"Canon to launch upgraded CANON iMAGE GATEWAY service"

After the Irista shutdown, Canon is going to redesign the iMAGE Gateway service:

"We are pleased to inform you that in March 2020, Canon will substantially revamp its existing CANON iMAGE GATEWAY online photography service, strengthen its connectivity and compatibility with products and other services, and provide services to help customers manage and use their images.

The revamped service will have a new name and improved functions – we will share further details with you in February 2020. To make way for this service, we will close the current CANON iMAGE GATEWAY service in mid March 2020 and later that month all of your image files and albums will be available for access with the upgraded service, so that you can experience the new benefits it will provide."

I wonder if they will integrate some of the functionalities developed for Irista. Still, the terms of use are different.

Note that users taking advantage of the wi-fi upload service it will be disabled while the upgrade takes place, while the models in the September notice will be no longer supported.

Where the hell are the new Blackmagic Design video monitors?

I have been really eyeing up the new Blackmagic 12G 5" and 7" video monitors for the last few months. The 7" one looks like it would really work for what I want to do with it. Unfortunately, it seems like their release date seems pretty elusive. It looks like they were announced back in September with an October release date. When I got interested in them, B&H was saying they would come out in December. Now it seems like it's anyone's guess. I'm selling a video camera, hopefully to replace it with one of these, and I would hate to find someone to buy the camera before I can obtain one of these to replace it.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III Summary

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III will be announced on Monday, and we are just posting a summary of the known features and specifications for the new camera. There are still some questions to be answered, specifically what processors the camera is going to use. We suspect the camera will have at least dual DIGIC 9 processors. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is going to need a lot of processing power to match its RAW video and buffer specifications.
Will it have DPAF?
Yes, it will, with a caveat. You will get DPAF in 1080p and 4K at 23p/24p/30p. You will not get DPAF in 4K 50p/60p or RAW video shooting.
The WFT-E9 wireless transmitter is all-new for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III and will be announced alongside the new flagship Canon DSLR. Canon is boasting industry-leading file transfer speeds and reliability.
What is HEIF?
High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF), also known as High Efficiency Image Coding (HEIC), is a file format for individual images and image sequences. It was...

EOS R Firmware Update Wish List

I'm sure we all have a (realistic) 'wish list' of features that could be added to the EOS R via firmware.... what are your wishes?

1) 4K DCI video (to reduce that crop factor a tiny bit) - to be on par with what the 5D Mark IV has.

2) Both photo and video overexposure warnings (blinking zebra) - similar to what CHDK does for point and shoots, and magic lantern does for DSLRs.

3) Allow shooting with the full frame sensor when attaching EF-S lenses (via a custom function).
Currently if you want to try and explore how much image coverage apsc glass has, you must use at least one non-Canon element (either Camera or lens).
Canon apsc lenses work fine adapted to other non-Canon cameras, but you cant get full frame results because the EOS R forces a crop.
Similarly, if you take a non-Canon lens and put it on the EOS R, you can shoot with the full frame area of the sensor.
To summarize: You are being penalized for buying all Canon, as the only combination that forces a crop is the Canon camera + Canon lens. (default can remain as is, but let advanced users enable it in a custom function).
Just one example is the below lens which I have (Canon EF-S 10-18mm), and another I'd like to have when ultimate flexibility is concerned (Tamron 18-400mm)

4) Allow setting a photo or video crop in 0.1 increments (from 1.0 to roughly 3.0). - A 1.3x video crop would be ideal for that Tamron lens.

5) I will remember a few more after I hit that 'post thread' button.

Canon 70-200 F4L IS noisy ?

Hi all and happy new year !

Recently bought myself a 70-200 F4 IS as i love the weight and ability of the 70-200 f4L i used to have and missed it , now i have owned lots of IS lenses but never one of these and am finding that the IS is quite noisy and very obvious compared to my other lenses 16-35 , 24-105 , 35 etc , is this normal for this lens has anyone else noticed - the lens itself is immaculate and looks hardly used so cannot imagine its wear and tear. Was bought second hand from well known used dealer. The photos from the lens are fabulous and no issues with that.

thank you Andrew

Patent: Canon RF 24-300mm f/4-5.6

Canon continues to develop optical formulas for an RF mount superzoom, something that we’ll likely see sooner than later. This patent shows an optical formula for an RF 24-300mm f/4-5.6. It’s hard to say if this is an L lens, as they tend to be larger than their non-L counterparts.
Canon RF 24-300mm f/4-5.6 embodiement:

Patent: IBIS appears in EOS M and PowerShot cameras

Canon News has uncovered a patent that shows IBIS being developed for the EOS M system, as well as for PowerShots. This patent showcases IBIS and lens stabilization working in harmony on Canon’s smaller cameras.
Canon News explains:
What this patent actually is, is that with smaller cameras, the actual stabilization will cause vibration because the sensor and optical elements are moving, and that will then result in more shake, which then gets compensated, and basically you have a runaway system with the smaller and lighter cameras because of the sensor and optical element mass.  So what Canon is doing is finding a way to reduce the vibration caused by the IS units.
The images in the patent seem to show what looks to be an EOS M style body, this may be just for illustration purposes as we have been told by folks at Canon themselves that a follow-up to the EOS M5 was not coming...

RF Plans for Big Lenses? Keep 400mm f2.8 IS III or send it back?

I just switched to Canon from Nikon because I’m sold on mirrorless and Nikon didn’t offer the lenses I want, like the RF 70-200, and the ultra-light 400 IS III. This issue is about the 400, and Canon's possible future plans. Help me decide whether to keep it or to send it back.

If I were an earning pro the easy answer is to buy the best and use it. I’m an undeserving amateur so this is an optional luxury purchase, a rare and special personal hobby indulgence justified in part because I'm in the industry as an optics specialist, and that I intend to give decades of service with nature photos, kids playing sports, and scenic creative photography. For me, it’s the ideal pair to the RF 70-200 because it provides a nice step in focal length, and leaves hunger on the long end for nothing more that TCs and my Questar telescope collection can’t handle.

The anxiety is that in a short time (say two years) they will release a dedicated RF version of this lens that I’ll really want and agonize over. This will preumably be discounted to $9999 by then, the new RF will be $12k, and Ebay or Adorama used buy-back might net me $7000. That’s a $5000 "rental" for a couple years, which doesn’t pencil out for my hobby, and the most expensive hobby purchase ever by a large factor.

If I knew that would happen, I’d not buy (I’d actually send back what I already have and love, during the evaluation period endiong in late February). Then, I might watch for a used $5000 IS II on Ebay that I could resell in two years for say $1200 loss (ugly given the 8% sales tax, plus 13% sale commission even if the lens doesn’t lose value – one reason I decided to buy new – Ebay just sent a bill for $1100 for selling my Nikon gear, and that doesn’t count PayPal).

Canon could solve this problem and overcome my hesitation a couple ways:
  • Offer an RF model soon. Unlikely, though I predict they will do this for the 300 IS III as it gets the lightening treatment of the 400. I predict that future big white models will have removable de-converters to enable them to mount to EF bodies, or maybe they’ll just build them so they can put either mount at the rear for two stock numbers and factory convertibility.
  • Offer a future bolt-on conversion of my lens for maybe $500-1000. I’m fine with that.
  • Most cleverly, immediately (soon) offer an EF-RF adapter (“converter”) with these features:
    • Color and contour match to lens – get the white right and all diameters.
    • No easy external detach – avoid hitting the wrong button as I do time and again. I’d rather have a converter for each lens of the few EF lenses I regularly use, and have to demount the combo from the body if I ever wanted to remove the converter. Or at least require a tool or stylus to demount externally.
    • Don’t add much weight compared to dedicated RF lens. I paid a $4 per eliminated gram premium for this lens.
One factor is that the days are presumably numbered for enjoying the sales-tax free purchase I already made on Adorama. Neither the buyer nor the seller is a retailer in my state, but most retailers have surrendered belly up to state tax authorities, insrtead of defending their customers. I might want to set up a holding company in Oregon to buy equipment and rent it out (to myself). When sales tax on a lens is $1000(!) I can handle shipping to my Oregon “business” and reshipping the rental to myself. So, the untaxed lens in my hand covers about $1000 in any loss by avoiding sales tax.

So, here’s the question I’m asking for your predictions on: How likely do you think it is that Canon announces in the next three years an RF 400mm that will make me regret buying the EF, without an appealing conversion option that eases the regret? Am I an oddity whose needs Canon is unlikely to address, buying a pro lens for mirrorless?

Thanks for your thoughts, and begging forgiveness of those who would be more capable than I at using this wonderful lens that I look forward to growing into.

RF24-105 lens barrel play

My RF24-105 lens barrel seems to have a little 'play' in it ... If you shake the camera/lens you can hear a little knocking sound & can feel the lens barrel moving. It's only slight - you can't really see any movement - maybe 0.5mm and it doesn't affect the IQ which is excellent.

I also have the RF15-35 which is rock solid & has no play whatsoever - but then the barrel only extends a small amount & it was more than twice as expensive.

Anyone else have the same with their RF24-105? I know I could get it checked by Canon but I'm sure they'd say it was 'within tolerances' or it would come back worse!

New Canon Cinema EOS information rolling in [CR2]

The long-awaited Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II was finally announced in 2019, along with a new modular form factor.
It looks like Canon will continue with the new form factor with at least 2 new Cinema EOS cameras in 2020.
We have been told that Canon will introduce a body that will slot between the C300 and C500, could one guess a C400? The new cameras will use the same sort of design concepts as the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II and will be compatible with most, if not all of the accessories introduced with the latest Cinema EOS camera.

As far as 8K goes, that will be addressed further in 2020. There will definitely be a Cinema EOS announcement at NAB in April of 2020.
More to come…

5.9K RAW video recording still a possibility for the EOS-1D X Mark III

We were told a few months back the EOS-1D X Mark III was being tested with 6K video capabilities. However, Canon only mentioned 4K recording during their development announcement.
We have been told that 5.9K RAW external recording is still on the table. A final decision on the feature had not been made at the time of the source testing the camera.
On a side note, the EOS-1D X Mark III will record full sensor 4K, so that means no crop. 4K will also have DPAF.

Could this possibly be to “future proof” what will likely be the last of the EOS-1 series DSLRs?
We are NOT claiming this is definitely coming to the EOS-1D X Mark III. We just know there are still some big surprises in store for this camera and are just reporting what we have been told.

Consumer RF mount zoom lenses coming in the first half of 2020 [CR2]

We have been told that Canon will address a big need in the still-evolving lineup of RF mount lenses in the first half of 2020.
While there are a few more RF mount lenses coming in 2020, there will also be a “bunch” of non-L zoom lenses coming in the first half of 2020.
The source claims we will see some unique designs for consumer-grade lenses, including fixed aperture designs alongside variable aperture zooms.
There will also be at least one non-L prime announced, which will most likely be a pancake. A non-L 50mm lens is also in the works and could come later in 2020.
I apologize that the information is vague at the moment, but we hope to confirm this information in the near future.

Eos Rp or R for $400 more

Hello All,

I am getting the eos RP with 24-105L for $1799 but am enticed to consider the R for $400 more @ $2,199. Even though the R is a better deal I was hoping someone on this forum could shed some light if they have one and are wishing they had the other or if they do not think the R is worth the extra $$ just because it is on sale.

I will be recording indoor band concerts, general family photography, some landscapes. Nothing professional. I Like the RP size but the R does not seem much bigger. Any help is appreciated.

Canon vs Sony mirrorless body

Hi folks,

I am considering buying a mirrorless body to use on a zhiyun or similar gimbal for portable videoing of people, close objects, street scene, places etc. I'd prefer to stick with Canon to use on my extensive lens collection but i hear Sony A7 Mk3 is supposed to be the most popular body for this purpose. I'd need a lens adapter of course.

i do have a DX2 but can't see this being practical for holding on a 3 axis gimbal. Any advice or recommendations.

The EF-RF adapter they got right

I had been grumbling about the look of the basic adapter. Why doesn't it match the body's metallic ring like the RF lenses do? I grant it's a challenge to make an adapter look right for generations of different lenses but I found this inexcusable. Then, Santa put a control ring adapter in my stocking, and I realized that Canon did it right on all but the basic model.

Here's how it looks with a WIDE price range of lenses (factor of 100, literally). I'm still wishing for a white one they can produce to seve the big white market and make us R users feel like they are m,aking pro lenses for us.

New gear for the holidays

Hi
Starting a thread to see if the holidays have been good to you -- either getting or buying something (gear/software/books) new (or used). I bought a new EF 85 mm f1.8 two weeks ago and yesterday a new Manfrotto 290 Xtra Carbon tripod with the 496 ball head. Tomorrow (the day after Chrismas) is Boxing Day in Canada (and the UK), a day of sales equal to Black Friday, so my shopping may not be over.

RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM

This isn't an L lens but it does a good job and on this camera makes for a small package. These were shot with a Canon RP, low light, high ISO and puppies that wouldn't stay still.
