EOS R AF with 1.2.0 firmware

Hi!

It’s been bugging me a bit for a while and almost turned into real frustration every now and then so I gotta ask;

Is it just me who finds the EOS R AF to have taken a turn for the worse with the 1.2.0 firmware?

Where it before was impossible to miss I now find it to miss more even with no movement. I also tried everything with my kids on a trampoline and it just hunted when they did flips. Worked okay just up and down, but I could’ve used One Shot for that and it wouldn’t miss.

Is it more prone to miss now? I think so at least...

Please chime in if you have any observations to share.

Is the Canon EOS C500 Mark II finally coming in 2019? [CR1]

We’ve been told that Canon will finally announce a successor to the Cinema EOS C500 cinema camera. A camera that never really had a market, and is one of the few sales failures of the Cinema EOS lineup.
We’ve been told that the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II was shown to a very select group of dealers at NAB 2019 back in April, with a potential launch coming sometime in 2019.
We have reported that a new Cinema EOS camera was coming this year, but signs had pointed to a Cinema EOS C300 Mark III being the camera we’d see. There is a chance we see both.
Additionally, the source says that the C500 Mark II will be a “completely different take” as far as Cinema EOS cameras go. We’re not sure what that means, but it could be exciting.
More to come…

Canon explains RF lens technology and why bigger is better (sometimes)

Canon once again talks about the benefits of the bigger diameter RF mount over the older, and smaller lens mounts in the video above.
So why’ll we wait for more RF lenses, we can at least learn a bit about them.
From Canon Imagine Plaza:
Canon proudly introduces a new imaging system, the EOS R System, with RF lenses at its core. But what makes these lenses so outstanding? This video introduces the innovative features of RF lenses that open up new possibilities in photographic expression.

The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II appears to be just around the corner, one could assume the PowerShot G7 X Mark III will soon follow

The PowerShot G7 X Mark III has been the latest unicorn in the rumor world, we’ve seen subtle and major leaks over the last year or so, but still no announcement.
Nokishita is now reporting that the PowerShot G5 X Mark II has appeared on order sheets for dealers, which means we’re likely going to see an announcement before the end of August, maybe even as early as July. Rumors about the PowerShot G5 X Mark II started appearing earlier this year.
The last we were told, was that both cameras would be announced near the end of August alongside the EOS 90D, but that was never confirmed by us or others.
It’s possible that the PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G7 X Mark III get announced at different times some time this year.

Lens galleries on life support?

I wonder if it's the economy, the lack of interest, some fear of posting, or some other factor, but CR's lens galleries are pretty much withering on the vine. Looks like less than a half-dozen Rf mount lens photos, and they are all taken with the kit lens, the 24-105mm.

Posting in all the lens galleries seems way down from a few years ago...But I guess Rf in particular is just slow to catch on.

Note that I posted here because I see the topic as more about gear use and acquisition, and also because it seems hardly anybody is paying attention to the galleries!

RF 50mm f/1.2L on DxOMark: How to decipher?

If anyone can explain what this means in the context of other reviews, I'd appreciate the insights! For example, opiticallimits (nee photozone) is practically breathless:

DxOMark...Is the reviewer just being coldly clinical to convey objectivity? Because it seems she sees it as nothing special, just incrementally better than the ef 50mm f/1.2L.

If all you want to do is bash DxOMark generally, without any explanations regarding this specific review, please save your time and ours. If you own this lens and have true insights, or you think you understand why the results line up the way they do because of testing methodology (or lack of), please chime in!

Thanks!

Extenders, Still worth it, now that cameras have tiny pixels?

I shoot most field sports in both day and night conditions. When I acquired my 400mm F2.8 IS almost 11 years ago, I purchased a 1.4X and 2.0X Externder, both version II. At the time I was shooting a 5D with 12.8 MP, and I found the quality not perfect, but much better than simply cropping. A shot of a batter from the outfield fence for example requires an 800mm, 1200 if you want to fill the frame on FF.

Then I acquired a 7D. Some time later I sold my Version II extenders and bought version III for both 1.4X and 2.0X Extender, which were better.

Now that I have a 7Mark II, and my 5D is a Mark IV, I find I don't use the extenders much. Cropping works seemingly just as well. I have owned both a 1DX mark 1 & II over time, but sold them.

I have toyed with the idea of purchasing an 800mm IS lens, but when I look at image quality comparisons on The digital Picture (dot com) the quality seems similar to my lens and the 2X extender V III.

Just looking for a discussion here.

with the price of RF L glass might as well jump to Fuji gfx?

So I bought the Eos R at launch, aiming to future proof expensive lens purchases (I have several mostly lower end Ef lenses). Was even prepared to pay the big bucks for the new RF L primes slowly as they come out. Then in a review for the RF 50mm someone mentioned the price of the eos r plus RF 50mm not being far off the Fujifilm gfx 50r (medium format) plus the 50mm equivalent lens. For an 85mm equivalent prime it’s 2200 vs 2700 for the new RF lens. It got me thinking- if I’m willing to pay more than medium format prices for lenses, should I be saving my money to eventually go into crop medium format instead? I realise medium format is not for everyone, but judging from the way the gfx system is headed it made me stop and think.

What do people think about Fuji gfx compared to Canon RF?

What about that EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS from Canon?

It took but a few minutes to get my first inquiry about Canon’s plans for an EF 200-600mm lens once the announcement of the Sony FE 200-600 F5.6-6.3 G OSS for their mirrorless line.
We know Canon has been working on such a lens in the past, based off of some rumors and patents we’ve seen over the years. However, nothing has come to fruition as of yet.
As we sit here, I have doubts that we’re ever going to see such a lens for the EF mount. The RF mount? That is probably more likely. However, I doubt the EF design would translate well over to the RF in a way that Canon would be happy with, so it could be a case of starting from square one with the design of an RF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS.
The image above is for the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM
