SIGMA to address their RF mount plans in early 2020 [CR2]

We have been told that SIGMA is actively working on an RF mount lens roadmap and will announce their plans sometime in early 2020, I would suspect an announcement ahead of CP+ in February would be the ideal time to do so.
Apparently distributors have received some early information about SIGMA’s plans, but our source on this one didn’t want to divulge any more information.
It would be great for the EOS R system if SIGMA gets on board early with compelling lenses.

Little Booger

My biggest accomplishment in 2019... getting this little guy to put on his suit and actually pose long enough for me to dial in exposure. Not perfect, but good enough. I know there's a way to make the grass green. I need to work on that.

Question on Rokinon MF 14mm RF lens

I purchased a used lens and the dial just in front of the aperture control (where it has the triangle to mark what aperture number is set) spins freely. The aperture control works and clicks in place fine, but obviously since the indicator dial spins freely, it's difficult to know exactly what aperture number you're on. Is this normal, or is there a way to fix it in place? I can return it to the seller still, but if it's an easy fix, I'll do it myself

Two new EOS M cameras rumoured to be coming in 2020 [CR1]

2020 is shaping up as a big year for new product announcements from Canon, especially on the prosumer and professional fronts. The EOS M lineup will likely see at least one new model as well, as the EOS M50 will likely need a successor.
This rumor is being floated by a site that doesn’t source any sites they take information from, so I’ll return that favour. :)

Eos r photo / video customization

Hi to everyone!!

There was a huge discount in canon products in october and i couldn't resist . I added an eos r besides my 5d mark iv and 1d mark ii.
The main reason was to use it for video instead of the 5d mark iv and slowly enter the mirrorless world.
For video is a clear step up from the 5d mark iv .
The flip up screen , the evf , the digital is , the 4k ipb and the button customization are really usefull.
Especially the last one is such a help during shooting.
For photography the transition isn't as smooth because you have to reprogram your brain but i can see the advantages of mirrorless already.
The main frustration for me is mainly that i cannot customize the entire camera for video & photo separately.
So for example for video i want manually to go from evf to flip up screen but in photography i want it to be automatic.
Also although you can set the buttons customized separately for video & photo you can't do that for the dials & the touch bar.
Is that correct and i must find a workaround or am i missing something?
Finally do you know where we can apply suggestions for next firmware updates??

Thank you in advance ,Happy shooting to everyone

RF Native Lens

Purchased an RP a few weeks ago. Love the form factor and ability to use some of my prime EOS lenses by adapter. Wish canon would produce a line of light weight and affordable RF lens in f 1.8. Seems like all their producing is ridiculously expensive, large and heavy F1.2 lenses. The only affordable prime RF lens is their 35mm f 1.8. Which is well regarded. Would love to seen companion f1.8 in 50 and 85mm.

Which possible f/1.2 Primes would be practical for you?

With Canon seeming to be developing a line of f/1.2 primes I have to wonder which would be practical for my use. I can see a 35, 50, 85, and even a 100 f/1.2L prime being practical for what I do (portraits). I don't know that a 28 or 24 would be practical for portraits, but I could be very wrong. Even 35mm pushes the boundaries for me.

So what would be appealing for you and what you do? Also, how many of you shoot portraits at 28 or 24mm? Group shots come to mind.

Premiere Pro And Final Cut Pro X finally Support the Canon XF705

Saw this in the Canon Press Releases. I've been following this camera since it was announced. It would be perfect for the type of ENG work that I do. I've read reviews by early adopters who were frustrated by the lack of support for the new file format. It looks like it took Adobe almost 1 year to add support for the XF705 to Premiere Pro.

Patent: Some crazy fast RF mount prime lenses, including an RF 18mm f/1.0L

Back in August, I mentioned that Canon was working on a whole line of f/1.2L prime lenses for the RF mount. So far we have the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM and the RF 85 f/1.2L USM, but there are more clues that more f/1.2L lenses are in the pipeline.
Canon News has uncovered the following optical designs for the RF mount.
Canon RF 18mm f/1.2L USM

Focal length 18.51mm
F-number 1.24
half angle of view (degree) 49.45°
Image height 21.64mm
Total lens length 129.00mm
BF 16.40mm

Canon RF 24mm f/1.2L USM

focal length 24.59mm
F-number 1.24
half angle (in degrees) 41.35°
Image height 21.64mm
Total lens length 129.01mm
BF 13.57mm

Canon RF 16mm f/1.4L USM

Focal length 16.42mm
F-number 1.43
Half angle of view (degree) 52.80°
Image height 21.64mm
Lens total length 133.46mm
BF 13.55mm...

buying choice: 5DS vs. RP

OK, without going into details (ugly divorce issues), I've lost access to my 5DMkIV and my IR-converted 6D until late summer of 2020.

I primarily shoot landscapes (esp. HDR), travel, portraits (mostly of my kids), and occasionally mess around with macro shots of flowers and butterflies. Since I got the 100-400L, I've found bird photography to be something I want to try a bit more, but I'm not prioritizing that.

So, without access to my camera gear, I need to get a stopgap solution for the next 10 months, something that eventually I might convert to IR photography when I move on and sell off the 6D (or maybe covert for astrophotography, if I save up and buy a Sigma 14mm f/1.8).

Ignore price (mostly), but I'm comparing the 5DS vs. the RP. My simple pros and cons are this:

  • 5DS pros: big resolution, double that of the RP; form factor I'm used to; feature set and many functions similar to what I've grown used to with the 5DMkIV; native fit for my entire lens kit--which I've invested 10+K in and pretty much completed
  • 5DS cons: I know I said "ignore price," but the grey-market deal I can get is still 30% higher than what I can get an RP for; mirror box will cut off bokeh balls with my 85mm f/1.4 L; mirrorslapper could be dinosaur technology in 5 years; larger DLR aperture than the RP (might be detrimental when I shoot landscapes at f/22 to get star-points on a sun)

  • RP pros: newer technology and mount, with some very appealing lenses. If mirrorless is the future and the EVF is as good or better than OVF, I can see myself transitioning to mirrorless bodies when I replace my 5DMkIV; better autofocus performance, especially in low light (one reason why I've shied away from astrophotography--I've had problems with focusing in the dark); focus bracketing (which might be nice to have when I shoot macro)
  • RP cons: need the adapter to use all my current lenses; I'm not sold on the EVF; I like the idea of being able to crop shots and retain IQ with the 5DS; I'm not about to spend $2K+ per lens on the RF mount after spending $10K+ over the past 5 years filling out my EF mount kit.

I think I've pretty much covered it. Basically, I'm shy about moving to mirrorless, even as a short-term replacement and long-term backup body, so that's why I'm thinking about spending $300 more on a grey-market 5DS that is 5 year old technology.

Your thoughts?

Mirrorless alternative to 5D mark IV

I currently shoot with a 5D mark iv and plan to switch to mirrorless when the Canon releases the new rumored bodies. Perhaps it's too soon to ask because specs haven't been released yet, but I'm wondering which of the two rumored (the EOS RS or EOS RL) would make more sense coming from the 5D IV. I shoot mostly portrait and landscape...but do occasional sports as well and like the versatility of the 5D iv. I've heard the "L" in RL is short for landscape although not sure what would make the body would be targeted to landscape (perhaps fewer frames per second?). I also read the EOS-RS may be a successor to the 5DS(R)...but what about someone like me coming from 5d iv. I realize there will likely be a 5D mark v but I probably won't go that route. It will also be interesting to see what video capabilities will be offered on the new mirrorless bodies.

Thanks

EF lens adapter on mirrorless body

Like many i have a bunch of EF lenses, and I'm going to make the switch to a mirrorless body. What effect (if any) will the adapter have on focal length for my existing lenses. For example, the EF 11-24 L..will i still get 11mm or is this essentially like putting on an extension tube which is going to change the focal length. I may sell my 24-70 and buy and RF, but many of the lenses i have aren't available RF mount yet (not to mention the expense in doing this).

Thanks.

Interview: DPReview speaks to the “father of the EOS-1”

DPReview had the chance to speak with two senior Canon executives, Mr. Toshio Matsumoto, Senior Principle Engineer, and Mr. Kazuyuki Suzuki, Chief of Operations, the former being known as the “father of the EOS-1” about the upcoming Canon EOS-1D X Mark III.
Here are a couple of questions related to the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III:

How did you decide which features to update compared to the EOS-1D X Mark II?
There were a variety of factors. We get a lot of requests from our professional users, and we’re always listening to what they need. Their demands are sometimes very detailed! But we have to listen to their requests. In addition, we have to look at our technology – what kind of technology can meet those demands.
We then integrate [those pieces of information] and decide internally what we should include in the next model. In this new camera we’ve improved performance [in several areas], such as autofocus, networking and so on, which we’ll explain later in detail.
What...

What’s next from Canon?

If you follow a rumours site, it’s likely you always want to know what’s coming next. The following is what we have been told about over the last few weeks.
First up. obviously the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is coming soon, we hear that shipping will begin in late February or early March after an official announcement in late January 2020.
There will be a new EOS R series camera announced in early February, it will be the high megapixel replacement for the EOS 5DS/5DS R, it will be equipped with Canon’s next-generation sensors, DIGIC processors and a new form factor that will include the smart controller we first saw on the EOS-1D X Mark III. This will not be the “pro” body that people are clamouring for, but it will be upmarket from the EOS R.

Canon will announce another 4-6 RF lenses in the first half of 2020, there is going to be a total of 8 new lenses coming next year we...

Buying a 90D (body only.) Go for it or wait for Black Friday?

Buy now or wait?

  • Buy!

    Votes: 2 33.3%
  • Wait!

    Votes: 4 66.7%

I'm planning to buy a 90D for a trip in early December. From what I can tell, Black Friday sales are usually limited to Tn/Tni models rather than xxD models, and they usually include bundled lenses that I don't want. Is that right? Should I buy now and maximize my time getting used to the camera before I travel or should I wait and see if there are bargains to be had?

Thanks, all.
