And the first is only 40mm, not even the full 24mm at the wide end. 24-240 means you can zoom in from 100% of the scene in to a small section that is only 1% of the size of the original. The quality is pretty good considering the versatility.

Canon EOS R/R5 and RF lenses vs Sony Alpha a7R IV and G Master lenses

Hello. I am a Canon lover.
I like to take street photography and fine-art landscape kind of images.
I had in the past an EOS 1D Mark III and 5D Mark II.
Now I am ready to jump to buy this Summer a new EOS R5 body as I just purcheased a 15-35mm RF and a 70-200mm RF lenses.
I hope I made the proper decision....
I say this because I hear top comments on the Sony Alpha camera and the Sony sensor. It looks according to many review, very clean and providing very sharp images. The latest test for the newest Sony G Master 20mm lenses show an increible sharpness at the edges.
I am just wondering, if buy thre fact that I have just purcheased 2 Canon RF lenses and plan to buy, when available, the new R5 body, make sense versus Sony Alpha a7R IV and G Master lenses?

Any comment is very welcome.
TIA,
Andrea

1Dx3 - to be honest a bit disappointed

I recently received my 1Dx3, having upgraded from a 1Dx2, and have been putting it through the tests. The following are my opinions from use. No photos, as this isn't a full in-depth review.

AF - my first impression was that it's a lot better. It snaps on quickly and does an excellent job tracking subjects. Since I'm a wildlife photographer, I tried the auto mode. It did a fair job, but I'm going to switch to the other modes (mostly 2 and 3) because it doesn't do the best job with birds that are at rest, then suddenly take off. Mode 3 in the past has worked well for that. I also found that my keeper rate wasn't dramatically better than what I achieved with my 1Dx2. Yeah, it feels better, but the results aren't dramatic.

High ISO - from a comparison with images of similar subjects, it appears to be about the same

Dynamic range - I live in the Pacific Northwest, so ISO 100 is mostly a myth for wildlife. Perhaps at that level there's a DR improvement, but I found it to be roughly the same as the 1Dx2 in the situations I use.

AF point selector - This is pretty cool, but IMHO not worth $6500

Silent shutter - It's more silent than the 1Dx2 and not nearly as annoying. Fps is noticeably higher.

Note that AF through LiveView isn't practical for me, since I always shoot handheld. I simply don't have the ability to track a bird in flight handheld with the back LCD. I do use LiveView for landscapes, but this is not intended to be a landscape camera. I don't use a gimbal because I constantly change positions + subjects. I've shot this way for a number of years and am used to it.

Overall this isn't a bad camera. I haven't found anything really wrong with it, but I just don't see the value over the 1Dx2. I'll give it another day or two of use to see if I change my mind, but right now I'm leaning toward returning it and sticking with the 1Dx2. If the other reviews are correct that AF is awesome with LiveView, then I expect their upcoming mirrorless bodies to be what I need.

Just to be clear, no I'm not going to Sony. I still like Canon and am very excited about the R5 and eventually the R1 + the lens variety is top notch. For my uses, though, the 1Dx3 just doesn't provide much to justify the cost.

Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark III coming relatively soon [CR2]

Yes, PowerShot cameras still exist, though it’s an area Canon does appear to be as serious about anymore for obvious reasons. We’re getting a lot of small updates in the rare new G models.
The Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark III will be no different as far as how big of an update it will be over its predecessor.
Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark III Specifications:

20.1mp
DIGIC 8
4x zoom
4K @ 30p
FHD @ 120p

Does it feel familiar? It should, this is basically the PowerShot G7 X Mark III with a slower lens and a slightly smaller form factor.

Traveling with the RP - Disney World (samples)

After reading and watching as much as I can, we finally left for Disney World. I can say the RP is a joy to travel with. The 24 - 240 RF has been the primary lens glued to the camera. Outside in sunlight, it’s versatility has been valued.

As a beginner, I’ve quickly adapted to AV mode as my go to. I was shooting pictures of the Rivers of Light show, however, and learned to appreciate FV on the fly.

The Auto ISO likes to send that to the roof quickly in low light. Really liking the control ring mapped to ISO to prevent this. I know you can cap the range in auto, but sometimes it’s the only option to at least capture something quickly in fast changing conditions.

Birds in flight at close range during a show was difficult for me due in part to the EVF, but likely most of the challenge was lack of experience and difficult subject matter.

Overall very happy with sharpness, quick ability to adapt to situations, the auto focus.

Only thing I need to do is map a button to change between auto focus modes. Haven’t figured out how to do that. I want to quickly change between Tracking AF and Spot AF. Can this be done?

Oh, and one photo pass photographer said this was the camera he wants. Was kind enough to take pictures of our whole family with it. Did a great job.

Edited to add. Second battery is a must.

Canon Mirrorles + Speedlites in continues shooting mode

One of the issues I have with the EOS R is that the continues shooting takes a massive hit (down to 3 fps) when you are in a situation that requires run n' gun shooting, like a wedding or club scene with dancing people. Also the initial focus in low light is super slow and not as snappy as a DSLR because the IR beam is not utilized on mirrorless. I understand that this is a technical limitation.

In light of the 1Dx3 release, I noticed something in the manual regarding live view shooting and flash. Because this is essentially mirrorless mode it is stated that the continues shooting will be lower but the approximate fps is not mentioned (page 412). Can maybe some of the early 1dx3 users test this out?

I also noted that in live view mode AF assist beam will indeed not fire but when needed an AF assist beam from the LED light of speedlites will be used (page 193). I am confused, I don't think my 600ex flashes have a LED light. Is this maybe equipped on the new "flagship" speedlite that is rumored?

This should give an indication I believe what the EOS R5 is capable of.

Maybe worth a discussion.

New to Video - recommended cine lenses?

I have been into my Photography for 20 years or so. This week hopefully my new 1DX MKIII will turn up. I am getting more requests for Video than still Photography. I am going to have to learn the art of shooting Video asap.

I have a good collection of Canon L-Series Lenses but no Cine lenses. Can someone help recommend a good cine lens to start off with. My video work will be all close up, unboxing video's, new tech video all for my YouTube site.

Can someone explain the differences between Cine Lenses and normal still photography lenses please?

RF TC = RF-RF or RF-EF?

Can we confirm that the announced RF TCs are RF to RF? RF-RF could only be used on the 100-500mm (if new DO super tele is not released soon) and @1000mm f/14 (2x) would have few use cases. They can't fit the RF70-200 due to how close the rear element is to the mount.

If they are RF to EF TCs then it would make some sense ie to avoid RF-EF adapter + EF 1.4/2x TC and use the existing big whites. This would fit the current RF roadmap rumour but wouldn't help with future RF big whites.

Canon 1dx3-Digital Lens optimizer etc etc

Hello All.

Can someone simply explain which is the best mode to turn on for "in Camera Correction" for lenses? From the get go we have "Peripheral Illu Correction, Distortion Correction, Chromatic Aberr Corr and Diffraction Correction. I know if you turn on" Digital Lens Optimizer", it closes out a couple of other ones. Does this affect RAW files or only JPEGS? any advice would be appreciated. I shoot both JPG and RAWS.

Wildlife/Sports/Airshow Lens

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but I could use some advice/opinions/help on my next lens dilemma. I love shooting air shows and wildlife (not so much birds, but typically longer shots of bears/wolves/etc.), and will have many more sporting opportunities coming up. I currently use a 70-200IS V2 with a 2x extender (or no extender at all when the light is fading quickly). Not a pro at all, just love shooting a variety of things. I have a few options floating around for some more reach. All of these are used.

1. 400mm f/2.8 IS V2 - have an offer on a very good quality lens, $5200
2. 600mm F/4 IS original - good quality, $4500
3. 300mm f/2.8 IS V2 - $3200, good quality. Would get a 1.4x also
4. 400mm f/2.8 IS V1 - $3000, good quality optically, little ugly from use
5. 500mm f/4 IS V1 - $3500, good shape
6. 300mm f/2.8 IS V1 - $2500, good shape
7. 100-400 V2 - $1200, very good shape. Would need to get a 1.4x extender and a new body to focus at F/8.

Do any of these just jump off the page? I’m sure someone has been through the same questions... I believe the 400 V2 might be the best deal from a $ perspective, but I feel like I’m short for most wildlife at 400mm as it is. Will I have enough reach with a 1.4x, and am I going to hate the weight? I am actually renting a V2 next week to see how tough it is going to be. If it matters, I am shooting a 6D and 60D with plans to upgrade to an 80/90/7dii and a 6dii/5div within the next year. Almost all of what I do now is handheld, because I can. I do not have a gimbal, but I was planning to try the rented 400 on my Manfrotto fluid video head to see how that works.

Thanks for your input!
