Review: Canon EOS-1D X Mark III real world sports review

Longtime professional sports photographer Peter Read Miller had a chance to photograph some NFL playoff action recently with the brand new Canon EOS-1 D X Mark III.
Peter breaks down everything about the camera and shows us a ton of images from a couple of NFL playoff games. I am quite impressed with how the autofocus performs.

Patent: Canon RF 17-70mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

It looks like Canon is serious about the 17-70mm focal range for a new lens design as discovered by Canon News. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen mention of an RF 17-70mm lens, which leads us to believe we are likely to see this introduced at some point.
This would be a nice kit lens for a new entry-level EOS R camera body.
This patent also shows two similar EF designs.

Industry News: Fujifilm announces the X-T200, an affordable little powerhouse

Valhalla, New York – January 23, 2020 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation is pleased to announce FUJIFILM Corporation’s launch of its “FUJIFILM X-T200” (hereinafter “X-T200”) mirrorless digital camera.
The X-T200 provides content creators of all levels with a new, light-weight and compact mirrorless camera body that features a newly designed EVF, quick face detection AF, and a new sensor and processor combination that can create 24.2MP stills at 8 FPS and record 4K UHD video at 30fps.

An ideal camera for creative individuals who want to make high-quality imagery anywhere, the X-T200’s HDR functions for still and video make this easier in high- contrast environments. It can also record Full-HD 120p video, making it a great tool to use for scenes needing super slow motion. Additionally, the new Digital Gimbal Function can now be used to smoothly record video in-camera by mitigating camera shake through new gyro sensors in the camera...

EOS R HDMI output possible at FHD and 23.98p?

I just noticed that when hooking my EOS R up to an external monitor/recorder, even with the camera set to record at FHD and 23.98p, it outputs to the monitor at 59.94p. Is there any way I can get it to output over HDMI at 23.98p? It seems the only way to do this is to set the camera to 24p mode, where then obviously it's outputting at FHD and 24p. Which, from reading online is not a big deal compared to 23.98, but it seems weird that the camera won't output at the same framerate it will record to internally.

The new AF point selector doohickey on the 1DX Mark III

I got a chance to try a 1DX Mark III yesterday. I was most curious about the new AF point selector that's integrated into the AF ON button. I'm pleased by how it functions. It was smooth and felt intuitive. There is a speed adjustment that you can adjust to change how it works. I think there are 5 different levels you can set it to, from very slow, to fast. Interestingly, when I set it to slow and wiped my thumb the whole way across it, it seemed to move the selected AF point about the same total distance across the frame as when I had it set to fast. Having it set to fast just made it feel... Well... Faster. I think the speed adjustment is really just making it more responsive or something. I'm not sure it's a direct "speed" adjustment.

Overall I like it much better than the touch and drag selection on the EOS R, which has always felt like it takes way too much movement of your thumb across the screen to get the point to move where you want it to. (I know there are different settings for the touch and drag, but I can't find a combination of settings that makes the point move quickly enough but also precisely when I want it.)

I'm very much hoping we see this new selector on future RF cameras. It also worked in live view on the 1DX, so this is probably about the experience I would expect if they do put this selector on an RF camera.

Samantha

I'm not real sure about all the rules of photography. Generally, I believe photos are composed and cropped for a particular frame or mat size. This photo is almost square, but it works for me. Sometimes things just look better outside of the norm.

Canon will release four new full-frame cameras in 2020 [CR2]

We have been working hard trying to piece together a Canon roadmap for 2020 in regards to camera bodies, and we think we have most of it figured out. The following information comes from a few different sources and is mixed with a little bit of common-sense.
This roadmap is only for full-frame ILC cameras, we have no information on new PowerShot or EOS M camera bodies.
We have been told that Canon will release four new full-frame cameras in 2020, and we’re pretty certain about three of them.
Canon EOS-1D X Mark III
This has already been announced and will begin shipping in the middle of February. You should preorder two of them.
Canon EOS Rs (unofficial name)
This has long been rumored as the next EOS R camera body, and we think there will be a good chance that it is in February ahead of CP+. It’s also possible this gets announced in May.

Canon EOS Rm (unofficial name)
Apparently we’re going to see a body even more...

EOS R for Birds in Flight

Anyone using the the EOS R for BIF? The first reports on the R suggested it wasn't up to using for BIF. However, I have been seeing some good shots on the net and am wondering if the firmware updates have made significant improvements that the R is now generally useful. Please post any first hand experience and any shots, with some indications about the number of keepers.

Pre-mature Ad for "New Canon EOS R Full-Frame"

Well, well. This was an interesting find as this ad popped up on the CNN.com page. Clearly the product photo isn't accurate, and the {PH_0} placeholder for the timeframe was not populated with a valid value.

Accidental or not, does this indicate that Canon resellers are now starting to queue up their digital campaign to get the pre-orders going? Seems this could be validating the recent rumors about release timelines.

BTW, the "Visit Site" button did go to the B&H site, but it's showing only the old EOS R product page here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prom...MI8vyEg_SS5wIVwlcBCh3WiwNPEAEYASAAEgIsEPD_BwE

Major Canon announcements in February and May of this year [CR2]

We reported earlier that there were two new EOS bodies coming in the first half of 2020. We have no been told to expect those announcements to occur in February and May of 2020.
We were also told to expect the EOS RS (High-megapixel) body to come first, with an “unknown type of body” in May.
Another source has said it won’t be the EOS R Mark II in the first half, but a lower megapixel body to “rival the A7 S line”. We have been unable to confirm this with more than one person at this time.
More to come a bit later today.

Buying advice 5d mark iv vs 1Dx (vanilla) vs 100-400 mark ii

Currently I am running a 5d mark ii which suffered more than a few drops and has always been poor on AF. Before this I had a 7d which had a much higher hit rate and it actually had AF. I mostly shoot with a very old 300mm f/2.8 L non-IS but sometimes use a 70-200 non-IS.

So with my bonus coming up, I can buy one of three items to tide me over for the year. So my choices are getting a new 100-400 mark ii to replace the 70-200 and 300. Or getting a new body that has some AF. I tired the 1Dx and really loved how it locked on focus and had a great burst rate when I was photographing a fox. But have seen used 5d mark iv for the same price.

Any opinions would be welcome.

P.S. Next year I will be buying a 200-400 and a 1Dx mark iii.

Edit: I think I am more looking for a temp camera replacement for 12-18 months.

Fundraiser: Australian Fire Relief Charity Shirt

Jared Polin AKA FroKnowsPhoto is doing a good thing and has created an “I SHOOT RAW” t-shirt to raise funds for the relief efforts in Australia.
From Jared:
By now everyone knows what’s going on in Australia. There’s been massive devastation and up to a billion animals have perished. Matt Granger reached out to me about creating a shirt to raise funds for charity and this is the design I came up with.
All profits from sales of the shirts will go directly to the “Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors”, that’s Steve Irwins Zoo. Feel free to order as many shirts as you would like as all the profits go to a great cause.
Check out the fundraiser
Please Note: Unfortunately due to a trademark issue with G Star RAW, ‘I SHOOT RAW’ shirts cannot be shipped to the EU and various other countries in that region.

Circular watermark in images

I just bought a Laowa 100mm macro lens, and I've used it with the EF-RF adaptor. Two problems:
1. It forces a 1.6 cropping ratio (no others available) &
2. Through the EVF (and the back screen) I get a circular watermark on screen as below:

1579307611752.jpeg

This watermark stays in the saved image. But when I download the image into Lightroom, while the watermark initially appears on screen, when it prepares 'standard previews', the watermark disappears - and doesn't seem to be in the actual image! My suspicion is that it is showing the 1.6 crop on screen. But it doesn't do that when I attach an EF-S lens.

Any ideas about either of the above issues? I've tried the lens on my 6D and it doesn't seem to be cropping, and the watermark isn't there. The EOS R is certainly recognising the lens, because it can control aperture, and the 'lens aperture correction' recognises the specific lens. I've tried turning off the corrections, and that doesn't make any difference.

RP for travel decision

I've been a long time lurker and finally joined. I'm planning a trip to Scotland in the fall and have been thinking about getting the RP for it's light weight and compactness. I have a 5dmk4 and want something lighter to travel without sacrificing too much. I shoot mainly photos so video is a non issues for me. I also want to keep the cost down so that's why I'm leaning toward the RP rather than R. Question is should I pull the trigger? Has anyone had experience traveling with the RP?

Industry News: Leica announces the M10 Monochrom

The highly anticipated camera enters a new dimension of innovation in the world of monochrome photography
January 17, 2020 – Leica Camera continues to be a trailblazer in the world of black-and-white photography with the announcement of the new Leica M10 Monochrom. Photographers are now able to explore their subjects in vivid tones of monochrome due to the omission of a color filter, resulting in an unparalleled black-and-white photography experience. The newly developed 40-megapixel true black-and-white sensor, new Wi-Fi capabilities, and expanded ISO range make room for added creativity with light and contrast, bringing photographers back to the basics with the most up-to-date technology.

Black-and-white photography lends itself to establishing emotional connections between the photographer and the subject matter being conveyed. With the absence of color, a photograph conveys intense, vulnerable and timeless messages that speak to...

Annoying Advertising!

Hi Folks.
Just wondering if everyone is suffering from an annoying pop up banner advert, full width, static and across the full width of the page?
I don’t have ad blocker enabled for CR as I enjoy the site and understand the advert supported theory and I could scroll past the included in page box adverts, this one is static, covers part of the page and is real annoying with moving, scrolling, flickering content.
Viewing on iPad.
I see me adding CR to my advert blocker blacklist (un white listing it) in the near future!
Included 3 screenshots taken in sequence a as fast as I was allowed to take the next capture.

Cheers, Graham.5789FB79-F758-4BD0-8EBF-5B2596B61423.png6928D15A-294B-4161-87E0-F627C3F111AC.pngCF87D48F-FBD0-4A89-BF49-EB75FCC46B5A.png
