D850 a Baby Nikon D5: 46 MP + 10 fps + D5 AF setup

Seems like the D850 is not a D810 replacement, but a new fancier price point above the D810 (or the D850 would take the top spot and the D810 would walk down in pricing a la the 5D3 in recent years):

https://petapixel.com/2017/07/31/nikon-d850-will-baby-nikon-d5-reports-say/

https://nikonrumors.com/2017/07/31/the-nikon-d850-is-the-baby-nikon-d5-camera.aspx/#more-114369

If this rumor is true, both this and the Sony A99 II will be non-gripped FF cameras with more than twice the (MP x fps) throughput of the 5D4. :o

Sigma 14/1.8 Art

The legacy if the Sigma Art prime lenses created great expectations for me as professional Astronomer when the new 14mm incarnation arrived! A trip to the dark Carinthian Alps under a 21.7mag/"² sky allowed a first comparison with the Canon EF 14/2.8 II prime I used before! I think the result is clear ... A widefield dream come true! All comparison pics are ordered the same way, upper row Canon, lower Sigma, always with the aperture sequence 1.8/2.8/4.0 with exposure times leading tho the same exposure level. The fist pic compares vignetting, the second the centre region, the third the upper left corner and then there are two astro pics, one 20 second single shoot and then a 6 pics stack of 30 second pics...

Hands on Field Test of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II

HTML:
The folks at The Camera Store in Calgary, Canada have completed their hands-on field test of the brand new Canon EOS 6D Mark II.</p>
<p><strong>Description:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The original Canon 6D was the entry to full-frame shooting for many photographers, but it’s been getting a little long in the tooth. The new version brings a number of features from the excellent 80D, along with a controversial new sensor. Is the 6D series still a great entry point into full frame? Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake went to shoot BTS of a commercial film shoot to find out!</p>

<p>Special thanks to DDG (www.ddg.tv) John Cameron (www.metaproductions.ca), and Dave Patrick at Jet1</p></blockquote>
<p>I generally think these guys are about the most honest reviewers out there and they have come away feeling the EOS 6D Mark II is a bit of a mixed bag. The feature set, usability and low light performance are to be commended, but the lack of 4K video and the lack of dynamic range improvement seem to be weighing heavily on this camera.</p>

Canon EOS 6D Mark II w/24-70mm f/4L IS Kits Delayed

HTML:
<p>The brand new Canon EOS 6D Mark II has begun shipping along with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II kit. However, it appears the EOS 6D Mark II w/24-70mm f/4L IS has been delayed. The kit was scheduled to begin shipping on August 4, 2017, however it has been pushed back indefinitely.</p>

<p>Canon claims demand has exceeded expectations and that is the reason for the delay.</p>

Canon High End Mirrorless Camera Talk [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that a roadmap slide at a recent Canon presentation mentioned a “high end mirrorless ILC” to be announced in Q4 of 2018.</p>
<p>Canon recently showed that sales of their EOS M system have grown 70% over the past year, and with Nikon set to announce a new high end mirrorless system, it’s obviously time for Canon to enter the same area.</p>
<p>With a product that far off, obviously there is no specifications or leaks about what is in the pipeline, Canon likely hasn’t come close to settling on the feature set of the camera. While “high end” doesn’t mean full frame, it’s safe to say that the Canon world likely won’t be ok with another APS-C mirrorless camera.</p>
<p>It was mentioned that no “high end” lenses for the mirrorless ILC were shown on the roadmap.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Review: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 OS Art by Lensrentals.com

HTML:
<p>Zach at <a href="http://www.pntrs.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Frent%2Fphoto%2Fcanon">Lensrentals.com</a> has completed his review of the brand new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 OS Art. Zach came away impressed with the lens, but maybe not impressed enough to buy one.</p>
<p>From the review:</p>
<blockquote><p>Much to my surprise, I fell in love when using this lens. However, that love I felt was for the focal range itself and not the lens. In short, 24-70mm is a fantastic focal length and makes for an exceptional all-around lens to use on the go. And by all accounts, Sigma does a good job showing off this focal length. However, Canon and Nikon both show it off better, and so when I’m looking for a 24-70mm lens to use as my next all around lens, I’m opting for the <a href="http://www.pntra.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2017%2F07%2Flensrentals-com-review-the-new-sigma-24-70mm-f2-8-dg-os-hsm-art-series-lens%2F">Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II</a> over the<a href="http://www.pntra.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2017%2F07%2Flensrentals-com-review-the-new-sigma-24-70mm-f2-8-dg-os-hsm-art-series-lens%2F"> Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art Series</a>. <a href="http://www.pntra.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2017%2F07%2Flensrentals-com-review-the-new-sigma-24-70mm-f2-8-dg-os-hsm-art-series-lens%2F">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>I haven’t use the lens yet, but I look forward to doing so in the future.</p>

Can you really tell which image is a 5d IV

Just a couple of well exposed shots at low ISO. I was out playing with old camera gear and new. While I love everything about my new 5d I won't say without one my photography is doomed. I bet I could even take nice pictures with a 6D mark II.

Cameras used here are a 1Ds markIII, a 6D, and a shiny new 5D IV

Lenses and Locations for San Francisco Trip...

Hi everyone

Next week I will be in San Francisco on business and should have some downtime (Most of the day Sunday and after 4-5 PM from Monday through Wednesday).

Any recommendations on lenses to bring? I have 16-35 f4, 24-70 f2.8, 100mm Macro, 70-200 f4 and Sigma 50 f1.4 ART. I could take the 24-70 and 70-200 to cover all focal lengths, but I usually take my 16-35 for city environments...

Besides the city area, I would love to grab some shots of the Golden Gate Bridge. Any recommendations for lenses and/or shooting locations are much appreciated. Any other areas of the city I should focus on during my limited time there?

Thanks
Jason

Eclipse lens/teleconvertor question

So I'm going to make the hike up to catch the totality for the eclipse, and I want to rent a better zoom lens for the event.

I've got a Canon M3 (with the EF adapter), and a 6D. The plan I thought of was to use one camera (with the zoom lens and teleconvertor) to photograph the eclipse itself, and then use the other with my 35mm Sigma art lens to do some landscape portraits with the eclipse in the scene.

1) I was looking at the lenses available, and they had a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 that I was thinking of getting. However, the only convertor I can see on the lens rental site is a 1.4x, which would get me about 560mm or so. Does anyone know if a 2x 3rd party teleconverter (either sigma or tamron) would work with that lens?

2) Alternatively, would the Sigma 150-600 f/5-6.3 be a better option for this situation? I do get a larger zoom, and since I'd be shooting at a larger f stop number, that shouldn't matter. Thoughts?

3) So given that I have the 35mm 1.4 for landscapes, and whichever zoom lens I end up picking for the sun shot itself, which lens should I put on which camera?

LensTip Review: Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art

More Sigma 24-70 Art review for your Friday:

http://www.lenstip.com/index.php?test=obiektywu&test_ob=507

Shorter FLs were sharper, 70mm it fell off a bit

Center of frame: better than the various 24-70 2.8 IS lenses (Nikon and Tamron), but worse than the 24-70 f/2.8L II

Outskirts of frame: Not stellar wide open, not terrible. Stopping down helps, of course.

AF is a good but not great result:

"The accuracy performance we assess positively, both in the studio and outdoor. For the most difficult combination of the 70 mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture, with the lens positioned before a testing chart, you might count on 88% of hits accurate within just 5% of difference from the best result. A bit worse hits but still completely acceptable (from 5 to 10% of difference from the best result) constituted 7% of all shots. There were 5% of shots considered by us to be totally missfocused (different by more than 20% from the sharpest photo). The results at the shorter end of the focal spectrum were even better due to the increase of the depth of field."

Before people freak out at a "totally misfocused 5%", see the caveats above. In the last year or so they have raised the bar on what they consider a miss. Also, their test camera is not the latest and greatest but is no slouch whatsoever -- it's a 5D3.
