RF series microlenses....

Excuse me for asking. But I can't seem to shake the idea of the EOS R/RP cameras, using the sensors of the 5DmkIV and 6DmkII, with "microlens adjustment" to compensate for the shorter back focal distance, are less than optimal with lenses of a longer back focal distance.

Here I am shooting with 16-35/2.8 ii and iii, 14/2.8ii, 16-35/4IS ... and I can't help but think they're not going to perform as well on the mirrorless bodies as on my 5DmkIV's and 5DmkIII because of the sensor microlens optimization.

Yah... I pulled the trigger on an RP, then an R just to say I did, but the question remains (for a week or so at least).

Any thoughts?

Art Morris very vocal move from Canon to Nikon (an update)

So a few months ago I we had a pretty heated thread (it actually spread across several threads) that involved Art Morris’ very vocal and dismissive move from Canon to Nikon because of his perception that the D5 and D850 AF blew the 1DX MkII and 5D MkIV out of the water. He railed against the Canon AF for quite some time suggesting that the Nikon AF was his utopia and he had never found anything close to it and that his old Canon AF was akin to a blind man using manual focus.

Well here’s the funny thing, I saw him this evening and he has sold all his Nikon gear and is now using exclusively Sony, specifically for BIF he uses an A9 and the 100-400 often with the 2x TC. He says the handholdability of the effective 800mm and 92% AF coverage is the best he has ever used (along with several more very harsh digs about Canon AF).

Is the term ISO “totally fake”?

Tony Northrup has posted a video discussing the exposure term ISO and has deemed it “totally fake”. It’s an interesting take on the use of this legacy term in digital photography.
Tony summarizes:

It’s just a post-processing instruction; generally, it doesn’t physically change anything about the picture taking process, unlike shutter speed and aperture.
While the term “ISO” refers to a real standard, camera manufacturers don’t comply with that standard, like, at all. Many cameras are more than a full stop off the proper ISO. For that reason, light meters simply won’t work as you expect them to. Using the same settings on multiple cameras will yield very different results.
High ISO could be eliminated completely; it’s just an arbitrary limit to a multiplication problem.
Low ISO could be eliminated by simply using image averaging, allowing us to get long exposures in-camera without using an ND filter. This would also reduce noise in good conditions.

RF Mount in Cinema EOS

I've been seeing a lot of rumors lately addressing a CX00 version camera being announced with an RF mount. From my understanding, all RF mount lenses are focus by wire. That, at least to me, kills any hope it would have of working on a larger budget set. Suer dpaf, or whatever the next iteration of it is may be incredible, but unless my 1st AC can hit the marks over and over again, I don't see how it will be implemented.

What are the thoughts around that? How could this be worked around for RF lenses? Am I totally wrong with them all being focus by wire?

Canon USA website has a new 'recommend a lens' feature that is comically bad

Go to the 'Products' section then 'Lenses' and it offers to walk through a set of menus to advise you...

What model camera do you have? 77D.
What do you want to take pictures of? Action.
Indoor or outdoor? Indoor.
Are you willing to spend more or less than $500? More.
We recommend just for you: $350, EF-M 55-200 in silver or grey.

Oops?

Patent: More diffractive optics super telephoto lenses

I’ll be honest, the first 20 or so patents relating to diffractive optics lenses had me excited about what was coming down the pipeline. However, the last bunch of patents for DO optical formulas hasn’t really given me a lot of hope that we’re going to see new and exciting super telephoto lenses from Canon.
Below are three embodiments that show 400mm, 600mm, and 800mm DO optical formulas.
Japan Patent Application 2019-028317

Canon XF400 or Canon C100 mark II

Hello Folks,

Need your advice.
I am looking forward to buy a video camera for shooting mostly Birds and wildlife.
I need a camera which has good auto focus tracking, decent slow motion(for flying/Diving birds), Sharp videos (no moire etc), well controlled rolling shutter, good in low light(Pref less noise in the dark areas especially in the wooded region), Get more reach by spending less :D
I am confused between Canon XF400 and Canon C100 mark II. 4K is really not a requirement for me its only a good to have feature.
Why compare these two well it almost costs the same. at least the difference is not huge

Can anyone who has experience of both please advice which will be a better option? or Should I wait Until April for further announcements? If you have any other recommendation Please feel free. My Budget is around $4K.

I understand that XF400 does 4K 60fps and also has high zoom in 1080. C100 mark II I Can use my existing glasses.

I Currently use Canon 5D mark III + Canon 100-400mm IS I , 100mm macro, 40mm stm, 50mm 1.8. I find Videos on 5D to be soft and I never try to autofocus. I mostly manually focus most of the times for videos.

Thanks,
Karthik

Photography Printers for use with Linux

Hello folks,
I've recently disposed of my Windows licenses and switched over to Ubuntu. While I've found suitable alternatives for just about every other part of the photography process, I have not found a suitable printer. Does anyone here successfully use a relatively affordable photographic printer along with a Linux-based photo editing computer? If so, which model?

Thanks!
