Sigma 500mm f4 Sport review by DXOMark

Dxo has posted review of Sigma 500 f4 basically nearly on par with Canon's own 500mm f4 II IS.
https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Sigma-500mm-f-4-DG-OS-USM-S-Canon-lens-review-Super-sharp-shooter

Conclusion (from DxoMark)
Big, heavy, and expensive, a 500mm f/4 super telephoto is truly the preserve of the professional or extremely serious wildlife and sports photographer who requires plenty of reach, a fast aperture, and super-sharp results. As such, there are only a few such lenses available, but Sigma’s third-party 500mm f/4 gives photographers an alternative to Canon’s own-brand option.
The Sigma 500mm f/4 comes equipped with the advanced features the pros demand to enhance performance, including a focus limiter, focus recall buttons, image stabilizer, large lens hood and tripod collar for mounting to a monopod and quickly switching between vertical and horizontal shooting positions.
In terms of image quality, the Sigma 500mm f/4 is excellent, delivering high levels of uniform resolution on all the professional full-frame EOS 5DS R, 1D X Mark II, and 5D Mark IV DSLRs, with no geometric distortion nor problematic chromatic aberration to worry about. There’s some vignetting at the maximum f/4 aperture, but at around –1EV, this isn’t overly concerning and corner shading is virtually eliminated from f/5.6.
Head-to-head against the Canon EF 500 f/4L IS II USM, the Sigma 500mm f/4’s image quality compares very favorably. The Canon lens is fractionally sharper on the 5DS R, but the Sigma offers a modest improvement in resolution on the 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV. To be fair, there’s very little to separate them in real-world terms on any of these DSLRs, however, making the Sigma 500mm f/4 a great value option.

Anything shot with a 77D

I bought the 77D to use a backup for my 5D3 and as a travel camera. Here is an image from my first photoshoot with the 77D. This was done in my studio with natural daylight, so the lighting does make for a soft look. The first copy is full frame, ISO 400 with the 24mm pancake lens at F/2.8 and 1/60 second, hand held.

The second image is about a 1:1 crop of the image above.

This is not a scientific test, by any means, but I have to say I am very happy with the sensor performance of the 77D. It will fill my needs very nicely!

DPAF's Underlying Tech the Villain? (When all else ruled out)

[Since starting this thread I've learned that I was conflating DPAF as a focus system with the tech which makes it possible, that is, a dual-photodiode CMOS. Since my IQ problems involve images taken through the viewfinder, "DPAF" is not involved, though the dual-photodiode CMOS might be. Thanks to posters here, especially Neuro, for helping sort out the confusion, and CPS for further clarifying and being open-minded about issues with the newer CMOS tech deployed in the 5DIV, 80D, 7DII and others.]

With both the 80D and 5DIV, I've been noticing some IQ problems that seem to have no explanation. With shutter speeds in the 250-500 range being the ones most commonly effected. If camera shake, exposure issues, UV filters are ruled out as issues, with ISO at 400 or below...

Anybody else who shoots with a DPAF camera noticing shots that just miss being sharp, but can point to no known reason?

If so, any suspicion that signal processing or other DPAF issues could be involved?

I'm referring to problems with photos taken through the viewfinder, NOT LiveView.

For birds: 500 f/4L II or ?

I'm an amateur bird photographer, and since it's my 40th birthday this year my wife has agreed that I should splurge on a new lens (or other gear). I have a 70D body that I usually pair with a 400 f/5.6L. In low light, sometimes I use a 70-200 f/4L with a 1.4x extender to take advantage of the image stabilization.

My current frustrations are the lack of IS on the 400mm and the relatively noisy output from 70D at ISO 800 and up. I'm contemplating the 500mm f/4 L IS II, which is my dream lens, but also seems like an insanely expensive and specialized purchase for an amateur.

Instead of dropping $9k on the 500/4 II, I'm thinking of a couple alternatives:

1) 5Dm4 body, and perhaps the 100-400 II.

The 5Dm4 (or 5Dm3) would give me much better low-light performance, plus f/8 autofocus. Trading my 400/5.6 in for the new 100-400 would give me IS, though it's probably a wash on the optics at 400mm. Plus I'd get improved performance with my other lenses, not just at 500mm.

2) 1st gen 500 f/4L IS

These still seem to go for $5k+ and are a lot heavier. IS isn't nearly as good. Optics should still be very good, though.

3) Upgraded camera body plus Sigma 150-600 zoom

I've seen a lot of people raving about these lenses, and the extra reach + IS would get a lot of shots I currently miss.

On the other hand, I don't think there's anything like the sharpness and creamy background from a big white lens. If I buy the 500/4 II, I won't be upgrading my 70D this year, but the extra ~5 stops total would open up a lot more options.

Any thoughts (or alternate suggestions) for people who've used these combinations?

Canon EF-S 10-18 STM WORKS! at 10 mm on Fuill Frame Sony A7R

I connected EF-S 10-18 STM to my Sony A7R using Ommite EF-NEX adapter expecting to use maybe the 18 mm range without too much vignetting. To my surprise, there is no significant vignetting at 10 mm !!

I got excited and hooked up the 10-18 on my Canon 5D III using a 13 mm extension tube to cheat the EF mount but got huge circular vignetting. If anyone knows how to get good results on 5D III, please share.

Canon Cinema EOS C200 Pics Leak Ahead of Announcement

HTML:
Two images of the upcoming Canon EOS C200 4K cinema camera have leaked out ahead of the announcement. It’s interesting and maybe a little confusing that this camera wasn’t announced at NAB this past April, but that shouldn’t matter once it rolls out. We expect it to be a popular camera if pricing is “affordable”. No word on whether or not the EOS C100 Mark II will remain current.</p>

Second camera option

Hey everyone. Have been using a 5D3 for the last 5 years. Typically would use the EOS M + 11-22 as a back up especially when hiking. Would like to consider a more advanced second body so that one is mounted with a wide angle and the other with a telephoto zoom. Mostly do natural light portrait, travel landscape and kids events (stage dancing, etc). Any suggestions? 5DsR, 5d4 or wait for the upcoming 6D2? Appreciate your thoughts.

Future 7D Mark III

Hey Gang,
I know we are in the middle of the 6D Mark II and SL2 reported News releases.

But Question... I know the 7D Mark II was released September 15, 2014 and it will be 3 years this year. and that Camera makers are always racing to release the next DSLR with the hottest features. With the Nikon D500 and now the SOny A9. What guesses would you want on a 7D Mark III wish list?
Wi-FI? Removal of Anti alsis filter? TWO High speed CF or SQD cards? faster Shutter? Faster SD cards? Any other software features. I dont think we need 4K.. Is it time for a action Beast?

DJI Spark

so dji just announced their smallest drone starting at 500$ or 600€

weird thing is...i'm seeing a lot of hate in the comments towards this little drone..mainly because it doesn't have 4k (which i still think is not for the average user because of the high editing and storage requirements)

i'm thinking...my christmas globes will fly this year :D

Photokina To Become Yearly Trade Show After 2018

HTML:
<em>photokina 2018: the world’s leading trade fair for photo, video and imaging is repositioning itself</em></p>
<p>photokina will take place annually as of 2018. It will in future thus optimally reflect the fast-paced nature and the ever briefer innovation cycles of an increasingly digitalised industry. As of 2019 the trade fair will also have a new date in May. In addition to innovations from the core areas of the imaging workflow, the entire range of products, applications and services of relevance for imaging shall in future be presented in Cologne. With these changes, the transformation process begun in 2016 shall be consistently continued: under the umbrella of “Imaging Unlimited”, photokina last year inspired both exhibitors and visitors and accessed new target groups for the industry.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“The digital transformation of the imaging industry is advancing, and thus opening up new perspectives and value creation potential. The new date and the annual cycle should in future make photokina even more attractive to all providers of the imaging ecosystem. In this way, we show the specialised trade, the media and our users an even broader bandwidth of state-of-the-art products, applications and services in Cologne which especially suits the young imaging culture,” Rainer Führes, chairman of the board of the photography industry association (PIV) is pleased to state.</p>
<p>The imaging ecosystem today also includes, in addition to the core areas from the imaging workflow, trend areas like virtual and augmented reality, cloud computing, as well as image recognition and holography. The growing flood of images and videos must be processed and administered, so that archiving and content management, social media and communities are coming increasingly into focus. Apps and software solutions have become indispensable both for professional use and for the end consumer. Smart home applications and computer-generated imaging are once again increasing in importance. photokina should in future serve as an important international innovation platform.</p>
<p>Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, has a positive perspective on the future of the trade fair: “photokina 2016 has shown us that this traditional brand in our portfolio has lost nothing of its attraction worldwide and in the region. The new concept has been a complete success. photokina has continued to develop further over time, as have the products, services and the market environment presented there. Review: Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art by TDP

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the brand new Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art and came away as impressed as most other reviewers.</p>
<p>From TDP</p>
<blockquote><p>While zoom lenses typically win the popularity contests, fixed focal length models generally have some strong advantages and the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art Lens is a “prime” example. Exceptional image quality, including impressive sharpness and negligible distortion, is right at the top of this lens’ advantages. Having the f/1.8 aperture at a telephoto focal length can be a game-changer and there is a special wow factor in the background blur this combination creates.</p>
<p>The 135 Art lens brings more than just great image quality – it is the full package. Great looks, quality design … perhaps the only missing feature is optical stabilization. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sigma-135mm-f-1.8-DG-HSM-Art-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Patent: New Tilt-Shift Lens Designs & More Information

HTML:
The 45mm and 90mm tilt-shift lens have yet to be replaced years after the TS-E 17mm f/4L & TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II were released. A lot of people, myself included figured we’d be seeing new 45mm and 90mm tilt-shift lenses relatively soon, that obviously hasn’t been the case.</p>
<p>We now see (thanks dilbert) that Canon continues to work on a long tilt-shift lens, and a new patent for multiple optical formulas has appeared.</p>
<ul>
<li>TS-E 90mm f/2.8</li>
<li>TS-E 125mm f/4</li>
<li>TS-E 130mm f/4</li>
</ul>
<p>You can few the patent <a href="https://www4.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp/cgi-bin/tran_web_cgi_ejje?u=http://www4.j-platpat.inpit.go.jp/eng/translation/20170524205651800262998965870184174F4E926F16BCD9091F994191500242AC">here</a>.</p>
<p>While we haven’t heard anything directly about a new tilt-shift lens, there has been some talk about a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-information-about-a-new-canon-135mm-lens/">new kind of 135mm lens</a>, which is not a replacement for the EF 135mm f/2L. There has been an optical formula patent for a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/patent-canon-ef-135-f2l-wapodization-filters/">135mm APO</a> and now a 130mm tilt-shift.</p>
<p>We do know something along these lines is coming later in 2017, and we hope to confirm it some time soon.</p>

550D live histogram while shooting video?

Hey Guys
I use the 550D as a spare static camera for shooting video.
I cant bring up a live histogram while shooting video anymore (Yet can on 600D and 5D iii).
Now either I'm going crazy here and it never did it (And I just never noticed it before as I sometimes also run Magic lantern on it) or Ive done something to the settings?
Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
