Brand New Wide Aperture Zoom: Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art

The newest arrival on the Sigma Global Vision scene, the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art lens is designed for 50-megapixel plus cameras and achieves the legendary Art lens optical quality with three FLD glass elements, three SLD glass elements, and three aspherical lens elements, including one 80mm ultra high precision molded glass aspherical element. With near zero distortion (less than 1%) and minimal transverse chromatic aberration, flare and ghosting, the new Sigma 14-24mm offers constant F2.8 brightness throughout the zoom range and delivers optimal image quality at every focal length and shooting distance. The high-speed, high-accuracy autofocus allows photographers to capture incredible, in-the-moment images. Additionally, the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art incorporates the Sports line level dust- and splash proof design, allowing for the lens to be used during varying weather conditions.

Workhorse Zoom Lens: Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Art

Touting a brand new Optical Stabilizer (OS), Hypersonic Motor (HSM) for highly efficient and fast autofocus, as well as a dust- and splash-proof mount with rubber sealing, the revamped 24-70mm Art covers a wide array of shooting scenarios. Its DNA includes three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and four aspherical elements to minimize coma, transverse chromatic aberration and distortion from center to edges. The 24-70mm F2.8 Art aspherical elements use Sigma’s groundbreaking thicker center glass design and highly precise polishing process, delivering stunning images and bokeh effects. The lens’ purpose-built structure boasts a new metal barrel for optimal durability with TSC composite internal moving components designed to resist thermal contraction and expansion.

Must-Have Lenses in Portrait Photographer’s Toolkit: Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG HSM Art and 135mm F1.8 DG HSM Art

The Sigma 85mm Art employs a completely new high-performance optical design and premium components purpose built by Sigma R&D to produce the visually stunning bokeh effect that attracts so many photographers. The lens’ advanced architecture features two SLD (special low dispersion) glass elements and one glass element with a high rate of anomalous partial dispersion and refraction.

The Sigma 135mm Art is a mid-range telephoto prime lens, touting outstanding sharpness and great IQ from edge to edge. The 1.8 F-stop delivers greater “shallow depth of field” and isolation of subjects. The outstanding compression effect makes it equally as powerful for up-close and full-length portraits. Its new large Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) delivers ample torque to the focusing group for outstanding speed, ensuring exceptionally stable performance even at lower speeds and allowing for fast autofocus photography.

Raising the Standard: Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art

The Sigma 50mm Art has been designed to set a new standard for 50mm prime performance. A Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures quiet, smooth and accurate autofocusing and paired with Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass and Super Multi-Layer coating, the 50mm Art is a high performance lens for the high megapixel DSLR sensors. Thirteen elements in eight groups allow for unsurpassed performance even at wide apertures, and close-up photography is easily managed with a minimum focusing distance of 40cm.

Tamron Teases a New Lens Ahead of CP+

HTML:
*Update* I am apparently blind and didn’t see the ring at the top of the lens, this is definitely a zoom. I’d like to think Tamron wouldn’t tease an APS-C superzoom, but……

Not to be outdone by Sigma’s recent 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art series lens announcement, it looks like Tamron has a new prime in store for us. Photo Rumors found the first teaser for the lens.

Tamron tends to make similar focal length primes as Sigma, but they’re usually a bit slower.

Could this be a 100mm f/2 VC or a 135mm f/2 VC? Or like a few people on the forum think, it could be a zoom. Hopefully it’s something for full frame DSLRs.

Sound off in the forum on what you hope this new Tamron is.

1080 video quality on 5dmk4 and 1dx2 vs competition?

I have seen some comments elsewhere about the 1080 quality of the Canon cameras being soft and exhibiting moire etc, it seems to be more so in the older cameras, 6d, 5dmk3 etc but a few about the 5dmk4 and 1dx2 have also come up.

How do these two compare to the likes of Nikon, Sony, Panasonic etc for their 1080 60fps or 120 fps quality? Asking for someone who is looking at a 5dmk4 in the future, from a 6d and 5dmk3, but currently uses my a7r3 for 60 fps video

I know the 4k is a sore spot for some, with the crop and file size, does this provide a better quality output, for the storage space?

Thanks.

Industry News: RED and Foxconn Plan To Make Affordable 8K Digital Cinema Cameras

HTML:
According to a report in the Nikkei Asian Review, Foxconn Technology Group plans to work with RED Digital Cinema and enter the digital cinema market to produce “affordable” 8K cameras.

Production of the iPhone brings in more than 50% of Foxconn’s revenue, and with demand weaking, the company is planning to diversify and move into other sectors, starting with the digital cinema.

Mr Gou said of working with RED: “We will make cameras that will shoot professional-quality films in 8K resolution but at only a third of current prices and a third of current camera sizes”.

Foxconn acquired Sharp’s semiconductor business back in 2016 and that acquisition will play a critical role in making camera components.

If this works out, we could be seeing some interesting products in the future.

The Contrast AF System in the LUMIX GX9 features DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology and excels in both speed and accuracy by exchanging digital signals between the camera and the lens at max. 240 fps*¹, for ultra-fast auto focusing in approx. 0.07 sec*². A range of extensive AF functions include Face/Eye Detection AF, Pinpoint AF, One-shot AF and advanced Low Light AF to enhance usability to comply with various shooting situations. Live View Boost makes it possible to check composition even in total darkness by boosting sensitivity just for live view.

The LUMIX GX9 records smooth, high-resolution 4K video in 3840×2160 at 30p or 24p in MP4. 4K PHOTO is easier to use in more creative ways with Auto Marking and Sequence Composition, two new additions to Post Focus, Focus Stacking, Light Composition and 4K Live Cropping.

Ultra HD 4K video and 4K PHOTO

With a high-speed sensor signal readout and engine processor, the LUMIX GX9 records smooth, high-resolution 4K videos in 3840×2160 resolution at 30p or 24p in addition to the Full-HD 1,920×1,080 60p videos with practical full-time AF. With this technology, LUMIX 4K PHOTO lets users capture perfect moments by extracting single frames from 4K burst files shot at 30 fps to save as 8-megapixel equivalent photos.

Choosing the best shots out of hundreds of 4K video frames is now easier with a newly added Auto Marking function. Auto Marking identifies the frame most different from others in the file to help minimize the time it takes to choose the best individual shot. A Sequence Composition function creates a stromotion image in-camera by synthesizing multiple images shot at fixed frame to produce a unique image of a subject’s motion without special retouching.

The LUMIX GX9 also includes Post Focus, a function selects an in-focus area even after shooting. Post Focus is helpful in situations such as macro shooting where strict focusing is required or for changing expressions by changing the focused subject. This capability combines high-speed, high-precision DFD (Depth From Defocus) auto focus technology and 4K technology. A Focus Stacking function adjusts depth of field after shooting by combining multiple images shot with Post Focus in the camera. Now users don’t need to focus strictly while shooting because they can create images with the defocus level they want or pan-focus simply by selecting the focus area after shooting — beneficial when shooting macro images of insects, small accessories and so on.

LUMIX GX9 also incorporates a Light Composition function, a new 4K PHOTO option. The camera synthesizes images by choosing and saving a brighter pixel to easily produce more dramatic images of fireworks or night scenery in-camera. What’s more, the LUMIX GX9 also enables 4K Live Cropping in video recording to realize stable panning or zooming. In panning shots, users just set the viewing angle to begin and end with for smooth panning imagery without using special equipment like a slider. And in zooming, users can set the after-zoomed viewing angle firs to ensure the subject is perfectly in the frame. The imagery of zooming is smooth because it does not move the zoom lens physically.

The LUMIX GX9 includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi® connectivity for a more flexible shooting experience and instant image sharing with easy operation. Compatibility with Bluetooth 4.2 (Bluetooth Low Energy) enables consistent connection with a smartphone or tablet with minimum power consumption.

Fujifilm 2017 Q3 Financials are Impressive, Lead by the Instax Lineup and Not Mirrorless

HTML:
Fujifilm has released their 2017 Q3 financials, and have shown impressive growth in revenue and operating income, there are a few caveats though.

Canon News explains:

…. when you investigate the details of where and what Fuji is selling and what makes up most of that money in sales, you quickly realize that most of their sales is coming from their wildly profitable and successful Instax lineup and not their mirrorless cameras. It’s safe to assume then, that it’s unknown where the increase in operating profit is coming from because there’s too much difference in the sales data areas in Fuji’s imaging departments either by instax or electronic imaging.

Also, Year on Year quarterly percentages will be heavily influenced by the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016 – overly inflating year on year growth statistics. Which is why just about every analysis we did included the earthquake as a contributing factor to some statistical information. Read the full article

Review: Google Pixel 2 for Photography by DPReview

HTML:
DPReview has completed their review of the Google Pixel 2 smartphone from a photographers perspective. Just like I have found, DPReview has come away impressed with the quality of the Pixel 2 camera in most situations, and it seems it will only continue to get better as software improves its performance.

From DPReview:

The Google Pixel 2 combines hardware with powerful software to produce incredibly detailed and vibrant still images in both daylight and low light. Class-leading dual pixel AF is fast and accurate even in low light, and 4K/30p is both beautiful and also smooth thanks to optical + electronic stabilization. The camera’s background blurring mode is among the best. And unlimited free photo storage via Google Photo is just the icing on the cake. Read the full review

Whenever I tell people “it’s a great camera”, I always end the sentence with “for a smartphone”, and I don’t see that changing for the foreseeable future.

Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 Coming for Photokina [CR2/CR3]

HTML:

This has been a hard lens to pin down, likely because it’s still a long way off, with the expected announcement in August/September 2018 ahead of Photokina.

We reported last month that the lens was going to be a 50mm equivalent for APS-C and that it was going to be fast.

We rate this information in two parts.

The [CR3] Part:

The lens will have a focal length of 32mm and won’t have IS.

The [CR2] Part:

The speed of the lens I haven’t been able to nail down with 100% certainty as of yet, it’ll either be f/1.4 or f/1.8 based on the conflicting information I have received.

Once I confirm 100% the speed of the lens, I’ll obviously let you know.

Patent: Improving Computational Photography With DPRAW

HTML:
We posted yesterday about a utility that looks to improve the dynamic range in the EOS 5D Mark IV, but using the two DPRAW exposures to blend a single exposure. One of the issues that arises when doing this is getting parallax errors.

Canon News has uncovered a very detailed patent that shows Canon is thinking along the same lines.

It seems that Canon has the same ideas, as they are investigating correcting the parallax error in post processing.

This would only be necessary if they are looking to improve the dynamic range response or combining two halves of the image computationally. This by nature of how the halves of the pixels are summed together happens naturally for normal images, but does not for dual pixel RAW file formats, where Canon outputs the one half of the pixel, and the full pixel output. Different things can be done to the image such as adjust the bokeh and AF fine point adjustment and now it looks like Canon is trying to do other things with the data.

The patent is quite detailed and goes a bit above our pay grade.

Patent: Image Sensor Stabilization

HTML:
Our previous post about what appeared to be image sensor stabilization in drawing from a lens stabilization patent proved to be false after further translation by Canon News.

However, an image sensor stabilization patent was uncovered.

From Canon News:

This patent shows clearly that canon is finally looking at stablizing the sensor.

Part 402 in the diagram is to move the actual sensor as described in the corresponding notations;

401 calculates a target value of an amount of rotation drive of the imaging device on the basic of a roll correction angle. On the basis of the target value of the calcuated amount of shift drive and the target value of rotation drive, the driving mechanism unit 402 moves the imaging device, so that shake correction and tilt correction is performed.

We missed after publishing this patent, that Keith at Northlight also uncovered this patent.

We’ve updated the previous post.

Patent: Lens Image Stabilization Patent Shows Sensor Based Stabilization

HTML:
Update: After further translation, the drawing likely shows the in camera level and orientation switch. However, a new patent uncovered does show sensor based image stabilization.

One thing this patent shows that’s interesting is what looks to be a 50mm HIS macro lens design.

Original Post: A USPTO patent for lens based image stabilization seems to show movement sensors inside the camera body suggesting sensor based stabilization.

While the patent doesn’t directly mention the sensor stabilization, the fact that it’s in the drawing is interesting.

The Canon EOS M50 Will Shoot 4K [CR3]

HTML:

We reported last month that the next mirrorless from Canon would shoot 4K video and it looks like we’ve confirmed that it will.

This would make the EOS M50 the first APS-C shooter in the Canon lineup to shoot 4K and adds a bit of credence to that special invite from one of Canon’s subsidiaries we were told about last month

The EOS M50 will remain an EF-M mount camera. Unfortunately, we have no other specifications at this time.

More to come…

Question about 5DMK IV 4k Files (workflow)

Hello All,
I have a couple of question about 4k video from my 5D MK IV.

1. I'm using a 2016 MacBook Pro and when I check get info in (QuickTime) from the 4k file it shows the color profile is PAL (1-1-6); but if the its a file I shot in 1080p it shows HD (1-1-1). When I see PAL I think of the TV format in Europe. I wanted to make sure I don't have a setting set wrong somewhere. Again this is only in 4k 23.98p ALL-I .MOV.

2. Working with MPEG 4k files; I find if I import the video files in FCP-X first then export them with Apple ProRes 422 the files are much easier to work with in Premiere Pro the application I more familiar with and it seems it faster than importing them in Premiere Pro as Proxies and then editing them. Will I loose any information doing it this way?

Thank you,
Joe

The History of Canon L Lenses

HTML:
Canon Europe has put together a great article about the history of Canon L lenses, including what they consider to be landmark lenses in the evolution of the series. It’s no surprise that innovation of lenses at Canon seems to be accelerating as every few years, there seems to be a new “world’s first”.

Below are some of the landmarks in the evolution of Canon L lenses:

1969: FL-F 300mm f/5.6

Canon’s first fluorite lens

Fluorite has some terrific properties for lenses, notably the complete removal of residual chromatic aberration and the ability to shorten the total lens length. And it’s widely used in current Canon L super-telephoto lenses. However, natural fluorite contains too many impurities to be used for lens manufacturing, as large crystals can’t be obtained. In 1969, Canon developed the technology to artificially ‘grow’ pure crystals, allowing for the production of the FL-F 300mm f/5.6, its first fluorite-based lens, and a revolutionary super-compact telephoto lens of its time.

1982: FD 14mm f/2.8L

Ultra wide-angle generated by original design tool

Ultra wide-angle lenses require complex designs and sophisticated manufacturing techniques. The FD 14mm f/2.8L was developed using an in-house design tool with an aspheric lens element to eliminate distortion, and produce the widest rectilinear prime lens in the FD range.

1989: EF 50mm f/1.0L USM

Standard lens boasting the world’s largest aperture

Fast prime lenses are not a modern invention! In 1989, this lens offered the world’s widest aperture for a 35mm single lens reflex camera. It was achieved using a sophisticated optical design that included two ground aspherical lenses and four high-refractive index glass lenses to produce high contrast and low lens flare even wide open at f/1.0. A floating lens construction was used to ensure image quality even at short focus distances, and the USM (UltraSonic Motor) autofocus motor offered high-speed, silent autofocus with full-time manual override.

1993: EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L USM

World’s first 10x zoom

This was the first 10x zoom lens for an interchangeable lens SLR and proved a powerful and versatile lens for sports photography, where speed and manoeuvrability are paramount. Designed with a six-group configuration, this lens used the fifth group for zooming, and achieved both a high zoom ratio and a compact design. Two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lenses provided good correction of chromatic aberration, high resolution and high contrast, and it came with an easily adjusted tripod foot.

1997: EF 300mm f/4L IS USM

First L lens with image stabiliser

Handheld telephoto photography is always a risky business for sports and wildlife photographers because of the potential for camera shake, but when Canon introduced its IS (Image Stabilisation) system for the first time on a professional lens, it offered effective shake compensation of two stops. This made handheld photography possible in situations where a tripod might otherwise have been needed, and offered photographers much more mobility. The IS unit offered two modes: Mode 1 for stationary subjects and Mode 2 for panning/tracking shots. Chromatic aberration was suppressed with two UD lenses and the lens was developed for high resolution and contrast.

2008: EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM

World’s first lens with SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating)

Lens coatings are not the most glamorous-sounding lens technology, but they are one of the most important, playing a vital part in the suppression of ghosting, flare and contrast loss. The SWC coating adopted for this lens has a structure finer than the wavelength of visible light, which was the first time this had ever been done. This minimised flare and ghosting caused by large angles of incidence, which could not be prevented with regular coatings. The EF 24mm f/1.4L also incorporated two glass moulded aspherical lenses and two UD lenses to eliminate aberrations. The SWC system was earmarked as one of Canon’s key technologies for future development.

2009: EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

World’s first Hybrid IS

Macro photography poses special problems for image stabilisation systems because it introduces a second type of potential camera movement parallel to the camera position. The solution was the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS, and the first use of a new Hybrid IS system, designed to compensate for this ‘shift’ blur. In addition to a regular angular shake sensor, this lens introduced an additional acceleration sensor for movement parallel to the image plane. Data generated by the two sensors was used to drive the optical correction unit using specially-developed algorithms, and brought improved shake correction for macro photography.

2010: EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

First EF lens with fluorine coating

Telephoto lenses are particularly prone to picking up dust, moisture and grease on their front elements, partly because of their sheer size and partly because of the harsh outdoor environments they’re typically used in. The newly-developed fluorine coating on the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, however, was designed to repel dirt, which could have a negative impact on image quality, and reduce the need for manual lens cleaning. The fluorocarbon coating is water- and oil-repellent, and even if dust does stick to the surface, it’s easier to remove. The fluorine coating also makes it possible to wipe away finger grease, for example, without solvents.

2011: EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM

First all-round-to-diagonal line fisheye zoom

Fisheye lenses come in two types: circular fisheyes, which create a fully circular image within the frame area, and diagonal fisheyes which fully fill the frame area with a rectangular image. Normally, if you want both types you have to buy two lenses, but in 2011 Canon launched the first lens to offer both a full 180-degree circular image to a full-frame diagonal 180-degree field of view in a single lens. Fisheye lenses are specialised tools you won’t need often, so being able to carry one lens offering both types – rather than having to carry two – is a major advantage, and this lens’s operation is very simple because the frame coverage is linked to the zoom setting. At the widest focal length a circular image is produced and this enlarges to fill the frame because the zoom setting is increased, with a marker on the zoom ring showing the point where the view fills the frame.

2013: EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x

First super-telephoto lens with a built-in extender

Teleconverters, – often known as ‘extenders’ – are widely used by sports and wildlife photographers to extend the reach of telephoto lenses. The gain in focal length is offset by a loss in maximum aperture, so they work best with a lens that has a wide maximum aperture to start with. The EF 200-400mm f/4L is the first super-telephoto to take this to its logical extreme and have a 1.4x converter built in. This extends its focal range to 280-560mm with a maximum aperture of f/5.6. Not only that, it can also be used with a regular EF 1.4x III extender to produce a further reach advantage up to 780mm, with an aperture of f/8 – still within the autofocus limits of cameras like the EOS-1D X II.

2014: EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

First lens to adopt ASC coatings to further reduce flare

ASC stands for Air Sphere Coating, a film which contains ‘balls of air’, which is evaporated on to the lens surface as a thin film. This strange-sounding coating provides a large reduction in flare and ghosting at light angles close to perpendicular, making it particularly suitable for telephoto lenses and their relatively narrow angles of view. The lens also makes use of one fluorite lens and one super UD lens, plus an image stabiliser unit offering four stops of shake compensation.

2015: EF 11-24mm f/4L USM

World’s widest angle ultra-wide zoom

One of Canon’s most spectacular ultra wide-angle lenses, the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM boasts the widest angle of view of any rectilinear (non-fisheye) lens, including primes. It makes use of some of Canon’s key imaging and manufacturing technologies – including a ground aspherical lens, UD and super-UD lenses for chromatic aberration suppression, and both SWC and ASC anti-reflection lens coatings.

2015: EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM

First use of BR lens

2015 was the year of another landmark lens launch. The EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM is the first lens to use Canon’s BR (Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics) lens technology, with a material that provides ‘anomalous’ dispersion characteristics with strong refraction of blue light (hence the name). This makes it perfect for correcting the kind of chromatic aberration found in large aperture lenses. There is high image quality from the centre to the edge of the frame, and excellent performance even wide open, allowing the unusual combination of a wide angle of view and shallow depth of field for creative background blur. Read more…
