Canon said to have scrapped at least one DSLR in development [CR2]

We’re told that Canon has scrapped development of at least one DSLR in favour of a mirrorless option. We weren’t told which potential DSLR has been scrapped, but it sounds plausible.
The same source said to expect 3 new APS-C DSLRs in 2019, but not to expect any full-frame EOS DSLR bodies next year. Though it was mentioned that the follow-up to the EOS-1D X Mark II is well on its way in its development, but not to expect the new camera until 2020 ahead of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

It was also claimed that Canon recently showed a roadmap in a marketing meeting that listed 3 unreleased EOS R bodies, along with 5 RF lenses. All of these were listed to arrive before Q2 2020. Though it’s noted the date range for the announcements was quite broad.
As for the DSLR that was potentially scrapped during development? We’d put our money on the EOS 5DS line of bodies. We really don’t think a DSLR sequel is coming for that series and that we’ll get an EOS R body instead.

OMG, what should I do? DPReview scores Eos R just at 79 - ;-)

I just read the brand new review of the EOS R (https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-r/11).
OMG! What should I do? I bought one and I arranged to work with it and it takes really fine and pleasent pictures!
Am I just to senile to recognize the 10 points lack (between my Sonys and the Eos R)?
Should I join an DPReview course in photographing to learn how to see the differences between the holys and the garbages?
Should I unsubscribe my German magazines (Color Foto and Fotomagazin) as they rated the Eos R well? They seem not knowing what they are talking about, because DPReview rates it low?

Capture One Pro 12 - For the EOS R...

Over the weekend it seems like there were a couple of threads started on some of the other big forums that were quickly removed... The posts were about the beta version of Capture One Pro 12. Does anyone have any "rumors" about C1 Pro 12 actually being in Beta, or near to release?

This time last year and the year before - when I was waiting for a release to support the 5D4 - there was already a full blown discussion of the Beta version.

I'm ready for any information I can get my hands on. Switching back to lightroom after 3 years of C1 has me way out of my comfort zone and missing the image quality I've become accustomed to.

Rare lens damaged in shipping, what would you do?

I ordered a 200 1.8, it arrived damaged. It was a good deal to begin with since it was missing the hood. It arrived with the ring around the front bent in two spots. The seller offered a refund, but I'm tempted to negotiate a large discount on it since it's damaged noe, and keep it. I know I won't be able to get parts for it, but maybe this ring can easily be removed and straightened out? Does anyone know? I'm also kinda concerned about the rest of the lens since obviously it took a pretty good hit.

Overall I'm just really angry that another one of these amazing and rare lenses is now damaged because it wasn't packed well.

What do you guys think?2018-11-17 09.16.13.jpg2018-11-17 09.15.50.jpg

Patent: Superzoom lenses for EF and RF mounts

Japan Patent Application 2018-180203 shows off some optical formulas for superzooms with both EF and RF mounts.
EF mount optical formulas included in this patent:

EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6

RF mount optical formulas included in this patent:

RF 25-300mm f/3.5-5.6

EOS R, RF24-105/4 and RF 35/1.8 tested by German "fotomagazin"

Hi everybody!

The German journal "fotomagazin" has tested the EOS R, RF24-105/4 and RF 35/1.8 in its 12/2018 edition.

Both lenses get 5 of 5 stars and "super" rating. Test includes optical and mechanical construction.
The zoom is weak at the wide end but delivers very good to excellent results at 50 and 105 mm.
The RF 35 is already very good max. aperture and excellent when stopped down one or two steps.

The EOS R is tested against the other FF competitors from Sony and Nikon. The built up an voerall score from IQ, speed (FPS and AF), features and handling.
The overall winner is the Alpha 7R III (91%/5 stars) with Alpha 9 (89%/4), Z7 (89%/4) and EOS R (88%/4) as follow up.

They call it a “good restart” for Canon. And I think this is promissing.

To me most delightful point is that the Canon and the Nikon had the fastest AF with values below 0,1sec.
So this means that Canon was not exaggerating on this.

By the way:
The Alpha 9 AF speed was at about 0,2 sec with the other Sony bodies even slower.
The overall loser was the Leica SL because of its bad IQ.

Second Curtain Flash wireless Canon v Yongnuo

Can anyone enlighten me as to why on earth canon speedlites and transmitters wont work in second curtain flash mode wireless , however the Yongnuo copy transmitter and flashes do and in fact the yongnuo transmitter sends the info to a canon flash and works fine but using the canon transmitter wont work , cant work out any sense in this ? , my YN transmitter is however poorly made and falling to bits so having to botch it to get it working and would have rather relied on the Canon !!....

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Sports coming December 14, 2018

Back in September, Sigma announced the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Sports along with four other new Global Vision lenses. The shipping dates of the 5 lenses all seem to differ from one another.
According to Nokishita, the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Sports will begin shipping worldwide on December 14, 2018. The current rumored pricing is ¥164,700 including tax ($1450USD). Expect the USA price to be well below the converted price.

The predicted first half of 2019 Canon product announcement roadmap

The rumor mill has slowed considerably since the launch of the EOS R system, which was to be expected. There are no more Canon cameras or lenses being announced for the rest of 2018. I suspect we’re going to see more emphasis from Canon on rebates and deals for Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season.
We should start seeing announcements almost immediately in 2019.

CES – Las Vegas, USA // January 8, 2019 – January 11, 2019
We think we’re finally going to see a replacement for the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II for CES in January. We’re told this camera will be able to shoot 4K with DPAF. We may also see another G series PowerShot camera, but details have been scarce so far.
We may also see some other unique camera products, such as this 360-degree camera.
We do not expect any ILC announcements for ahead of this show.

Is the RF 28-70 f2 trying to be too many things at once?

Let me say right up front that I think it's great that Canon is already trying to push the boundaries of what's capable with the RF lens mount. The fact that anything as crazy as a full frame 28-70 f2 exists at all is great, and I hope Canon keeps pushing.

But honestly, from the standpoint of "would I actually buy this," I'm having trouble getting excited about this lens. It's massively big and heavy, and massively expensive. And for all of that, what do you really get? It's not quite as fast as a prime (not even close to the fastest L primes), and it doesn't have quite the wide angle capabilities of a 24-70. I feel like it's a lens that's painted itself into a corner by trying to be everything all at once. And as a result it doesn't really give you the speed you'd expect from a prime, or the focal length range you'd expect from a zoom.

Maybe it's just the way I shoot, but I never really expect one lens to do everything for me. If I want speed and a nice shallow DOF, I'll use a prime. If I want the versatility of a zoom, I'll use that. A 24-70 2.8 is, to me, limited enough in its zoom range without losing another 4mm in the wide end. So honestly, while technically I'm sure it will be a great lens, it doesn't really seem to excel at having a large zoom range or a very fast aperture, which makes me wonder if it would ever be worth dropping $3000 on.

Canon EOS C300 Mark III coming in late 2019, with possible 8K option [CR1]

We’re being told that the next iteration of the C300 will be coming in late 2019.
On an interesting note. We’re told that the EOS C300 Mark III will be launched at 4K but will be able to be upgraded to 8K for an additional cost after purchase. We have no information on how the upgrade would work, or how much it would cost.
Other features will include 4.4.4 as well as a new electronic image stabilization, but no details were given for the latter.
Testing for the new Cinema EOS body is already under way.
More to come…

First low(ish) cost RF lens adaptors.

Browsing Aliexpress this morning I found that Chinese company Amopofo have launched a range of manual focus adaptors for FD, Nikon and other lens types to RF. Prices are not unreasonable.

https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20181112235653&SearchText=EOSR+amopofo

I have no connection to either aliexpress or Amopofo, just passing on what seems a useful discovery.

fly my pretty...

taken earlier in the year.. was more fiddling with the On1 2019 Beta and I think I'm getting the hang of the tool (some quirks that annoying, but more or less now ready to take on LR).

Also... bloody hell if my 80D with an old 180L macro doesn't take nice shots :) still want better gear, but... its not bad at all!_MG_1799.jpg

EOS R: Internal LCD monitor functionality when using HDMI-out for video

Does anyone have experience with using the EOS R's HDMI-out to record video into an external recorder like an Atomos? I have a few questions that don't seem to be answered by the manual, assuming it's possible to record to the external recorder and still use the EOS R's LCD monitor/EVF:

1.) Is there a way to disable the info readout on the HDMI-out but not on the EOS R's LCD monitor/EVF? Meaning can I still see the focus box/selection/aperture value/ISO/shutter speed on the internal monitor but not on the external recorder's monitor?

2.) When recording, do you lose any functionality on the EOS R's LCD monitor, like touch to focus or using the Quick Settings to change AF modes or white balance?

3.) Is face tracking still available when using HDMI-out?

4.) Is it possible to record to the internal card while recording on the external recorder?

5.) If it is in fact possible to record to the internal card and the external recorder simultaneously, can a user start and stop video recording on the unit without affecting the external recorder's signal?

Thank you!!

Problem with information overlaid in the EVF not showing up at times

Has anyone else experienced this? Somewhat frequently, when I go to look through the viewfinder, the image in the viewfinder has absolutely none of the proper info overlaid on top of the video stream in the viewfinder... No AF point, so shooting info, no grid display, nothing. The camera still seems to function, but it's hard to say for sure since there's no info displayed in the EVF confirming that the image is in focus, etc. If I quickly switch the camera off and then back on, even without taking my eye away from the viewfinder, all of the overlaid information comes back. This is very annoying, and I hope Canon fixes this bug.

Yes the sensor to switch to the viewfinder is annoyingly overly sensitive, no I don't want Canon to change it

I've seen a lot of complaints about Canon making the sensor that automatically switches over to the EVF too sensitive. I completely agree. It annoyingly switches over to the EVF at times if anything gets near it. But I absolutely don't want Canon to change it.

If you notice, when you put your eye up to the EVF, there is very little lag in switching over to the EVF. As soon as your eye gets up to it, it's seemingly on. This is great. It reduces the chance of missing a shot waiting for the camera to switch over to the EVF.

Realize that dumbing down the sensitivity of the sensor would result in the camera not switching over to the EVF until your eye was that much closer to the EVF, thereby causing there to be a lag when switching over to the EVF. As annoying as the overly sensitive sensor is, I think it would be ten times more annoying to put the viewfinder up to your eye and have to stare at a black screen for a second while the camera switches over to the EVF. By making the sensor sense objects further away from the sensor, Canon has effectively given the camera a head start in switching over to the EVF, ensuring that by the time your eye is actually at the viewfinder ready to take a photo, the EVF is turned on.

A little bit off topic: Bashing (Eos R) and seriousness of reviews - post serious EOS R reviews

Lying at home after being hit by an gastrointestinal virus, I spent a lot of time looking various reviews and videos about newer bodies.
IMO a lot of the "reviews" (with a big count of clicks and likes) of the Eos R and other new cameras do copy arguments of pre-reviewers and do blow up negative points. (just a few mention the closed curtain an other small goodies on this soooo bad body)

Others are bashing new products by an gibe in non reviews (e.g. https://www.dpreview.com/videos/0796181730/dpreview-tv-time-lapse-photography, look about at 6:00. Why not mentioning their holy A7III too?... If the reviewer wants to claim the missing intervalometer feature in some bodies, he could mention that without showing just ONE product...)

So, if you know about serious reviews of the EOS R, please post them here.

Thanks
